Interesting to see on almost every test there's an initial suspension and tire compression, when the tire rebounds it continues compressing the shock (and I assume inertia within the system); then there's a moment where the system goes static as the tire begins to compress again, finally there is the full compression of the shock. I suppose this speaks A LOT to tire pressure, unsprung mass and damping. Would be really cool to see if it's possible to eliminate the phenomenon, and then test the effectiveness of application to true trail situations to see if, say, traction is improved. Wonder if a foam core that compresses under initial increase of tire pressure, but takes a second or so to "re-inflate" could work as damping for the tire to minimise the bouncing effect.
They pump up the tire to a higher pressure and run inserts when making these vids. Under normal circumstances this strange behavior, hurting the eyes of people who understand what they are watching, should not occur. Compression damping of the shock is in parts rebound damping for the tire. With tires blown up to volleyball pressures there is nothing it can do ot compe with the carnage.
b
Josh, I like your analysis. Do you think the front fork rebound looks a bit too fast in most of these? I think having more rebound damping would be easier on the ability to keep control. And easier on his back. Look how he has to compensate for the front fork rebound shooting up whilst his body is still moving down. A more fluid movement would be better I think. Great vid. I watched it a few times at half speed.
I think alot of what is being seen here is also the riders weight transfer during the landing.
It appears some of that my be due to the rider hitting the brakes upon landing

Hell! Yeti absorbed all the impact and more 0:28
next step: hardtail
the spindrift, slash and nomad all looked the smoothest with minimal amounts of Jason buckling. the Spur for the short travel looked fairly smooth too.
yasss not bullshit talky talky. just what we're all here for
1:22 Man, he beat those forks like they owed him money.
The coolest thing on this video is how the leg muscles tense up as soon as the bicycle hits the ground.
The music makes this so much more epic.
Remarkable how chain stays on.
Looks like some bikes barely survived this!
Shocking to see some super hyped bikes bottoming out in this weird (alternating front to back) ,stop motion like way .
Interesting how the SB115 suspension works. The shock compresses all the way before the swing arm moves thru it’s travel with the final bit of travel being the shock itself pivoting downward.
man that flex in the fox 36 @_@
wow, that looked brutal
Looks like the fork is gonna snap on the grim donut
Interesting how most of the tires squashed so much, many to the rims. Air pressure is important...
Great engineering in the different suspensions of today's bikes!
This is just making me sad. You have 28 full suspension bikes. I cant even afford a full suspension one. My bike is like 6 yrs old but you can change them almost every day of a month. You have to appreciate how much you have fr man
The channel is from a website including a shop, so it's not a private guy, it's a company
Most of the bottom-out prone shocks are sizes from 200mm and 190mm rear shocks.
This guy bottoming out a bike flat
Me: who can barely bottom my bike out on a six foot jump
The most insane piece of the bike is the wheels. How are they not bending with those little spokes.
This reminds me of this old MTB that my dad welded into a chopper bike.
I didn't realize how much the front forks actually flexed.
You can see the spokes at the bottom of the wheel getting loose.
From a full sized bike to a mini bike in seconds...
Thumbnail looks like a cool cruiser.
Just one question: How can you afford all this expensive bikes! 😮
Most of us struggle to get a single one!
And here's my front suspension can't even reach half
You can see the pain in his eyes on the Kona hardtail
I'm the 888th comment here
The grim donut can already be classified as a downhill bike just by putting a downhill fork on it
i noticed that you hace a garmin instinct. could you make aq video about that? btw really nice video, it is suprising to see the tiresbecome flat, but not pop.
So i guess the better ones are where the tyre sufferes less squeze ?
This hurts my knees just watching this... especially 2:29 given I just tore my ACL and Meniscus's
me loking at flat tire presures
wooww and they don't give me one? 🙏. they even have to spare ☺️
Would love to see a focus jam 6.9 drop.
1:33 looks like Trek Remedy 8. The rear tire did not compress to rim. Seems like a great system
I see now it’s the slash. How much difference is their in rear suspension between this and Remedy 8
Your tires are almost flat!
Put some air into them!
Why is there no "chain stabilizer\soothing" on bicycles?
Can you do one with walmart bikes for comparison
Ah ok, now i know why my chain is always soooo dirty 😳
Just look at the tires
kona honzo looked painful to land
The Tires wrinkle on impact
The best suspension is still the legs. Best engineering ever.
True
i'm getting a rigid mtb
@@acyutanandadas1326 hard tail is better
But for many small bumps when speeding around a berm or something your legs are shit at absorbing the bumps when a we'll set up air fork can easily smoothen it. But in most cases Ur right
Until you dislocate it.

