New Minelab Vanquish 540 Test & Personal Review

- Took the Minelab Vanquish 540 Metal Detector to the Mountains & Beach to test its capabilities in different soils. Also got to take the Tacoma & Mavic Drone out for a little off-road drone operation during this video.
I took the Vanquish 540 to the San Bernardino National Forest area and ended up traversing over a mountain to finally arrive in Lytle Creek. During this trip, I got to use the detector in sand, hard and soft soil.
The second day, I took it to the beach. My biggest concern was the mineralization and amazingly not a problem with this detector!
This machine worked better than expected and I thoroughly enjoyed the ease of operation.
I currently have the following detectors:
Garrett AT Pro
Minelab Gold Monster 1000
Minelab Vanquish 540
and one more that I will list soon.
Please feel free to message me or comment if you have any questions.

It’s nice to see this from two years ago when you got the Vanquish.
Seems like so long ago...crazy
Over the past 40+ years I have had many metal detectors. About a year ago I purchased a Garrett ACE 400. I found it to be very unstable. A lot of false signals. I sold it and purchased a Vanquish 540. Wow! Very nice and very stable metal detector. Fun to use.
I get it...I feel like I betrayed my AT Pro...lol The Vanquish is so nice to use. I went on a shopping spree and also bought the Equinox 800 but it is not as easy to grab and go...The 540 is my favorite right now!
More fun Photography is as good as this Explanation about the detector
older vid, but I liked the drone footage and other shots of the desert hunt.
Thanks...we were so new at everything...it has been a great ride so far and have learned so much
I have the 540 also......It's a impressive unit for the $$....Great performer on the salt water beach....What I like about it is that you will be able to pay off quickly with the finds.....Minelab did a great job!
Carl F totally agree. Plus the light weight allows me to swing my arm longer. Lol
glad you got out there and had fun..that is the general idea with most of us..the fun..and sharing a great hobby with friends and family..btw..love the truck...
Thanks...was a blast and trying to turn it into a family thing....going out this weekend with Vanquish and Equinox 800...BTW, got the truck wet...been drying it. went thru a deep water crossing. You can find the video on my Natureszoom channel if you wanna see it...lol...Again, Thanks
2 years later… I just ordered it … using go find 66 until it arrives 😊
I think you will be happy with it... it is still Christine's favorite detector...
I've been using the Garrett AT Pro at the beach for ~10 years. It's set to PRO with customized preferences. Whenever I move from dry sand to wet sand, I recalibrate the Ground Balance, which can be done in a matter of seconds. This will avoid chatter and/or false signals. Works like a charm.
Thanks for the info.... I will have to give that a try with mine.
I’m a Jeep girl loved watching the Jeep crawl and the drone view was amazing!!
Sorry, I did not see this comment.... Thanks, love off roading. I have always wanted a jeep but went with the taco...maybe in the future.
Awesome !! I just ordered mine after doing so much research on a good starter detector that would work well in the wet sand. Cant wait to use it next week on my vacation in Cocoa Beach! Your video confirms I made the right choice!! Thanks!
So, how did the detector perform? You should make a video. Your very welcome!
It performed very well! I did find some coins . The surf was very rough Because of the swells coming in from the storms way out in the Atlantic. But it did well in the wet sand . Very easy to use. I can’t wait to take it to more populated beaches like Miami or Fort Lauderdale. Then I can detect in the ankle deep water on a calm day. I know people lose a lot of stuff down here on the beach!
@@patrickfanelli Glad it worked out. Yeah, keep at it. Also, work the line where everyone sits. May be some good potential for jewelry.
Very nice and enjoyable video! Love the drone cinematics and stable recording. You earned a subscriber. Much love from Switzerland!
Thank you very much
Great review bill. You guys have some awesome country down there in Southern Cal. So many cool places to metal detect. I love my Vanquish metal detector I don't go anywhere without it. It's pretty much my go-to detector now. Either that or my quest x10pro.
Danny, sorry for not responding sooner on this comment. We have been so crazy busy and I am finally taking the time to go thru some of our older videos.... The Vanquish is Christine's favorite and it has proven to be a reliable detector.
Great video and info on your new detector.
mountain biker Thanks. I’m going out today to try again to get a good find
Thank you for the good review on the 540. I’m in SoCal/OC as well and was particularly interested in how the 540 performs at the beach.
