They're trying to save their high profile dam. The threat of dam collapse must be pretty high for them to do this.
All Dams built have a maximum capacity. Of course they opened the flood Gates and started to release water once it was 6' over its safe normal limit. Happens in every nation on earth.
There would have been warnings but when a 1 in 80 year event occurs many simply do not believe the warnings. They say "I have lived here 70 years. It will never flood here."
Happened downstream from where I lived in Australia in 2011. A one in 500 year rainfall event in the Mountains. People did not believe the warnings in a small Town in the path.
About 45 died.
My Brother knew what was on he way. He called me at about 3pm. All info is live online. He said I hope everybody down Lockyer Creek is heading for the hills.
The Water Levels have risen 20' (6m) in ten Minutes at the top of Lockyer Creek.
In most advanced Nations today they have auto measuring Stations. You can check online. Farmers know this. Not one farmer on that Creek Died because they understand!
All 45 that died were in a small Town near the Creek. It hit there about 5pm. Two hours after my Brother called me.
You can't save the ignorant who know.
A number of people had tried to warn the people in that Town. There warnings were ignored.
This is just what I think might happen if that dam breaks:
- A whole load of people will die and more will be displaced due to lost property.
- Power generation will be distrupted, blackouts would possibly knock out several industrial hubs established in China. Loss in economic activity + Precautions for the coronavirus.
- The flood would cause billions of dollars in property damages, it would take years to rebuild. This includes cultural sites most important to the Chinese people, lost history.
- Infrastructure within the Yangtze region would be heavily damaged, search and rescue would be extremely dangerous to rescue workers.
- It would cause massive changes in the ecology of the biomes affected by the flood. The ground would also be unsuitable for construction.
- Countries that are share the Yangtze will be affected to a degree.

Weather forecast for Hubei province is 10 straight days of rain. Doesn't look like that will help.
They basically said if they didn't release some water the 3 gorges dam would collapse and things would be worse, plus the head of the CCP would look weak making a half assed dam.

They love NBA, American brands, American universities and American people. Chinese universities even encourage student to study here in the states, they love traveling in the USA and buy bunch of stuff, American, before going back to China. As they say in China, local stuff are only for poor people while, American brands are for rich people. I followed this whole construction back in the '90s, so many bad things happened and the worst part, the quality was terrible.
_Most of the concrete is still NOT cured, a fact._
_The steel used was found to be extremely brittle._ (Boron based, cheaper to make)
_Most of the foundation basically sits on bedrock in block form!_
_When they were building this they originally said, "It will withstand a 10,000-year flood."_
_Years later they changed their story and said, "It would withstand a 1,000-year flood."_
_Recently it's been changed to a 100-year flood!_

Building a dam on the Yangtze River was probably not a very good idea. If the dam had been built on the Mississippi River, most people would have stated the project will be

Seems to me that it would be a little difficult to keep secret all those huge columns of water rising into the air from the bottom of that dam.
I'm no engineer but would it be better to construct several or more dams rather than one big dam on a huge river subject to flooding?

Structural failure would likely happen at the dams foundation which may slide, but the dam's wall will not collapse.

I couldn't believe the satellite images of how bad the dam has moved/weakened. I too was thinking that it was possibly a warped image until I saw a video captured by a helicopter of how warped the dam is!!! It looks worse than the satellite images. If I lived anywhere near that dam or river, I would be grabbing necessities and getting to higher ground!

What do you mean secretly discharging floodwater? Discharging floodwater is a normal operation of any dams all over the world.
It is a terrible thing that happened. Did they even have time to warn them? China is getting an unusual amount of rain, all damns should be releasing water to prevent collapse.

They are discharging at 7000 cubic meters per second as opposed to 5000 cubic meters per second that they use in flood and overflow in the past

As many people that have stayed in China for a time must have noticed how buildings are cheaply built and soon fall apart. Substandard building supplies are used as much of the money ends up in the pockets and not for quality supplies which is needed when building a dam of that size. It is only a matter of time. Perhaps in our life time. When ad if it goes millions of lives will end in a short time. When I saw they started building this Three Gorges Dam I thought oh no!

This dam was built with gates that open at the bottom to keep silt from building up. Of course they are releasing flood water on the overflow spillways. Better that then the dam collapse. Before the dam over 250,000 people died each year because of flooding. Now at least there is some control and a whole lot fewer deaths.
