    Michael Kamen described Metallica's music as beautifully stark black and white pictures. And he can't improve on the black and white, so he just adds splashes of color. And I love that THAT was his philosophy in approaching their music.

    Oh, you have to do the instrumental, Orion, from this same album. There’s a beautiful 6/8 interlude which showcases Cliff - he actually plays a bass solo at the end of the part that I always thought was on guitar. One of their best compositions, IMHO. Cheers!

      @@2giantmonsters It's hard to argue that! I remember taping For Whom the Bell Tolls off the radio. We were all Metalheads but when I played the song for them they didn't get why I liked it. Too fast, too loud, can't make out all the lyrics, singer has a HORRIBLE voice. I heard all these remarks and I'm sure a few more that I don't recall.
      By the time Master of Puppets came out they all had "got it"! It's always cool when you turned 12 to 15 people on to the band...even if it took them over a year. Then how many people did those friends turn on to the band!
      I kind of got a "new band" pass where if I told them to check out a new band they trusted that they should REALLY look into them since probably 6 or 8 of them would call Metallica their favorite band of all bands or performers!

    I was at both nights of this performance. Flew out there from Ohio, stayed in a HORRID hotel after the first show and flew back home after the second show with NO sleep. Was too worried that the guy in the next room was going to shoot me while he screamed at his lady.
    The orchestra was SO into it. They had no idea what they were in for. When they showed up the first night, those of us who were outside the venue started to cheer for them. Pretty sure they never had that happen before.

    It's great to hear a composer critique this. When I was young in the 80's I always thought that metal, especially this band, had a medievel sound. It sounds like something that classical composers would have come up with. Like the soundtrack to the great crusades. The conductor said it was very well written music. The symphony really added to their sound. Great reaction.

    Also, about this song, there are some curious facts that I believe would be nice to share:
    1st- there's a riff from the song, after the second solo (the one from Kirk) that was from a David Bowie song, it was an homage from Cliff!
    2nd - in most performances (not this one, sadly), James sings Pancakes instead of fix me just before a solo (in this particular version, it was "Fix me baby"). Besides being funny for its randomness, it's also an homage to Cliff (from a joke he made in the last tour he was), and would be amazing to see your reaction to it, sadly it didn't happen

    • @MrBassmaster72
      @MrBassmaster72 2 роки тому +9

      I don’t even know where to start with that ignorant last sentence. Is Lars the best drummer ever? Certainly not. However, he has played thousands of live shows all over the world for arguably the biggest metal band ever. I know it’s the “cool” thing to dump on Lars but to say he can’t play live is asinine.

    • @eliashornwall8546
      @eliashornwall8546 2 роки тому +3

      @@MrBassmaster72 I know it’s a bit of an over exaggeration to say that he can’t play live, but you must admit, he’s not exactly the most consistent drummer ever. Just in this video even, he’s not looking too good, and this is where he played with an orchestra, so presumably he actually tried for this one, instead of the rest, where he either was 24 and high on cocaine or older and just gave up. There are some “questionable” drum fills he likes to do that gets sprinkled in, with his otherwise mediocre playing, which all in all makes live Metallica a less than adequate live experience. The few exceptions to me are the old stuff from when he was younger and could still play fast, and the absolute latest tours from 2017-2019 when they actually started trying again. Still Lars’s weird fills and his tempo changes still makes their live stuff very sub par.
      So no I’m not just dunking on him cause it’s popular. The sad fact is he just isn’t very good live.
      Ps. This is not to discredit his huge impact on metal or to say that he is a bad songwriter. Just saying he’s not very tight.
      Edit: Spelling errors.

      @aldersmoke1 2 роки тому +3

      Nothing is more exasperating than the Lars hate. I play in bands and I'm super picky about drummers, and I've watched a ton of live Metallica footage. Lars is fine. I swear every modern metalhead expects every drummer to be all blast beats and double bass or they suck. Lars actually has interesting, syncopated ideas, as opposed to hitting every drum every 2 seconds.

