Northern NY and upstate (*true* upstate) NY are two entirely different worlds. Coming from New England, NY is so big there are actually cities that are hours apart that most people in places like MA or VT don't even know exist (like Binghamton). I got to work a lot in upstate NY and grew to really love the place. There are whole different regions (not like on the New England states' maps): the Finger Lakes Region, the Adirondacks, the Hudson Valley, the Catskills, the Southern Tier Region, the Capitol Region, and whatever that really flat farm area is between the Adirondacks and Canada. Beautiful state as long as you stay *far* away from the southernmost part, aka the Metropolis.
The area between the Adirondacks and Canada is mostly St.Lawrence County which has the last city north of Syracuse in NY being Ogdensburg right up on the Canadian border. The rest are just towns and villages.
@@NorthernForester Thanks. I've worked in Messina, Malone, Potsdam, Watertown, and Plattsburgh. However, I do agree with those who say they don’t like cuomo because from what I’ve seen he seems like an ass. For instance, he renamed the tappen zee bridge to the Mario cuomo bridge. It’s a dick move in my opinion cause he takes this important piece of infrastructure and names it after his father. In my opinion very selfish, but how do you guys feel about not only the bridge and cuomo, but New York in general? Also where does mappy get off prank calling people? Also didn’t he have a son? But he is quite rude for wasting that persons time.

Well for me, and I think just about anyone else from Long Island and the 5 boroughs, anything above The Bronx is upstate. They are an entirely different breed up there.
Not all parts of the Bronx are bad. It's not the 1970s anymore. Parts of the northern and eastern Bronx are nice. I live in a chill neighborhood here in The Bronx.

Some of this was accurate but most of this is not as accurate, especially when you said the Bronx is a terrible place to live, some of the Bronx is very city suburban and beautiful, otherwise this was mostly inaccurate
I am pretty sure the maker/writer of this video did not grow up in a big city. None of the downside mentioned (crowded, crime, overpriced) is something native NYer care about, because that's what we grew up in. And the video doesn't mention the upsides of living in a major city - 24/7 stores/restaurants/bars, walk everywhere, parks with people, finding people for every hobby.

Hello Nick, could please do a video about Unboxing Connecticut. I'm planning to move out of New York, and Connecticut seems appealing to me. Thank you.
I was born and raised in Queens, NY. I love Manhattan. NY is too expensive now to live. I now reside in Georgia. I'm getting adjusted but I want to move to a state close to NYC later on. Any suggestions on what is a good state to move to close to NYC later that's not too expensive?
I grew up in Long Island (north shore, wealthy, Jewish) and I would say people are half conservative and half liberal. I know a lot of my friends who are Jewish and rich, who’s parents are rich and liberal (no where near sjw level). I switch between Republican and Democrat depending on what term it is and who the presidential candidate is. If you look at recent studies, a higher percentage of Phd’s and those with master’s degrees are liberal rather than conservative which is a switch from the 80’s and 90’s. I thought that was interesting because one would think liberals are young, dumb college kids or poor inner city dwellers; however, that isn’t true anymore.
One of my favorite places is liberal. Its the Oregon coast like Cannon Beach and Coos Bay. If i could afford to live there, thats where id be. For the beauty, relaxation, and of course the sound of the waves crashing.
The best kept secret in NYC is Broad Channel. I had the privilege of growing up there, imagine living in a small town with all of that initials....now picture that it's on its own island and still just a 45 minute to ide on the A train to midtown Manhattan.
Let me guess! The 25,000 dollar pyramid theme song from the 80's in the beginning and at the end... not REALLY sure but it sounds like a movie "special" intro on tv theme song of the late 70's to 80's? Very informative video and entertaining!
New York City is a beautiful place with a lot to do, but living there would suck, mainly due to the crime and expenses. I mean, if you're a tourist, it's great, but living there it goes downhill within the first few months.
Where I live now in Hollywood, Florida it takes me less than 10 minutes to get to work, 10 minutes to the beach and 5 minutes to the nearest Publix, Target and many other stores and restaurants. If I were to wake up in New York and just look outside of the window at the traffic craziness I'd probably jump (since I'm sure it would probably be in a high rise) : l
@@piranhasforscissors The safety here in NYC comes also courtesy of the fact that there ARE a lot of people- And since we're famous for being "the city that never sleeps" it's safe to walk around alone at 1:00 a.m. or even later almost anywhere from the lower tip of the island all the way up to about 96th Street. There are always pedestrians walking around outside, strolling, going into or coming out of restaurants, walking their dogs, sitting on stoops, etc. which itself is a big deterrent to criminals who prefer quieter, more deserted areas that don't have densely populated pedestrian-friendly areas.

