  • This lower ball joint replacement video was made possible by Mevotech who was kind enough to provide above OE (Original Equipment) quality replacement parts to perform this service.
    Mevotech is a 30 year old Canadian based automotive parts manufacturer. Thank You Mevotech!
    In this video, we'll be replacing the lower ball joint on a 2002 Honda Civic. What makes this service unusual is that the ball joint is pressed fitted into the steering knuckle in lieu of control arm. To get access to press out this ball joint, the steering knuckle should be detached from the lower control arm and suspension strut. The ball joint can then be pressed out using a standard ball joint press kit using Honda specific press adapters. The Mevotech ball joint came with a press adapter to ease installation of the new ball joint to prevent damage during installation. The Mevotech donated ball joint is a TTX (Terrain Tough Extreme) series part designed for taxis and fleet service to outperform and outlast standard OE replacement ball joints.

    I didn’t have those Honda parts for the press so I used an old strut knuckle bolt and an old axle nut with the press and then a 30 mm socket with a mallet and VOILA! 😃

      Thanks for your comments! Thunking noise when the wheels are at full deflection and going up a driveway or over bumps. The upward motion of the wheel combined with turning pulls the ball of the ball joint out of the ball joint socket. As the wear gets progressively worse, the front wheels will wonder and a wheel alignment job will not correct it. I'll be listing the tools and parts used this evening in the text description area of this video.

    hello, nice video, but i have a question, the grease fittin you just use it to add grease and then took it off, So what about if you need to add grease in the future??? you are disassembly everything or you are using a needle injection to add more grease??

    • @hardlymovingpro
      @hardlymovingpro  3 роки тому +1

      Good question. There's not enough room to have a permanent grease fitting on the ball joint. The fitting would rub against the bearing cup of the cv axle. If you want to re-grease, you'd have to remove the cv axle from the hub, screw in the fitting and then re-grease.

    If you don't have an Impact driver.. You can use a lead anchor setting tool for 3/8" drop in anchors....Just whack the head of the bolt with it...It will jar the bolt loose..

    Do you need to do an alignment aftet this job or not necessarily? I just changed my tie rod ends, tje strut mounts and the wishbone bearings, i have a little knock when starting off while also stearing and i just did an alignment. The Ball joints would be the next job to do

    • @hardlymovingpro
      @hardlymovingpro  2 роки тому

      Absolutely! Do the alignment AFTER you do the ball joints. You can also get life time alignment agreements with some shops like Firestone so you can bring your car back as often as you want.

    what is your preference regarding sealed vs grease-able ball joints? I've always used the oem toyota that are sealed personally and they seem to last.

    • @hardlymovingpro
      @hardlymovingpro  4 роки тому +1

      My preference is grease-able everything. There are parts manufacturers that exceed oem standards. Mevotech's is one of them with their TTX ball joint series. I'll show you in a future video installing one on a Toyota.

    • @hardlymovingpro
      @hardlymovingpro  2 роки тому

      Are you referring to the grease fitting plug? If so, the replacement joint came with L shaped grease fitting adapter (to pump in grease after installation and to be later removed) and a green rubber press in plug (to replace the grease fitting adapter).

    • @agustinherrera5600
      @agustinherrera5600 2 роки тому

      @@hardlymovingpro the green plug you used to to plug the hole since there was no room to leave the grease fitting installed . Mine came with the grease fitting but there was no clearance for it on the car so i needed a plug for the hole and I couldn’t find one

    Impact driver should not be used on a ball joint press it will destroy the threaded portion of the press. Yes I know everybody does it, that don't make it correct.

    There is no reason to take the rotor off the knuckle. Leave it attached. You can remove the axle nut with the rotor attached. You do need to remove the caliper though.

    • @hardlymovingpro

      Would be somewhat cumbersome pressing out the old ball joint with the knuckle attached rotor held on with only one screw.
