I was just looking at the new Ritz Carlton yacht cruises and they look fantastic. What a great trip with your dad. That being said ,I wish the US would have beautiful new trains with upscale service as then I would travel with them.

I’m a 70yo disabled veteran and I’ve always wanted to take a trip like this. Since I’m trying to survive on Social Security here in NY i couldn’t afford to take a trip like this. Watching this was hard. I lost my dad in 2018. From 2007-2010, I worked for an airline and was able to treat him to multiple trips - NYC, MIA, and a random trip to Tucson where we rented a car and drove to Tombstone. Looking back, I was naive and never would've imagined that 10 years later, he'd be gone. I miss him, and am so glad you're sharing your trip with your dad. Such a great man.
@Rick Smith I'm so sorry you lost him to Covid. I think some people don't understand how dangerous Covid is. It is a killer to many, as you've experienced. Because sufferers were isolated in hospitals, it was almost a hidden death. I live next to a huge cemetery. It is beautiful and was my favourite place to walk until March 2020. Then, from my upstairs windows, I started to see the constant streams of undertakers cars carrying coffins, driving through the gates. No more than 15 mourners were permitted to enter. I've resumed walking there and the number of new burying plots is astonishing. An employee told me that roughly 50% of those were covid burials. We accepted all the guidance. Everyone wore masks and house parties were quickly shut down, so our % of deaths per capita was much lower than the US. rip to your father.

Back in 1955, i was a young girl. My mom remarried and she and daddy took me to california to meet his family. I never forgort leaving chicago. Dome diner cars, pink table linens, roses on the table, gold colored utensils, the upper bunk with nlue night light and a small window. I was so excited i watched outside passing by. The kindness of the porters, the shirley temple drink in the bar car... and much more daddy took a picture of us in our compartment, and i have the silliest smile on my face.. the train stopped in reno and ad I lts got off to gamble for the layever. The porter was responsible, kind of " baby-sitting ".from afar . Brought me hot cocoa and cookies.. america needs her trains again. Air travel is brutally stressful

A TGV averaging 200 mph would still take 14 hours. A maglev train would still take eight hours (and be exponentially more expensive than wheel on rail HSR). In North America, trains are the scenic route that you take for the view. If you want to get there quickly, the only way is jet aircraft. 🙂 Look at the other free countries that are comparable in geographic size (Russia and China don't count, as they are not free): Canada and Australia. Neither has a nationwide system of HSR public transit, for the same reason that we do not. We'd sink hundreds of billions into it, possibly trillions, and the end product would struggle to go half as fast as jet aircraft. Just remember, in the near future we'll have supersonic flight over land again, because Lockheed and NASA have discovered an aircraft shape that lets you break the sound barrier with a barely audible sonic boom (and no windows broken). Such an aircraft would only take 2.5 hours to cross the country, versus 14 for wheel on rail HSR. 🙂
Actually, in Japan rail travel does cut time and money. The Bullet Trains get you there faster than air travel. Their sixty year old technology is still way better than Amtrak.
Idk, nearly 4k for two people and the accommodations are not very spacious. I would love to take a trip like this, but honestly for that same price I can literally do a cruise with more activities included or fly down to Mexico for an all inclusive resort stay, play the cards right alcohol included. Maybe everything is just getting more an more expensive, I'm only in my mid-30s and I'm starting to sound like an old fart. Either way, fun and interesting video. Just wish the experience was more affordable. For that same price you can get two months in a crappy NY apartment that has way more legroom.
Not at all. Did you see how many empty spots they had? And yet the price is still so high? It's because privileged use of the tracks was handed over to private companies after taxpayers largely funded the development of the lines. Now passenger trains have to share the tracks with commercial freight, and the commercial freight gets priority, and the cost of taking up space with passenger cars is passed on to the consumer. That's why it's so expensive. It's so slow because auto makers like Elon Musk lobby against the development of modern bullet trains. Otherwise you could cross the USA in under 24 hours, including 30 minute stops in half a dozen cities.
If you at it as more a journey and less like mere transportation the price seems more reasonable. You get three nights of sleeping accommodations plus almost four days of meals included in that cost, including access to the train station lounges at both ends and in Chicago. Of course, coach is also a much, much cheaper option, especially if your journey is shorter than this.