NYC is awesome, great place to live. The city is a show, but you have to remember to pace yourself here. Upstate is gorgeous. We have great state Parks for hiking and back to nature. Upstate is reall underrated. Most of Long Island is yucky suburbs until you get to eastern Suffolk County. Staten island sucks.
It used to be the coolest city in the world until the late 1990s. Now its sterilized version of Disney World that cost a fortune with smelly hipster trash and trust fund babies everywhere
@Jerry Silk Because its the financial capital of the world. With largest city population and world view in the USA. Number one pick for Terrorism. If you want boring cities go to Pittsburgh.
Most of the time, these Unboxed videos appear to be well considered, but this one generally misses the point. NYS consists of over a half dozen distinct areas, although some of these are somewhat similar. Metro New York, Mid-Hudson and Adirondack areas, Central New York, the Finger Lakes, Western New York and Northern New York. There's even smaller distinct areas within the larger ones, i.e., the Catskills and the Thousand Islands region. And, the Southern Tier extends through Central and Western New York as well as the Finger Lakes. Some upstate regions are essentially rural, others are a rural and urban mix, given the presence of Albany, Utica, Syracuse, Binghamton, Rochester and Buffalo. There are quite a few college/university towns upstate that are lively, vital places to live. Finally, the economic conditions in parts of upstate New York have improved in the past 20 years due to efforts to improve the urban areas, enhanced tourism, an influx of affluent retirees, and, most recently, movement of backoffice operations and at-home workers from more populous regions of the US Northeast.
I think the city in Georgia pronounces Albany the way you did. The state capital of NY is pronounced All-bany. No biggie. I love your videos bro and I love your snarky, attitude laden narrative.
You say often in your videos "downtown" NY. There is a downtown Brooklyn but not Manhattan. In Manhattan it is a direction not a neighborhood. It is called lower Manhattan. I cant relate when you say "downtown" NY! Unless you mean all of Manhattan. It does not have a downtown area like other cities. Businesses are all over especially midtown. Again it is a direction not a neighborhood!
Does this poster even live in NY? I'm in upstate. I'm about 15 minutes away from Albany, in a pretty decent small town/city? Called Watervliet. I grew up like 40 minutes away from here, in a town called Berlin, otherwise known as Petersburg (they cross in and out of each other, it's confusing) and out there, it's beautiful country scenery, and you could access bennington VT in about 20ish minutes... both areas, where I live and where I grew up aren't very far apart, and yet are COMPLETELY different places. And idk what in the hell this guy is talking about as far as winter LOL it was 60° today. Now that's obviously not every winter day, but in the last 15-20 or so years, winter has become pretty mediocre here in the "city" by city, I mean where I live, near Albany.... upstate New Yorkers basically refer to any place that's not the country rural area as a "city".LOL It confuses people that are actually from NYC. Anyway, up where I grew up, it's on Taborton Mountain, so there's always snow in the winter term up there, yet, go 20-30 minutes back here to Watervliet, and we haven't seen snow for Christmas, minus 2018 , in many years. Temperatures are an average of 35. There are of course colder days/weeks, but it's hit or miss and usually we can get through most the winter with no snow and above freezing (over 32 degrees) Hell, even in January (and seemingly almost every January since my 15 yr old daughter was born, I remember what we call a "freak week" of like 60-70° weather! We just had it last month in January. I can't remember how long it lasted, but it was close to 70° 🤣 The crime rate here in the town I live in is almost none besides petty stuff like kids taking off with bicycles, and it's practically ZERO up in the mountain I grew up on. Now if you go just over the bridge to Troy, or to Albany or Schenectady, that changes QUICK. But even in all 3 of those areas, different sides of town can be like night and day. But overall, in this ENTIRE area, I have never personally been mugged or been a victim of a crime. And no one I know has been. The worst problem we have in the urban areas are drug crimes and for the last 7-10 years or so, losing people I have personally known to this fucking heroin epidemic. But I guess if I had to choose, I'd keep my ass planted right here over worrying about shootings like it was a lifestyle like in Harlem, NYC, for instance. Just saying. ...you could NEVER "unbox" The enigma that is the ENTIRE state of NY in even a month worth of videos🤣 But hey, I appreciate your efforts, anyway. I just thought I'd give my 2 cents from your NOT so stereotypical New Yorker. Oh and I pay $750/month for a huge 3 bedroom flat. PS- I have NEVER squashed a cockroach in my life! Fucking gross!

