I happen to own one, and it still puts a smile on face every time I drive it. When I considered what to buy I didn't put much weight on infotainment, gimmicks, 0-100, or whether the range was a bit more or less than others. Most tests of EVs tend to focus a lot on those, but for me how it works purely as a car was much more important. When deciding to buy one I considered it like I would consider any car, and various petrol and diesel models were also up for consideration. I looked at comfort, space, safety, handling, economy and capabilities for both slippery and semi off road conditions. (This will do both slippery and bumpy tracks well. Air suspension can raise it up quite a bit). It is a very versatile car and the one that best met my wishes (EV or not). It would still be my choice today even after seeing some of the newer competitors. (As a sidenote it is built by Magna Steyr at the same factory as some BMW, Audis and Mercedes models).
Hey bro. Im from Kingston Jamaica. Not too long ago, i saw one of these in the city. It was one of the most gorgeous looking cars i've ever seen. More importantly, with EV's like these it gives customers more options than just the Teslas and of course the german brands. Im glad that you own one though. Hopefully i can at least test drive the I-Pace because the price is insane😂
i-Pace owner here, not sure I can agree that the iX is in the same price range, it starts where the i-Pace tops out (and you're gonna climb a solid $10-15k USD to get a true luxury experience from the iX). And that's the thing about the i-Pace: it's not a luxury car, despite the badge and the marketing. What it IS is a sports car disguised as a practical family vehicle, which is why my lady agreed to it (and why she loves it). For me, the whole point of this car is not cruising in absolute comfort from point A to B, it's about how you can drive when your wife and child *aren't* in the car with you. It goads you to drive faster, turn sharper, open it up whenever possible, and that's not about the EV torque, it's about the handling and feel. My dream is to get an iX for the plush cruising, and the i-Pace as a second runabout or escape valve from reality when the need arises :-)
I'd choose it over electric BMWs and Mercedes in a heartbeat. Looks great, drives as well as a sports sedan and the seats are super comfortable. I'm just sad they cancelled the electric XJ. That would have been something to behold.
I own both an ipace and ionic 5, both brilliant cars but the ipace is a class above the ionic 5, it’s refinement, performance and driving experience is worth the extra.
Fantastic cars, so much better to drive than any of the competitors other than the Taycan. Range is a dependable 200 miles in winter when enjoying the performance and a decent 230 in summer, plenty for most trips and it’ll charge fast enough too. Quality of materials is excellent as well, it feels premium.
Great review as always, Paul. Just a suggestion, how about including an under bonnet look at the cars you feature, with a brief explanation to the viewers as to what actually powers the vehicle. Just a thought..
I’m 15000 miles in, doesn’t keep pace with German tech, but it is a beautiful drivers car. The comics put everything in front of it, I would buy another one, designed from the ground up and evolving, my first Jaguar and likely not the last
We've had ours in Los Angeles for about two weeks, and we're over the moon. "Puts a smile on your face" is exactly what it does. It's a magnificent pairing of comfort and thrill that I've never really felt before.
Unfortuneatly for the Brits their is distrust with their engineering and Landrover Jaguar are forever being mentioned on social media or car articles as being unreliable and expensive poor service .
This updated version is much better and the only other ev that comes close is the Porsche Cross Tourismo, after driving them back to back, but you can buy a fully loaded Jaguar I-Pace for less than half, so you can do a lot with the other £75k, perhaps by a used 911 🚙👍🏻
NIce review that kind of sums up the I-pace. No longer top of the hill with tech and needing an update but likely not going to get one till after 2025. Though I have only managed to sit in one so far I have test driven a number of others including Teslas, the Kia, Ionic, and Audi and Polestar. They each have their down sides. The Polestar has the best handling of these but what a stiff ride and cramiped cabin. From all the reviews I am hoping the Jag will be that more comfortable but still sporty ev I am looking for slighted dated tech or not.
looks awesome even in this age because this car was launched in 2017 for 2018 model year especially in got some bright colours interior and exterior with some black trim
It is a rather quirky fun looking car and it won heaps of a award's when it first came out. It's sad it's not as popular as it should be. But that seems to be the case for all of Jaguars cars. People seem to be stuck on BMW or Mercedes.
I love my Ipace enough to buy a 2nd. This car is so much nicer and in a different league than most of the ev's out there. It's dripping in luxury and features for a fair price.