Over the last 30 years I have traveled across country 10 times (from Los Angeles to Baltimore and back again). I took Greyhound 5 times; I drove 3 times; and I took a plane twice. I never took Amtrak. I enjoyed the video, especially since I plan to go Amtrak the next time, in 2025.
I'm glad you took your dad with you on this trip. When I was five my mom and I took an Amtrak from Michigan to California. Despite developing an inner ear infection on the way there, I had a great time. She passed away last June and after watching this video I've dug out the album with our pictures from that trip. One of these days I'll have to do this again.
Wow, this made me kind of tear up. I wish I could have done a trip like this with my folks before they passed. They were my best friends! I am glad you were able to do it (though ear infections can be miserable, especially as a kid!). How long did it take then (do you remember, as you were little!)?
I know they aren't the main focus of the videos, but your shots of the countryside passing by are gorgeous. The image of the mesa outside the dining room table while waiting for lunch in New Mexico (21:28) is beautiful, for one example. FYI, the Metropolitan Lounge in Chicago has some really nice private showers available to sleeper guests for free, complete with soap, shampoo, and towels. You only need to ask for it at the lounge desk. Thanks for a great Amtrak video, it looks like you had a fun trip.
I think it is absolutely incredibly sweet that you are spending this trip with your dad! Your papa is absolutely darling. If I could have done this with my parents, I would have thoroughly enjoyed it! As a kid, I always used to dream of going coast to coast on a train - of course that was the 70s! I still kind of want to do it, but it doesn't have the allure as it once did. Thank you so much for this video - it was so terrific to get that insider's view of what it is like to actually do it!
Trek, i just want to say i love these videos, i dont have the kind of money to make a trip like this but everytime you upload im filled with joy, i try to have this experience through you and it gives me a break from my dull everyday life. great journey especially with Dad, no substitute for him. I am in Pakistan but visited the USA a few times . Train is not much loved by travelers but it's a great exciting journey. The train is very popular and high speed most modern in China.

I traveled on Amtrak in a roomette from West Palm Beach Florida to New York in July 2021. The roomette was decent but thankfully I was solo as it would be a tad cramped for two . The on board shower was working which was great. It was definitely a nice change from the craziness that flying can be sometimes. I really enjoyed the video 😎😎😎
Trek Trendy that trip was pure class. Being a Father I know how your Dad would feel being on an adventure with his Son. We did a few days on a motorbike trip and sharing that time with my Son was priceless. Superb editing with top drawer sound & camera work.
Pretty cool that you were able to do this trip with your Dad! One of my few regrets with my Dad, who passed away a few years ago, is that we never did anything like this. Even though I offered to make it happen, he just wasn't interested. Doesn't mean I won't be doing this trip, just means he won't be there, well maybe in spirit?

