I believe due I lost a job opportunity that was golden due to my previous company using “case manager” as the title, even though I only saw people to do that about 25 times in a two year period total, and in the rest of the time I ran the entire location, created a training book with how to do everything you need to know to run the place for volunteer staff I oversaw, was the janitor, photographer, and so much more. They changed the title only after I was gone, I think so they didn’t have to pay me as much. Now I think that title will prevent me from getting a job I am qualified to do, and the new title is better. I believe I was not even considered for a job as resource manager even though that is literally what I did, worked providing and gathering resources, because they wanted me as a case manager. Ugh.

Job titles are very important in engineering. They are used in recruiting and staffing.

Hi - What about Assistant Manger? Would that be considered diminutive?

I have a lot of specialized skills, including regarding how to build rapport and serve the Deaf community, and potential solutions for government policy to remove barriers so Deaf citizens can thrive. While I have jobs, internships, and volunteer positions on my current two-page resume that I believe show my qualifications, WorkSource suggested I go the new way that IT guys do resumes. They said to make it all one page, that HR will dump anything two page, and have a bulleted list of accomplishments and skills at the top, followed by just ONE recent job, my college education, and ditch all the other stuff. Is that the new best way for people seeking a government job or job in management for a nonprofit in the west coast in 2024? I would like lots of perspectives.

I'm looking to leave because I received a dry promotion in title and salary. I did keep my real title off the resume, and I'm at the end of some interview. If offer letter stage is in play will this be something I should clarify for the background check?

They will only verify what your provide. So on the background check you could list actual job title and on your resume have it as the industry specific job title.

Sounds like our imaginations are a bit reckless, when it comes to title misinterpretation.
Would it be safe to say removing titles altogether (all other things being equal, jd match checklisted) in favor of listing only the department/organization so that the person reviewing your resume doesn't get 'title-distracted' and naturally be curious what you accomplished in that department?

Wow andrew. I have so much respect for what you do. However, I can't believe I disagree with you so much on this one. I know that you have significant recruiter experience. While I am not a recruiter I have worked in HR for a couple of decades. What I see is that 90% of recruiters are recruiting by titles and not skills. Therefore, if they are looking for a VP they are by default searching for those who have VP titles already. What you described, I believe is an ideal world where people are contemplative and comprehensive in what they do. However, I do not believe that it is the most common practice.
