It was so Gratifing to get to the passage where Jagged, Tahiry, and Ashik evacuate a dying star destroyer using 3 of the remaining TIE defenders... the thing was perfectly workable 45 years after the battle of Yavin. (I assume they gradualy got better reactors guns and shields though)

Well, the obvious problem, is, that TIE Fighters are named TIE Fighters, because they have Twin Ion Engines.
Each Engine has a Solar (Ion Collector) Panel attached to its Engine.
In Fact, this actually works out for the TIE Bombers as well, for the exact same reasons !
      Hmmm, ... ... ...
      Well, How About That !
Anywyay, this TIE Defender has 3 Columns (arms, legs, however one wishes to go with it !), each with 2 Solar Panels (Ion Collectors) attached.
So, that, of course would add up to, at the very least, 3 Ion Engines with 2 Panels per Engine, or, 6 Engines with 1 Panel Per Engine.
Now, I am not sure what particular Mathematics are being used here, but 2 of anything has always (Historically speaking, that is !) had a multitude of differing names, as in bi (bi-cycle), di (di-sect), duo (The Dynamic Duo), pair, (a Nice Pair), and Twin (Twin Ion Engine), just to name some !
So, as I was saying, I do not recall Twin ever being referred to as 3 of anything, much less 6 of anything !
Of course, I am only using True, Basic Mathematics here to Best Describe the use of the Terminology for the word, Twin.
Either way, the Nomenclature of TIE (Twin Ion Engine) is no longer applicable for the Defender.
      But, Hey !
      It's Disneys Scar Warts !
Who knows what math they use !
      Who REALLY Cares ?!?
After all, Disnesy Scar Warts are just Fiction, afterall !
Including anything that might even REMOTELY attempt any Relation with the True Star Wars !
Well, it certainly isn't Real Math !
By the way, I really LOVED Rebels !
      I can't explain it.
      I Just Do !

    • @HotWheels_OW
      @HotWheels_OW 4 роки тому +9

@@xSuperiorManx The ends justify the means; while there are many methods you can produce a starfighter it needs to be able to adapt to a plethora of roles in combat, this is especially important for strategists so that they can pickup and exploit vulnerabilities in the opposing fleet.
From what I gather, TIE Defenders are expensive, but they are an investment that produces results in a multitude of situations let alone the improvement of survive-ability odds for veteran pilots. Whereas a project such as the Death Star is great at putting the galaxy in line (in theory) it can only effectively put down one insurrection at a time, if you have the equivalent in funding for that project in multi-purpose fighter craft you can put down multiple insurrections/rebellions effectively.
Given that the rebellion relied heavily on smuggling and piracy for both funds and supplies having a dozen of these buzzing around each major system with a lightning fast response time would no doubt have a major impact in the war effort even without considering their performance on the battlefield.

The empire treated its volunteer pilots like conscripts. "We don't trust you to bail on us the moment you think we aren't looking. So you will fly this deathtrap that can't go anywhere without a mothership."
This isn't even the 'we didn't need anything better than a TIE Fighter because nobody was stronger than a police force' excuse. The imperial leaders knew quite clearly how ugly the galaxy was, and how well equipped rogue elements really were. The Tarkin Doctrine was just as much about ruling your own forces through fear as it was invoking fear in the people. A powerful propaganda machine might have gotten bright-eyed cadets into the fighter academies, but fear of stepping out of line kept them serving.
At the same time, being a TIE pilot served as both a skill and loyalty test. Flying the suicide coffin that was a TIE into a battle would serve to clear out people who didn't adapt ASAP, and also prove pilot loyalty if they lived long enough to get into a TIE Interceptor.
      It's insidious.

Irl equivalent of Tie Fighters would be infamous Japanese Zeroes from WW2 - where design assumed, to quote in here - "performance is all protection they need". And for a good chunk of War it was considered best fighter plane by all sides concerned. Unfortunatelly for Japanese pilots tho, not only USN have developped plane to match Zero's agility while being much better protected, they've also developped fighting doctrine that neutered advantages Zeroes had.
TL:DR such doctrine kinda did work irl but only untill oposite site developped counter measures.

Zeroes didn't get outclassed because their cannons couldn't shoot down better protected US fighters (spoiler alert they still could) but because of US fighters catching up on performance (while still being better protected) and improved engagement doctrine of USN fighter pilots. And Tie Fighters are precisely same on core concept - superior maneuverability, and extreme firepower with virtually no defences. And as Zeroes getting outperformed by later USN fighter models, Tie Fighters get's outperformed by X-Wings....
Also it wasn't me who came up with that Analogy, Lucas himself have admitted that Tie fighters are based on Japanese WW2 fighters doctrine...

    • @lancer737
      @lancer737 5 років тому

@@MehrumesDagon In the lore, all cannons on TIEs use their own independent power source. Considering what shield generators do, as opposed to cannons, the cannons are cheaper.
I never heard GL say that about TIE Fighters, it doesn't exactly work as an analogy though because Zeros didn't have that great of fire power vs early war US Navy fighters except maybe the Buffalo.
X-Wings do not outperform TIE FIGHTERS exactly, they both are considered equals overall. It would be the hit and run tactics that help the X-Wing get lots of kills.
Look at the Battle of Yavin, 9 TIEs took on over 30 wing fighters, 2 or 3 TIEs survived while only 3 X-Wings, 1 Y-Wing, and one Arrow Head Survived. The KDR is much higher for the Empire.
At Endor the overall numbers were 2 to 1 only when all the fighters from the fleet fought, they didn't though because lots of Squadrons were given defensive objectives and they didn't all fight till Lando merged both fleets to avoid the 2nd Death Star.
Theirs no super clear numbers, but the Alliance likely lost more fighters than the Empire. The Alliance lost 60% of all their A-Wing Interceptors, and those are the Alliances most deadly dogfighter at the time.