This is awesome. Man, I wish I could’ve done something like this while my dad was alive. He was killed in a car accident when I was in my early 20’s, he was only 60. Do more of this, dude, as often as you can. Drink it all in while you’re both still of able body and sound mind. Also, your pops seems like a funny dude. I think we’d all appreciate a little more lens time from dad, next trip. Dads being dads will always be entertaining. You can count on them for the best candid reactions/responses.
Thanks so much for sharing. I took Amtrack from San Diego to San Francisco. The way up we were in regular seats. Due to my chronic pain, on the way back we got the sleeper. I was so impressed with the sleeper and the food was beyond our expetations. My only fear with doing a trip like this is changing trains. I go so confused inside train stations.
Growing up in Santa Fe, NM for my early youth, it's cool af seeing Lamy train station briefly in the video. Historic train spot. Always wanted to film a western there.
I travelled LA to NY on Amtrak in 2005 via Chicago and DC. Coach the whole way! Despite that, fantastic experience, this video has brought back fond memories of a stop in Albuquerque where we got off the train for Mexican food, crossing that bridge in Iowa (in daylight!) and a trip up the Sears Tower and a deep pan pizza in Chicago. Would love to do it again.
Love that you were in NM, my home state! I'm just a bit south of Raton and a bit north of Albuquerque, in Santa Fe! You really did it right. From the sheer size to the amazing varying scenery, to the extreme weather, you can say that you truly experienced the US with your dad! Great memories you'll have, and I'm so grateful that you shared! I also love how much you valued the experience with your dad. As someone that no longer has living parents, I can say those experiences are priceless.

For the future, there are showers in the Chicago Union Station lounge (in third floor I think) so no need for hotel in Chi. There is also a food lounge on the 2nd floor above the baggage check in area if the snacks in the lounge are not hearty enough for you. Lastly, you can board from the Union station lounge with priority by telling the attendant there and showing your room/roomette ticket. You can even do Red cap service from the lounge to the tracks (they take your bags and give you a ride to the correct train cart) if you have mobility issues (tip appreciated).

Not done the train ride, but I've driven from Los Angeles to Dallas and back, and New Mexico was the big surprise. Such a beautiful state, and Old Town Albuquerque was amazing, really enjoyed it.
Great video. My family traveled roundtrip from NY to LA several times when I was a kid - back when a family could afford to do that - although we didn't have the luxury of sleeping cars. We sat up in coach for 3 days! But, it was fun. Thanks for letting me relive a part of my childhood. Keep up the great work.

I've just come back from a long rail journey that included the Lakeshore Limited. I couldn't help immediately noticing the very strange route you assigned it, which shows it as much more direct than it actually is. In fact, the train goes due north to Albany and then due west to Buffalo, from where it hugs the lakes to Chicago. That said, I'm sure many have dreamed that such a direct route between New York City and Buffalo would be created!
Not only is the Lakeshore Limited a direct route, but the Lakeshore Limited used to run on its own express track between NYC and Chicago, making only limited stops and was five hours faster than the one we have today. But of course, that was way back in the 1950's and 1960's when the Lakeshore Limited was known as the 20th Century Limited and was run by Penn Central and Amtrak did not exist.

As a True & Blue Yankee, born in Philadelphia, & presently living in San Diego, I always find it fascinating to see see things from the perspective of foreigners as they explore the USA 🇺🇸. This was an excellent video, featuring quality time with your Dad. And, actually, I was quite surprised at the end when you revealed the cost of the trip. Honestly, I thought it was going to be a lot more expensive. I think I'm going to take this trip (in the opposite direction) one day with my wife. She is Brazilian, from Rio de Janeiro--so, this would be a great way to show her a large bit of her new country.

I did almost that same route in 2003, but started from Boston instead (as part of a longer round trip, I returned via the California Zephyr and the Lake Shore Limited). The one difference, I went by coach. It was perfectly fine, the coach seats are wide, recline fully, and are comfortable. That being said, I have since crossed the country by sleeper, and will always opt for that instead, haha.
This journey through the American West really gives you an idea of the hugeness of the American continent. And what the pioneers had to travel through in the covered wagon days. Imagine!

My son travels a lot now, and he’s taken me to NYC and again to Nashville coming up soon. It’s great spending time with my son and his other friends on these work trips. This reminds me of those close quarter trips. Great channel and yes it certainly isn’t about speed but slowing down 😊
Several years back I had been assigned to bedroom A and found it most uncomfortable, the four others have considerably more room. Also the WC/shower door fully opens as well. I use a travel agent and have refused to accept A on the trip CHI to LAX. Service was great and their food is really good. The situation may be different for you, but I am on a cane and hobble along. Great video!
I travelled coast to coast round trip last year with coach, roomette, and full bedroom in various legs of the trip. I LOVED it! I hate to fly (motion sickness), so train travel is def my favorite way to transport (and no, I don't get sick! Go figure.) Great way to meet people and see this fantastic country.

