I love that despite how heartbreaking the message of this song is (at least in my interpretation), Thom is smiling all the way through. He clearly enjoys playing this piece (I think it's one of their best).
He did say in an interview that he wants Radiohead to be remembered with this song. Although, to be fair, he said that more than 10 years ago so he may have changed his opinion.
at that point was a mantra for him since the ok computer in 1997 and 1998 put him in a depressive state and was like a scream for i dont want to be here this is not happening for me it was like a way to reduce the anxiety and fear that thom was experimenting at that time
I love how Thom wails at the end. One of the greatest singers ever, singing one of the greatest, most emotionally powerful songs ever written/recorded.
This song played in my head as I listened to my mum's heartbeat slow.....slow......stop. how I wished I wasn't there. It wasn't happening. But it was. This song envelops me in sadness. I wallow in that desolation and I welcome it. It means she was real. She was my home.
Frank Micucci : you know, ‘Pink Flody’, David Gilmoru, Roger Watesr.... they had albums called ‘The Wall” ( those two “L”s are switched....) and “Dark side of the Mono”
Perhaps my favorite Radiohead song (though it's so hard to choose)... to me, this describes exactly what it's like to be in emotional shock/grief, an emotion (or lack thereof) I think everyone can relate to. When I first learned my dad had a heart attack (he survived and is healthy now), when I learned my online friend had died, when I got into a minor car accident... everyone has moments like that when they just don't know how to react and don't want to process or believe what just happened, so they just pretend like it didn't happen and close off all of their emotions. Different people react to stress/trauma differently, but at least I know for myself and I'm sure a lot of other people go into "I'm not here, this isn't happening" mode until they're better able to process what just happened.
Even though Thom's voice is still utterly amazing, I think it was most powerful during the ending of Ok through Amnesiac stage. He also looked the best during this phase to me personally. If I ever get a chance to see them live I know it will be the most special thing I've ever been through.
Totally how I'm feeling. I struggle with depression and also have BPD so I find life difficult a lot of the time. My dad died about 3 weeks ago after an 8-9 month battle with bowel cancer. My mum has had to go into a care home as she can't look after herself. She has dementia and MS. I ended a relationship recently as my ex had a condition that made being together very stressful and upsetting. With the stress of my parents I couldn't cope with her problems as well. Now feel utterly lost and this song just keeps going around in my head. I've struggled with depression pretty much all my life but for your parents not to be there to love you unconditionally right when you need that the most is the most tortuous feeling. I don't really know why I'm saying this here. I know there will be unkindness shown I just need for someone to know how bad things are. And sneaking up on you In. This way is all I seem to have
Thank you all for your support and kindness. Things are still very difficult but I've settled down a bit since leaving my comment. Best wishes to you all
I love the facts that he walks with such an absense its actually like he's visualising himself being invisible on that stage completely alone singing his heart out.
A timeless masterpiece. Britain does this sound so well. Love Radiohead and other darker soulful sounds from UK acts like Massive Attack, Portishead, Unkle, Tricky, Allflaws

I once fell in love with a person, I loved her and I wanted her to be the woman of my life. Always on the trips to her house, I thought if it would be good to remember her or bad after a while. I lived in a relationship where there was more love for me, that was not good for me, but I, blind with love, did not wear that... After a while this song broke me down a lot, for remembering her and our moments together... Today I take comfort in knowing that I truly loved someone and that I had good times with her.
In some way, the restless crowd adds to the beauty of this performance. You can hear all the needless noise that Thom talks of escaping in this song. I don't know, the crowd's nonsense made his solitude up there all the more heartbreaking to me.
Your comment just shows how much Ed is underrated. He creates a lot of the ambient sounds with his guitar and pedals that give Radiohead that distinct sound. He contributes a lot, but it's not the "sexy" stuff like Jonny, so he goes unnoticed.

For me, the bass line makes this song. It's the cherry on top.
It’s a shame that Colin gets practically zero camera/screen time here. He contributes so much to their sound
The bass actually really forms the melody. It’s not just the cherry it’s the most important part of the instrumentation.
