Finally, a much needed comparison of these paints, I found it very helpful. I have a couple of old Rembrandt tubes and just bought a Van Gogh lavender tube, and wasn't sure if I should buy more because of the lower price. For me, the fact that the VG colors were more opaque makes me hesitant, at least for mixing staples, but I'll probably pick up a few fun colors. Thanks so much for this review!!
You're welcome! I use Van Gogh paints a lot in my art journal and illustrations - everything non-painterly, so to speak. And I have to say that I've never had trouble with it being a wee more opaque than Rembrandt. If you're looking to buy the fun colors, you might want to await my Rembrandt reviews...I'm going to be updating the Van Gogh and Rembrandt videos the coming weeks to give a full overview and I will speak about the fun colors in more detail.
The true comparison should be their layering and overall paint abilities. Recently I did an experiment with student grade layering techniques vs artist grade. I waited for the base layers to dry completely before adding the top layers. I had a set of Prima (student grade) watercolors and the layers were a disaster as the first layer of paint dissolved, mixed with the top layer, and made a total mess. My Van Gogh, also student grade, had a few colors mix with the top layer but this was barely noticeable. Of course the Rembrandt (along with Sennelier, Schmincke, & Daniel Smith) paint layered beautifully. The artist grade paints seem to be easier to work with in general. Using artist grade paints eliminate the battle of cheap paints and paper. I do agree with you in that Van Gogh is the absolute best student grade paints on the market (as far as I can tell). Great video.
Thank you, Violetta. And you're right. It's what I mean when I say Rembrandt is better for painterly techniques, but I'll specify the layering aspects of the paint in another video because it's important, indeed. Although I wouldn't agree with you perse that artist grade paints are easier to work with in general. That takes a little knowledge of and experience with pigments. But once you have that, it's a winner for painterly techniques. Absolutely.
Colours like Burnt Umber,Sepia,Paynes Grey, I lke Van Gogh WAY more than Rembrandt. However,on Cerulean blue and some others,Rembrandt has the better colour. That's why, I made a mixed palette, that not only is perfect having the best colours from both, but also it's affordable and not very far to other great brands! I'm going to order a couple of their 110 series Red Sable brushes, because something tell me,they are going to be a great value too!!
Finaly, I didn't order their 110 series, but their 100,because they are some of the best Kolinsky brushes you can get! Some, insist that they are the best! They are very similar to the Raphael 8404 or the Da Vinci Maestro series 10. Closer to the Raphael design, but the fit and finish, is closer to Da Vinci! They are excellent brushes. From what I've seen from their 110, they are also very good, however, since the price in Europe is almost the same for either 110 or 100, I'd advise to go straight to 100!! I can only confirm, their HUGE value.Fantastic brushes!! In my opinion, top3 with the brands I mentioned. No4 I place Escoda and No5 Pinceton!@@MandyvanGoeije
Love Van Gogh as well! And I’m also expanding my collection and only less than 10 missing 😄 I’m really looking forward to try and explore Rembrandt watercolors so much
Great comparison, I am a fan of both lines so this was an interesting watch. I have always considered VG to be the best student paint, it can easily give artist grade paints a run for the money. I do find the only real difference in them is that the Rembrandt do layer a little easier than the VG which is expected if the have more filler in them.
Thank you! And yes, exactly, Rembrandt layers a lot better. It's what I mean when I say Rembrandt is better for painterly techniques, but I'lll specify that in another video.
perfect review, and very useful - thank you very much ! can you please tell me if rembrandt get as mushy as van gogh ? i guess someone else might call it creamy - it can be enjoyable but i find i waste a lot of paint inadvertently, and i'd be scared to burn through the more expensive paint too quickly if they have the same texture. (i'm using van gogh sold in half pans, not the tube ones.)
Thank you for your excellent presentation. I love my Van Gogh watercolors.
Gorgeous comparison, it really helped me choose the pigments to upgrade and which to keep as student grade. Thank you for sharing!❤
I love how you compared the colours. I’ve found your VG vs R videos very informative. Thank you!
Thank you so much. And you're welcome.
In your video I finally found all the information I needed, thank you very much for sharing.😊

How do you like the Red Sable Brushes? I do'nt think I own any of that line, but I'm curious. :-)

Van Gogh is really great! And Rembrandt and Van Gogh make a great combination...it will be a great expanding on your collection.

You only need to swipe once or twice with a wet brush. No need to pre wet or dig in the paint.
Hello, Azo yellow dark is from Rembrandt 248 and mono pigment PY110 ?
Hello Peter, yes, that's correct.
perfect comparison, thank you very much!
Thank you, Loky Loky. You're welcome! :-)

Thank you, Sabiha, You're welcome!
Grumbacher Academy is also an excellent student watercolor paint.
I've heard that SO often. The thing is that it's really unavailable here in the Netherlands. So I've never tried it.
Great video 👏
Thanks!
You're so iconic
Lots of talking, count me out!