Liked and Subscribed. Good luck!
Thanks....I appreciate it.
Love this
Thank you very much
I'm happy to see that even out in the middle of freaking NOWHERE, you still got the requisite tent stakes. OMG. Hilarious. Great video. Love my Vanquish, too.
Tent stake treasures should be a thing. They are def a good machine!!!
That seems like a great detector for the price. Thanks
You are local. If you want to try it out, let me know.
Great detector. Looked like a fun day
For sure...always fun when out on an adventure
You have to manually ground balance the AT Pro to get it to work in wet sand.
Aw good to know. I will give it a try as soon as the beaches open! Thanks.
Nice review. I want one
Thank you. This detector is amazing for the price
Interesting on the Vanquish, I agree the 540 is awesome grab and go. I have never used the Equinox, but my first metal detector was a Whites Prizm IV. In comparison to the now lost Whites, the Vanquish is top notch great.
Good review and finds
thanks, loving this machine
Some great footage! Love SoCal! 🤙
Rob Madrigal Thanks. Now that I’m retired I wanted to move but it’s hard to leave!
Show seu aparelho excelente aquisição parabéns... Quero comprar um detector... Ainda estou na pesquisa pra ver qual comprar... São tantos detectores que não é fácil escolher... Todos em especial tem suas funções incríveis... Mas muita calma nesta hora... Tmj... Abração do AVENTUREIRO PAULEK!
Thank you... I agree, so many to pick from. Just do your research and make sure you get the one that fits your needs...
Good video. Too bad you didn't find any jewellery but maybe next time. I just bought this 540 but know nothing about how to set it up. Can you tell me what and how is the best setting? I don't want to be finding nails and bolts and can. Thanks.
The Vanquish is really simple to use. There is no ground balance. Just turn it on, pick a setting and adjust sensitivity for the depth you want and go. To choose a setting you just hit the magnifying glass on the right. We always just leave it on the ring symbol which is jewelry and then the top center button adjusted sensitivity. We use a lower setting for tot lots and we go as deep as we can without interference for beaches that’s really about it
@@DigginSoCal thank you. That helps a lot. 🙂
Hope you're diggin 12's too.. its a nickle or a 14k ring ;-) From experience. (same at the 'Nox) Nice machine !
So sorry for a late response.... I am trying to go back and catch up on old videos. We have learned from experience now that we dig every signal. I learned the hard way. We did skip a lot of signals in the beginning thinking they would be junk only to kick ourselves after finding gold and other cool stuff at numbers we did not dig when first starting out. Thanks for the great advice.
They make 3 models... the 540 depth ability.. is it any different than the 2 cheaper models?
There are differences...here is a link to minelab page that explains each one. It should help you understand detecthistory.com/reviews/minelab-vanquish-review/
Very cool video!
Thank you. You should get a detector
I metal detect under water with my at pro.AT stands for all terrain.
Yes. My first detector was the AT Pro. Still have it
Was wondering where you got the sand scoop
Sorry, I did not see this comment. If you have not purchased one yet, look at either Xtreme or CKG... both are good.
Hello I have a question is there a difference between a vanquish 540 and 400?
Not much. I think the two main differences are a back light and coil size. The 540 comes with a 12in coil and the 440 a 10in coil.
what beach are you on with the pier, is it newport beach
No, but I have one video at Newport...
what’s the brand of the pin pointer u use ?
It is the Minelab 35 and runs around $125
I just received my 540 pro today, when you push the all metal button it
goes into all metal push again and it goes back to disc, I'm confused
because when I hold down the disc button till the little nail appears on
screen I notice no difference in tone when I pass a nail over coil, the
grunt sounds the same, ( I notice I can leave the nail showing even
when the iron is disc out? very confusing) also I tried the volume
setting to see if I already have the upgrade and I don't think so as the
volume would not change. 0 One more thing that plug hole in the battery
compartment looks like no hole I've ever seen, it looks like I would
damage the electronics if I stuck something in there, what kind of plug
should I use, I have lots of cords from computers phones and drones but
nothing g like that. Thanks all, Sorry for the long rant!
That is a lot to digest...but to start...The discrimination button (horse shoe) puts it in "ALL" metals regardless of what mode you are in. It should turn on/off the right side of the top bar.
