You are absolutely right on about The Greatest Showman. Visually very stunning - a spectactle - but it's all flash. Songs come from out of nowhere - no real buildup. Why develop character when you can jump into a song? It makes me sad because there is such a good story here, but you would never know it from the movie.

Judgmental much? Barnum never cheated on his wife. He got swept up for a while in the fame, and success, which included being in awe of Lind’s talent.
When he finally realized what she thought he wanted, he tried to reject her as politely as possible. Unfortunately, a woman scorned, she kissed him, knowing it would get him in trouble, sort of a farewell f*ck you.
Try to remember this is a time piece, and back then, these circus attractions were considered less than human by a number of ignorant folks, so when Barnum swoops in and shows them they’re more, of course they’d rally around him. There’s nothing cult like about it.

Also look really closely at how PT gets Phillip drunk while faking drinking. Phillip drinks 4 shots before agreeing to the job while PT has 1.5. He fills his shot halfway while giving Phillip the full shot in one scene and swirls his hand around with the shot in it so Phillip doesn’t notice the difference.
And when he doesn’t drink the shot when Phillip does when Phillip turns away from the piano. The second PT realizes Phillip isn’t looking, he puts down his shot and delivers the final piece of his argument/defense.
      It’s so beautifully done

You have to remember that, in the movie context, before Barnum, the performers were shunned, homeless, berated, bullied, etc. They were loyal to him because he gave them a home, a family, and treated them as though they were someone special to be celebrated and shown to the world, rather than freaks to be hidden away. In a way, he was allowing them to take control of how they allowed the rest of society to see them by embracing their different-ness.

I get that the real PT Barnum wasn't a great guy, but your read on his reactions to the different people he would hire to be part of his show is way different from mine. I never saw him as being creepy or audaciously being fascinated by what he saw as weird. I always felt he legitimately saw the humanity in them and was inspired by their talent and drive for authenticity. The movie, at least to me, continually pressed that theme rather successfully. And it goes nicely with his turn partway into the movie where the fame corrupts him and THEN he sees the people he once admired as nothing but sideshow attractions to his true success--and THEN it comes full circle when he realizes that he strayed from his original vision of celebrating the diversity and talent of his original hires.

But we have to think of the time these people lived in. The performers were on the fringe of society and being in Barnum’s show gave them money, housing, food, and a way to contribute in a more acceptable way (for the time). People had a lot of prejudice. It’s important that we learn from history but we can’t fully judge by today’s standards.

I have to say the reason Charity took him back so easily is because she knew his interest in Jenny wasn't about lust it was about the money. He literally told Jenny lynn like hey i want to give people genuine talent, without tricking them (Example: stuffing the tall guys shirt to make him appear fatter). He saw her as more a means to make him famous and Legit ( his family was still seen as poor class even though they had money). That's why when she came on to him he was like uhh wait you like me? I need to go. He was charming to all the people that he wanted to work for him, he charmed all the "freaks" to work for him and Jenny Lynn was no exception. Charity knew because of his traumatic childhood he wanted to prove his worth to her father and all the High society. Then he promised to change and she was like okay, he did. he made his family a priority and learned to be happy with what he had.

In the young PT Barnum montage is a scene where you realize his amazed by the performers. When the old lady gives him the apple, he saw the humanity in them.
And as another comment said, the contrast of them being homeless and humiliated to Barnum giving them a true community and control over how ppl see them is what make them loyal to him.
Like, for modern day it's not good at all, but giving the time context, what he did was pretty revolutionary

So, we all know that the actual singer of "Never Enough" went on BGT. She actually explained that it was Rebecca Ferguson who decided that Lauren should be the voice for the song and gave the honor to her. So, it was actually her choice not to sing the song, not the director or producers.
Edit: Also a fun fact about the scene of the fire. That was a real fire and they had trouble controlling it. Hugh Jackman actually ran into that burning building and saved Zac Effron. That scene wasn't fake, but it was too good to leave out and too authentic to try and recreate.

16:36 I feel like the reason why they chose for the circus performers to fight back at the protesters was to show that despite their leader shunning them, they still had what he gave them, a community. Through community, they accepted each other and were able to take on the outside world. It showed they no longer needed a leader; it was a stance of independence. Beforehand, they depended on Barnum to protect them, but this song demonstrated their power in numbers. When P.T. Barnum learns from his mistakes they forgive him because through community, they also learned acceptance.

