    You create a woman's sketch with watercolors (best way to test watercolors, a female portrait) so simple and "accessible" to everyone. Great work and thank you for the review.
    As for the 1.000.000 views, believe me you deserve it. Thank you Marty.

    I was searching for some earth tones two weeks ago and stumbled upon tubes of these paints in the clearance section of Hobby Lobby for 63 cents each! Needless to say, I bought one of every color they had!
    After I swatched them out this morning, I immediately went online and ordered 12 more colors! They are amazing and I am thrilled that they are so reasonably priced. I'm well on my way to having them all, lol 😂
    Thx for the review, Marty!

    Congratulations on the 1 milion views Marty.
    The review made me proud because I'm Dutch. This is just the studentgrade watercolour from Talens as you know. I started with the same watercolourbox and it's really cheap over here (only 15 euro's). To hear that it is up with the best, wow.

    • @owingsart
      @owingsart  8 років тому +8

      +roden70 Hi my friend - It performs far better than student grade watercolors in my tests. I am very impressed with the vibrancy and transparency. Surely if these are Student Grade, then other paint companies have a LOT of catching up to do. I salute the Dutch workers and craftspeople at Royal-Talens. So far everything I've tested from them has been superior. 15 Euro's would be about $17 USD and I paid $25 USD. Considering shipping, I think I got a great deal. Have a wonderful evening my friend and thank you for the note. - Marty

    yes Marty it did to some degree, thank you.
    What would be immensely useful/ interesting to me and I imagine many others is to see a side by side comparison of the student brands with the corresponding artist brand i.e schmincke academie with the Horadam , Winsor and Newton's cotman with the artist talents van Gogh with the Rembrandt's etc. I make this suggestion for your channel as I have heard of a lot of artists still using specific colours from the student line ( if they prefer a certain colour and/ or the colour is lightfast) even though they have 'upgraded' thefrugalcrafter -who I know is a buddy of yours- did one on the Lucas line of watercolours and it was great.

    Once again another great review Marty. We always do a family art project for the summer and this year I'm thinking watercolor journals with a paint box and pencil. I appreciate the quality and ratings review on these and it definitely will not brake the bank to add these to everyone's travel bag for the summer! I'm so excited for summer brake and to get the family out and about on some art adventures.

    25 USD.. it seems it became more expensive in US... I somehow got mine, the 12+3 pocket box for less than 13 Euros (like 12 euros something).

      Char Reign since many of the American paints cost so much more in Europe it makes sense that Van Gogh would costs more in the USA. Probably for the same reason.

    I bought a tube of this in Bangkok on holiday. Terre verte, W&N do it but in the professional range, pricey for my ability but great colour. Compares really well. Glad you get as much pleasure from doing as we we do watching.

    • @capbin146
      @capbin146 8 років тому

      +Owings Art Hi Marty, Oops I got it wrong it was sennelier terre verte, the v g was Naples yellow another colour I love for beaches and building facades. The watercolour supplies are limited there -masking fluid is almost impossible I tracked down one supplier with 3 bottles.
      Thais are generally creative so stationery and art supplies abound but probably due to wages etc not as big a selection but I have found some great bargains and it's a chance to experiment.
      I watched will terrell on UA-cam journaling, so bought some markers to try. Great cheap but you can do more with a small wc set.

    • @owingsart
      @owingsart  8 років тому

      Big C I love the Naples Yellow for the exact reasons, with one addition, they're great for midwestern grain fields. Love Will Terrell's vids.

    Really glad you like the idea. Yes Marty, definitely in real time please, as you usually do, only with the pigments or hues being compared directly adjacent to one another so that we can all clearly see any differences in their working properties and how they then dry. Thanks for adding this to your 'soon to do list' I for one really appreciate your reviews as they are always top- notch!

    Great review of a great product. The tubes are absolutely great. I have never used the VG pans. Funny when you spoke of relative size to phones. In the 90s it was see how small of a phone we can make. Then when the smartphone hit about 10 years ago, let's see just how large of a phone we can make and still get people to carry it.

      Another thing Marty, you can use the code CDPS at Blick, and get 25% off of non-sale and non-excluded items. I have used this code for a couple years now. Unfortunately, watercolors are generally excluded, but I noticed a few things on your invoice would have been 25% off.

    Thanks for mentioning about the white when mixing skintones. I have really been struggling with that and will definitely try that and see if that improves my jaundiced looking people!

    I started milling my own watercolors almost 60 years ago when gifted a stash of pigments. So I have been at it a very long time. Off and on as life has afforded me time. Retired 8 years ago and started seriously testing/ swatchhing watercolors. I have bought palettes or at least a dozen colors from every major brand and many hand milled . Just to let you know, I just gave the van Gogh to my great granddaughter. Sh is getting all of my paints to play with as she developes...i was far from impressed with these paints. Next she gets Turner with Chinese brushes and several how to ...when she decides whether she likes that style then some old Holland's. If that doesn't tell you what I think of these paints nothing will. Student grade.