Holding down the button and displaying the nail turns the iron bias to low.
If your volume is not changing then that is a problem. It should adjust easily.
I have a usb cord for that plug but I am not sure the size. I can't remember if it came with it or it was from my equinox.
Here is a link to the manuel.
www.manualslib.com/manual/1674376/Minelab-Vanquish-540.html?page=3#manual
That grunt tone is an iron target which may be laying close to a higher tone non ferrous target like copper or silver
The hole inside the battery compartment is used to connect to the USB of your laptop to make software updates, not for recharging the battery.
Hey its glen when you giving away another metal detector
My 540 picks up quarter at 3 feet, buy one.
How can that machine work in the wet sand when it has preset ground balance?
Good question...Maybe Minelab can answer that best? I do find stuff in the wet sand....but typically the 800 is my goto in the surf and the 540 is my goto in the dry sand.
@@DigginSoCal They are smart people at Minelab. Probably the best in the business from what I can see. I been thinking about getting a 540, but I like a manual ground balance to adjust to different ground conditions. Right now that's all that's holding me back from getting one.
@@horseman528 I agree...the 540 is so simple to use and I grab it all the time. But when it is time to get seriously into difficult ground, adjustments can be the diff between finding and missing targets. I am looking at a couple units that are over a grand...yikes
is it balboa
Huntington Beach
Hi what camera are you using?
I am usually filming with my Hero8 GoPro. I have used my Iphone in 4K mode too because GoPro batteries don't last long.
what setting do u use in wet sand ?and dry sand same or different?
Brian, sorry for not getting back and checking out comments on my older videos.... I have learned over time that the Vanquish is not the best for surf/wet hunts. I just use the jewelry mode on the Vanquish and adjust the sensitivity. I rarely use it in the wet... Christine prefers to stay up on the towel line with it.
@@DigginSoCal thanks for the info
Looking at ur ealier vlogs!!
Rumor was vanquish going to put Garrett out of biz.. I do love minlab .. But vanqiush ..yes stable on any beach...all I've found on beach is can slaw an copper.... Been out many times..gave it a chance... To anyone e thinking of buying.. Put your money into a Garrett.. This is definitely light weight.. Complete stable on black sand or mineralized sand..but it's IDs and tone's need to be perfected buy user...I absolutely love minlab machines... This one is challenging....I thought Garret aces was nuts. But I could zone out an be one with ace find nice stuff.... Vanquish idk.. Scanned an 1800s yard with it. Had no clue .it beeped on everything.. Scanned same yard with beep dig tesoro cutlass 2.. Found a half shackle 45ad..... Don't thing these new ID machines are any better than they old beep digs.. Just my opinion.. Lol
I have mixed opinion. I love my Garrett and use it often. It has always been a solid unit for me. The Vanquish is also doing a good job. I did have a frustrating period where I was getting good tones and then not finding anything. After learning the machine better...the ONLY advantage is the ability to work the wet sand with the Vanquish. If Garrett updates the AT PRO with the ability to be used in wet sand, I would upgrade mine.
Interesting info. I have an AT Pro but it is acting strange. I think I will do a comparison of mine.
I bought the 540 over the garrett. I've watched SOOO many reviews on both machines, and every comparison I could find. The general consensus is that the Garrett works good, and the minelab works great. I've seen a bunch of people that have returned their Garrett's because of too much chatter and false detection. I've never found a video of anyone unhappy with their vanquish 540 let alone return one. Plus simultaneous multi-frequency 4-40 kilohertz is uncomparable at this price. Even the Garrett Apex only does 5-20 kilohertz. I've seen videos of people detecting coins down as far as 15" with the vanquish 540. Oh... It also has built-in Bluetooth! Honestly, there really is no comparison at its price point or even really twice its price. But, hey people will pick what they want and as long as they're having fun, that's really all that matters.

Hey my friend where's the manual ground balance if it doesn't have manual ground balance you wasted your money if you can't pump. Coil it's not worth $500 trust me
It does not have manual ground balance. But it does a good job overall. What I like about it is I can give it to my nephew and he has a blast. I’ve tested it and it finds everything my expensive equinox 800 finds. No complaint here re: no manual ground balance.
Music is extremely ANNOYING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
