  • todays video is the first part of a series I have been working on for almost 8 months! I have loved Gossip Girl for 8 years, it is one of my all time favourite shows and I knew I had to make a video all about it so here it is! A full recap of everything that happens in Gossip Girl from the pilot to the series finale and I could not be more proud of it. For this first video we have season 1 and season 2 with the others to follow soon! I wanted to upload it on the 15 year anniversary of the pilot but it wasn't ready in time so instead it's the 15 year anniversary of the 3rd episode of the 1st season Poison Ivy ❤️

    As I get older, I found a new appreciation for the first season. The writing was actually good in my opinion, a bit campy but just the right amount, it knew exactly what it wanted, not the clown show that season 6 was. Now that I am 24 I cannot STAND the weird mumbling voice that Ed Westwick does and the lethargic way Serena is speaking all the time, Leighton 100% carried the series

      I agree the first season was the BEST writing wise and even editing. The scenes and music was just perfectly done. It was a masterpiece. Even re watching it to this day it still just gives a vibe that makes me feel a way I cant explain. Season 2 and 3 were still good. After that it took a nose dive and I could barely watch anymore (lazy writing like blair with jack, chuck and jenny, blair and dan, lots of silliness, etc). I would just watch chuck/blair scenes. Chuck and blair's chemistry as a couple was just incredible and so enjoyable.

    As an American the college plot didn't surprise me honestly. Especially since they all come from money it's just assumed they will go to college (probably an Ivy) and get a degree and intern at their parents' company. College is the assumed next step after high school and a lot of kids go without really knowing what they want to study. Some kids can choose an undecided major but the Gossip Girl crew probably just got a business or communications degree of sorts.

    Nate and Blair were broken up at the time she slept with, Chuck. And Ed (Chuck) was only supposed to be a side character, hence why he was written only as a villain for the pilot. But, the producers like him so much he became a series regular and a lot of Chuck's growth, is due to his input. Liking the series so far

    This is so unimportant but! As an American - I’m sure that in prestigious private schools, “Ivy Week” may or may not be a thing, but it’s absolutely not a real thing for the general public whatsoever. I think it was more used to demonstrate how privileged the kids in the Upper East Side are! They get first dibs and personal conversations with admissions counselors at the best schools in the nation. Just wanted to add that :)

  • @hamiltonlauren64
    @hamiltonlauren64 Рік тому +13

    College, from an American perspective, is definitely something we are told from a young age that we need to do to have a successful life and career. It’s framed as “the best years of your life” and “an investment in your future”. This leads to a lot of 18 year olds going to college to get a degree in something just for the sake of having a degree. We also have an ‘undecided’ major that you can major in for the first couple of years while you finish the general pre-requisite credits until you can figure out what you want to do. We also have a lot of degrees and majors that are generally considered “useless” or have no direct career related to them. Some of these are philosophy, anthropology, a lot of art or music majors, etc.- or you need to go to graduate school to get a masters or doctorate in order to actually use certain degrees like psychology or biology bachelors degrees are pretty useless unless you continue on to med school or get lucky with a research job.
    In high school, we are definitely pressured into going to college by our teachers and parents. I think part of it is parents wanting their kids to be able to achieve things they never had the chance to do themselves and the whole idea of “the American dream”- that you can achieve anything if you just put in the time and work for it.
    College and University in the US is also very expensive and a lot of people go into debt to get a degree. Education is a business here, and colleges and other businesses (SAT/ACT prep courses, private tutors, expensive extracurriculars to boost your college application, etc.)profit off of the idea that college is necessary for everyone.
    Don’t get me wrong, college is great for some. Especially those who want a career that has a degree tied to it- like nursing or teaching. I’m currently in nursing school, but I didn’t know what I wanted to do at 18 when I took out loans to attend an expensive university.