E-vehicle at $150k from Jaguar. Unreliability/depreciation/poor resale are a given in Australia. Less money: Mercedes Benz E200 sedan, fully loaded, petrol sedan. Good performance, mileage, 5y warranty, & easy resale. My choice 2021. And SIM and remote app are included. 😀
Here’s the dealio: the car is beautiful. It’s quiet. It drives with a smooth feel and reasonably nimble character for a 5000# vehicle. It is nicely appointed and comfortable. It has reasonable enough storage and unlike another commenter, I don’t feel claustrophobic in it at all. HOWEVER…. The infotainment screening and menu is a joke. It’s slow to react and the touch component on the screen is too variable. Awful. It is obsolete compared to any new EV with regard to it’s charging speed at public charging stations. It can only receive100 kw (compared with at least 150 for Tesla and over 200 kw for the Ionic). On road trips, plan on charging for 1 hour for every 2.5 hours of driving at highway speed. Others that say they get 200 miles while driving 70-75 mph on a four lane freeway do not know what they are talking about. In upper Midwest winter conditions, you’ll be lucky to go 160 miles and still keep yourself warm. If you are a near exclusive local driver, as most people are, with a home charger it will more than cover your needs. The regenerative braking is nice, but it doesn’t lead you to a complete stop and it has a limited uphill hold after braking with the peddle so that the car won’t roll backward. It does NOT have a forward brake hold so you must use the brake pedal to hold the car. The brakes themselves are awful. They are grabby and considerably weaker than any of its price comparable competitors. Jaguar swung hard, but left the car short of the fence on the warning track. It is not quite ready for prime time and obsolete compared with others in its class. Finally, it’s a Jag. Mine has spent 30 days in the shop in its first 16 months of ownership. Not recommended
Lot of nonsense above. Very pleased with the infotainment once my home page was set to my liking. Regen does stop completely. All eva are impacted by extreme winter conditions, not just this one. 200 miles on the highway in temperate weather is usual. And the car is nice, unlike spartan, plain, overpriced Teslas.
As an owner of one of these, I can tell you that it drives like a dream, is quite good for mileage, but it is a weird mix of an suv and a hatchback which means shit boot space AND claustrophobic cabin. We also had to get it back for issues with hill hold, wipers and weirdness with the infotainment.
I've seen a red one on the road, very sleek looking car, doesn't even look like an ev. When I was taking my M4 for a service early this year, I spoke to the local BMW's sales manager and he showed me how many i4s are being ordered. Perhaps Jaguar will be more worried when those Bimmers are delivered later this year. Oh, and the Model Y of course...
I'm on my second iPace and really love it. I smile every time I drive... I could never buy a BMW iX with that ugly grille. And I drove X5s for many years
You are very picky in that you pull on panels, do judgements on minute styling elements, how far windows roll down, will a water bottle fit in the door. I am not that picky, but I want you to do the review on my next car. Attention to detail, fantastic. I can always fast forward through the bits I don't want to know, but truly appreciate the fact that if I do want them, they are there.
It makes far more sense as a used car buy as it really has only two competitors - an Audi etron and Mercedes eqc. All three are great ev's but I'll be going for the i pace.
I don't think they want to sell them. Well, not my local JLR dealer. I tried to buy one. Even specc'ed a car online. Dealer couldn't even get one for me to look at, let alone drive. Didn't return calls. I bought a new Defender from them less than a year ago and have had Landrovers before that. Was really dissapointed and probably won't consider JLR in the future. I expected better from a car that, fully configured, was over 180K.
I had one for 20 months, and bought another i'v had also 20 months. Nothing that I can find that is a better EV. I hate the gimmicky electric cars on the market, and find the iPace is beautiful classic design. The screens are just fine actually. I would like faster charging on the run, but the limit is set by the insurance company guaranteeing the big battery.
Are you serious? why are they not selling. easy price price price.$150k +. Cost of electric cars over conventional will leave many average austrailans not being able to afford a new car in the future and they wont drop in price just like an iphone has continued to go up.
The simple reason it hasn’t sold, at least in the US, the dealer network. Dealers don’t want to sell EV’s since they make most of their money on service and EV’s don’t require much if any service. When I went into my local Jaguar dealer in the past they tried to anti-sell me on the i-pace.
I find the durometer segment of the interior section a little ott. What would be more interesting is a dB reading whilst driving at 60, 80, 100, 110 kms/hr. Would be a good point of difference compared to other UA-cam motor jurnos 👍
Have owed it for 2 years! It’s a beautiful car to drive and own. Last year had a major crash on the motorway with a guy ploughing me in the back at 80km/h while I was standstill with my 8 month pregnant wife in the passenger seat. Still managed to drive away from the crash site to the hospital and later home that very night. I know JLR products have been bad in the past but they are much better now and definitely more reliable. Maybe they lack in tech but they have always been a better drivers car.
No wonder JLR are in trouble, built a brand new platform for the iPace at huge cost, not used it on any other model, and apparently it will be retired when iPace ceases production. Wouldn’t be surprised if they still haven’t amortised the cost of the platform by the time iPace is pensioned off…
Everything they learnt on I Pace has been very much used for all future JLR EV product. I Pace was most definitely a useful vehicle for JLR. JLR spend a lot less R & D time on future products, via what they learnt on developing the I Pace
The Jaguar dealer said great car round town on flat roads, but in the hills chews the battery power. Not good for long trips, told me to buy the Diesel F-Pace instead if you want to travel.
So missing the mark in a few areas. I wonder how good a car would be with Paul Maric helping in development. Perfect or close. Since when do Aussies say "bespoke"? Sounds off to a red blooded aussie bloke. Have to look it up, still don't understand it. 😬
People aren't buying it as much because it's being outshone by the likes of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the Kia EV6..... As good as the iPace was when it appeared, Jaguar haven't shown any desire to move the iPace on, or evolve the car. They're being left in the shade.....

E Jag looks nice but is it really that good that it's worth double the cost of a Tesla model 3, I'd think not.
Is anyone really doing better business in the EV sector other than Tesla?
Simple answer it’s way too expensive for average family

about the same for all non-Tesla EVs. If you do more than a couple of moderate road trips you should wait a few more years for an EV.
