When it comes to thermal shocking your polymer clay, I move polymer clay straight from the oven to a bowl of ice water, it hardens the polymer clay even more and brings out translucence better. I have never gotten any cracks or anything and the creations never seem to break! You can look it up on videos, I know some users have reviews on the technique. :3
So happy that it helped you! And thank you for asking me, if I could make such a video! I would have never thought about that. But I think it can help some people that are new to polymer clay. Oh, and also, I wouldn't use random cheap polymer clay. X_X I once bought something and it stank SO horrible. I never ever used it again....
Thank you so much! I'm glad you like my videos! You basically just need some glaze that works with polymer clay and a brush, if the glaze doesn't come with a brush. And then you just glaze it like you would paint it on and let it dry. :)
I use fimo soft and it is really to let behind finger prints. What helps is to use gloves so you don't have any fingerprints or you can use harder clay like fimo classic. It is harder to work with, but you leave less fingerprints behind. But I also try to smooth everything out and/or blur everything! And yes, you can use chalk pastels for painting as well, if you want to make like cookies a bit more realistic. But you would usually use acrylic paint for the colouration!
An excellent instructional video (I've never baked FIMO, or any other type of polymer clay before, and was feeling quite anxious) - thank you for uploading!
The difference is that fimo effect has different effects like it can get a little bit translucent or has nice glitter in it or it can glow in the dark. Fimo light and basic are almost the same. They harden on the air and there are only 2 different colours I think. The main difference is that fimo light is for objects where weight is an issue. Fimo classic and soft are almost the same. Fimo classic is harder to knead and soft is much softer. I use Fimo soft because it is the easiest to use! :)
I would choose the lowest temperature that you can find on the package and bake it at the average time. Or maybe the longest time. Let's say the one clay says 20 mins, the other one 30. So I would bake it 30 min, because 10 mins more wouldn't damage the other clay. Because it is more important at what temperature you are baking than the time. :)
I would bake it at the recommended temperature and just wait about 30 min. If it has not harden enough, I would just bake it longer. The important thing is to don't bake it at a higher temperature. So it is okay if you bake it 30 min or longer, even if you have a part that is only 3 mm thick, because the time is just the minimum. So as long as you keep the temperature, you can bake it longer!
This video will be very helpful for me bc i just got a 30 pack of clay for xmas and it is my first time using clay. Thx so much this will truly help me alot!!!!!
Yes. :) Check out the package of your clay first. They usually say it is save. But I wouldn't use random cheap clay because it took ages for me to get rid of the smell. T_T
Polyvinylchloride (PVC) is extremely toxic and I would not bake in any oven used for food (even much later) as leaves a coating/film on the oven which then can send off fumes that will get into food.
You can buy glaze for polymer clay and then you can glaze your creation after you have baked it. Just like you would paint on it or how you would apply nail polish! :)
do you have to bake it? my mom wont let me near the oven. -_- (Edit: thanks guys for the answers but I made this five years ago when I was 11 Lmao, and well, I have my own toaster oven now)
Just bake for 10 mins first at 275 or 250 f and increase by 5 until its fully hardened and let it cool down in between because when its warm it will be a little softer than when its cold
ashleyy cxrr so do you know what would happen if the clay isnt bakeable? because im in the same boat but im not sure if its even bakeable. i know this was 2 years ago but if you are still on youtube and get this it would help.
You can use any oven where you can adjust the right temperature! If you use different kind of brands, I would try baking it at the average temperature and time. So it is not too hot and not too cold for the clay!
Usually the colour turns a little bit darker and the clay looks dull/matt. But you just have to stick with the instructions! And you glaze it after you baked the clay. :)
No, most of the polymer clays are meant to be baked in the oven. But Fimo has a clay that is for the microwave. It is stated on the package. But usually you can't use microwave for polymer clay.
I used the exact method that you said and it came out amazing thanks so much! It was the first time I have ever done that so it was a really big accomplishment for me!
No, you can only use microwave for specific clay like fimo microwave air! So please only use an oven or a small oven where you can adjust the temperature and the time!
