The problem of this update (all brilliant puzzle composers will be ok, I composed more than 50) is that before, you can have quiet brilliant move : do a seemingly random/stupid quiet move in a position but it is brilliant. This was the beauty of brilliant.
There have been positions where I have sacrifised materials and the evaluation bar flipped my way from me completely losing to me completely winning. Still a best move. There is finally a change on how brilliant works.
@@Catofborealvalley Yeah, that should of been an brilliant. After seeing that I had I knew that getting a brilliant was almost impossible for me. So glad they have changed the system.
I got a "brilliant" move OTB yesterday. Blundered and got my rook forked so desperado sacrificed it for a piece losing the exchange. Brilliant seemed sarcastic because it was such a dumb mistake to start with!
Same, my only brilliant move to date is when they blundered and I forked their king and queen and their queen would be under attack without losing my own no matter how they responded to it. I am only a ≈600 player
Personally, I'm not a fan of the changes, Nelson. Although it is not incredibly rare to see a chess author/reviewer use an ! or !! to describe a move, the word "brilliancy" in chess is usually reserved for something incredibly special (i.e. not just an immediate tactical shot, but perhaps also a clever strategic/positional idea that may or may not involve a material sacrifice). I don't like the idea of not-so-brilliant moves being regarded as better than they actually are. For my tastes, "exclams" are for surprisingly powerful and situational moves like a Nh1! in a crazy endgame (when it's the only winning move and is insanely counter-intuitive). Also, in chess compositions, an exclam move is often part of the winning sequence.
the problem is it's hard for a computer to detect what is "counter-intuitive" for a human. Because it's a computer, and those counterintuitive moves to us are not counter-intuitive to the cpu. So sacrificing material is kind of a replacement for counterintuitive, since giving up material usually isn't good.
I think the brilliant move before is rewarded to the move that even the stockfish did not see, that is why it is too rare even for the master/GM level. I think it's a good thing that they changed it to a more human way and they become more generous to give it to lower/average rated player like me (that found the move that is relatively difficult to find for my level). I just got my first brilliant move today and it's a great feeling
@7:36, I was looking at 1)... Re1, 2)Rxe1 Qxd2+, 3)Kb2 Qxb2#. But now I see that 2)Qxd5 stops the mating threat and potentially only wins a Bishop. While "Tilting" is bad, Falling in Love with a sequence can be just as bad when you get blinded by your enthusiasm. I call this "Optimism Chess" (almost as bad as "Hope Chess").
I really enjoy your channel. You explain things in a calm, simple way, and I recommend you to friends. Keep at it, I really believe your channel is going to bigger all the time!
I got the first brilliant move!! Second one was so hard, I was considering taking with the Bishop to try mate with the rooks after sacrificing my queen but dosnt work Awesome video
The newer system is certainly an improvement. The problem with the previous system wasn't the rarity of brilliant moves, but how random they often were. I often couldn't figure out why my move was brilliant and in some cases they clearly weren't. The new system is a little lenient for my tastes, but since the average rating on the website is sub 1000 it's reasonable to make it lenient. For most players a sound sac is quite the accomplishment.
For anybody who isn’t a subscriber this is now available to free users, I can only speak for the UK. I quite like the new feature where the engine will show you the line to explain why a move is great, a blunder, a missed win etc. It was possible but slower before.
My first brilliant move was moving the rook leaving my queen attacked by a pawn. The truth was both the queen and the rook threatened a backrank checkmate...
Just had a game with 4 brilliant moves. On the first, I sacrificed my knight which would have opened a square for my bishop to pin his queen to the king. (He didn't take the sac) On the second, I sacrificed my bishop in order to open the 7th rank for my pawn to fork king and rook. (He didn't take the sac) The 3rd and 4th were essentially keeping the bishop at the same spot while suffocating him with the rest of my pieces.
Maybe now with the new update I can finally get a ‘brilliant move.’ I’m in the 1300’s and have never once received one. I guess that’s because my chess moves aren’t very brilliant. :D
It's weighted to the ELO level now For me because I'm 500, successfully pulling of simple tactics gets marked brilliant It's more about finding a move that's unexpectedly strong for your rating than about the actual strength of the move
I found another mate at 7:14 with Rook e1. If he takes Qxd2 is mate and if he doesnt take then Rxd1 he is forced to take back with the king and then Qxd2#
2:07 Qh5+ had to be played at some point, otherwise black could bring the queen forward and knight couldn’t block due to the bishop and according to my 600 brain if you don’t play that check at some point it could be M3
yooooo ive been trying to learn latvian for so long and seeing the position at 1:22 made me so happy lol. I've played into it a few times, but I haven't been able to find much info on how to actually go from there.
Congratulations! Awesome calculation! Great advice on piece development. Was wondering could you rotate the board to see it from black's side too. I use a turn table to rotate the chess board and check out the postition from both sides. It gives me a better understanding of the position.
@@jacencade4019 yea it's rare and the time I did get brilliant move I had absolutely no idea why did I get it first time I just moved my king on a random square in a pawn and king endgame and the other time I just checked with my bishop
I have a video idea for you, playing down in material (specifically sacrificing a piece for two pawns) some games the center is locked up with no pawn breaks and the only way to make any progress is to sacrifice, i have been experimenting with this and been able to hold positions or win because i get connected past pawns
Now is a human like move than an engine one. That's why you got more often now. It used to be a move that grants any kind of advantage waaaayyyy too deep in sequences. Extremely rare and that's why it looked "random" for us because probably no one can really determinate why it was a brilliant move before checking many many sequences deep with the engine analysis. I remember getting one at the opening and I was like wtf?? Why?? And checked with the engine. At the end it result I just got like a +0.80 (something like that) on any variant I was able to do with the analysis. Possibly the one or many reasons why it was a brilliant move were even deeper. But not reachable for me even with help of engine analysis board. So, yeah, it was a extremely rare thing to get. I got 3 in 2 years of playing. Some people not even once in more years.
This explains why I’m getting so many now. And in blitz where I’m not as good. This is fine but I like the old brilliant moves where you do something better than what the computer thought of. It’s more rare but feels so much better haha.
4:10 Why is it the best move to take there? it doesn't make sense to me, you are sacrificing a queen for only a rook, wouldn't that just be a losing exchange?
Once saw someone make a simultaneous Pin, fork and discovered check. It counted as a brilliant move. I was really confused because depth-wise this move wasnt that good and opponent had ways to retaliate easily. So yeah, no clue how CC determined what a brilliant move was before, but it sure as hell was easy to the point where any beginner could make brilliant moves with a bit of luck.
so thats why when i put my knight undefended into an attacked position, with a discovered attack on his queen, and the engine said it was the best move, it was brilliant
This seems alot more reasonable for a brilliant move all but 1 brilliant move of the 3 I made had the correct follow up and personaly I think it should only be brilliant if you found the follow up I think that will be alot more likely now
I sacrificed my queen a few weeks ago, but it just told me it was the "best move". My friend got a brilliant move, but when i replayed the game using the analyse board, it told me the brilliant move was yet again "best move".........

If you made a brilliant move you should be able to appreciate it as deliberate. That is the beauty of brilliant.
I would've just made them both brilliant moves, those random ones they previously had and the nice sacks
I would NOT mind another move titled "quiet brilliant" where its the old brilliant moves.
It’s unfair for it to HAVE to be a sacrifice. A lot of genius positional moves are left out
they should have extended the assessment not change it

Brilliant should be when you play a move and gain advantage according to the engine because the engine didnt go deep enough on first glance.