New York City in the 80s looked like this graffiti covered subway car. New York City today looks like this shows empty subway car I’ve never actually seen an empty subway car in New York City except in my dreams so thank you for the visual.
NYC has some exquisite and diverse architecture. It's frigging beautiful. The housing cost is the only eyesore tbh.
I've enjoyed drives along Rt 11 and 11a, but loved drives through the Adirondacks even more, which I took to get to many of these places, especially traveling through Keene Valley, along with Long Lake, Tupper Lake, and Saranac Lake. I miss those drives.
Facts the city is like another state
I love these unboxing videos. Hey Nick can you do Connecticut next tuesday ? If you want to
I will soon Justin :)
I think you'll have to wait until Wednesday
Try to start unboxing each province and territory of Canada! And unbox some European countries while you're at it. Love the content!
Wow so many requests Daniel!
@@NickJohnson Yet he is right. Your presentation is punchy and interesting. Don't know how you would do that, though, since these are foreign countries for you.
Awesome video. As the old commercial used to say: "I love New York...for a great vacation."
I'm seeing a lot of people ragging on Nick for pronunciations and information. This was one of the first unboxing videos and he did a pretty good job considering he didnt get help from any of us nyers like he gets with his newer videos.
I enjoyed it. I wish it was longer but it's still a good video. Ppl need to relax.
Yeah people
Also New York state is so diverse and you have to divide the state in sections. It's not an easy state to do.
@@NickJohnson I wasn't nagging you I was just voicing the harsh truth and like the truthful facts you mentioned New York state Sucks .

I miss New York, it can be a sad płace, especially upsate, but there is a beautiful charm to it.
I’m a New Jersey resident and I love New York and the city itself. I love the city cause of its culture, entertainment, food, and much more. Heck I was even born in Manhattan.
Stun Mappy is just having fun, and yes, he has three kids but is expecting another soon. Is it his though?
New York publishes my favorite Garfield books I love those books
You should do an unboxing puerto rico lol, ik it's not a state just a territory but still would be interesting

@@jimmorrison3715 lool true

His stereotype was off they don't smell like Curry
But let me tell you something it is not always very fun to take a cab in New York City in the summer when a lot of people who drive cabs don't believe in deodorant for one reason or the other Curry would be an improvement
Well for me, and I think just about anyone else from Long Island and the 5 boroughs, anything above The Bronx is upstate. They are an entirely different breed up there.

There are more New Yorkers in Florida than there are in New York.
That's true a lot of my friends who end up having families or retired people from New York end up moving to Florida.

