    3:02 if someone missed what was the error, VOR DME ILS approach involves the plane flying over the VOR signal transmitter which is situated at the airport then flying certain amount of miles away and turning back to align with the runway whereas the arc approach will have have fly 12 miles away from the transmitter in a arc/semi-circle shape so that he is constantly 12 miles away from it and then when he is close, aligns with the runway and lands. He didn't overfly the airport but was 12 miles out, did the arc and came in.
    You can notice he is not comfortable with English and struggles to readback the complete message and replies with "wilco" i.e will comply. Now atc allowed it probably because the area was not that busy, I recon she is from the air force tower, but on a busy day they would just let them know while on air. What really surprises me is at that moment probably 2 sets of crew were in the cockpit i.e 4 pilots. The pilot flying should have for sure asked the pilot monitoring, who is the radio operator what is going on.
    But aviation is a tough business, it is easy to get nervous and humans have a tendency to do such errors closer to destination. He even misses his callsign with Emirates 568 and not 586, if you are confused just always ask.

      @@losedarkhorse well yes I am not aware of how Emirates work, so thanks for the update but I would stress on the word I used- "probably" 2 set of crew not "surely". I agree with the fact that Emirates has some standards when it comes to english and that's what surprises me. I want to believe there is a difference between the language not being his preferred one and him not being comfortable with it, everyone has a different opinion and somehow I felt the latter is correct. It's just the level of perfect one expects from Emirates that makes one sceptical after seeing it unfold, I don't mean to offend you, just wanted you to know what is in my mind.

      Ron Baruah Right. What I don’t understand is, if ATC cleared them for a VOR/DME ILS approach, they would have selected it on the FMC and executed it by following the system. Wonder what they were thinking! Wonder what the Captain was doing! Unless they were planning to save time and effort.

      @@XerxesLangrana because the approach isn't available on the FMC. Yes you can select the runway and tell the aircraft you are going to use the ils so it automatically tunes in the frequency, but then overflying the dme is basic nav and needs a few calculations from the pilot, overall slightly complicated to explain in the comments but you can find videos on how airliners do it.

    The problem here is expectation vs reality. When you are a regular inbound from the West you almost always do the arc. When you are not a regular you expect the arc as the VOR overhead doesn't make sense to the pilot brain. ATC was clear but the crew should have asked for the arc approach clearance. You have to be mindful in DAC that the arc is not always a standard clearance althouh you might fly it 95% of the time.

    • @Capt.Alron.D
      @Capt.Alron.D 5 років тому

      @@snhoque says who? The most error caused in aviation are pilot errors.
      Also small mistakes here and there are quite common cause there are way too many things to do. Specially on a busy day.
      I think more correct way of putting it would be: pilots should not make serious and obvious mistakes.

    • @Capt.Alron.D
      @Capt.Alron.D 5 років тому

      @Rony Hasan 737 issue happened cause the pilots were not trained adequately to deal with the situation and the changes boeing made to the aircraft, initially pilots weren't even aware of the new system changes. I don't recall it properly now but think it was some MCAS related issue causing run-away stabilizer with a simple fix as turn off stab trim (but no one knew then)
      But i will tell you why most errors are pilot input errors
      1) sometimes it's miscommunication like the one is this video they landed safely but if there would have been any traffic flying the dme arc, tcas would have gone off.
      2) even when the aircrafts are automated does not mean they fly on their own they still need the data inputs from pilots (if your expected approach / route changes now a pilot has to make the changes in mcdu/fms or whatever flight computer the aircraft has, re-brief the approach, make required navigation radio freq changes, monitor for traffic and listen out on comm freq make changes according to atc (if busy aerodrome), re do decent calculation etc. So a potential to make lot of tiny errors (add fatigue factor to that and the chances of errors go up exponentially) but all these errors are usually small and cause no grave danger also if not the automation only helps to keep the aircraft safe.
      3) when we think of aviation most of us only think of big aircrafts like boeing and airbus, you also have to consider general aviation aircrafts which do not offer similar automation control and requires manual inputs and computations.
      Ask any pilot and they will tell you how many mistakes they have made during duty times!
      At some point in aviation exam one will come across such question correct answer being pilot error (cause general aviation also makes a big part of aviation)

    • @Capt.Alron.D
      @Capt.Alron.D 5 років тому

      @Rony Hasan yeah the 737 was an exceptional case, it was a software issue agreed never said it was pilot error , No one knew what to do when it happened also boeing initially didn't even knew what was causing it. The automation wasn't high it was just the pilot turning off the wrong systems cause they didn't knew any better, turning off autopilot did nothing cause it wasn't a part of it. MCAS was more like a flight augmenting system boeing designed to make the max have the same flying characteristics as the 737NG and worked independently, and boeing didn't feel necessary to publish that changes, only boeing is to be blamed for those crashes.
      i am not saying automation is fail safe infact there is probably 100 of aircrafts flying now with some equipment or system that isn't working but every aircraft operators have a mel (minimum equipment list) i.e the minimum amount of serviceable equipment an aircraft should have to carry out safe operations there is also a master minimum equipment list (mmel) but lets not get there.
      Point is even if automation fails the pilot can turn off that system and take manual control.
      Aviation is more safer than it ever used to be but when it comes to errors pilot are known to make a lot of them and only thing it ever causes is some embarrassment infront of the companion pilot and nothing else.