    • @MrBassmaster72
      @MrBassmaster72 2 роки тому +1

      @@eliashornwall8546 I agree with you on this post. This was said much better. Well said.
      Lars may be a bit sloppy for sure but who cares really? The influence he had on metal music is huge and ask any metal drummer out there and they cite Lars as an influence. I do miss the fast younger days. We are on the same page with that.
      It just gets under my skin having to defend Lars. I’ve always liked him and he had a big impact on me personally. I think of it like basketball sometimes. Is the last guy on the bench for an NBA team as good as LeBron or Jordan? No they aren’t. But that doesn’t mean they can’t play well. Are they the best ever? No. Could they dominate any “normal” Joe Blow basketball player? Every time.
      I have seen Metallica a dozen times live and never did I consider it to be a marginal experience. It’s been fantastic every time and I’ll always continue to go see them live. No matter what kind of nite Lars may be having at the time.
      With that said, I appreciate you clarifying your position and thanks much for not taking it personally and simply making your point. I sure wish everyone could do that but it appears to be a lost art these days.
      Have a good one man! Keep jammin!!!

    • @Broccoli_Highkicks
      @Broccoli_Highkicks 2 роки тому +3

      If you're going to a rock & roll show and expecting a perfect reproduction of the studio recording, you've missed the point rather tragically. As Mantas of the famously shambolic band Venom once screeched into the mic, "If you want to hear Venom [studio recording quality and accuracy], go home and listen to your fucking LPs, cuz tonight you are gonna get one and a half hours of pure fucking mayhem!"
      A big aspect of going to a live metal show is rocking out, not counting beats or trying to get a good cellphone clip for the Youtoobs. In a live situation, passion and feel are more important than accuracy, at least in heavy rock music.
      Besides, every rock & roll show ought to be a unique experience with spur of the moment improvisation, crowd interaction, etc. - what's the point of seeing a band twice if it's the same exact show each time? That's something I greatly miss about the 1970s, when any given show could feature long stretches of improvisation, impromptu alternate arrangements of songs, etc. When a rock concert could actually be a unique musical event, instead of a carbon copy of every other night of the tour.
      Also, I think it's a bit rich to complain to the creators of the piece that "that's not how you played it the first time!". I remember when Prince smoked the Superbowl half-time show, which probably will stand as the greatest of all time, hearing people jeer and complain that he didn't play the Purple Rain solo exactly as it was on the record. OK, when YOU write a monster hit song and are widely recognized as one of the greatest guitar players and performers in popular music, YOU go out and play it note-perfect every single night... I think when you write a song, you get to play it any way you damn well please. But music fans get so entitled, they think because they bought the record and the shirt, they can put the artist in their back pocket.
      Having ranted about all that, it is true enough that Lars does not have the skills to back up his overinflated rock star ego - everyone knows this, even Metallica knows this. Hell, James turned Lars down the first time they jammed together because Lars was so bad. But Metallica would never have been what it was and is without Lars. And hey, in a live situation I don't really care if he takes shortcuts, and ultimately, people who get too anal about details and technique tend to be people who spend their whole life practising in their bedroom and never inspiring a single kid to pick up an instrument.

      Exactly my thoughts. What a great song it is in its original album variant, and what an unlistenable mess it is in this performance, unfortunately.

    The studio version of MoP sounds so tight! Because they recorded it at slower tempo and sped it up for the mixing/mastering (probably they were even tuned slightly lower than E for that). I agree that Orion or Call of Ktulu should be the next ones. I always wonder why Lars makes such big difference between studio and live versions...

    That main verse riff has a bar of 21/32, but it's all done by feel (so like, 5/8 with a little extra). A lot of old Metallica, especially on Master Of Puppets and ...And Justice For All have some odd time signatures (the main riff in Blackened is in 7/4, stuff like that).

    Awesome reaction, Doug! Yesh, Metallica did a stellar performance here with the symphony orchestra. I'm pretty sure the members of the orchestra weren't used to having a loud, raucous singing audience before too, hehehe!!! You should do a reaction to Kiss live with the Melbourne symphony. "I was Made For Loving You" would be an awesome choice!!!

    I'd still really love you to react to "The Attitude Song" by Steve Vai, done with an orchestra. I think you'd be interested in the time signature changes. It's just compositionally interesting! Another I'm dying to see you do is Zappa's "The Black Page" - so named because the score has so many notes, there's more black than white on the page!

    I’ve got to say, I MUCH prefer the orchestra in the S&M2 arrangement. It actually feels like a properly integrated part of the piece, as opposed to in juxtaposition with Metallica themselves, which this version sounds like.

    Some possible future reactions similar to this one. Concerto for Group and Orchestra, a three-movement epic composed by John Lord as a solo project and performed by Deep Purple at the Royal Albert Hall in London with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Malcolm Arnold. This was the first thing that the Mark II version of the band did even before In Rock, their first proper Deep Purple album. Alongside Days of Future Passed by the Moody Blues and Five Bridges by the Nice, it was one of the first collaborations between a rock band and an orchestra.