I so enjoyed your video. I traveled with my daughter on the Amtrak Silver Star that runs from Miami to New York and less than a month ago. We hopped on in South Carolina and away we went and this being my first time on a train and to New York. What recent memories your trek across the States brought back! We also rode the sleeper car. My apologies if this was mentioned elsewhere: The Lake Shore Limited originated on the New York Central in 1897 and ran until 1956; it was supplanted by the 20th Century Limited that started in 1948. Amtrak brought back the name when it took over intercity rail passenger service in 1971. Also, the Mississippi River crossing you showed at 13:44 is of the eastbound California Zephyr at Burlington, Iowa. The bridge pictured is a drawbridge (more accurately a "lift bridge" where one entire span lifts) while the bridge at Fort Madison, Iowa is a swing bridge, where the main span swings 90 degrees.
I took an Amtrak trip in 2021 from Chicago to Boston, NYC, Atlanta, Dallas, and LA (I was supposed to go to Seattle and back to Chicago, but that leg got cancelled). I had a coach ticket, but spent most of my time in the observation car. It was one of the coolest experiences I've had traveling, although it was difficult at times ... wearing a mask the whole time, eating microwaved hot dogs, unable to shower, etc. But I have very fond memories of it!
Coach can be comfortable given certain conditions. I traveled NY to Albuquerque a few years ago. I’m 6'2" and found I was too tall to sleep comfortably. It’s probably a better choice for smaller - and younger - people. Legroom in coach is more like first on an airplane.

if you want to have some fun travel the train during the winter, like in february. i rode the chief from kansas city to los angeles(sp). the bedroom cars are awesome. it was really weird when the train went thru the snow on the tracks.
What a fantastic trip! I always wanted to do something like this with my father. We were really poor growing up and never left the state of CA. When I graduated college, I told myself I would get a good job and take us across the US and the world. Sadly he passed away before we could do that. I’m glad you were able to do so with your father!
What an amazing journey that was! Fun fact, 108 is actually a Heritage Unit. It’s painted in the Phase VI Livery for Amtrak’s 50th Anniversary. Also, it seems you also saw Amtrak 824 on the Southwest Chief. 824 was originally built as a P40DC, the predecessor to the P42DC, and while many P40s and in storage, the Auto Train does use P40s, and some P40s still roam the rails. I myself have seen P40s used on the Silver Star a couple times.

No Disney ride can begin to match this one. Especially with your Father. Wonderful conversations and seeing the beautiful scenery flow by. Something of a smug feeling in being comfy, enjoying a coffee, wine or beer. And at night as the wintry darkness slides by, you lay warm in your birth to await to hot coffee and perhaps a hearty English type breakfast. The full Monty!☺