    • @Capt.Alron.D
      @Capt.Alron.D 5 років тому

      Please read it all
      Also I can't figure what point are you trying to make! What is the argument about? Like automation makes aircraft more unsafe? That's very debatable. Also one can take manual control of aircraft, there is no automated system for aircraft control that you can't manually override if there is any please tell me. ( this boeing issue was a massive misinformation and lack of training regarding the the new aircraft and changes) can you give me some other cases of such?

      Instead of carrying out a over head vor dme ils approach ( which requires flying on approach track till overhead vor (airport)then flying outbound on a radial for some published distance then doing a procedure turn after to establish on ils for final (no charts referred). he did an vor dme arc which means at a certain dme distance from the vor say 14 nm dme arc, you turn to left or right to establish on a dme arc (imagine a vor as a centre point of a circle which has a radius of 14nm) so you fly your aircraft on that 14 nm circumference till you get to the other side of the airport crossing it on a semi-circle path then establish on final.
      Edit: In simple terms instead of going over the airport to the other side you go around the airport.
      And the mistake was he was supposed to go over the airport for landing from the other direction but he went around it.

    Can anyone explain what the f is this QDM VOR and ACR, Everyone talking here but am just reading it without having any idea :(

    • @Capt.Alron.D
      @Capt.Alron.D 5 років тому +3

      QDM is one of many Q codes in aviation and Q codes are sort of a short terms used to describe various things related to navigation, weather, procedures etc.
      QDM Means - magnetic heading from the aircraft to the VOR station located on ground.
      A very basic explanation - VOR is a ground based navigation aid located at or near the airport that uses a series of magnetic radials in all directions, a aircraft can use one of these 360 degree radials (360 cause that makes a complete circle) to fly near and away from the vor station in any direction.
      Vor is also used in aviation for approach, holds, enroute navigation etc
      In this case the vor was used as a part of approach for landing and the Arc is a part of a vor dme approach which keeps you at constant distance away from the airport (imagine the airport as the centre point of the circle and you are flying your aircraft on its circumference ) but you don't fly in rounds around the airport you only fly half or less than half of the circle (Hence called ARC) till you are close enough to turn and join the runway heading for landing.
      Edit: DME- stands for distance measuring equipment and it does exactly what the name says.
      Its a standalone equipment but is mostly co-located with the vor station and also is frequency paired with it. So if a vor station is tuned it automatically gives the approximate distance to the vor as well.

    I guess more of an ego thing with the lady. At the beginning of the video the PNF tells ATC they are on the arc, after which she clears them for the 12 DME arc approach. She could have denied authorisation then and there and made them do the VOR/DME ILS approach instead. It is likely that Approach control authorised them for the arc as well, so the PNF claims when she reprimands them. There is no issue with language. The PNF understands and speaks English perfectly well albeit with a heavy accent. Very professional crew. No problem here. No safety compromised.

    is this a fault of Emirates or Dhaka tower?? at 0.35 emirates were cleared for 12 dme arc runway 14.... but at 3.16, she was saying that Emirates were not cleared for 12 dme arc approach.....its clearly audible. Still Emirates apologised. Still the behavior of both sides were really appreciateable.

      Even at the dtart of the video atc told him to go and report for VOR. And pilot confirmed he joind the arc approach. As the path was clear atc didnt bother to change or cancel the approach.

    • @casilasgoaler
      @casilasgoaler 5 років тому +1

      At 0:15 they were cleared for the VOR DME Approach, but when the pilot said he was established on the DME ARC, the tower didn't change it. That doesn't necessarily have to mean the tower was happy about it. Tower cleared him for the VOR DME Approach, but didn't want to make issues so she recleared for DME ARC. Like the Emirates pilot said that Approach advised them a DME ARC, so they flew it. If they are right, then probably it was a miscommunication between Tower and Approach control. If so, neither Tower, nor the pilots were at fault.

    • @losedarkhorse

      Muhammad sultanul arafin TCAS can fail but the fact is the atc in its system could have spotted other traffic and any chance of collision could have been avoided. The atc figures it out very quickly what type of approach the flight was initiating despite they waited till it lands because they were aware that a chance of collision in this case was extremely unlikely. All ended well here that’s all matters.