    okay so you want to know about how american college/university stuff is like. For context, i am 19 years old, graduated in 2021, grew up in Connecticut (richy state, think gilmore girls) in a richy town, but went to a public high school.
    My town is known to have a very good public education system, but still like a third of people from my middle school went to private school. A lot of that is because it is wayyy easier to get into an ivy league school (Yale, Harvard, etc.) if you go to private school. I don’t know personally what private school is like, but i consider it a more intense version of my already intense high school experience.
    Starting from like 14 years old, you are drilled that all of your grades matter because even grades from that year will appear on your college transcript. In the first week, they showed us a video of asking seniors (18 year olds) about what they regretted about high school, and all of the people said that they wished that they had worked harder in their freshman year.
    Flash forward a couple years, everyone starts asking you about college. where are you applying? what’s your SAT score? what’s your gpa? Family events are a nightmare because you are so stressed about all the applications and what you will or won’t get into and it’s all people want to talk to you about. Going into junior year (3rd year of high school, 16/17 years old) people tell you that that was the most stressful year ever for them and it’s going to be miserable, blah, blah, blah. They say that because at that time, you are encouraged to take as many AP (college level) courses as you can. These have 5 times the amount of work, are always so stressful, but it really doesn’t feel like an option not to take any.
    people are asking at school what college you want to go to a judging you based on that.
    “did you hear that Blair wants to go to yale” “does she really think she can get in, that’s embarrassing”
    by the time acceptance letters are gotten in, almost no one gets into their first pick, cue a new wave of drama. All of the like 15 smartest people in the grade put in early decision applications (you get your answer back earlier and have a better chance to get in, but if you do, you are required to go to that specific school) to ivy league school. Only one guy got in to his ivy (#2 in the class). Everyone is pissed, by the end of the year only two people got excepted into ivys: #1 and #2 in the class. everyone puts the name of the school they are going to into their instagram bio, decorates their graduation cap with its logo, blah, blah, blah.
    By the time we graduate 98% of the students in my year are going to college in the spring. I can tell you now, college is not for 98% of students. I was a part of the 98% and i barely got through three months before i dropped out and went home. if you saw how much i struggled in high school (ADHD, depression, etc) you would definitely be like heyyy maybe college isn’t the right thing for you right now, but the school never gave us the option for anything different. I knew when i moved to college that i probably wasn’t ready for it, but i was given no other option. So i went with no idea what i wanted to study, no plan or interests and it went about as well as expected.
    the community at my school was extremely competitive, most of my friends applying to the same schools, some of them getting in, some of them not. the whole thing is a shit show. also, this is a PUBLIC school. i can’t imagine how intense it is in private schools where like a good third of the people end up at ivys.
    anywayyy, there is my extremely niche point of view that probably explains the upper middle class attitude towards college in the united stares fairly well.

    Hi, born and bred New Yorker here (Upper West Side), If you went to a private high school in NYC, the question adults ask you when you turn 17 isn't "What are your plans for after school?" its, "Where are you going to college". The "elite" in the US go to college because that is what parents/society expects of them.
    Often, 17yo kids are forced/encouraged by their parents to pursue a bachelor's degree because even if they don't have an idea of what they want to do, they need that ever-precious piece of paper that says they completed something.
    Also, there are huge benefits to going to an Ivy League school (Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Brown, Cornell, Dartmouth, Columbia, and U Penn). If you have a degree from one of these schools on your resume, the world is sort of your oyster in the US. "Elite" parents have certainly gotten into hot water for bribing admissions officers, buying buildings at the school, or making huge donations to steer admissions or have the university turn a blind eye to bad behavior.
    It's extremely hard to get a competitive salary after Uni without a college degree; although today, entrepreneurship, trade professions (think mechanics, builders, to graphic designers and coders etc.), are just some of the other options. Generally if you're working in an office and your name isn't on the front door, you are almost always required to have a bachelor's degree, or at minimum an associate's degree.
    While the internet has made information more accessible, and things are sort of changing here (more online entrepreneurship, more degrees online, more ways to earn a living without attending college), there are a lot of problems with our education system at the higher levels of academia (rising prices of school tuition, massive student debt taken out that take about 30 years to pay back, and inflation) there are far more changes that need to be made to make the US the "land of equal opportunity" it's fabled to be.

I always knew this show was insane obviously, but when someone actually verbalizes this whole story it's way more insane haha. Also, how fucked up is it that Lily ends up with Serena's dad (can't remember his name) after he literally tricked her into thinking she had cancer??? That's the most fucked up part of the whole show. It makes no sense and makes it feel like Lily is in an abusive, manipulative relationship at the end. I get why she didn't end up with Rufus cuz they wanted Serena and Dan together but even that is messed up because Dan basically cyber-bullied his entire friend group but he gets the girl anyway??? Hate this show but also I'm obsessed with the DRAMA.

    the teacher def has to be older than 22 cuz as such a prestigious school constance is i feel like their teachers would at least have a masters degree also dan could be 18 and she could be 19 but it’s still hella inappropriate for them to get involved being a student and teacher

    and to the point of Uni Culture vs College Culture. TLDR: when colleges became integrated they became less about "higher learnings" and status because the US is built off of racism and became more about getting students into debt to make sure that the less wealthy minorities wouldn't have much of an advantage even with a degree because of their class status. the world of Ivy League depicted in Gossip Girl furthers my point.

    I feel like Serena was the main protagonist for season 1 to Half season 2 than for the rest of the season and through season 3 is Blair and then for the rest of the show Dan is the main protagonist and for Season 5 that spot is a toss up betwen Dan and Blair.

    i've had a few people comment that the audio is delayed! 😞when i watch it everything seems to be okay but i've had to take a few clips out due to copyright so i think youtube trying to process the edited version is messing with the audio! if you try closing the tab and opening it again or waiting for a little bit then trying to watch it again hopefully it should all be fixed 😊 so annoying but i'm hoping it sorts itself out soon!

    • @hamiltonlauren64
      @hamiltonlauren64 Рік тому +3

      Yeah I was wondering if anyone else had been experiencing this lol. Nothing I’ve done seems to fix it sadly. I’ve mainly just been listening to it as a podcast while I drive so it’s no big deal. Hopefully UA-cam gets it sorted out. Great job on the video though!

      I've spoken to someone at UA-cam but they can't find an issue with it and don't have a solution, I'm going to try to revert the video back to the original and hopefully that will fix the audio! So fingers crossed by the end of the day it'll be just like when I first uploaded it again and there won't be anymore audio issues 😊
