Izzy slowly seeing you turn into a swiftie is one of my unexpected joys this year. From being a casual observer to being my favorite commentator! Taylor Swift in my perspective is the girl next door that you overlook because she is plain - not the best singer, not the best dancer, not the best piano player, not the best guitar player. She is lanky and awkward, buck teeth growing up, clumsy. She can be beautiful now, sure, but not elegantly so. she’s marketable enough but again, you think she’s so plain. At everything. But then you give her a chance. And first you think, ok there’s something intriguing there. Good hooks. Then you dive deeper. Elegant thoughts. Something tugs at the heartstrings because she is so incredibly earnest, it’s hard not feel disarmed. She is honest. She is outspoken, but not in a pretentious way. And she can be very vulnerable. And it makes you remember the times when you were, giving you permission to feel things you never allowed yourself to feel. And she is incredibly intelligent, but not in an intimidating way. You got to know her, and when she smiles, you realize she glows a bit more. There is familiarity that is just comforting. It’s within reach. She’s accessible. You can sing to her songs in the karaoke more comfortably than let’s say, Adele songs. No need to interpret too deeply to distract you from the emotion. But it is not simple enough that you feel dumbed down. She is so incredibly simple that it’s actually profound. And someone glossy and naturally sleek and beautiful and seductive comes along that can distract you, but in that date, you think of the comfort you felt in the company of the girl next door, and how seen you felt, and how you cannot wait to go home from your fancy date so you can run to her and tell her she is the one. ❤
The line "cuz the story isnt mine anymore.." from The Manuscript makes me think about how once an artist puts a song out there, the meaning of the song no longer really "belongs" to them... they take a life of their own as people read into it through the lens of their own life experiences.
When you hear about she felt anxiety during that relationship and you hear the chorus on 1989, she really captured that feeling. That repetition feels like anxiety.
Piano seems to bring out a different level of emotion in Taylor during performances. If you pay attention, she often tips her head back whilst playing piano and you can tell that she's really feeling it during those moments. An example is during her performance of How Did It End during the eras tour. After she sings "It's happening again" during the bridge, she throws her head back and its like she becomes one with the piano in that moment and is channeling every bit of pain the situation caused into this instrument. It's really quite beautiful.
This is one of my favourite live performances of hers. I went back to watch the video (brilliant) and her live performance from the 1989 tour (epic) after 1st seeing this. The contrast between them is extraordinary.
When I think of paper airplanes, I think of their fragility and how they're not really meant to last. Or when you throw one, it could nosedive, or maybe fly for a short distance.
I love this performance- I was also not completely taken with the original album version, but this one is special. I think in particular I love this grammy session as well as the BBC studios performances she did for Lover songs because it's her performing live with a stripped back instrumental, and the audience is just sitting and listening. I know Taylor loves her fans and their interaction, but there's something about people just sitting and listening and appreciating the performance that I appreciate- also being able to hear an artist perform live without all the cheering and singing along from the audience.
This performance makes me so emotional. One of my favorites!! Great reaction and breakdown. and yes always start with the live performances when introducing Taylor. Especially the Grammy Museum or Long Pond Sessions. Loved this!!
“Two paper airplanes” is a great lyric and image on its own but it’s even more poetic when you know Harry had a necklace pendant of a paper airplane that he gave/loaned to Taylor while they were dating (or did they get matching ones?) and which she was pictured wearing at the time.
The opening words from Taylor before this performance and from you before watching this clip sum it up. Taylor gets to demonstrate the emotion behind her lyrics - the emotions were special to her, when she wrote them - the joy of a new romance, the anxiety she felt was real, the fact that they were doomed as a “couple” -(Harry Styles already known for his own fame) by the scrutiny of the paparazzi & fans, then the release of the emotional turmoil when it was actually over. You thought it was a simple, repetitive song when you were watching it in the 1989 concert. A lot of people do and that why Taylor gets the “untalented / repetitive / boring/ lazy lyrics / pop princess” label. Now, you appreciate the simple words that repeat throughout are the same ones that have different meanings throughout the song - that’s the genius in her lyric writing! Maybe this was always the way Taylor intended it to be - but record companies wanted a “hit” single. The repetitive lyrics and their pace also cleverly implying that they were “running” to keep one step ahead of the end, the anxiety of it all. They were just “paper planes” - flying high, fragile, but they weren’t going to be able to keep going for long distances. Taylor’s maturity now also allows her to express her emotions in a way that makes her feel comfortable about her own life. Another great analysis of discovering TS!