This is very helpful! The only question I have is what if the chemicals come off the clay and stick to the inside of the oven. Couldn't that effect your food? Can that happen and how?
AGStyleStars The clay is non-toxic but you still shouldn't bake the clay with food at the same time! So as long as you don't do that, you can use the oven for food as well! Also I would recommend leaving the oven open when you put the creation out. Just in case!
I would bake it at the lowest temperature you can find on the package and bake it the average baking time. But I would suggest 30 mins as well. Let it cool down and if it is still too soft, put it in the oven and bake it a little bit (5 mins) and let it cool down again!
Hi, I'm having a hard time deciding the length of time. It's my first time and I don't want to mess up my project. The packaging (Premo) says 30 degrees celsius per 6 mm, but what do I do with the project is more 3D? The dimensions are about 40 mm x 18 x 28 (L x H x W). Should I go with the 40mm (= 3.5 hours, which seems extreme for something that looks so small). OR do I calculate the cubic measurements? Sorry for the long questions but would really like some help please! :(
julieee I'm not sure if you solved your problem yet but I'll answer anyway. I would certainly bake it longer than the 30 minutes but probably not as long as 3 hours. Just as something to note, I've heard many people get better results if they bake their creations for longer than the recommended time, and I'm sure you can bake your creation for hours as long as it doesn't exceed the recommended baking temperature. The moment your temperature reaches or exceeded the burning temperature, (which is usually 350° F), that's when you should start worrying. But if you are using light colors, you might get some discoloration or slight browning the longer you keep your clay in the oven. TL:DR - As long as you don't have to use the oven to cook something within the time frame of you baking your creation and as long as you don't reach the burning temperature, your creation should be fine to bake for a few hours. Q
julieee But also note that your clay (Premo) might have a lower burning temperature than 350° F, be extra careful and check. Burning the clay won't release any toxic fumes but it will release very foul smell.
I'm new to this and have been practicing with modelling clay, today I finally bought some polymer clay from Michaels ,do you have to bake them right away or can you leave them overnight and cook them the next day? (Too late to use the oven lol)
Brittany Truman you'd have to give the oven time for the fumes to escape completely. So if you need the oven to make food that day do not use it to bake clay. Also never bake clay onto a baking sheet you are going to use for food. Keep the trays for food separate from the ones you use for clay.
If you're not doing too many items at a time anyway, why not use a designated toaster over for polymer clay ONLY for clay....I don't think it's worth the risk
Oh, I don't know, I'm sorry. I live in Germany and we have just Fimo. And it costs around 3.50 dollar for a small package, so I think it is a good price. Maybe you can look on the internet, if there are cheaper prices as well. Because sometimes I find even Fimo a lot of cheaper there!
Thank you for making this, the first time I baked my clay, I smelt this awkward smell from the clay and it started to give me a headache, but, now that I know that I should keep air circulating, I feel safer. c: Thank you!
No, there are different types of polymer clays that you can bake. It was just an example. There are brands like sculpey, premo.. Just make sure the label says that you can actually bake it! Or that you are supposed to bake it!
Oh, I don't think you have to bake it that long. x_x I saw people using this type of clay and they just bake it like you would bake Fimo. Just 30 mins. I would suggest baking it at the recommended time for 30 min and let it cool down. If it hasn't harden enough, I would bake it for 15 more mins and check it out later. But I didn't use this type of clay, so it is just my thought. I hope it works!
You just need some glaze for polymer clay or you can just use a nail polish topcoat and glaze it like you would paint your nails or usually paint all over the surface that you want to be glazed. :)
Yeah, I find Fimo expensive here as well, therefore I buy it on ebay. Some shops sell a block for 1,50 € and usually you pay 2,50 € in a craft store. Which clay do you normally use? I also wanted to try the Fimo air because you get SO much clay and much cheaper...
How do you glaze afterwards? Do you need special materials? (I love your videos! I discovered them today and just couldn't stop watching! I hope you will upload more soon!!^^
Thanks for the pointers. I baked some polymer clay for the first time in a few years without having the recommended baking temps... let's just say things got a little crispy at the tips lol.

