Maybe people need weekly lessons on art concepts. Like a new art concept a week followed by examples so their opinions are based from an educated perspective rather than judging based off what they first see.
The plot has been lost and I have noticed communication through language, words, and phrases are misconstrued due to not understanding the point or intention along with the application of the concepts. This later translates in the misguided approach to how we digest information or interpret things such as art. If that makes sense.
Art education is not in school and it seems as though individuals who have the privilege to study performing art have a higher level of understanding for the originality and purpose of the arts.

Yeah, I think my perspective shift did a little bit as well once everything kind of played out. I still think that she probably could’ve handled that situation better but I don’t know how I would react either. Not sure if you knew, but Julia Michaels said that she and Benjamin Rice met with execs every week to discuss the music for "Wish," but were only given one storyboard and didn't have much direction. Concerning Barlow and Bear, they joined "Moana 2" last year when it was a tv show, so they were only given a year (if that) to write the songs in contrast to Lin's 3 years. Even if Lin is "better" than them musically, they didn't have the same opportunity he did. Not to mention, the film still comes off as episodic, meaning the 9 months they had to pivot from tv show to film weren't enough time for the directors and screenwriters to better the story or the characters. i loved your take on the poster thing.
i thought cynthia's performance was so intimate and sooo good that i thought back to that whole "controversy" and thought "honestly i think she had a point" lol.
this is a story that so many people have seen already, but the intimacy -- the close-ups, the subtleties, the emotion through the eyes, all things that just don't translate on stage the way they can on screen -- was powerful.
imo her, and ariana too, really put their entire souls into the work they did and it's palpable. i was coming into this movie expecting a surface-level good time. it was truly something special. it's nice to see a movie where it genuinely feels like everyone involved in the production cared, you just dont see quality and passion like that every day from anybody.

I definitely was able to see her perspective a bit better once the movie was made! You make an excellent point because in the movie it gets truly up close in personal. Sorry for the novel, y’all. But I gotta get this off my chest. The same people who claim to hate celebrities, are the ones obsessing over them. I’ve never seen so many people online act so mentally unwell and unhinged towards Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo. It’s dehumanizing, scary, and really sad. I saw two beautiful and talented women living out their dreams and developing a beautiful bond I wish to have with a friend one day. Maybe that’s why people have been so poisonous. Imagine if these people would stop b*tching and use that energy to come for actual predators and criminals in this country. SMH.
This “controversy” has taught me to completely ignore any gossip surrounding the personal lives of actors/performers in the industry (I’m specifically talking about romance and other things that don’t really matter, not about actual abusers). We quite literally do not know anything about their personal lives. I am completely turned off. I do not give AF. I just want to enjoy the art as it is. And Wicked exceeded my expectations. 30:04 As for the marketing issue, from what I understand, Barbie has always been associated with pink, while Wicked has not. A lot of Wicked's initial marketing felt unrelated to the movie's story or history.
As for "Wicked," the duo-color marketing felt more disingenuous because it was already done recently, and their colors aren't as heavily tied to their characters as Barbie’s, aside from Elphaba, obviously.
(However, renaming the "University of Greenwich" to the "University of Green Witch" was pretty clever, but I digress.)
Comparing "Barbenheimer" and "Glicked," Barbenheimer just had better correlation. Barbie has always been associated with pink and happiness, while Oppenheimer was the polar opposite. Additionally, both Barbie dolls and nuclear bombs have had massive social impacts on American culture, and their concurrent release dates were intentional and meant to rival each other due to a feud between Christopher Nolan and Warner Bros., but it had the opposite effect. Therefore, while Barbenheimer wasn't a complete coincidence, its popularization arose from grass-roots, fan-driven marketing, which added to its authentcity and appeal
Glicked, on the other hand, shared no correlation, which made the marketing come off as disingenuous. Plus, the casting of Ariana Grande as Glinda, without the public's awareness of her long love for the character and her deep-rooted history in musical theatre, made many initially feel like the producers only cast her to use her fame to sell tickets.
Although these aren't massive issues on their own, I think they collectively contributed to the initial hesitation among people to watch Wicked before it actually premiered.
Overall, I would say the movie itself did a better job of promoting its release.
I do apologize if this comment came off as blunt. I tried writing in an understandable way, but I can see how my comment may undermine the efforts of the Wicked marketing team.
I hope this atleast brought things more into perspective though! 😅👍

Will you ever consider doing a video on Hip Hop/Rap especially Female Rap? Like the state of it and back then and icons like Lil Kim, Foxy Brown, Nicki Minaj, Lauryn Hill and Missy Elliott (just to name a few). And how Nicki Minaj saved female rap in the late 2000s and the whole of the 2010s. How Lil Kim and Foxy Brown brought new things to rap, how Missy Elliott changed it in the late 90s and how Lauryn Hill changed it in 1998 with her album. The way female rap changed from the mid-late 80s to the whole the 90s and how Nicki revived it and how her and legends before her inspire the new girls.

So the director admits that the actors had to go through an entire physical and mental transformation in order to play these characters. He also admits that they were extra hard on Ariana, totally wiping away her personality because he didnt want the public to associate her with her. Now I understand whats happening to Cynthia and Ariana, they were completely brainwashed and reprogrammed. I hope they get therapy to help find themselves again. I'm sorry but I like the red lipped poster of Cynthia however the comments about what color are her lady parts was crude and out of line. Nobody was saying that mess about Zoe Saldana when she play Gamora.