My only experience of Amtrak was back in 2005. We were going from Manchester, no, the original one, to a wedding in The Bahamas. I knew that we could fly direct from London to Nassau but I got a bit carried away. Anyway, New York to Baltimore was the first leg which ran on time although the train was drab and very basic with low backed bench seats. But the reason I chose the train was so we could see the land and speak to people. Which we did. The lady in the buffet car told us to look out of the windows in about 10 minutes. We did and saw a sign in a field telling us we were crossing the Mason Dixon Line. Being on the train allowed us to see the damage done to Baltimore by defence cuts. The city was trying to drag itself up by its bootlaces but there was a certain air of unease in some areas. As we left Baltimore it was the hottest day of the year at 102°F and that was the week they'd chosen to overhaul the A/C. We'd booked a sleeper for the last leg to Charleston SC a Silver Service dinner came with it. Unfortunately, as we were getting on, people in black trousers and white tunics were getting off. Because of the heat the trains on the southern part of the network were running at reduced speed and the staff were running out of hours so were on the next train back north. So crisps and sandwiches for us. I awoke quite early and lay there looking out of the window, listening to the sound of the gongs as we went through level crossings and was amazed at the site of bungalows with chain link fencing around the garden and a large dog asleep on its back next to a Pick-up. Pure gold. Anyway, Charleston was wonderful, with really friendly people who would strike up a conversation with you for no other reason than to have a conversation. My impression of Amtrak was that it really needed a lot of money, but that it made a great alternative to flying - if you weren't in a desperate hurry. But for us, it became part of the holiday and that made a difference. The only thing about the journey l really didn't like was having to take camera bag and personal documents with us when we got off for a smoke as the door to the cabin wouldn't lock from the outside. Would I do it again? Yes.
Born and raised in Chicago I miss it so much since I turned 52 i moved out to Gatlinburg Tennessee which is incredible beautiful but the best is when I seen you eat that deep dish pizza oh mama that look so damn good

Took the train from New Orleans to Kansas City back in the 80s. An overnight run. Really enjoyed it. My grandad had a friend that had been a cook on the Super Chief. Guy was an excellent cook and catered partys for my granddad and others. His bar bq ribs were the best I've had to this day. Tamales were also a specialty of his. RIP Floyd Perkins.

I feel your pain . My dad died in 2017.(From complications of pneumonia). Still miss him to this day.

Back in 1955, i was a young girl. My mom remarried and she and daddy took me to california to meet his family. I never forgort leaving chicago. Dome diner cars, pink table linens, roses on the table, gold colored utensils, the upper bunk with nlue night light and a small window. I was so excited i watched outside passing by. The kindness of the porters, the shirley temple drink in the bar car... and much more daddy took a picture of us in our compartment, and i have the silliest smile on my face.. the train stopped in reno and ad I lts got off to gamble for the layever. The porter was responsible, kind of " baby-sitting ".from afar . Brought me hot cocoa and cookies.. america needs her trains again. Air travel is brutally stressful

Well, most of us would cross this distance on a jet aircraft, getting there in a few hours.
A TGV averaging 200 mph would still take 14 hours. A maglev train would still take eight hours (and be exponentially more expensive than wheel on rail HSR).
In North America, trains are the scenic route that you take for the view. If you want to get there quickly, the only way is jet aircraft. 🙂
Look at the other free countries that are comparable in geographic size (Russia and China don't count, as they are not free): Canada and Australia. Neither has a nationwide system of HSR public transit, for the same reason that we do not. We'd sink hundreds of billions into it, possibly trillions, and the end product would struggle to go half as fast as jet aircraft.
Just remember, in the near future we'll have supersonic flight over land again, because Lockheed and NASA have discovered an aircraft shape that lets you break the sound barrier with a barely audible sonic boom (and no windows broken). Such an aircraft would only take 2.5 hours to cross the country, versus 14 for wheel on rail HSR. 🙂

Actually, in Japan rail travel does cut time and money. The Bullet Trains get you there faster than air travel.

Idk, nearly 4k for two people and the accommodations are not very spacious. I would love to take a trip like this, but honestly for that same price I can literally do a cruise with more activities included or fly down to Mexico for an all inclusive resort stay, play the cards right alcohol included.

Not at all. Did you see how many empty spots they had? And yet the price is still so high? It's because privileged use of the tracks was handed over to private companies after taxpayers largely funded the development of the lines. Now passenger trains have to share the tracks with commercial freight, and the commercial freight gets priority, and the cost of taking up space with passenger cars is passed on to the consumer. That's why it's so expensive.
It's so slow because auto makers like Elon Musk lobby against the development of modern bullet trains. Otherwise you could cross the USA in under 24 hours, including 30 minute stops in half a dozen cities.
If you at it as more a journey and less like mere transportation the price seems more reasonable. You get three nights of sleeping accommodations plus almost four days of meals included in that cost, including access to the train station lounges at both ends and in Chicago.
Of course, coach is also a much, much cheaper option, especially if your journey is shorter than this.