    Congratulations on 1,000,000 views~! YAY! And woo! These Van Gogh paints look great! I just bought myself the Turner Watercolors that Lindsay uses in her livestreams. LOL I don't need anymore watercolor paints, but they were on sale and it's my birthday present to myself. XD
    Ohh! I love printmaking! I took three classes in college and I am so sad I can't do anymore etchings or monoprints at home since I don't have the printing press (or the acid to etch the copper plates)! I would love to see you use the Akua Print plates! Are they similar to plexi glass? I used to paint my monoprints on plexi and then print them on watercolor paper. Never etched plexi glass before though!

    • @owingsart
      @owingsart  8 років тому +1

      +starshinesoldier Hey can you give me any tips on etching? I'm just starting out and still really learning the process, that's why I wanted to start on plexiglass rather than copper or steel plates. I have a friend with a press :-)

    • @starshinesoldier
      @starshinesoldier 8 років тому

      +Owings Art Sure! Though I have never etched plexiglass before (only copper plates) so I don't know how much help I would be! ^^;
      You need to make sure your printing plate is as oil free as you can get it. (You can do that after your carved into the plexiglass, but before you ink it.) Dish soap is a great and cheap way to get the oils off. This way your inks/paint/watercolors will stick.
      If you are using the plate for a monoprint, it helps to scuff the side you are painting on with a fine sandpaper. That will give the paint something to grab on to. Also for monoprinting, if you are using watercolors, it helps to wait for the watercolors to be dry before you print them. that way they won't smudge. As long as your paper is a little damp, the paint should still transfer.
      Oh, and you should soak your paper for like... 1 to 3 minutes (for etching and monoprints, you can leave it for longer, in class we just left our paper in the sink and patted them dry just before printing) then when you are ready to print, pat the paper dry with clean towels.
      Since the plexi is clear you can put your sketch underneath it and use the plexi like tracing paper, but beware that there may be a little warping? (I'm not sure what you call that, but you get the same effect when you look through water?) Be sure to wash the plate after to get rid of the extra pencil lines, or you may accidentally get graphite on your prints. Though, that shouldn't be too bad, since they should erase off once the paper is dry.
      It helps to make templates so you know exactly were to place your printing plate and your paper. So trace the outline of your paper on a bigger sheet of paper and then trace your plate inside the outline. (if that makes sense?)
      With etching, it is the lines that you carve away that holds the ink, like a reverse stamp. (I am sure you already know that, lol) The deeper you carve, the darker your lines will be. You can get really cool shading and different tones with shallow and deep lines. Beware of any imperfections of your plate though, because those lines will show up when you're printing as well, but you can always carve over them or incorporate them into your drawing some how.
      When your are wiping the excess paint off, it helps to use the cheaper paper towels... like the kind you get at public bathrooms (they aren't as absorbent), and to wrap or tape the paper towels onto a flat surface, like an eraser or a block of wood. Otherwise you might accidentally wipe the paint out of your carved line as well.
      I cannot think of anything else that would be helpful at the moment... and my comment has gotten super long already! Anyways, hope this helps and if you have any questions I will try to answer them to the best of my ability!

The bad thing about the 24 set i saw from the photos was that 3-4 colours looked the same (browns or yellows). I will be using this set when im outside drawings places.

  • @Drumaier
    @Drumaier 5 років тому

    I'm building up a palette of good or excellent quality, 1 pigment colors that are lightfast and i found that van gogh has several of them. These are : Azo Yello light, madder lake deep, permanent red Light, prussian blue, phthalo Blue, blue Ultramarine, phthalo green and Quinacridone rose. Take notice that for a split primary palette you already have here one warm red, one cool red, one cool blue, one warm blue, and one cool or primary Yellow(azo light) . The only one you should get some where else is a warm yellow (for example cadmium or graham Indian yellow py101 if i remember correctly). Then you also have a one pigment Violet (pv19 as q. Rose) in the van gogh and a deep red (madder lake deep). And a deep blue (prussian). All these i named here are pigments listed for handprint as the top 40 pigments for lightfastness and other good qualities. The main drawback of van gogh, as far as i know are : 1_lack of one pigment choices for secondaries and terciaries,and also primaries since there are no cobalts, cerulean, cadmiums, or magenta 122 for example. 2_the pigment concentration is not as great as with the big boys. Now, given the fact that watercolor transparency is usually a desired thing, this lower concentration of pigment can not be that much of an issue. Is just that it will last you less a tube of van gogh that one of Daniel Smith or Rembrandt. But those cost much more so i think that even in the long run Van gogh will be cheaper.
    Another drawback of van gogh might be the handling, dispersion of the pigment but i'm not completely sure about this or if is related to all or what pigments in their line.