I can see merits from both of these military leaders. I agree that the standard TIE needs, ordinance launchers and shield generators. However, adding a hyperdrive increases the risk of desertion as well. Perhaps, if they simply added a hyperdrive but not included a navigation computer, It could have solve the problem.

Most Imperials were looking for their own gain only, and did not cared for the cost. Thrawn never cared for glory. He cared for efficiency, and defecting imperials hurt efficiency. It is a problem that must be solved. And one potential solution is to eliminate the cause of the problem. And Thrawn is known for trying to look for different potential solutions in order to find which one is best. Even if his thinking is too fast for most people to follow, and only see the end results. By developing a fighter with much greater efficiency he achieves multiple goals. First a portion of the defecters no longer defect. Second the navy gets a strong fighter that can fight efficiently against the Rebels' own small craft. And third he gives more option for the Empire to increase their presence. The Tie Defender had it's own hyperdrive, and thus capable of doing patrols without the assistance of a cruiser. This would have allowed the empire to maintain patrols to nearly everywhere at once. While these patrols couldn't stop a large invading rebel fleet they could have alarmed nearby imperial fleets about the incursion.

in the old game star wars rebellion (a very old RTS) which was a far superior game to any SW rts that came after it...
I realized just how ASS building the death star was and how insanely limiting the tie fighters were, the alliance fighters would literary pulverize my vastly superior fleets because I would lose half my star fighters early due to them slowly deploying from star destroyers (the alliance fighters hyper spaced in with the fleet)
it was not until I reached the tie defender and lancer frigate (both which thrawn researched) that I realized how insanely more powerful my navy became, the alliance had to marshal more capital vessels and match my tie defenders fighter to fighter if they wanted a chance to win, the death star was a HORRIBLE waste of resources, and with its cost I could make tens of capital ships and hundreds of tie squads (it should cost more but the game limited it)
I wish one day the game will get the remake it deserves

    • @akuladoctor7355
      @akuladoctor7355 2 роки тому

In Empire At War the Tie fighters got deployed real quick, and usually right after jumping on the battlefield. Meaning that unless, if you had the fleet jump into the middle of a fight the fighters, and bombers are already at your disposal.
But seeing most movies, and illustration i can see the point. They can release a limited tie-fighter at the same time, and the Rebels can basically shoot them as they move out.
As for the deathstar being a waste of resource. I am not fully sure about that. It was meant to be a deterrent mostly. The idea of terrifying everyone into submission. If you fight, if you rebel, then we can blow your entire planet to dust. It is similar to the Atomic bomb in real world. Nobody likes to attack a nation that has nuclear weapons. Knowing, that if they decide to use it, then there will be extreme casualties.

  • @brainplay8060

Tarkin seems to be the whipping boy for every bad doctrine. There was no need for a hyperdrive when the dogfighter's job is to defend capital ships against other ships. Meanwhile the capital ships did all of the heavy lifting for everything else. The Rebels didn't have capital ships so they needed something with a hyperdrive. Shielding isn't as big of an issue. It's a second chance only. A single volley will typically take down shields while the 2nd volley kills you. Even the really heavy shielding of the Ywing was quickly stripped by Vader in the trench at Yavin. Most ships had to sacrifice a heavier powerplant to meet the energy needs just to have them. TIE could out fly an Xwing easily but being clipped could take you out of the fight or killed.

In reading the comments, I am seeing a lot of folks questioning the Empire's general doctrines, and with good reason. What I think they are missing in their understanding of why those doctrines were enacted is the influence of Darth Sidious and the Dark-side of The Force. Remember that the Death Stars and the SSDs weren't just supposed to be weapons platforms. They were specifically designed to strike fear into the hearts of the galactic populous. Sidious, being a Sith Lord, could and did use that fear to make himself, not only politically more powerful, but also more powerful in the ways of the Sith. Imagine the power that a galaxy full of terror would have given a Sith Lord of Darth Sidious's magnitude and you can clearly see his reasons for implementing what was really a cataclysmically flawed doctrine. Sith Lords are all about their own personal power and this doctrine increased Sidious's own personal power to unbelievable heights. In fact, I believe it was this aspect that made Sidious the most powerful user of the Dark-side in Star Wars history.

The no hyperdrive, and dependence other ships aren't that bad idea. It guarantees that the pilot cannot desert during the battle at the very least. Unless Rebels manage to capture a large imperial ship. However the lack of shields, and strong weaponry are truly a bad idea. It means their efficiency drastically lowered, and peoples usually don't like suicide missions. When going into that fighter is a 90% chance of death, then people might reconsider their options to avoid it.

As is, Thrawn's T/D strikes me as massive overkill. Even the Empire's bloated military budget would be strained to include large fleets of Defenders in every battle group. If you get rid of both Death Star Projects, the TIE Defender or your idea of the enhanced Interceptor, would have been way more affordable to mass produce. The problem was really Darth Sidious. In short, the effect of those weapons on the Galactic populous would increase Sidious's PERSONAL strength. He cared about that over any other factor!!!

Hot take! Thrawn developed the TIE Defender not for the Empire, but for the Chiss Ascendancy, intentionally leaking the designs so they could better... defend... against the Grysk.
Remember, after stealing the republic shield generator, the Chiss Ascendancy didn't know how to use it. Thrawn's whole purpose for going to the Empire, under the false pretenses and theatrics of his exile, was to gain as much knowledge and experience with technologies from lesser space the Chiss Ascendancy can use to be more greatly protected.
The name "Defender" isn't about defending the Empire, but defending the Chiss Ascendancy.