As a matter of fact, it’s supposed to be way cheaper than flight. And this wasn’t luxury like Orient Express. You can fly first class for 3 grand.

Where I am it is also about saving money since it is a lot less expensive (and a lot more comfortable) than a plane trip.
Over the last 30 years I have traveled across country 10 times (from Los Angeles to Baltimore and back again). I took Greyhound 5 times; I drove 3 times; and I took a plane twice. I never took Amtrak. I enjoyed the video, especially since I plan to go Amtrak the next time, in 2025.

I'm glad you took your dad with you on this trip. When I was five my mom and I took an Amtrak from Michigan to California. Despite developing an inner ear infection on the way there, I had a great time. She passed away last June and after watching this video I've dug out the album with our pictures from that trip. One of these days I'll have to do this again.
Wow, this made me kind of tear up. I wish I could have done a trip like this with my folks before they passed. They were my best friends! I am glad you were able to do it (though ear infections can be miserable, especially as a kid!). How long did it take then (do you remember, as you were little!)?

I know they aren't the main focus of the videos, but your shots of the countryside passing by are gorgeous. The image of the mesa outside the dining room table while waiting for lunch in New Mexico (21:28) is beautiful, for one example.

FYI, the Metropolitan Lounge in Chicago has some really nice private showers available to sleeper guests for free, complete with soap, shampoo, and towels. You only need to ask for it at the lounge desk. Thanks for a great Amtrak video, it looks like you had a fun trip.

I traveled on Amtrak in a roomette from West Palm Beach Florida to New York in July 2021. The roomette was decent but thankfully I was solo as it would be a tad cramped for two . The on board shower was working which was great. It was definitely a nice change from the craziness that flying can be sometimes. I really enjoyed the video 😎😎😎

Pretty cool that you were able to do this trip with your Dad! One of my few regrets with my Dad, who passed away a few years ago, is that we never did anything like this. Even though I offered to make it happen, he just wasn't interested. Doesn't mean I won't be doing this trip, just means he won't be there, well maybe in spirit?

Thanks so much for sharing. I took Amtrack from San Diego to San Francisco. The way up we were in regular seats. Due to my chronic pain, on the way back we got the sleeper. I was so impressed with the sleeper and the food was beyond our expetations. My only fear with doing a trip like this is changing trains. I go so confused inside train stations.
Growing up in Santa Fe, NM for my early youth, it's cool af seeing Lamy train station briefly in the video. Historic train spot. Always wanted to film a western there.
I travelled LA to NY on Amtrak in 2005 via Chicago and DC. Coach the whole way! Despite that, fantastic experience, this video has brought back fond memories of a stop in Albuquerque where we got off the train for Mexican food, crossing that bridge in Iowa (in daylight!) and a trip up the Sears Tower and a deep pan pizza in Chicago. Would love to do it again.

From the sheer size to the amazing varying scenery, to the extreme weather, you can say that you truly experienced the US with your dad! Nice. My daughter and I went from L.A to Chicago. We had the bathroom suite. It had a shower and toilet in our room. It was a awesome.
For the future, there are showers in the Chicago Union Station lounge (in third floor I think) so no need for hotel in Chi. There is also a food lounge on the 2nd floor above the baggage check in area if the snacks in the lounge are not hearty enough for you. Lastly, you can board from the Union station lounge with priority by telling the attendant there and showing your room/roomette ticket. You can even do Red cap service from the lounge to the tracks (they take your bags and give you a ride to the correct train cart) if you have mobility issues (tip appreciated).
So wonderful to share your journeys with your family. Just like glances outside as the Midwest rolls past, your time with your loved ones will fly. Cheers to your dad and to you, Will.

