Buckley's is in my opinion, this one is great too, but his... I donno, it's just heavy, what was to come shortly after that adds to the weight. I dont think any covers of this are bad really, except country ones lol..... But no, Fuck country for real though.
The 'heaviness' is what makes this cover so damn good. All broken hallelujahs resonate in it, every word feels so true. Unlike all the other covers I've listened to so far - for me, they go over the edge, are too whiny, packed with excess, fake emotions. My opinion only, you don't need to agree; yet, 'heavy Wainwright' is the only cover of the song I can enjoy or even stand. ;)
With the greatest respect to both Leonard Cohen who wrote this song and also Jeff Buckley who created an amazing cover of this beautiful song, I have to admit that for me personally, something about Rufus Wainwright's version just really resonates with me above the rest.. Well done.
Same, I have absolutely no idea why it makes me emotional. It feels more raw than the previous 2 iterations, which are good, but this hits closer to home.
None of the other versions actually touch me emotionally like this one does. I can't listen to it unless I'm alone because whenever I listen to it it makes me cry, even when I was a little kid it made me cry
A lot of people say that's god touching your heart, I have those sometimes with certain songs, the first time my parents brought me into church and I understood what they where saying I started crying, not because I was sad but I just got hit with this big feeling on me and couldn't stop crying
How can a song be uplifting, defeated, hopeful, resigned, bitter, comforting, wry, blunt, introspective *and* for the universe? All at once? How? This song is as mysterious and miraculous as love itself.
This song reminds of the word hiraeth. A homesickness for a home to which you cannot return, a home which maybe never was; the nostalgia, the yearning, the grief for the lost places of your past. Whenever I drink a few beers, I find myself back at this song and shedding a tear.
That is exactly what I feel, but I was never able to put words to it. The place I grieve is my life before my husband died. 26 years this month. Thank you for giving me the words.
@@Yrkiesmom very sorry for your loss, and what you are feeling and how you identify with this song and the word hiraeth makes perfect sense to me. You are very welcome ❤️

It is clean, concise and we don't have to struggle to hear the lyrics we already know them and it becomes us just as great song must.

True love is priceless and never corrodes or looses its value. It is eternal. It may be pitchblack and the hurricane may be so strong it seems like judgement day, but the love still remains. The circumstance doesn't change its value, despite not always being able to see it or forgetting that despite the storm it is in the palm of your hands. And loving someone perfectly is not seeing someone through rosecolored glasses and certainly not seeing them through pitchblack shades. It is loving them for no more and no less than what they are, and not assuming you know everything about them when you dont, but loving them for exactly what you know themvto be, and passionately wanting to know more. Not all that glitters is gold, and the sweetest music isn't always the loudest.
I used to live alone before I knew you. I've seen your flag on the marble arch, love is not a victory march, it's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah. Gets me every time I hear that verse.
King David is a perfect example of an imperfect person God have chosen. Like me and you God drew you to this video to remind you and embrace you in spite of our imperfection. If you felt this music, then you felt God's embrace :)
I second Molly's comment below. No one can sing this song, quite like Rufus does. There is a quiet yet poignant way that Rufus has of singing this song that is hauntingly beyond beautiful. Thank you. ❤
I'm not a christian, but this is one of my favorite songs of all time. The biblical symbolism even alongside a loose interpreation of this song is so beautiful and powerful. rip leonard cohen
This songs means so much to my family. It was the song that played at my Great Grandma funeral. I sing it every time I'm baking. She is the reason I love music so much. She was always humming and singing in the kitchen. Her being apart of my life is the sweetest treat this world could give me.
lenovotny keep ur head up buddy, no matter what ur facing , never give up, no matter what happens , don't get discouraged, everyone has obstacles to overcome , the night is darkest before the dawn, and pain is weakness leaving the body, we're all in this together, I wish u the best, good luck, and keep on pushing
There was a time when I was devoted to The Lord. And everytime I hear the part "I remember when I moved in you, the Holy Dark (originally Dove/ reference to the Holy Spirit) was moving too and every breath we drew was Hallelujah" makes me tear up. The Lord is truly Good and there is nothing that can ever give us true peace but Him.
This song interleaves the love beween a man and a woman with the love between mankind and God. The word Halleluja is the thread that binds these themes. This is not a traditional love song or a hymn. It comes from a place of great pain, love turned sour, and from a broken man who questions God. The woman is a believer in the ideals of love and faith. The singer is not. There is an antagonistic tone between the man and the woman from the start of the song. He feels that she has a idealistic and rosy view of love and faith. She feels he does not truly believe in either. Yet at one time the lovers were engulfed in an intense love. Now the singer feels he was seduced and consumed by a force greater than himself. In their love he saw the divine, in their love he saw his destruction. To her the word Hallelujah is joyous and uttered from a place of faith. To him Hallelujah comes from a place that is "cold and broken." Source: www.quora.com/What-is-the-Leonard-Cohen-song-Hallelujah-about Contributor: Anonymous
He wrote nearly 300 versions of this song (Leonard Cohen). The lyrics used for this version were verses John Cale of the Velvet Underground selected from the collection of lyrics Cohen sent him after he told he wanted to cover the song. Cale had a liking to songs with religious vibes, so he selected nearly all the lyrics that had religious themes, and then put them in the order heard here. If anyone is talking about the meaning the artist intended I'm afraid that has doesn't really exist. However it's my opinion that artist intent doesn't matter when discerning meaning.
Let's make this clear for everyone wondering. No, this song is not bashing religion, it simply uses religious references to tell a story. Its melancholy undertones imply that the song is about a failed marriage.
This song playing at my funeral. I love this song & my beautiful husband sang it solo in the Harvest church Christmas show.. love and miss you Johnny 💐🐊.. Joanie
Running this song in 5 different tabs to hear a chorus of, Hallelujah. It's really cool he made this song years ago but he's said that word millions of times.
I can't listen to this song without crying. It was my Grandma's favorite song and they played it for her while she was dying. I had to sing it at her funeral and I still hate that I could only make it half-way through without breaking down. I finally thought I could handle listening to it two years later, but I can't. It's a beautiful song, but it's one I've tried to erase from my memory. Show the people you love that you love them before it's too late everyone. Maybe then you won't be broken down by a song.
I was an atheist who used to watch shrek as a kid. I was born in 95 and now that I believe in God, this song is just precious to me, afterall hallelujah means praise the Lord in Hebrew y'all! Not to sound pretentious.
This rendition touches my heart...it brings back memories of...and a time of innocence, and tells your heart that you are loved, and were loved, maybe even...the one who got away and you lived a life of wonder of why you let them go, or should have stayed together...but now its too late...
To me, its about an individual's spiritual journey which varies from individual to individual. The first verses are of course the spiritual journeys of Biblical figures, but the last is that of the writer of the song, the profound thing that he learned from life through the pain of experience. My two cents anyway.
This made me cry the first time i heard it and it made me cry more it's a time that i don't know what to do and i'm just sitting there like :/ what to do now that he's gone.....?
You never realize how much a particular artist influenced your life until they're gone. I never even knew Cohen was they who originally sang this song until a few days ago, but that doesn't stop me from mourning. He's alive in the hearts and minds of everyone who heard his music.
A million covers of this song. No one sings it like he does.

