Why is she huge? Why do sold out stadiums all over the world sing her lyrics with her for 3.5 hour on the eras tour? How does she perform that night after night? Olympic caliber athletic performer of her own exquisite lyrics? Why is she loved? Character: Gratitude, Generosity, Compassion, Humility, Authenticity, Empathy, Love, Courage, Integrity, Spiritual Growth, Determination, Inspiration, Creativity. Astonishing.

The song also is an homage to the silent film actress and “It Girl” Clara Bow who had a nervous breakdown and spent time in psych wards getting shock treatments in the 1930s.
And yes, Ethan Hawke and Josh Charles for the Dead Poets Society appear here on the first video for the Tortured Poets Department. They’re identified in the credits.

@@IzzyIzenstain Swift's attention to detail, and Easter Eggs, is well known. The names on their doctor coats are the names of their characters from The Dead Poets Society. There's two numbers on the 'Forget Him' pill bottle. One is Swifts birth date and the other is the album release date. The brain wave printout you briefly see writes the line "I love you, it's ruining my life". That's what Post Malone is looking at before rushing to disconnect the shock therapy. The machine creating the printout has TTPD on it, the initials of the album title. I'm 68 and took the dive into Swifts music last January to see what the fuss was about. I've actually been rather impressed with her songwriting, particularly her lyrics, while her music videos are quite good and sometimes fun to search for the details.
If you have Netflix I'd recommend watching her Miss Americana documentary. It's quite good and will give you some insight into her career. It covers up to Kanye West and Kim Kardashian conspiring (it's the only way to describe it) to destroy Swifts reputation and end her career with a recorded phone call. Then Swifts comeback with the Reputation album and tour. It would be several years after the documentary was made before the full recording of the phone call Kim and Kanye made was leaked. It proved they had edited the version they released and their claims about Swift were a lie.

The more you get into Taylor the more you start to crave the puzzle and mystery of what inspired the song and then you see correlation between songs. This video has a black dog walk across the screen…there is a song in this album called the Black Dog. She mentions Florida in the song and there is a song called Florida!!! in this album too. The electro shock in the video and the silent film era look is a nod to Clara Bow, also a song on the album, but she had mental health issues and received shock treatments to cure herself of the depression from heartbreaks and the stress/pressure of being the first “it girl”. This song is like the opening paragraph for a writing assignment. It sets the moods and hints at what is to come. It would have helped to know what music you like, then we could point you in the right direction. Taylor’s first albums are country. She then moved into pop. Her Reputation album is more of a rock vibe with bits of rap. Folklore and Evermore are sister albums. This latest album, Taylor has trademarked as Female Rage: The Musical. I personally would start you off with Exile the Long Pond secession ft. Bon Iver.

Lovely breakdown and thoughts. You mention Paul Mccartney, who was just seen dancing with swifties at her show at Wembley. He has spoken her praises many times over the years.
She has been accused of being overly autobiographical, but she dabbled in more storytelling with her Folklore/Evermore albums and again with Tortured Poets Department, which has a lot of parallels to greek mythology and other famous poets and fables woven into her lyrics.

Actually Taylor started performing at age eleven, and was signed by Sony at age thirteen, the youngest artist ever signed by them, she’s now 34. She started out as a country performer but switched to pop. She has always said of herself that she’s a songwriter who also sings, and she can play piano, acoustic and electric guitar and the banjo. She’s won so many awards; nominated 52 times for Grammy awards and has won 14 times. She’s won 40 American Music Awards, a Prime Time Emmy Award (TV), 39 Billboard Music Awards, and 23 MTV video awards. But she still does things like pick up empty plates and glasses in the Kelsey family’s suite at the Kansas City Chiefs stadium, and gives a very large donation to the local food bank in every city she tours in. She treats her dancers, musicians, stage hands and drivers really well. One of her truck drivers wives revealed last year that Taylor gave every one a $100,000. Christmas bonus in addition to their regular pay. She didn’t book any tour dates for March because the lead guitarist in her band wife was due to have a baby and she wanted to make sure he was home for that. She makes time to visit with fans who maybe suffering from something like cancer, has special youngsters brought to the edge of the stage during her concerts to present them with the hat she wears for a couple of songs. She just seems like a genuinely nice person who also is an excellent writer and singer. I really recommend you watch some of her live performances from the Reputation or Eras tours. Her songs are autobiographical and she uses a lot of metaphors. So a “drug” can also be a relationship, that may have gone bad.