Not done the train ride, but I've driven from Los Angeles to Dallas and back, and New Mexico was the big surprise. Such a beautiful state, and Old Town Albuquerque was amazing, really enjoyed it.
Great video. My family traveled roundtrip from NY to LA several times when I was a kid - back when a family could afford to do that - although we didn't have the luxury of sleeping cars. We sat up in coach for 3 days! But, it was fun. Thanks for letting me relive a part of my childhood. Keep up the great work.

I Lived in Gansevoort NY, north of Albany. THE tracks were a couple of hundred feet from the house. Used to watch the trains go by every day.

I've just come back from a long rail journey that included the Lakeshore Limited. I couldn't help immediately noticing the very strange route you assigned it, which shows it as much more direct than it actually is. In fact, the train goes due north to Albany and then due west to Buffalo, from where it hugs the lakes to Chicago. That said, I'm sure many have dreamed that such a direct route between New York City and Buffalo would be created!
Yes, the defunct Broadway Limited was way more direct, traveling via central Pennsylvania.

Not only is the Lakeshore Limited a direct route, but the Lakeshore Limited used to run on its own express track between NYC and Chicago, making only limited stops and was five hours faster than the one we have today. But of course, that was way back in the 1950's and 1960's when the Lakeshore Limited was known as the 20th Century Limited and was run by Penn Central and Amtrak did not exist.
The highlight of this video for me is seeing you and your dad at the end.

As a True & Blue Yankee, born in Philadelphia, & presently living in San Diego, I always find it fascinating to see see things from the perspective of foreigners as they explore the USA 🇺🇸. This was an excellent video, featuring quality time with your Dad. And, actually, I was quite surprised at the end when you revealed the cost of the trip. Honestly, I thought it was going to be a lot more expensive. I think I'm going to take this trip (in the opposite direction) one day with my wife. She is Brazilian, from Rio de Janeiro--so, this would be a great way to show her a large bit of her new country.

I did almost that same route in 2003, but started from Boston instead (as part of a longer round trip, I returned via the California Zephyr and the Lake Shore Limited). The one difference, I went by coach. It was perfectly fine, the coach seats are wide, recline fully, and are comfortable. That being said, I have since crossed the country by sleeper, and will always opt for that instead, haha.
Out of all the things you’ve done, this one is one you’ll remember and cherish. Always good to spend family time

Several years back I had been assigned to bedroom A and found it most uncomfortable, the four others have considerably more room. Also the WC/shower door fully opens as well. I use a travel agent and have refused to accept A on the trip CHI to LAX. Service was great and their food is really good. The situation may be different for you, but I am on a cane and hobble along. Great video!
I travelled coast to coast round trip last year with coach, roomette, and full bedroom in various legs of the trip. I LOVED it! I hate to fly (motion sickness), so train travel is def my favorite way to transport (and no, I don't get sick! Go figure.) Great way to meet people and see this fantastic country.

My apologies if this was mentioned elsewhere: The Lake Shore Limited originated on the New York Central in 1897 and ran until 1956; it was supplanted by the 20th Century Limited that started in 1948. Amtrak brought back the name when it took over intercity rail passenger service in 1971. Also, the Mississippi River crossing you showed at 13:44 is of the eastbound California Zephyr at Burlington, Iowa. The bridge pictured is a drawbridge (more accurately a "lift bridge" where one entire span lifts) while the bridge at Fort Madison, Iowa is a swing bridge, where the main span swings 90 degrees.