I did end up seeing the poster fiasco on Twitter and I will admit after that subconsciously it did put me off seeing the movie. It just seemed like a non issue but I know Cynthia has gotten hate in the past due to previous roles so that probably attributed to her reaction although still unwarranted. But tbf even now seeing how these news article were treating Cynthia I kind of get it. I ended up seeing the movie and I was blown away. I will be seeing it again.
Really and truly her reaction even though weird at the time isn’t that big of the deal out of celebrities doing crazy shit and I think people were and are still really hard on Cynthia. Yes, I’ve been hearing this a lot as well! The appreciation for actually embracing the fact that it’s a musical and not hiding that fact. I think a lot of musicals producing Hollywood lately have been shying away from it when there’s an audience that exist that will enjoy it. I think it’s a false advertising that pisses people off the most. For example, I know this was an issue with the mean girls movie that came out. I guess a lot of people didn’t realize that it was a musical based off of the marketing.

Haven't seen the movie but wow it sounds super interesting and good to know that it is doing well. I will say that I agree w/ Cynthia in regards to that Wicked poster fan edit. Removing or obfuscating a person's eyes is an act of dehumanization (often seen in gruesome media as just black bars on top of perpetrator's eyes even for an example), It's as the saying goes "Eyes are the windows to one's soul". While there are times when creative people do that very carefully w/ intent to add a bit of mystery and intrigue to the character esp. if they might be villainous, such a change to the poster just rubs me the wrong way as if some foul play from racially motivated people was involved while they can very conveniently hide behind the excuse of 'fixing the poster'. I'd say even then actual movie version of the poster fits a lot better to the primary themes than the original one and the fanedit one (much more subtle smirks from both Cynthia and Ariana which can get someone thinking whether if it's a sinister one or not really sells it).
OH and your edits n' inserts game is firing on all cylinders Camryn! Love to see those 😊

But when you have been in something so beautiful and the experience was absolutely amazing and you actually love the people you worked with to the point where going to work does not feel like work, when you reflect on everything, you *do* get emotional. You're happy and sad at the same time because it's all over now but you all produced something incredible. I don’t think it was ever really about the poster. It’s like how when couples argue about the stove but it’s never really about the stove. It’s about the buildup of let downs that contribute to an argument over seemingly stupid things. I think what she was actually upset about (maybe because I don’t live in her head but I do know what it’s like to feel not important) the fandom not seeing her. Not seeing her talent, not loving her as a person. If someone live Dove got the role, there would be equal discourse much more love on her side. For Cynthia she was so nonexistent to the public people barely know her name, we just know Ariana grande was in it and to most people Ariana SEEMS more important. It’s unfair and it’s understandable she was upset for being mocked. 14:08

The movie was actually announced in 2012 meaning it has been a DECADE that fans of the musical have been waiting for this movie. A lot of Cynthia “drama” is simply misogynist bccs if it were Ariana in that position she’d be a “icon” (I can say this I love Ariana and her music but I’m also a black woman) I also HATED the marketing for the movie because they marketed it as just some chick flick about friends which it is but it’s so much more than that and I also blame marketing for the Cynthia being overlooked thing it’s so dumb. Another thing is when you’re in a musical, you’re doing a LOT of dancing for many hours of the day especially since this is a film that means they had to put forth 10x the energy for multiple takes for 12 hour work days. Logically with all that exercise you’re gonna lose a little weight. Also there have been other black elphabas on the west end and as replacements the one you mentioned was just the first one

Stan Twitter doesn't take everything as a joke. They take it as a passive aggressive action and then they retaliate accordingly. Ariana stans felt like Ariana was being attacked by Cynthia in a passive aggressive action when Cynthia referenced erasure. So Ariana stans reflected that assumed aggression back at Cynthia. Ariana stans have been known to make racist/out-of-pocket comments as a defense mechanism for Ariana's black fishing. Now stans automatically deflect anything a person of color says in contrast to Ariana even when its not directly attacking Ariana. I 100% believe stans directly attacked Cynthia because of an underlying racism in defense of Ariana's black fishing. If this was not the narrative, then stans would've not been so quick to belittle Cynthia.
Edit: I want to make it abundantly clear, I don't have a problem with Ariana. I have a problem with the racist passive aggressive nature of her hard core fans. It's gross and I will never disclose to anyone I'm an Ariana fan. I do not want to be associated with that awful behavior.
2nd edit 🫣: I'm extremely frustrated with how the election ended. Cheeto puff won with, close to, the amount of votes he lost with in 2020.
I was a first time voter in 2016. I voted Hillary not because I wanted to, but because I had to. I felt a deep sense of sorrow and disappoint when orange peel won.
Same thing this year. With Kamala, my issues on Palestine were still not addressed by the party. However that was my main issue, I had a few more but obliviously I was gonna vote Kamala vs throw my vote away, with such high steaks. I thought others would do the same. My mistake in 2016 became my mistake in 2024, believing there is no possible way burnt toast could win. I think it's extremely disheartening that a portion of leftist, moral voter's used this election of all elections to use their vote in protest. It didn't work and now we're f'd.
