Sub-Zero Carlisle
17 Jan 24
From 8am to 8pm at Carlisle. -5C when I arrived and -3C for much of the day.
Arcing on the pantographs, especially in the morning when frost was on the wires..
Severe Delays due to a points failure at Carstairs slowing southbound trains from Glasgow. Fortunately all cleared by 11am.
A class 37 from West Coast being started from cold after two days. Diesel smoke everywhere!
Cement train heading to Clitheroe.
Class 807 on test.
Class 43s on a test train.
Class 37s head to Kingmoor to collect a pair of independent snow ploughs, despite being up for sale.
Class 90s on an intermodal.

Well, the 37 engine idling up was cool, but one of your most classic shots for an electric was also in this video. Early on, that Avanti 390 winding in with the sun glinting off the sides as it undulated along and into the station was an epically cool shot. Nice one, Leslie.
Thank you Anthony!
You must be one of the most robust trainspotters around to be out with the camera in the negative temperatures Les!
Thanks! I do wrap up well but at times it does feel very cold!
Love it. Thats got to be the greatest ever 37 start up in history. And you got 37425 twice. Great stuff Leslie.
Thanks Tim. When I mentioned it to a driver his response was were there flames!
Activated the cloaking device too!
A 37 starting from cold. You just don't get that sort of drama and spectacle (or pollution thankfully!) from modern 2 stroke locos.
Very true. However I didnt expect quite the show we saw!
Nice video leslie very good camera work as usual I am really looking forward to seeing your next video I hope you get a nice video next time also when is your next video going to be on UA-cam bye for now Philip
Thank you so much!
Some great catches Les. Sad to hear about the coach rash fatality. How do these things happen?
Thanks Phil. Rookie coach driver apparently.
The pendolino departing northbound at the same time as the 156 Scotrail on the other platform cleared its exhausts confused me for a moment! 😮
Happens all the time - if its not a noisy unit being started its thos safety and security announcements as soon as I raise my camera. Thanks for watching
Movimentação de trem show boa tarde leslie
Thanks!
Nice to see a longer rake of Castle Cement wagons. Also it looks like the cold weather can give a class 37 an identity crisis! It almost thinks it is a steam engine!
Yes indeed! I was surprised at the cement train, especially as it's infrequent these days.
Fantastic video Les some great footage there matey loved the 37 startup that was real clag
(had to watch that twice 😂) also that pantograph arcing was awesome well captured les
thanks for turning out on a bitterly cold day but you did get the cats cream manny thanks
take care and stay safe a t b syd👍
Glad you enjoyed it
Fantastic video Les, hope you didn't get too cold out there all that time!
Not at all, I wear multiple layers, moan a lot and drink plenty of hot drinks!
Very atmospheric Les...lovely..
Glad you enjoyed it
brilliant video thank you
Glad you enjoyed it
another great video thanks a lot
My pleasure!
Awesome video as always buddy 👍 😊
Thanks 👍
Loved the 37 starting up Leslie - especially when it seemed to disappear in all that smoke. The arcing on the southbound Pendolino was facinating to see. Some good loco formation - two 90's and a 66 on the intermodal. Can see that being replicated on my layout ! Cheers Euan
Love to see you replicate the 37 start up lol. Quite a load with intermodal and a dead shed.
As the 08-05? Service to Euston departs the arcing on the overhead is easily seen.. I suppose fog or ice and water on the wire is causing nice fire works… if the overhead was cold so must have been you! Dedication I’d say 👍 fella
Both. There was a lot of arcing all day but difficult to capture once the sun was up.
Just been on £2 ride from leeds to Carlisle return. 4 pints in spoons.Day out on a tenner
Good value eh
@@LeslieGilpinRailways Northern everytime
That 37 really smoked Carlisle out big time can tell it was a cold cold start up not seen a site like that for a while thank you for sharing Les see you in February
Glad you enjoyed it
Watching this from New Zealand. Super video this one. Love the atmosphere of the trains emerging from the fog on a cold (English winter) morning. And of course, for a British railway enthusiast, there is much variety to be seen in these videos at Carlisle. Thank you, Leslie.
Thank you very much!
leslie what would i see tomorrow and what times are good
Bit late now but the S&C Circular reversed after a loco ran raound at Upperby. Then the snow ploughs and 37s returned from Crewe this evening. You should look on RealTime Trains for the oddities
can you send a link i cant find it@@LeslieGilpinRailways
The cold weather certainly brings out the best/worst of the railway.
Some beautiful effects but also some of the wrong things.
Sad about the crash and person who died. All in my thoughts and prayers 🙏🕯️
It was sad
Wonderful clag and a tasty sandwich, among all the other goodities!
Thanks for watching!
anything good tomorrow or today?
The 37s return with the snowploughs to Carlisle today at 18;30
Except they were early! Got to Citadel in good time assuming they would be
@@LeslieGilpinRailways Well I went to Lancaster to see it in daylight and luckily still managed to overtake them at Penrith because they stopped to let my train and the one after it Infront so I saw them at Carlisle aswell!
Amazing got them today at Crewe
Yes I saw and back at Carlisle for a future video
That coach accident must of been bad Looks like it was going at some speed to cause damage like that. Cold 37 driver taking photos don't we love these old locomotives :)
I hadnt realised just how bad the damage was until I went to look up close. No wonder it'll be a big repair job.
Excellent as ever Les
Thanks!
The west coast 37676 plough train up in thurso on Friday
Excellent I wondered how far north they would go