I took an Amtrak trip in 2021 from Chicago to Boston, NYC, Atlanta, Dallas, and LA (I was supposed to go to Seattle and back to Chicago, but that leg got cancelled). I had a coach ticket, but spent most of my time in the observation car. It was one of the coolest experiences I've had traveling, although it was difficult at times ... wearing a mask the whole time, eating microwaved hot dogs, unable to shower, etc. But I have very fond memories of it!
Coach can be comfortable given certain conditions. I traveled NY to Albuquerque a few years ago. I’m 6'2" and found I was too tall to sleep comfortably. It’s probably a better choice for smaller - and younger - people.
Legroom in coach is more like first on an airplane.

if you want to have some fun travel the train during the winter, like in february. i rode the chief from kansas city to los angeles(sp). the bedroom cars are awesome. it was really weird when the train went thru the snow on the tracks.
What a fantastic trip! I always wanted to do something like this with my father. We were really poor growing up and never left the state of CA. When I graduated college, I told myself I would get a good job and take us across the US and the world.
Sadly he passed away before we could do that. I’m glad you were able to do so with your father!
What an amazing journey that was! Fun fact, 108 is actually a Heritage Unit. It’s painted in the Phase VI Livery for Amtrak’s 50th Anniversary.
Also, it seems you also saw Amtrak 824 on the Southwest Chief. 824 was originally built as a P40DC, the predecessor to the P42DC, and while many P40s and in storage, the Auto Train does use P40s, and some P40s still roam the rails. I myself have seen P40s used on the Silver Star a couple times.

I've taken Amtrak from San Diego to Eugene, OR. and another time to Reno, Nv. among other shorter trips. Wonderful trips on them all.
No Disney ride can begin to match this one. Especially with your Father. Wonderful conversations and seeing the beautiful scenery flow by. Something of a smug feeling in being comfy, enjoying a coffee, wine or beer. And at night as the wintry darkness slides by, you lay warm in your birth to await to hot coffee and perhaps a hearty English type breakfast. The full Monty!☺

My only experience of Amtrak was back in 2005. We were going from Manchester, no, the original one, to a wedding in The Bahamas. I knew that we could fly direct from London to Nassau but I got a bit carried away.
Anyway, New York to Baltimore was the first leg which ran on time although the train was drab and very basic with low backed bench seats. But the reason I chose the train was so we could see the land and speak to people. Which we did. The lady in the buffet car told us to look out of the windows in about 10 minutes. We did and saw a sign in a field telling us we were crossing the Mason Dixon Line.
Being on the train allowed us to see the damage done to Baltimore by defence cuts. The city was trying to drag itself up by its bootlaces but there was a certain air of unease in some areas.
As we left Baltimore it was the hottest day of the year at 102°F and that was the week they'd chosen to overhaul the A/C. We'd booked a sleeper for the last leg to Charleston SC a Silver Service dinner came with it. Unfortunately, as we were getting on, people in black trousers and white tunics were getting off. Because of the heat the trains on the southern part of the network were running at reduced speed and the staff were running out of hours so were on the next train back north. So crisps and sandwiches for us.
I awoke quite early and lay there looking out of the window, listening to the sound of the gongs as we went through level crossings and was amazed at the site of bungalows with chain link fencing around the garden and a large dog asleep on its back next to a Pick-up. Pure gold.
Anyway, Charleston was wonderful, with really friendly people who would strike up a conversation with you for no other reason than to have a conversation.
My impression of Amtrak was that it really needed a lot of money, but that it made a great alternative to flying - if you weren't in a desperate hurry. But for us, it became part of the holiday and that made a difference. The only thing about the journey l really didn't like was having to take camera bag and personal documents with us when we got off for a smoke as the door to the cabin wouldn't lock from the outside.
Would I do it again? Yes.
Born and raised in Chicago I miss it so much since I turned 52 i moved out to Gatlinburg Tennessee which is incredible beautiful but the best is when I seen you eat that deep dish pizza oh mama that look so damn good

Took the train from New Orleans to Kansas City back in the 80s. An overnight run. Really enjoyed it. My grandad had a friend that had been a cook on the Super Chief. Guy was an excellent cook and catered partys for my granddad and others. His bar bq ribs were the best I've had to this day. Tamales were also a specialty of his. RIP Floyd Perkins.
