What a wonderful introduction to using polymer clay. I am so pleased to have found it not long into my actual attempts as using the products rather than just looking at them and longing to try. I do have two related questions about baking that I didn't see covered. 1. Once the clay has baked for the recommended time: do you leave it in the oven to cool down with the heat turned off or do you remove it to a protected area outside the oven? 2. I will be using a small oven appliance to bake my items. When the door is opened even for a very short time, the temperature drops dramatically. Is it better to put items into the oven when it is turned on, then start the timing once the temperature is set, or open the door of the hot unit and wait to set the time once the correct temperature is set? Again, leave it in the turned off unit or remove the items, still on their baking surfaces, once the time has elapsed? Thank you again; I am now moving on to your other tutorials with absolute confidence that they will be as well prepared and shown as has this one. Joyce
Thank you, I'm glad you liked the video! I just leave my baked clay on top of my oven to cool after baking. But it won't hurt the clay to leave it to cool in the oven, it'll just take longer to cool. For point 2, I think either would work honestly; I leave it until the oven is up to temperature :)
thanks so much! thoroughly enjoyed this video and took lots of notes. I just bought a bunch of stuff for my daughter to make clay art. Looks like i need to grab a tile, a roller, and liquid clay next. ❤
I’ve just recently begun working with polymer clay and was getting a bit frustrated with how hard the clay was. I did return the Fimo Effects and exchanged it for Fimo Soft which made a big difference! I also purchased a small bottle of clay softener and that really helped me out! I’m curious about the use of translucent clay. I bought a large block of that and found that I could use a ratio of approximately 1:4 of color to translucent and it seems like a great way to make the small block of colored clay last longer! Anyway, I’m a new subscriber and wanted to thank you for all of your tips and tricks!! 💜
I have had the edges of my clay turn brown while cooking at the right temp for the minimum bake time on more than one occasion. This and the fact that dust seemed to be attracted to my clay no matter how much I cleaned made me give up on trying polymer clay again. Although, I have a few gifts that I need to make that includes things made from this stuff so I need to try it again. This time I am not going to use white and I am going to try that tent idea you suggested. Thank you for the in-depth tutorial.
This is just the video I was looking for, thank you so much!! I'm so excited to begin sculpting, and youtube has been a great teacher. I appreciate the length too, it leaves no gaps of knowledge and makes the process less daunting. I love your tutorials, I'm a new subscriber!😊

Have been working with clay for 3months and really needed to see your tutorial before I started !! Have watched 100’s of tunes ( see even learned this abbreviation) Have yet to make a piece professionally finished. I need to have more patience with the sanding, ugh, but see the need to do so.
I am listening to your video and while listening I was scrolling through all the comments. I didn't see any questions about why so many crafters say not to use sculpy III. I was in Hobby Lobby and that was basically all they had. Another question I can't find an answer to is when you are new to clay how much do you cut off a new block when you are going to try making something like earings.
Hi! I haven't used SculpeyIII myself, but it seems like it's a soft clay that is a bit brittle after baking, according to what I've seen. This will make it easy to work with, but not great for anything too thin or anything with sculpted details for instance. To know how much clay to cut off a block, you really just have to guess. I would condition a bit more that you think you'll need, as you can always store that excess clay and use it for a future project. Thanks for watching :)
Excellent thanks. I've just got into polymer clay making little models. The one thing I wanted to know was how many times I can add bit's after baking. This was very informative. One thing I do want to know is, what sort of paint is best to use on polymer clay? I'm using sculpey oven bake clay. I haven't used it yet and the models I want to make have quite a bit of detail work. Like hands, feet, eyebrows and facial expressions.. I'm basically testing it first but I'm wanting to paint them afterwards. Great information from this video. 😊
Sorry for the late reply! If you're going to repeatedly bake the clay, you can part-bake each time, and then fully bake the last time. You just have to be careful baking it too much if it's a light colour/white because it's possible so much baking could slightly discolour it. Shouldn't be an issue though. I believe you can also part-bake clay with a heat gun to do it quicker as you add details, but you'll still need to fully cure it in the oven at the end :)
Thank you so much for taking the time to make this very informative video. I am brand new to using clay and this video helped me enormously. Thank you :)
Thank you so, so much for such a comprehensive and thorough video, this is probably the most helpful video I’ve ever seen for any topic ever in the crafting sphere!
