I'm the opposite. The symphony shrouds all the guitars and it sounds like a mess at times. You can barely hear James jamming at the end of the song which is a shame because it's the best part of the song

@@AndyTheRoo yep. shoe horning in Orchaestral melodies that have nothing to do with anything going, bar being in the same key, is NOT making a song better. Its laughable . He should have done the album version, ALL its impact is lost in this forgettable mediocre live performance.

RIP Michael Kamen. This concert was his idea and is his legacy in the metal music.
The Outlaw Torn is one of the hidden gems of Metallica (pure thrashers don't give a f about it, but their loss). From Load album, I like "Until it Sleeps", "King Nothing", "Bleeding Me", "Mama Said", "Hero of the Day" and "Ain't My b1tch", apart for The Outlaw Torn.

      There's a story.
He wrote the orchestrations while listening to the album versions of the songs. He then had to transpose some of them a half step down to match the guitar tuning. When rehearsing "The Call of Ktulu", one instrument, just one (I forget which one it was) was playing the old sheet music; he heard it, and called it out. Gifted beyond imagination.

Was fortunate to see Maestro Kamen play keyboards on Roger Waters first solo tour, The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking. His team recreated all of Rick's synth sounds perfectly. Ever Fliyd song sounded EXACTLY like the album, due in large part to MK.
This was the only tour Rig did this. On every subsequent your, the songs were retooled by The Bleeding Hearts Band. Growing over the years into new and unique pieces that fit the current performers.
I was very bummed to not be able to attend this show. When I heard that he'd written arrangements and new material with James, I was more than excited.
The performance was expertly recorded, the band and orchestra working together and not fighting. Due in large part to the brilliant arrangements.

in 1991, Kamen did the "elevator version" of Nothing Else Matters. Kamen suggested that the band should play a concert with the symphony.
"Michael, Metallica called. They'll do that concert you were talking about"
Michael "That was 10 years ago"

The song is shortened, BUT they did release the full unedited version as a B Side to The Memory Remains on a CD single

Speaking of amazing lyrics by James, have we done Bleeding Me yet? Especially the live S&M version from back in the late 90’s

This is my 2nd favorite Metallica song behind Fade to Black. One of their most underrated songs off their most underrated album in my opinion. This is one of about a dozen songs between S&M and S&M2 that I think the orchestra really adds depth to.

It just amazes me that you knew the tuning was e flat, love your vids. Just a guy that I likes jamming and it makes me want to learn more. I always use my ears, and I want to get back into reading too.

It took me a long time to appreciate this particular tune. I think it took this particular version. It's now one of the songs I wish I'll get to hear live from Metallica.

I was in high school when Load came out. I was disappointed the first week cause they cut their hair and all that "meant." I was a dumbass. Load is tied for my favorite Metallica album at this point. The more I hear it, the more the music hits. Emotionally, it's hard to beat.

It is indeed about Cliff. James has dodged answering whether it is or not directly, but the "smash the clock" line is the dead giveaway. The night Cliff died, James ripped a clock off his hotel room wall and threw it through the window.

You gotta check out Eric Clapton's performance of Layla from Royal Albert Hall 1991 with an orchestra, it was also led by Michael Kamen. Probably one of the best versions of Layla out there.
Another good one to check out from those concerts is "Edge of Darkness" which was a theme for a BBC TV show of the same name, with music written by Kamen and Clapton.

To me (and there are many) but a lot of Metallica's success over other metal bands is having clean vocals... and beyond... James is amazing. Check out some stuff from this summer. They've never sounded better

I knew you'd make this one special, Doc. You're the guy to navigate all this orchestral stuff. If you ever do a movie review, please make it "Amadeus". I'll be first in line.

Recently found your channel Doug. Really digging it. Came to the comments to give my support and to throw a band in to the reaction mix… and so I present: Ween. This is an unpredictable band with an excellent but underrated guitarist that covers a lot of different genres of music (primary influences of pfunk, Prince, dickie betts), even on the same album. I would steer your first listen to their more accessible albums like White Pepper (clear nod to the Beatles) or maybe Quebec. Best of luck with the channel.