    Loved the glowing review of this...if you could pick, would you get the Van gogh WC of 12 half pans or Daler Rowley Aquafine WC of 24 half pans (both are student grade,sooo?)...or would you get them both (basically, are the different enough to justify getting both or just one set?
    Also, how do these paints compare to the Lukas Aquarell 1862 WC (are they just as good or not as good as the Lukas wc)...I'm asking bc I recently got the Lukas Studio WC in tube form and THEY WERE AMAZING...the colors practically jumped off the paper, that's how intense they were, especially if you compare them to the half pans (which I got too but hey, they were really cheap at that time)...I'm actually planning to give away the half pans to my aunt, who also likes to watercolor, bc the tube form was WAY more intense and vibrant than the pans. The pans were nice too, just not as nice as the tubes. Long story short, that's why I ask if they compare to the Lukas brand. Quick question, why are tube watercolors better than pans?
    Finally, if you had to pick between the Van gogh 12 half pans for $20 or 12 tubes (10 mL) for $45, which one would you go for (basically, do they re-wet after being dried, etc). Thanks so much for the review and keep up the excellent work!! Oh, btw, the portrait you did with these paints is gorgeous!! It looked very abstract yet realistic at the same time (plus WC portraits are just do die for!!).

    • @owingsart
      @owingsart  6 років тому

      Greetings - I would go with with Rowley Aquafine over the Van Gogh, but others will argue for Van Gogh. Lukas is better in most every aspect. Tube paint will almost always be more intense than pans. The tubes are liquid and don't have to be re-liquified with water, which dilutes them. So it seems to a new person like the tubes are more intense. However, if you mixed the pans with a little water and let the pigment build, it should be equally intense.
      As for the pans versus tubes, it really depends if you do more field or studio painting. If you only paint in your home (studio) and don't really go out much, I prefer the mobility and ease of transport of pans. I know many artists who take tubes into the field though, so it isn't a hard and fast rule, it's just what I like. Hope this helps you! ~Marty

    • @owingsart
      @owingsart  8 років тому +2

      +Jane Kirkwood (Artsy Otternut) Hi Jane! Thanks for the question. I would say the Sennelier are hands down better paints. The Senn's have a luminosity and glow to them, especially when layered and I will always love them for that. They go down so smoothly and effortlessly, they are simply a joy to use. These Van Gogh paints are really great, but they are more precise, more exacting, like German wc's. Hard to explain that, but if you use wc's long enough, you start to notice those things. The French made Sennelier's are softer, glowing, like seeing a meadow of flowers in the misty light of morning. :-) - Marty

    Another brilliant review, Marty. Really enjoyed this one. - Just out of curiosity; do you own/use a graphic tablet? If so, perhaps you could do a review of that. I'm using a really old Wacom Intuos 3, which has served me well through the years, but am contemplating an upgrade.

      If you can afford it, or want to sell your current computer set up, you won't get much better than ipad pro and apple pencil. It is even touted better than the acclaimed Wacom Cintiq HD, better response time. I haven't tried a Cintiq though, only tried the pro and pencil (I know someone who has them.) However there is a good review on here comparing the two. Other than that an upgraded to what you have now would be worth looking into.

      +Kyomii Brown Thanks for the tips. I don't think I'll go for an iPad Pro, though, as it runs iOS I wouldn't be able to use full versions of the program's that I need [Adobe suite etc] and the apps available, while perfectly adequate for quick sketches, aren't enough for the 3D-modelling I intend to do. Also I'm not sure how the pressure sensitivity of the iPad Pro compares with a made-for-purpose Wacom tablet.

      +Scout [né Anonymous] Hi Anonymous - Yes, I own a Intous myself with a MacBook Pro. Works great for me when I'm doing comic illustration, but I really prefer the old school tactile touch of paper and paint, graphite, ink... If I were going to upgrade though I'd def check out the Cintiq based on my great experiences with Wacom. I haven't tried the iPad Pro and Apple pencil as Kyomii suggests, but I'd be open to that as well if Apple stuff weren't so expensive. :-) I've also used some Autodesk products for 3D modeling, such as Inventor and Maya, but those are really industrial grade tools. :-)

    Is it possible to use Van Goghs refills for Winsor and Newton palettes? Will they fit?

    if you go to dickblick's website these are listed under professional or artists wc's, but some say they are just student quality. What do you think Marty?

      On DickBlick, Van Gogh's watercolor is listed under student quality, but Van Gogh's watercolor sets are under professional, weird.
      But I'm sure the Van Gogh ones are student quality as Royal Talens has a line of artist quality watercolor called Rembrandt

      +Quyen-kun idk but the pocket box is listed under the professional wc sets. im not sure but the price is tempting compared to other artists quality paints.... if it REALLY is one. thats why i was asking marty lol

      +electrabot they have pigment of student quality, but as you can see in the youtube the colours and lightfastness are comparable with the artist one s! Rembrand has artist quaility pigments.

      +electrabot Yes, I noticed that as well and although it is confusing, these perform as good or better than some Artist grade wc's. I think they're really outstanding. I salute the Dutch Craftspeople.

    Too funny. Like other person I found these at Hobby Lobby for $1.76 per so I bought several of the colors I didn't have or like violet colors I couldn't mix the way I wanted. I thought I was being original until I read the comments. But thanks for vid it was helpful.