I may be an atheist but this song makes me thank god for all the good times I've had with my grandma listening to this song
I believe in the force, but damn i agree.
King David is a perfect example of an imperfect person God have chosen. Like me and you God drew you to this video to remind you and embrace you in spite of our imperfection. If you felt this music, then you felt God's embrace :)

I’m suppose to be singing this song at my moms aunts funeral. So this is the best version I could find
Did you sing it? Sorry for your loss.
@@mattd9692 I did
I second Molly's comment below. No one can sing this song, quite like Rufus does. There is a quiet yet poignant way that Rufus has of singing this song that is hauntingly beyond beautiful. Thank you. ❤
This is the best version hands down, and I love the song in general because it's the only song that actually makes me teary-eyed every time I hear it
This cover is so fucking good, even the URL stops and stares.
Liesl Weasel Ehrm absolutly no swearing in frount of the kids
omg so true lmao I love this cover the best!
this isn't a cover.
white hershy cutie our kids? Who is this? 🧐
Kim Lee yes. It is. Leonard Cohen is the original I believe.
I've had a tough few weeks. I ended up here. RIP Mr. Cohen.
lenovotny keep ur head up buddy, no matter what ur facing , never give up, no matter what happens , don't get discouraged, everyone has obstacles to overcome , the night is darkest before the dawn, and pain is weakness leaving the body, we're all in this together, I wish u the best, good luck, and keep on pushing

Except this song is about sex not God or religion. It uses religious imagery, but it's about sex.
@@memyself898 music has a thousand voices. And speaks to each of us differently. That's the beauty of Music
The absolutely best cover of this beautiful Leonard Cohen song.
this is my favorite version of hallelujah. i love his voice :)
To him Hallelujah comes from a place that is "cold and broken."

I know you copied that from a website but it's great that people on UA-cam can now read this.
LLHLMHfilms yeah i did copy it, i forgot to add the link. Thank you for reminding me. Ill add it when i have time.
Preach.
I have added the source and contributor. :D
However it's my opinion that artist intent doesn't matter when discerning meaning.
the best version of this song. I love so much
Let's make this clear for everyone wondering. No, this song is not bashing religion, it simply uses religious references to tell a story. Its melancholy undertones imply that the song is about a failed marriage.
"melancholy imdertones"
Your writing style reminds me of that of a shitty indie artist.
Nice stalking
I'm in your garden.
+Jake M. a beautiful curse.
This song is about Shrek
This brings me to tears every time.
Me too
I can't believe I discovered this lovely song from a Waluigi meme, either way thanks for sharing

Rest in peace Lenoard Cohan this song will forever be in my heart although I do not follow a religion. This song is amazing.
Thank you jesus christ for blessing me amen and providing family for me amen i love you
This song playing at my funeral.
It only means you care and there isn't anything wrong with that my friend nothing at all.
We all broken by the beauty of what touchsr our human souls . We are meant to be broken, in the best way, not through lack of love but because of it.
I was an atheist who used to watch shrek as a kid. I was born in 95 and now that I believe in God, this song is just precious to me, afterall hallelujah means praise the Lord in Hebrew y'all! Not to sound pretentious.
Christ. So many good musicians gone and now Chester. I'm broken fam.
Rufus passed to right? Or am.i mistaken?
Correction: You're a cold and you're a broken
Beautiful song

This rendition touches my heart...it brings back memories of...and a time of innocence, and tells your heart that you are loved, and were loved, maybe even...the one who got away and you lived a life of wonder of why
you let them go, or should have stayed together...but now its too late...
RIP The great Leonard Cohen, the writer of this song
This is just downright beautiful
To me, its about an individual's spiritual journey which varies from individual to individual. The first verses are of course the spiritual journeys of Biblical figures, but the last is that of the writer of the song, the profound thing that he learned from life through the pain of experience. My two cents anyway.
Hello my name is Josephine and Ive just heard this wonderful song and got to tears hallelujah.
thank you leonard cohen but this is how i will hear it forever sad and beautiful
Phoenix Fire
Phoenix Fire listening to this song broke out crying from all the old memories I'll never get to relive
