I put in and got “Archery either sex” in 2019. I scouted every public hunting area in the section I got, scouted several private owned properties, talked to local landowners and hunters, all leading up to and the start of the season. Then I hunted several 4 day weekends, over the season, in addition to the 6 times I went to look for elk. Beautiful country down there (I live north of there), a lot of private but friendly people, and a lot of them were very helpful. Unfortunately, everyone around the several counties we spoke to told us the reality of the situation, and that unless you pay a “guide” $3,500 to take you onto the land where the elk are, you aren’t even going to see one. People in every area we went to, both Public Hunting Areas and private property said that money is hard to come by there, and the “guide” business pulls in a lot of money for families in those areas. The guides actually go out onto PHA’s with atv’s and literally chase and herd the elk off of those lands, and onto the properties that are owned by the strip mining companies. The strip mining companies own 100’s and 100’s of thousands of acres there, and they “lease” access to the “guides” who then charge you $3,000+ to ride up to some fenced in elk feeding on piles of corn, and shoot it. No stalking and hunting the animals like a guided adventure out west, just you and some fat old blowhard driving you up to some captive killing. I’ve never felt so ripped off, mislead-lied to, and disappointed in something that I personally put so much actual work, walking up and down mountains, spending time practicing with bow and arrow, buying gear, taking off work to go down there, just to find out it’s a scam. You might see a lost wandering cow or calf on some remote piece of private property next to a strip mine, but no groups or herds. Don’t waste your time, if you’re okay with spending $3,500 on a guided elk hunt, spend another grand and go out west. Sorry to be a bummer, but these are facts, and hopefully it’ll save someone the time and money. Still haven’t heard of anyone seeing elk in the “protected “ viewing areas in the last few years...

I drew a bull tag in 2020 after applying for twenty years straight. I hunted without a guide and got a nice 6 x 6 On public Land. I heard a couple more bulls bugling which were also On public land. I realize I was pretty lucky, but your statement that all the bills are behind fences is totally untrue. Also it is illegal to hunt elk over bait. I'm not saying that some guides might not be a little shady but most hunters are not going to shoot an elk over bait when it is not legal. By the way I talked with a biologist to get a recommendation on where to hunt. Also successful elk hunters in KY only use a guide approximately 50% of the time.

I’m a big fan of yours but I’m tired of hearing how coal mining has scarred the land. If you know anything about legislation and land management regarding the gas and coal industry, you would know that the land is restored to same or better condition than before the land was mined. This goes for underground as well as mountain top mining.
Where there was once a mountain top that was only being used for timber, after it is mined, it can be developed for an airport, a hospital, a manufacturing business or shopping center. That means high paying jobs during the mining process for 15-20 years or longer and a lot of decent jobs for many years afterwards.
My point is coal has been bad mouthed much like hunting and I would think that of all people you would understand that much like harvesting a resource such as wildlife, coal mining is merely harvesting a much needed resource that keeps jobs in America and and keeps us from being energy dependent on foreign countries. I can go on about how there is exhaust stack scrubber technology or that water exiting a mine site has to be cleaner than when it entered. But it seems pointless after Obama has destroyed the coal industry and ruined states like WV that needed those jobs and tax money for our schools. WV is about to lose the Promise scholarship program. This program gave a lot of school tuition to kids that wouldn’t otherwise get to go to college. Not only did those kids get a college education, but it keeps money in our state universities, in state communities and supporting businesses.

I understand Steve probably doesn’t read these comments or reads any of the emails sent to MEATEATER in general, but I have corresponded with some of his staff and had the pleasure to actually chat with one of them. I invited the crew on a traditional Pa rifle deer hunt, not knowing that I had sent that invitation a year too late as they just finished shooting a Pa deer camp hunt just recently, although it was a flintlock hunt instead of a Pa deer rifle season hunt. Wish I could’ve made that happen. But they know that invitation is always standing.

They were started up in the Smokies about the same time as Kentucky and now they're thick in the NC western mountains, eastern TN and I now live in GA. Just lucky that way lol. Never heard much about trying to restore the woodlands bison. They roamed the hills up there too. Sign on the Blue Ridge Parkway at the top of Bull Creek Gap says, The last buffalo seen in the eastern US was shot here 1841. Musta been a heluva proud moment! But then hardly anything made it through the depression. I heard more than one old timer back in the day talk about the dead silence in the woods for many years following.

The best of marksman would be accurate to a distance of 100 yards. They did not have the technology of mouth calls, yet they were able to make the elk almost extinct in the greater USA. I respect Steve so much. His love and affection for his quarry is second to none. How he takes his time to care for his bounty from field to table.

Man, hunting elk in the home mountains is for sure a dream. Hearing a bugle in those woods would be amazing. Good hunt!

That was a very enjoyable video. Thanks! I love to Hunt. I only Hunt things that don't have feathers. I don't eat bird's of any kind. I love venison. Small game like squirrel and racoons are good eating to. I do Hunt coyote to keep population in check here on our farm but I don't eat them. They are not very good. I tried it. I tend to try everything I kill. Just kinda figured if I was going to kill it I probably should try to make some use of it weather it be eating it or making something useful,or sometimes just turning it into fertilizer. I really enjoy your videos thanks.