Thanks for reacting to this version- it’s been a long time since I checked it out and I forgot how beautiful it is! It’s one of those instances if you were to go back to the concert version, you’d probably like it more than the first go around. I love this stripped down version, but I also love the power and emotion evoked in the concert. Her growling through some of the lyrics, her moves, the beautiful back up singers adding so much…I love all of it! It’s really big, but I’m here for it as well as this version!
Taylor with a piano is always my favourite versions of her songs. They always make the song more emotional. She has a way of bringing peoples emotions to the surface. This is my first time watching your reactions. Will check out more. Thank you for sharing about yourself.
'You took a polaroid of us, then discovered, the rest of the world was black and white, but we were in screaming color' matches SO well with one of the first lines in Welcome To New York: 'kaleidoscope of loud heartbeats under coats.' The concept of a love that is so precious, so new, or the potential of it is so new that only the two of you know about it--but it's still glorious and loud in that hidden fragility.
✨Great one, Izzy! Your jaw clenched at "two paper airplanes flying" and I had to smile; it's so simple but so perfect. And how many times I've watched this just to get carried into that bridge...yep, good stuff. Last, I think the explanation of the song is invaluable here because the repetitive 'are we outta the woods' suddenly makes perfect sense when she describes the anxiety she was feeling. You can almost see her running...
The music video of “Out of the Woods” is really visually beautiful, with wolves in it.❤️ In a lot of Taylors interviews she says she dreams song lyrics. She will wake up and write songs down or will sing it into her phone. Izzy, do you ever dream of new songs for yourself??
Haven't seen this one and is amazing!!!! thanks for all the videos from this year. Hope next year is a great year for you Izzy. (Missing you in Patreon!!!)
she has another song like that, with the same words, but different emotion/meaning each time labyrinth on the midnights album: uh oh, i’m falling in love oh no, i’m falling in love oh, i’m falling in love
Awesome reaction! She is so great! You should do a reaction to the track "Soon You'll Get Better" Warning though its about her Mom struggles with repeated cancer diagnosis. Its a rough one to get through but absolutely gorgeous. The group "The Chicks" sing backup because that is her Moms favorite group. The banjo, violin and their harmonies are unbelievably beautiful together.
Her and Mary J Blige did a performance together with te song called doubt and its in my oinion one ofher performances .Also her singing the song Red in paris is a good one as well
Oh and I love Harry Styles more than I love Taylor for a ton of reasons but they were so young and him especially and he was so famous I'm pretty sure this was doomed from the start
Izzy check out Taylor with the singer of snow patrol collab in the song "the Last Time" there are a couple of live versions and if you like "exile" you will like that one I promise and it's so so understand on her Red album. I'm pretty sure there is a live version from the red tour and one from the X favor and I love that song and you will like it
The rest of the worl was black and white But we were in screaming color 🌈 The oficcial version is :thi is about Harry Styles. Buy I do believe thi is about another relationship of her
Wow! I’ve never seen this footage before. What a difference from her tour version. She knew the audience and was absolutely brilliant. She’s so talented and kind. It’s quite astonishing that people would not like a person as compassionate, kind and loving as Taylor. Thank you for this. Happy New Year, Izzy. Here’s to a wonderful 2025. 🎉🫶🏼🤍
I think it’s why her fan base is so big. Women empathize with the stories she tells.
Taylor’s performance of this song during her 1989 World Tour Live is also incredible!
He watched the 1989 Tour, it’s on his Patreon now!

he says that he watched that version within the first minute of this video 😆

Thanks! Lovely to hear! Thanks for a great analysis too!
this is the most accurate description of Taylor as an artist and why so many people love her so much. Thank you for this.

Such a beautiful rendition… the emotion within this song is hard to ignore in this performance.

This is my favorite track from 1989, the production completely captures that mixed feeling of anxiety and hope.

1989 is obviously almost all Harry. He wrote about Taylor too several times.
I agree. Part of why I loved 1989 so much is my love for Harry.