  • @biblioholic7139

She's huge because her inspiration is her emotions which means there is a high likelihood that anyone with human emotions can be hit in the feels by one or more of her songs and once someone finds their gateway song (usually an album track) they get sucked into the rest of her discography. For some people she articulates their emotions better than they can. And it doesn't hurt that her live performances can be anything from her and an instrument all the way up to arena shows with all the bells and whistles. Finally, she built her fan base and hasn't done anything to throw it away, unlike some of the big stars who seem to want to test how much their fans will put up with before bailing.

She writes all her songs, many without cowriters. The videos and tours are her concepts. She directs her own videos. This song is about Matty. She had a 6yr relationship. They broke up & then she fell hard 4 Matty. He was her "move on drug" but the "effects were temporary ". Video has tons of Easter eggs. Ex: Matty loves typewriters. The song Hits different was released separately to the Midnights album but is a part of the Til Dawn edition. It's technically the last track of the album to be released before The Tortured Poets Department, along with You're losing me.
It references people knocking at her door, coming to take her to an asylum (Is that your key, on the door? Is it okay? Is it you? Or have they come to take me away?) The first lyric in the first track of TTPD is 'I was supposed to be sent away, but they forgot to come and get me'.
In You're losing me, she references another song, Champagne Problems from the Evermore album, which in turn also focuses on a mad woman and an asylum.

Taylor is very autobiographical, but does tell stories. She is known for it. This video has many themes that represent her album. Clara Bow the “it girl” from silent movies, typewriters, insane asylum, black dog, etc. the album deals with a breakup or two and her questioning her sanity, her mental health, her relationship with fame, the music industry, her past present and future.
Why is Taylor so huge? She started in country, then country pop/rock as teenager, then transitioned into purely pop at 24, then switched to indie/folk music in 2020 working with Aaron Dessner from the National. They have collaborated on all 5 of her albums since 2020, all her re-recordings, and one National album, and with Bon Iver /Big Red Machine. But why is she so popular? Versatility. Relatable lyrics. She writes all her songs, writes & directs her music videos.
Here is a small sampling of a lot of sides to her. Make it a reaction video going through these.
    Debut: our song music video.
    Fearless. You belong with me.
Speak Now: back to December music video.
Red. All too well, 10 minute version lyric video. (There is a short film but for first time with the song it can be distracting)
1989. Blank Space and Wildest Dreams music videos. Out of the woods live 1989 world tour.
Reputation. Ready for it music video. Don’t blame me live Reputation stadium tour. Long live/new years day live Reputation stadium tour.
Lover. Cornelia St and Death by a thousand Cuts live in Paris. False God Live SNL.
Folklore: exile lyric video. My tears ricochet lyric video.
Evermore. Evermore lyric video & Willow live Eras tour film.
Midnights. Anti-hero music video. Maroon and Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve lyric videos.
TTPD. So long London, the black dog, how did it end lyric videos.

His lyrics are autobiographical, cryptic and cathartic to a certain extent, but that is more for the common fan. Taylor knows how to blur his autobiographical narratives by adding and removing elements, creating stories from small inspirations, using his literary resources. This makes his writings take on multiple layers and lend themselves to multiple interpretations. Taylor is looked down upon for writing mainly about love but she is a great writer and narrator (storyteller). Not only does she have the quality to create narrative images in an exceptional way portraying human emotions, she also masters literary language like any expert writer on the subject.