Martín County, Florida perhaps?
John Daker You must mean the Martin County área near Stuart
Nick, Hopefully you wore face paint when you sang NY Groove. 😂
I did not haha
Some of this was accurate but most of this is not as accurate, especially when you said the Bronx is a terrible place to live, some of the Bronx is very city suburban and beautiful, otherwise this was mostly inaccurate
Great video! Been to Little Italy, Greenwich village & used to attend the West Point football games .. grest tailgating❗
AGREE!💯
He grew up in San Bernado California
Well, at least I'm not moving to Manhattan and Brooklyn since it is Way Too Expensive. No Way.
Daniel Bazalar Check out Manhattan, Kansas or Brooklyn, Iowa. Both are less expensive options. The former is a K State town and the latter, sad to say, is a farming community, that probably beat NYC, as far as murder rate per capita.
Just move to Rochester ny
The Bronx is your friend then
You can always move to jersey like across the Hudson in Hoboken or Jersey City
If you were smart you would live in Queens

I was born and raised in Queens, NY. I love Manhattan. NY is too expensive now to live. I now reside in Georgia. I'm getting adjusted but I want to move to a state close to NYC later on. Any suggestions on what is a good state to move to close to NYC later that's not too expensive?
You jumped from Westchester to Albany! You skipped the best, most picturesque part of the state……the mid-Hudson Valley!
Oops
how dare you accuse us of having Dunkin Donuts. This is Tim Hortons country.
I lived in NYC its pretty acurate and upstate its pretty accurate...too
LMFAO the way you pronounced Suffolk and Nassau
Interesting. I also am not tied down to one party (haven't sold my soul). I vote for whoever i think is good at that time.
One of my favorite places is liberal. Its the Oregon coast like Cannon Beach and Coos Bay. If i could afford to live there, thats where id be. For the beauty, relaxation, and of course the sound of the waves crashing.
Great points Elizabeth!
Another Gem Nick
you say yuck to the Bronx but alot of people are moving here now
Because housing is cheap
I love the Bronx. They have great ethnic food. People who come to the city, and only do stuff in Manhattan, missed out on what NYC is really about.
this whole review is stuck in the 70s, the Bronx has nice places and not so nice places just like anywhere.
The best kept secret in NYC is Broad Channel. I had the privilege of growing up there, imagine living in a small town with all of that initials....now picture that it's on its own island and still just a 45 minute to ide on the A train to midtown Manhattan.
You definitely need to have a reason for being here. If you don't, there are better places you could be in.
Thanks for 8:49! Gave me a good laugh!
Let me guess! The 25,000 dollar pyramid theme song from the 80's in the beginning and at the end... not REALLY sure but it sounds like a movie "special" intro on tv theme song of the late 70's to 80's? Very informative video and entertaining!
Thanks Dan. That was the ABC Saturday Night Movie intro/outro song
And that $25,000 Pyramid song is stuck in my head now 😎
Chicken wing jab had me week, did Buffalo dirty. 😆 🤣
New York City is a beautiful place with a lot to do, but living there would suck, mainly due to the crime and expenses. I mean, if you're a tourist, it's great, but living there it goes downhill within the first few months.
I’m from Rochester and I feel like nyc is much safer
@@jacobwood1707 New York City has some dangerous parts but luckily they're out of the way.
Is it safer than Buffalo, though?
Also NYC is such an unsanitary city. Lots of rats there. Constant construction there, and lots of noise.
NYC is a bit intimidating for this Midwest girl, but it’s a cool place-rural NY is super cool too!
I never heard anyone say Albany like that😭 it's more like olbany

The biggest problem with Albany is Andrew Cuomo!

Hey. I think you clumped a lot of parts of NY into upstate. Rochester Buffalo Syracuse and Albany are all similar and are far from rural. Suburbs are nice. Cities are ghetto. I think you should do another video on upstate NY, Western NY, Catskill regions. A lot of stuff there.

NYC is awesome, great place to live. The city is a show, but you have to remember to pace yourself here. Upstate is gorgeous. We have great state Parks for hiking and back to nature. You should do an unboxing on each borough if NYC.
I live in upstate NY and I agree with you lol
Good to know Luke. Merica up there.
"They are very liberal, unfortunately" 😂😂 I love it
I think the city in Georgia pronounces Albany the way you did.
Thankyou for listening to my last comment your videos are great
No prob John. Thanks for watching!