Came here trying to rekindle my childhood clay obsession only to find that Mako also does polymer? Only knew you through watercolor lol
WAIT SAME
By any chance do you know when your clay is done baking?
So happy that it helped you! And thank you for asking me, if I could make such a video! I would have never thought about that. But I think it can help some people that are new to polymer clay. Oh, and also, I wouldn't use random cheap polymer clay. X_X I once bought something and it stank SO horrible. I never ever used it again....
Aww that makes me happy to hear! Making things out of clay is fun!
It was just a basic video about how to bake polymer clay. I could make another one about polymer clay as well. :) Any ideas?
Thank you so much! I'm glad you like my videos!
You basically just need some glaze that works with polymer clay and a brush, if the glaze doesn't come with a brush. And then you just glaze it like you would paint it on and let it dry. :)
my clay was smoking

Can we use microwave oven as well?
Please reply
You can use air drying clay instead, so you won't need an oven! :)
hi, i was wonderiing if its bad for your oven because after baking the clay, there will be fumes and i dont want the fumes to make my food toxic
Can I use aluminum foil??
I love how simple and helpful this guide is!
Short, sweet, and straight to the point!!! Thank you.
Exactly what i was searching ! Clear, cute and short 😍✨ Cheers !
I watched a 14 min video that told me nothing and you managed to give me all the info I needed in 2 minutes....THANK YOU
An excellent instructional video (I've never baked FIMO, or any other type of polymer clay before, and was feeling quite anxious) - thank you for uploading!
i have seen a lot of videos for polymer clay but you are the first person that made me understand it all!!!!!!!!!

You can glaze the baked clay whenever you like. :)
Yes. :) Check out the package of your clay first. They usually say it is save. But I wouldn't use random cheap clay because it took ages for me to get rid of the smell. T_T

do you have to bake it? my mom wont let me near the oven. -_-
(Edit: thanks guys for the answers but I made this five years ago when I was 11 Lmao, and well, I have my own toaster oven now)
Ha yes it needs to bake
Either ask your mum to put them in the oven for you, or buy air dry clay (you don't need to bake it) ^-^
dolly productions buy a microwave oven or even use an easy bake so that will bake it with it not burning as easy
dolly productions If you want it very soft then no, you don't have to bake it. But If you want it hardened, then yes.
thanks for all of your help! but I sored a toaster oven for 5 bucks and my mom allows me to use it!
My polymer clay didn't come with baking instructions!
MrmappyINOF™ try to bake it for 10 mins increase slowly and carefully watch it until it is cured
Just bake for 10 mins first at 275 or 250 f and increase by 5 until its fully hardened and let it cool down in between because when its warm it will be a little softer than when its cold
ashleyy cxrr so do you know what would happen if the clay isnt bakeable? because im in the same boat but im not sure if its even bakeable.
i know this was 2 years ago but if you are still on youtube and get this it would help.
btw i tried baking it, and it melted very fast. it started it at 275 so maybe its more like 250?
GAMING : SENSEI :][ you'll end up with clay soup
You can use any oven where you can adjust the right temperature! If you use different kind of brands, I would try baking it at the average temperature and time. So it is not too hot and not too cold for the clay!

Yes, I have. :) But I am not selling polymer clay things right now. You can visit my shop here: etsy.com/shop/makoccino
Yes. :) But if you bake a lot of polymer clay and regularly, maybe you want to get a small oven just for your clay.
No, most of the polymer clays are meant to be baked in the oven. But Fimo has a clay that is for the microwave. It is stated on the package. But usually you can't use microwave for polymer clay.
Ohh, that is a good idea! I actually had a necklace like that!
I used the exact method that you said and it came out amazing thanks so much! It was the first time I have ever done that so it was a really big accomplishment for me!
You don't have to glaze it, if you like it the way it is!
Thanks for alerting not to bake it along with food! I was literally going to do that!
your accent is so cool LOVE it
This was so good and informative for newbies like me!
I knew you would start with a heart! :D
Jasmine Lai Haha, how did you know that!
It's most common... .3.
You are very welcome!
I was searching for polymer clay tutorials, and then I was like, "wait this name looks familiar"! Hehehe.
Lin's Teahouse: DIY ♥ Nails ♥ Life Haha! :D
Thank you for the great tips. I will be working with my first polymer clay projects soon and this is good to know. ❤️
Mako, I want to thank you for posting the video :D I have 2 questions. How long do you preheat the oven? And what is the temperature when you preheat?
Thank you so much! It’s my first time doing this because I have a project so I decided do something like this. 😊
I always use baking paper when I bake my charms!
I would use foil and make something like a holder to support the clay on standing. :)
Ohh, yeah, it is important to cool them down slowely. :)
No, you can only use microwave for specific clay like fimo microwave air! So please only use an oven or a small oven where you can adjust the temperature and the time!

makoccino thank you for the help! I really appreciate it :-) I'm new to this polymer clay thing so I'm just starting to learn ;-)
AGStyleStars :

Usually I just bake it for like 4 minutes and 30 seconds
Yes, sure! :) I will note that!

