I have heard this song done at a break neck pace, and mechanically SO many times, devoid of any of the underlying grief and pain. Thank you for posting this version. It has so much more of the genuine feeling that the story of this song tells. Beautiful!!!
Yes, though it's only fair to point out that the original arranger (Afro-Am. Wm. Dawson) did indicate that speed. I encountered this type of approach a number of years ago in a workshop and think it's more powerful, too.
The slaves who experienced the grace of God learned to sing about heaven and being with God, whereas many with far more riches and social mobility turn away from God and perish. The raw power of this "spiritual" song is magnificent, and the performance here by the young men magnificent as well.