He is great because he truly loved and missed his family and did what he could to start running his business in a way to free up some time for him to spend with his family. He didn’t even slightly care for that woman beyond the fame she got him. Not cheating is super easy when you actually like and love your spouse, we need to stop glorifying “resisting temptation” and acknowledge that maybe we should work on emotional intelligence and making sure you like the person you say you love. It is easy to mistake lust for love if you don’t know what it means to actually like your partner as a friend and person.

I've watched several documentaries about them and that is the one thing they all had in common...they were generally treated better when they were in the shows versus being in institutions prior to the popularity of the shows. Well, they needed to say she was an opera singer because Jenny Lind actually existed. In the 19th century, she was kind of a star, with a voice that was rumoured to be out of this world, like the most beautiful voice ever heard. Her byname accordingly was "The Swedish Nightingale". Needless to say, I was kind of disappointed when she sang yet another pop song (even if it fits to the movie and is really beautiful).
I also hated a lot about the movie, not gonna lie. From today´s standpoint the whole "I´m going to turn your ugly into beautiful" that he sold to the people just seemed insincere since he also exploited them for his own gain. Just my opinion. But in theory, people in mid-19th century were - like you said - really into sensationalism and exoticism. So the fact that people would love it and he recognized that is definitely and sadly true.

      Guys... (Please read)
The whole point of the movie was to create a message for people to realize. Well for me there's three messages. 1."Family is infinite and money is temporary." And 2. Real life struggles on how society views certain people. And the quote at the end of the end of the movie 3. "The noblest art is that of making others happy." I'm not hating on some of your comments nor Hannah's or anyone's opinions but I do believe there's such a thing as criticizing waaay too much. Yes Barnum brought them into the circus and basically put them on display for reasons that would benefit him and possibly his family too but at the same time he was the one to give them a chance while the mast majority of society didn't. While I do agree he wasn't a good person over all with the whole making them into a circus sort of deal but it is a fact that he treated them better than others. Even their own families. And as for the Jenny thing I know she was an opera singer but not everything has to be accurately lined up with history. Although it would've been interesting to see, I don't think it would've been as popular considering how popular pop is nowadays. At least that's my opinion on it. The song does fit well with the movie. Another thing I'd like to clear up on the last sentence is the fact that I don't think that it's only the realization of the people's enjoyment on it but more of the realization of future success. And that success led to fame which then started to lead to greed and finally ends up with nothing.(Until he got what he wanted back). Or it could've been he was happy finally doing something that gave him the opportunity to have people see his potential. Truly was blinded by greed. Once you pay attention closely to everything it can be clear. I can't agree on the hate of the movie because the things people hate about it was purposely put there to create the message but I can agree with the fact that Barnum has been a douche. But I also believe he at least had some humanity. After all people make mistakes. Lol sorry it's a long paragraph I get way too detailed when explaining things. That tends to always happen especially being observant..anyway again no hate. Just how I view it. 😅

@@strawberrylime33 Hugh Jackman simply met Zac Efron and loved him for the role, I don't think it was anything more than that. Jeremy was involved in the inital pitch and helped out by performing all the songs and reading some of the parts as Hugh Jackman couldn't sing due to having had surgery to remove cancer from his nose (didn't want him to pop his stitches, although he did anyway at the end).

  • @KE-hr4sb
    @KE-hr4sb 11 місяців тому +27

You need to watch two green light videos for this movie: “From Now On,” which Hugh Jackson sang after cancer surgery (he wasn’t supposed to be singing and his nose is bleeding at the end cause he ripped his stitches), and “This is Me.” Keala Settle wasn’t cast, she sang it as a favor to Hugh for the green light, and knocked it so far out of the park that she became the Bearded Lady.
Both are experiences I’ll never forget!
Also, I get what you’re saying about Barnum’s performers, but I heard someone once say something along the lines of, “people protest the circus and think they’re doing a good deed, fighting for equality and human rights. Then the circus shuts down and the performers lose their homes and jobs, and have nowhere else to go, while the protesters are done, they wash their hands of it and congratulate themselves on a job well done. They never stick around to make sure the performers can have another job, a place to stay, a hot meal.”
