  • Hi everyone, hope you're well and you enjoy this wee tour & celebration of Edinburgh's beautiful New Town. I had a bit of time this week to put this together and I'll be releasing a wee update video shortly. I had planned to take a break until Christmas, but I'm getting through my work quicker than I expected and so I'll keep posting when I can, there just won't be any time scale. I'll be releasing a small article on my website to accompany this video explaining how the New Town came about.
Edinburgh's New Town is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The inspiration for the 'new town', on the far side of the Nor' Loch, was Lord Provost George Drummond's, who was concerned about the then filthy and overcrowded conditions of the city, mainly in the Old Town around the Castle and Royal Mile. A competition to plan the first new town was won in 1766 by James Craig who was just 23 years old and completely unknown. His plan was for a 'grid-iron' pattern of three main streets, Princes Street, George Street and Queen Street, with gardens and a square at each end (St Andrew and Charlotte Square). Houses were originally built along Princes Street too, but these have now long since given way to shops and offices. There have been many new phases to the New Town, which all have their own character, and it's great fun to have a wander around and discover all these wonderful architectural styles.

Hope you enjoy this wee celebration of Edinburgh's beautiful New Town. It often gets forgotten about in favour of the Old Town, but I love it just as much for its great character and elegance and always encourage people to explore and discover it. Hope you all have a lovely weekend and a big shout out to everyone who's subscribed. I really appreciate it. Best wishes, David 🙂

Thanks so much Mike, I'm so glad you enjoyed it and it brought back a few memories. Wandering around the New Town is one of my favourite things to do and I always discover something new. It was really nice to be able to film some of it as I'd had it in the back of my mind for a while. Take care and have a lovely weekend. All the best, David 🙂

Fabulous. I have watched this several times since its debut, with each time feeling like the first. And on New Years Day 2024 I, a thousand-plus miles away, can think of nowhere else I would rather be than 'walking' these fabulous streets thanks to your efforts to share this city we love with with the world. And as usual, in addition to you appreciation of the nuances (I love the contemplative pigeon), your choice of music is perfect.
    Thank you.

Thanks so much for your kind words. Really glad you've enjoyed watching and liked the music. It's always a worry choosing music, as it's difficult to appeal to everyone, but I just go with my instinct. Hope you can visit soon and best wishes for a happy & healthy 2024. All the best, David :-)

Awww, Alan that's so incredibly kind of you and so deeply appreciated. You've been such a support to me over the last 18 months and I can't thank you enough for that. I can honestly say, that I might not even be making the videos if it weren't for the incredible support and encouragement of people like yourself. So a huge thank you! I was intending to take a break, as I have so much that needs done, but the lure of filming draws me back and I think when you really love doing something it's really very hard to stop. I'll probably end up burning the midnight oil :-) Yes, it's so heartwarming seeing the 'sleeping giant' come back to life and I'm really looking forward to seeing Edinburgh lit up again this Christmas. Hope you have a wonderful weekend and thanks again for you wonderful support. Best wishes, David 🙂

Another enjoyable video, you somehow have the knack to make ordinary things and scenes look special, with angles and colours etc, magical

Thanks so much Harry. I can't thank you enough for noticing all the small details. I work really hard to include them and it means such a lot to me that you noticed. Edinburgh is slowly coming back to life again and I'm really looking forward to seeing the city lit up again this year in festive cheer. It's felt like such a long time since the city had anything to celebrate and it'll be nice to see people enjoying themselves - albeit in a safe and responsible way. The new pill that's just been released should be a real game-changer and hopefully, 2022 will be a wonderful year now we have effective treatment. Thanks for all your support Harry and have a lovely weekend. All the best, David 🙂

You are so lucky to live in a place where even the cities are beautiful. I suppose it's age that does that? Age builds character, and character is beautiful. If you were somehow limited to American cities for your material, you would be hard put to find enough scenery worth looking at to fill even two of your short videos. I'm glad that you seem to have decided to postpone your "break:.

Thanks so much, hope you're well. Yes, we're exceptionally lucky to live in such a beautiful city and country. I think it's very easy to take it all for granted, especially when you've been born here. I think the juxtaposed Old Town and New Town are really quite a remarkable contrast and add such a lot to the varied character and architecture of the city. The irony of the New Town is that it isn't that new anymore and many of the buildings in the Old Town are actually not that old! Yes, I really did intend to have a proper break, as there's so much I need to do, personally and professionally, but I've missed filming for myself and I guess I'm just going to be burning the midnight oil to get it all done :-) I've just filmed a wee update video explaining where I'm at which I should have out shortly. Thanks so much for sticking with me. All the best, David 🙂

Hi David, I love Edinburgh's New Town, it is so fine, the Georgian architecture gives it a noble feel. I stayed on Frederick Street and was central to everything. The plants, towers, an excellent presentation, thank you so much. Hope you are well, take care and God bless you.

Hi Janet, so glad you enjoyed it and how lucky you were to stay on Frederick Street. I'm a huge fan of the New Town and sometimes feel it's forgotten with all the focus on the Old Town. Thanks for all your kind words and support, have a lovely weekend, best wishes, David

Really looking forward to December, fingers crossed, when we will be back in my favourite city. David as always a joy to watch your work. It made me smile to see you kicking through the leaves. It’s exactly what my wife andI were doing earlier this week!! Keep safe, happy and well. C

Thanks Clive, hope you're well. Yes I do love a week kick through the leaves 🙂Makes me feel like a kid again! They'd swept them all up in Charlotte Square, so the piles were huge! It's wonderful that Edinburgh will be able to celebrate Christmas again this year. While we must all stay vigilant, we must also strive to get back to enjoying life again. It'll be great to see the ice-rink back in George Street this year, I always thought is was a lovely sight. Hope you have a wonderful time when you visit. Have a lovely weekend, David

Hi Tom, that’s very kind of you and much appreciated. Ideally I’d like to have more time to make these, but I do what I can, so it’s greatly appreciated when people enjoy it. The New Town is architecturally fascinating and it was great fun to film. Hope to have another video out this weekend which I hope you’ll enjoy too. Thanks for your support.