Oh my God 😅 I love your video on beginner clay it's like a class of its own .. teaching me how to use different Clay's and I was looking for this for a long time.. ty ty I hope u have a second part..
Thank you so much for this most informative and precise video covering everything about Polymer clay!!! I have a query related to baking, you mentioned that dont bake food alingwith the clay project, however after i finish the Polymer clay baking.. should i clean the oven for the fumes residue for future food baking? Also what are your thoughts on using oven safe bags ( used fot turkey baking eg - Reynolds)? How would that work? Thanks in advance🙏
Thank you :D I imagine oven safe bags would work, but I haven't tried them so can't say for sure. I don't clean my oven after use; I just leave the door open for a bit to air it out. The main thing is not to use any baking trays etc for both clay and food - no contact should be between those 2 things. Some people who bake clay a lot get a separate desktop mini oven (just for clay), so that's an option too!
Thank you thank you for this video!!!! I'm a beginner to this craft and I've been making keyrings. I'm so glad for the way you made this video with the different clay types, and everything else.
As others have commented, I too find your video to be full of the much needed advice for what how and everything else so that now I understand and have learnt much more so I am not as intimated, but now looking forward to working with the clay...Thank you so much for sharing, it is much appreciated ❤️❤️❤️🥰🥰🥰😍
One thing i do to soften clay is put into microwave for about 3-5 seconds depending on the thickness you're working with. It can cook some areas if clay is thick and heated for longer than 5 seconds, heat for 3 seconds to start with a piece at a time and if i want a little softer i heat 2 seconds at a time until it's soft enough.
Any brand of polymer clay should be good - Fimo or Premo as examples. With thin items like gift tags and bookmarks, you just want a clay that won't end up brittle. Air dry clay would therefore be no good. Also make sure you don't bake for longer than the instructions say, as you want that little bit of flexibilty to remain.
This maybe a silly question but when baking your clay do you use a fan oven? Of all the tutorials I have watched no one has ever mentioned this. I think your video tutorial is amazing x
Thank you :D I personally use a fan oven, but that's just because that's what I own already. I don't think it's necessary, but perhaps it makes the clay less likely to burn? Just make sure you do a test piece first in the oven you have to see how it goes.
This is very helpful! I've been wanting to get into polymer clay sculpting for a while and I might even start a small business with it if I really enjoy it! Thank you so much!
This video was extremely helpful! Thanks! Another thing that is worth mentioning to beginners is make sure you to avoid the clay: 'sculpey III'. It cracks after baking every time I've tried it. A waste of time and money!
thank you so much, I had last worked with fimo 30 years ago and it seems my gran did teh conditioning for me, so I was so puzzled when the clays were so crumbly and I had feared that my clay was "dried out" or too old or something... this video gave me all the information I need to get back into it (next project again, making "gargoyles" for my electric intallation point plastic covers)
Do you recommend conditioning a whole pack of clay? Or just conditioning the clay you need in smaller chunks? Thank you for a very informative video ☺️💙
I would recommend just conditioning what you need (in smaller chunks) as you need it. If you condition clay but then don't use it, it will cool and need conditioning again anyway before use.
Great, detailed video! Was Premo an independent brand when this video was made? Premo isn't a brand; it's a Sculpey line (at least now in 2020). I can't wait to try Cernit once I'm more experienced, but for now I'm sticking to Sculpey Premo and Sculpey Souffle.
Hi! Yes you're correct, Premo is part of Sculpey, but when people say 'sculpey clay' they aren't referring to Premo so I treat Sculpey & Premo as different things...otherwise I think it can get more confusing!
I don’t see any other Poly Clay videos u have done; are they under another name? This was a very informative interesting video. I’d like to see your work.
Thanks! I've only done a few clay videos because my channel is mostly focussed on other crafts like knitting, and I don't sell me work so there aren't photos for you to see either, sorry :( I hope to do more clay videos in the future though.