Can I use a toaster oven instead? I usually make smaller charms and don't feel like wasting so much electricity by using the big oven. :|
yes i use a toaster oven my mom let’s me use it
your videos have such a happy feeling :3
I'm new to this and have been practicing with modelling clay, today I finally bought some polymer clay from Michaels ,do you have to bake them right away or can you leave them overnight and cook them the next day? (Too late to use the oven lol)
Yes! You can leave it overnight and bake them! Just put it somewhere where it doesn't get dirty or dusty!
This was SOOOOO helpful. I did not know how to bake it until now.
Toaster ovens burn everything iv tired
So glad it helped!
is it really safe to use my toaster oven I make food out of?
Brittany Truman you'd have to give the oven time for the fumes to escape completely. So if you need the oven to make food that day do not use it to bake clay. Also never bake clay onto a baking sheet you are going to use for food. Keep the trays for food separate from the ones you use for clay.
Notice Me Genki THANK YOU! this is what I did and I made a pretty cool looking dragon! ^^v
Cuddles The Hamster yes, just crack it open.
dee deedee army?
If you're not doing too many items at a time anyway, why not use a designated toaster over for polymer clay ONLY for clay....I don't think it's worth the risk
Yes!
You say "oven" in a very dutch way. Are you dutch?
German :) I didn't realise I said it incorrectly XD
You didnt say it incorrectly but just in a very dutch way so i thought you were dutch.
maybe you are supposed to use a 'Dutch oven'...
It is uh-ven just to help😊
yep!
will play dough work?
+josie ponce No, it has to be a oven-bake clay!
Where can you get polymer clay? And by the way please subscribe to my channel
Ok
Marelyn DLG I always buy it at daiso
Marelyn DLG nope
If you can adjust the temperature and the time!
So cool! Have fun with your new channel and have fun creating! ^_^
No! I would just let it open to cool down. But you don't need to do anything to the oven after baking charms. :)
I didn't know you have a polymer clay tutorial!!!! :D :D You are awesome!
Very self explanatory!! I will definitely use this video
Oh, I don't know, I'm sorry. I live in Germany and we have just Fimo. And it costs around 3.50 dollar for a small package, so I think it is a good price. Maybe you can look on the internet, if there are cheaper prices as well. Because sometimes I find even Fimo a lot of cheaper there!
yes, you can. But if you bake a lot of polymer clay and regularly, maybe you want to get a small oven just for your clay. :)
You could try to make cold porcelain instead. I haven't tried it yet, but I saw awesome creations with it! Just search for cold porcelain tutorial :)
If you can adjust the temperature and time, then it is fine!
OMG thank you so much!!! :) you helped alot! And you just got a new subscriber because of it
getting started and what u need and baking in it as well and some things to think about and all beginner stuff plz
I am glad I could help!
Thank you for making this, the first time I baked my clay, I smelt this awkward smell from the clay and it started to give me a headache, but, now that I know that I should keep air circulating, I feel safer. c: Thank you!

excelent video. i threw the box my clay came in away like a total noob! so i have to test to see how long my clay needs. ;)
cheers

I'm so glad it helped you! ^__^ I just wanted to make a basic video so everyone that is new to polymer clay know what is going on... XDD
Thanks for the video, I've made my girlfriend a present out of polymer clay and this video is just what I needed 💯😉👊
You can insert the pin when you are finished molding your charm, then you can put it inside and bake it!
You just need some glaze for polymer clay or you can just use a nail polish topcoat and glaze it like you would paint your nails or usually paint all over the surface that you want to be glazed. :)
Have fun! ^_^
Thank you! So glad it could help you!
Do you use some water in the microwave? Because most of the clays are not meant for microwaving because of their consistence...
It is usually stated on the package!
Yeah, there are polymer clays that you can let dry on the air, like Fimo air. :)
Yes, you can :)
Sure, I just had Fimo soft. But you can use other brands of polymer clay of course!
How do I know when it is done? Like will the clay have a small gloss to it? And do I add glaze before I bake it or after? Awesome tutorial :D
This is great! I'm glad!
That is awesome!