She embodies each song--if she's a hardass in a song (Don't Blame Me, Look What You Made Me Do, Who's Afraid of Little Old Me), she sells it. The song and video to a degree are her talking to two men in her life that she was dating. She described them as something cooking in an oven ending and then falling into something cooking in a microwave. A long flame followed by a short flame, etc. The first broke because he allegedly cheated, she took him back and it slowly faded because he never was ready even after 4,5 & 6 years to marry and plan babies until he lied in the end to keep her around. She left for her tour then fell into a new relationship with an old friend who after "A Fortnight" or so, said they would get married and have children and that he was the love of her life (The title track The Tortured Poets Department sheds light on his promises). He then cheated and ghosted her and left her completely lifeless while on the tour. Rest of the story is on the album but this song is essentially a recap that leads into the album. The poetry aspect slips in with the wife and neighbour references

This song is likely about her on again and off again relationship with Matty Healy from The 1975. Most recently they had a brief fling "for a fortnight" last year after the break up of her 6-1/2 year relationship with Joe Alwyn was announced in March 2023 at the beginning of the ERAS tour. The video is set in The Tortured Poets Department (TTPD). The period clothing is from the late 1800s. Taylor has been likened to Emily Dickinson with her poetic lyricism.

Great reaction!! The Swifties are gonna LOVE you!! Thank you for your insightful look at this song. Taylor says she's a songwriter who sings, not a singer who writes. The story and lyrics are most important to her. Her official lyric videos are great if you react to more TTPD. The Black Dog, The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived, Peter and So Long, London are some of my favs. Based on this reaction, I think you're really going to find a lot to delve into. She has a varied catalog. She started in country, then into pop, then folk...throw in some 80s synth, hiphop, alternative and rock for good measure. 18 years of music...there's something for everyone. Subbing for more. Thank you again for your reaction!!

Hi, great reaction, Taylor is known for her songwriting being her way of processing her feelings and the things that happen to her. That her fans who grew up with her, had basically had access to her diary.
She has in more recent works played with more made up characters and scenarios, although some fans have drawn very clear parallels to her life at the time of writing. In a lot of cases Taylor has enough ambiguity, that different ideas exist about the meaning,
This song is the lead single of her recent album, written over the last 2 years, but focusing on the 12 months prior to release where she started her Eras Tour, broke up with her long term partner and jumped into an intense, but short lived fling with an old flame, (possibly the miracle move on drug), that she described as a manic phase.
Taylor's moved genres, challenged established industry standards and works extremely hard at her craft,
She was signed by sony music publishing, Nashville at 14 as a songwriter, with a development deal, but ultimately walked away to sign with a new agency

I have followed Post Malone since 2016 and have enjoyed watching him develop his music on his albums from Stony to his latest foray into country music which is his true love. Some of my favorite songs from Post , Otherside, Blame it Me, Euthanasia , Love Hate Letter to Alcohol, Green Thumb, Something Real.
He has also did a Nirvana Tribute (on UA-cam) during Covid that was pretty awesome. My first listen to his country voice was on a fund raiser for Texas after our ice storm in 2021 that caused much damage in our state. It was called Post Malone goes Country where he does covers with Dwight Yoakam’s band. Awesome! Check out some of his music. Oh My God I can listen to you talking for hours 🙏 please react whenever you have the time and willingness to her albums Folklore and Evermore or her Long Pond Session, it will be so interesting to hear your interpretations of her lyrics.
I think she's so big and so connected with her audience because it's nearly 20 years career and she's autobiographical but the ordinary people can relate to her music.
That is very good writer in my opinion because she's the last person to be relatable - successful, billionaire, country/ pop star but with words and melodies you realise that everyone goes through the same emotions.
Also she's very hard working, she's not the great singer so she went through vocal training to be able to sing her own songs, not a great dancer but learnt to dance - everything she was lacking she worked though the years to better herself. She's more theater type performer. In her teenager years she baked cookies and wrote handwritten letters to every radio when they played her single. Very driven from young age.
And in my opinion many fans love her personality and forgive her mistakes because she's always kind towards everyone, you can never catch her in bad mood or tired on stage, every single night she delivers. In every award show she's always supportive of other winners, always first to stand up, always dancing (and drinking😅).
She's not only writing the song but the melodies as well, hooks, she's famous for her bridges.

