    Rudy "fruity" Reyes is playing himself. The guy is a cartoon. High energy, and bonkers. I've seen him referred to, in videos with the fire arms community on UA-cam. I"ve also seen him on VETtv behind the scenes stuff. There is a video of him giving an interview about his life. The guy had a rough childhood, and raised his younger siblings. It's worth finding.

    I was a marine infantryman who deployed to afghanistan, and I love this series because it shows the ridiculousness of war that you never see in movies. The whole thing is just a complete shitshow.
    One time we were in a remote company outpost that required resupply by helicopter, and they accidently brought us 50 gallons of gasoline instead of water. We spent 3 days with no water while still running routine foot patrols, it was an awful experience...

    Some of these guys had already been in Afghanistan and were sent over to Iraq in their rotation. Fruity Rudy plays himself btw.

      Served both in Iraq and in Afghanistan (one of them twice, don't remember which one). Claims that acting was the scariest thing he'd ever done though.

    This show is based off of a novel written by the reporter imbedded with them. Many of those involved were used as advisors, a few of them are actors.
    One thing to keep in mind, only some of them Brad, Polk, Reyes pappy etc. are full Recon Marines, many had not finished or even gone to recon training, leadership positions (excluding fick )were not recon at all. The book clarifies a lot of why it caused problems

    • @dirus3142
      @dirus3142 3 роки тому

      This reminded me of problems LRP/LRRPs faced in Vietnam. When they are attached to regular army, even 101st, the officers did not know what to do with them. Or they did not respect them. So they were miss used at times.

    This series is made by the same guy who created The Wire. In The Wire (outside a few small moments) they used diegetic music, meaning no real soundtrack but music you’d hear from scenes (like a stereo playing or what somebody is listening to in their car). So this series kinda has a similar thing with music…no real background music, but the stuff the guys sing when they’re bored as hell driving around, etc. Pretty interesting.

    I'm reposting something I post on other reactions to address your Q's:
    About releasing the surrendering troops - In this war, the coalition needs to move fast. The style of warfare is Blitzkrieg, or manoeuvre warfare. You noticed how lightly armed and armoured the recon marines are. If they get stuck by the overwhelming enemy forces (Iraqi army, elite Republican Guard, or Fedayeen paramilitaries), not only are they in serious trouble, but the whole invasion could be compromised. The reason they let the surrenders go is because they lacked the means to receive them, this unit is speeding many kilometres ahead of any other coalition units.
    It's Important in this series that you watch the end credits of episodes 6 and 7. You'll understand when you hear them. You can watch the end credits of all the other episodes too, they play real radio chatter from the Marines. But it is episodes 6 and 7 that you cannot miss. Otherwise, glad you're watching this show. Just keep in mind this excerpt from the back cover of the book:
    "... They were a new breed of warrior unrecognisable to their forebears - soldiers raised on hip-hop, Internet porn, and video games, a desperate band of born-again Christians, dopers, Buddists, and New Agers who gleaned their precepts from Kung Fu movies and Oprah Winfrey. Cocky, brave, headstrong, wary, and mostly unprepared for the physical, emotional and moral horrors ahead, the 'First Suicide Battalion' would spearhead the blitzkrieg on Iraq, and be among the first American combat units baptised in the horrors of Iraq's terrifying guerilla war. Generation Kill is the funny, frightening, and profane firsthand account of these remarkable men, of the personal toll of victory, and of the randomness, brutality, and camaraderie of a new American war."

      I think they failed the "Blitzkrieg" if they are still in the same cities fighting 20 years later.

    • @EpicMRPancake
      @EpicMRPancake 3 роки тому

      @@TacticalSandals You mean the Iraqi military is fighting, as they have since 2011. Not even most of these cities had much fighting even in the 2000's, that was mostly around Baghdad and the west.

    • @Mauther
      @Mauther 3 роки тому +2

      It's also important to remember that the US had already fought the Iraqis a decade before. In Desert Storm, the allies blew through the Iraqis so fast that the most effective "defense" the Iraqis had was surrender. Surrendering units had to be disarmed, processed and guarded. The surrender would slow down the invasion for 10 or more hours. By Operation Iraqi Freedom, the word was jsut to bypass those units and keep the speed and aggression.

    • @pyro1047
      @pyro1047 2 роки тому

      Another point to the "Unsurrender them" comment. Once you officially accept POWs, you are legally responsible for them, their care, and all the other stuff that comes with that.
      Since they can't stop and take care of them, they have to act like the surrender never happened.

    • @EpicMRPancake
      @EpicMRPancake 2 роки тому

      @@pyro1047 Like you said, such a rule is unreasonable for a force that lacks the reasonable ability to accept and process POWs. This consideration ought to be instantiated in the rule about accepting surrenders to be better in line with the intent of the rule - that soldiers can reliably surrender to any enemy once they are out of the danger zone. Amongst other things, it is also that funnelling troops that are likely to surrender towards the enemy cannot be used as a delaying tactic by cynical commanders.

    These Marines are part of the 1st Recon Battalion. Marines technically don't have a special ops force, it was determined in 1982 I think it was that the Marine Corps didn't want to have a separate special ops unit, but Recon goes through additional training that the SEALS and other US Special ops go through. Jump School, scuba training, mountain warfare training, etc.

    The plans for the invasion came with a very short notice, and some of them were taken from the Afghanistan operation. The Marines just came with their standard issue gear without any consideration that it was a desert country, and they just had that short training session at Camp Mathilda in Kuwait before going into it. The American's did expect to just walk Iraq over, which did happen.

    I am from Guam, which has some of the highest recruitment per capita for the US military. There isn't a single family here that hasn't been affected in some way by our involvement in the Middle East, or most major conflicts since the Second World War. You're gonna see a lot of incompetence displayed in our leadership in this show and it will be very frustrating. Ask anyone that serves currently and it'll sadden you to learn that not much has changed. Our recent withdrawal from Afghanistan is proof of that.

    Camp Mathilda is always the name of the 1st Marine Divisions camp when they forward deploy for combat operations. It comes from their time in Australia where they went to refit after Guadalcanal. They got along great with the locals a d adopted "Walzing Mathilda" as the official unit song.

      I'll try to reduce flashing frames. I might just add a Generation Kill image there as a placeholder when there's nothing else.
      We found that in testing the bigger the movie/show frame size the faster it gets immediately blocked by HBO or whatever their parent companies are.