Great video thank you! While your conditioning it how do you make sure no dust or fluff gets on it? I swear my house is just filled with dust and fluff in the air, cant seem to keep it off my clay for 5 seconds 😂
Ha! All you can do is make sure everything is cleaned just before you use it. If your clay is going to sit out at all, instead maybe put it in a clean container like a glass jar, or put some clingfilm over it to try and protect it :)
It’s not often I watch a long video through but I did with yours and it’s been so informative so thank you for this. I’m a new resin jewellery maker and polymer clay is just screaming at me to play with it 😂. I find that beginner videos which Iv attempted to watch in the past are not helpful but this one was full of so much information which hasn’t confused my little brain. Iv just had to subscribe to you 🥰 xxx
150 C? Technically you could (with aluminium foil over the top to prevent burning) but I'd be concerned about heating the polymer clay too much and it giving off unhealthy fumes. You don't really want to be overheating polymer clay as it is essentially a plastic, sorry!
Thank you so much for a very informative Video and clear instructions for a beginner. I definitely save it to watch and learn step by step. I am passionate with this but don’t know how to start until I found your video . 🥰❤️

Might be an old vid, but it worked for me. Thanks.
Good to hear! :D
Excellent! I'm glad it was helpful :D
This video was extremely helpful! Thanks! Another thing that is worth mentioning to beginners is make sure you to avoid the clay: 'sculpey III'. It cracks after baking every time I've tried it. A waste of time and money!
Thanks for the tip! I've not tried that clay.
Excellent video. Thank you so much!
You're very welcome!
Great info. I learned so much
thank you so much, I had last worked with fimo 30 years ago and it seems my gran did teh conditioning for me, so I was so puzzled when the clays were so crumbly and I had feared that my clay was "dried out" or too old or something... this video gave me all the information I need to get back into it (next project again, making "gargoyles" for my electric intallation point plastic covers)
Your gargoyle project sounds awesome :D Happy crafting!
Good video, clear and concise!
Thank you!
I wish you would have shown video demonstrating using the past machine
Awesome so much precise straight to the point soft and clear with no background music just perfect and extremely useful
So glad you liked it :) Thanks for watching!
Great Video! Have ordered my clay and tools! Can’t wait to start creating !
Yay! Happy crafting :)
Thank you for this easy to follow and understand informative video.
You are welcome! Thanks for watching :)
Brilliant video - thanks!
Glad you liked it!
@@RokoleeDIY Thank you so much for your reply!☺️
Great, detailed video! Was Premo an independent brand when this video was made? Premo isn't a brand; it's a Sculpey line (at least now in 2020). I can't wait to try Cernit once I'm more experienced, but for now I'm sticking to Sculpey Premo and Sculpey Souffle.
Hi! Yes you're correct, Premo is part of Sculpey, but when people say 'sculpey clay' they aren't referring to Premo so I treat Sculpey & Premo as different things...otherwise I think it can get more confusing!
@@RokoleeDIY Interesting. When I hear Sculpey, I assume they're talking about Premo or Soufflé. I think what you said is more confusing. 😅
Thank you so much for this very helpful video!
You are so welcome!
Thank you so much!! This was so helpful! 😊👏
You're so welcome!
Just getting into this. Great video. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for this detailed and informative video. Much appreciated.
My pleasure! Thanks for watching :)

Great video! Thanks for all the detail and images. It helped me make sense of everything 😊👍
You're very welcome! Glad it helped :D
This is a great guide, very informative. Thank you so much for creating it.
Thank you :D Glad you like it
Very thorough and easy to follow. Would like to print out your charts. Thank you for your help.
I'm glad it was helpful :) Thanks for watching!
Aww thanks very much :D i'm glad you found it useful. Happy resin-and-clay crafting!
Best tutorial on youtube . Thanks a lot
Aw thanks very much!
this video is really helpful, thanks.. wanted to ask that the lowest temperature in my oven is 150 so can i bake it in 150
150 C? Technically you could (with aluminium foil over the top to prevent burning) but I'd be concerned about heating the polymer clay too much and it giving off unhealthy fumes. You don't really want to be overheating polymer clay as it is essentially a plastic, sorry!
Thank you! Really good information in a lay persons language
Glad you enjoyed it! :D
This is brilliant. Thank you 🤗
Glad it was helpful! :D
Super thanks and you didn’t say but if people like this it will help others find it
Thank you :)
Thank you so much for a very informative Video and clear instructions for a beginner. I definitely save it to watch and learn step by step. I am passionate with this but don’t know how to start until I found your video . 🥰❤️
You are so welcome! I'm glad it was helpful :)