You mentioned that you like interwoven stuff. You get A LOT of that with Swift. A few examples from this particular album are from the songs Fortnight, Down Bad and The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived. These three songs reference work from previous albums.
The opening lyrics in Fortnight say, “I was supposed to be sent away but they forget to come and get me.” The last line from her last album, Midnights, says, “Is that you or have they come to take me away?”
Down Bad has a line that says, “How dare you think it’s romantic, leaving me safe and stranded.” In her song, New Romantics (1989 album), she sings, “Please leave me stranded. It’s so Romantic.”
The song, The Smallest Man, has the lyrics, “But you are what you did.” The song, Innocent (Speak Now album), has the lyrics, “Who you are is not what you did.”
Now, I’ll be the first to admit that some Swift fans can get carried away “linking” her songs and albums. That started, though, because it’s clear she does make reference her other work far too often for it to be coincidental. I think the references I made here are probably too specific to be coincidences (although it’s possible at least one of them is).
I heard an interview with someone who works for some organization studies popular music. They’ve actually created a working group to study “inter-textual” references in Swift’s work.

Could you please react to the Ivy or Evermore (ft Bon Iver) lyric videos by Taylor? I loved your takes on the different points of symbolism in the video.
Just a note - Taylor does have good music videos, but her strengths are her lyricism and her live performances. If you’re interested in seeing live performances vs watching lyric videos, I’d recommend the long pond studio sessions (for low key acoustic renditions of her album folklore) or the clip of I Did Something Bad from the reputation stadium tour (for bombastic showmanship). Two very different sides of her as an artist.

Yes, she does tend to write autobiographical songs (although not always, and not always literally). Swift is someone who knows how to mine her own experiences and her own pain in the service of art but that doesn't mean it's always exactly about one of her own experiences. This one kind of is, though - minus the wives and husbands.

Not sure if it’s been said yet or not but “the miracle move on drug” is likely another man. Like they say, the best want to get over a man, is to get under another one.
This is one of the more mysterious songs on her new album because it’s not straightforward in its story telling like she does most of the time. The rest of the album is much more autobiographical. With stories, but those of us who know the history don’t have to do much guessing about the story.

Yes she tends to write autobiographical, and often they're really relatable despite the wealth and privilege divide, if that makes sense. This song is at its core about how you can have a deep, visceral connection with someone, it ends, and then you have to live alongside that person as though nothing happened, to live in fragile politeness. Her framework is as neighbors; her former lover's wife is watering flowers like nothing's wrong. Taylor's figurative 'husband' is cheating, and she's JUST as mad at him as at her former lover's wife watering flowers. The mundane misery of suburbia, in a way.

  • @erikahutchcraft1742
    @erikahutchcraft1742 6 місяців тому +1

I think her “miracle move on drug” was having an intimate relationship with someone else, like a hookup. Like the saying “best way to get over someone is to get under someone else”.
Sure but like she says it’s always temporary until you deal with the deep pain of a break up.
Just my opinion and FYI most non USA people are not aware that fortnight is not a term that Americans have any clue of outside of the computer game.
It is definitely a “British” terminology for an American and purposely used on her part.
I know “fortnight” because of regency time romance novels I used to read that were set in the U.K.
Most American reactors have to Google the meaning of fortnight, just to let you know, it’s interesting.
I knew is was British terminology but thought everyone still knew the definition- nope
I started watching reactions and it was funny to see how people from different countries focused on different things.

I think I'll check out some Long Pond Sessions next, but I'm interested in hearing more of this record too.

One note of caution is Taylor makes all kinds of different songs, so she doesn't always sound like this.