I'd be great to know the tire pressures. It seems that the rear pressure is consistently too low
They are mountain bikes. I’m pretty sure they are meant to be soft to have adequate traction. Further, you only see the second after the initial shock, during which they may not have returned to their normal shape.
Crazy to see how short the wheelbase gets on some of these when compressed. The Hightower specifically was wild to watch.
Kind of a disappointing design, considering all the hype and the price for one of those...
that significant forward motion of the rear wheel can't be a good thing
High pivot suspension suddenly makes sense

Worried the Grim Donut would snap
ua-cam.com/video/WZCDC8ynUbw/v-deo.html
Time to bring back Josh bender
ua-cam.com/video/j5Fzuhlst98/v-deo.html
Thought it would snap the fork
Frame won't snap if it's designed that way. I was worried about that Lyrik fork 😬 the stanchions could've snapped in half 😬😬
It's interesting to see how some bikes bottom out so quickly. The single pivot and short travel bikes look especially like they bottom out as soon as you hit the ground
Most of these go to half compression when just pedaling around lmao. Anything more than a 3ft drop and top tier DH bikes bottom out from the factory. Needs them WAY oversprung even for a lightweight rider.
Cannondale and S-Works was most DEFINITELY the very BEST
My gawd the grim looked like it’s head tube was gonna just say “bye bye”

Me: back to reality of check how broke i am af.

Realized I was cringing while watching this. 😬
I found myself more focused on Jason's face/grimace. He's definitely taking one for the team.
if this isn't the most satisfying thing in the world, i don't know what is.
I know right... I went a full two minutes as if hypnotized 😂🤣😂 mouth agape
the sound of skateboards snapping
It is but then I realize I could only afford 2of the 28 bikes and it is no longer satisfying
DH edition would be more satisfying.
Nice shot video but to me this was very painful to watch.
*cries in non adjustable coil fork*
The Propain suspension was so beautiful to watch, it's so interesting compared to the cookie-cutter designs seen in most of the rest.
agreed propain definitely stood out for the better
Super interesting video. Surprising how many of the forks bind up before actually bottoming out. There are obviously a lot of issues with the drive train and suspension. Something to look forward to in the near future I'm sure. I also know why it's so easy to throw a chain without a chain guide...
2:34 this Salsa
Can you please make a edition with Downhillbikes? Could be interesting
2:17 dayum that yeti looks clean!!!
Take it with a gain of salt. All depends on suspension settings and rider/bike speed and positions on impact.
2:42 Finally some harcore hardtails in these vids
More hard tails please
Check out the flex in the head tube on that chromo Norco
Lets goooo
Is the air less in the tyres ?
How in the world does the head tube/fork of the grim doughnut not just snap straight off?
ua-cam.com/video/j5Fzuhlst98/v-deo.html
Right !
Anyone Watching in 0.25x ?😂
I find the rear shock placement on the giant trance so cool for some reason
Me thinking all the time: "I'm sure I could break one of these" :D
Thanks for putting the most important bike of the year first! Pinkbike got their priorities straight!
@@vLef1 You can see that headtube just waiting to snap off 😂
@@vLef1 and comfortable as fuck and stable as fuck.
Grim Donut was the only bike whose chain hit the floor
can't say I enjoy the way some chains spank the floor, most probably bringing up sand/grit and then nicely crushing it all in around the cassette and sprocket, great footage! 👍
If only there was a solution to keep your chain from getting your chain from getting dirty?
Funny thing is that there is?
But would make all your gearing parts last longer, so you are not allowed to do that?
@@Aljonone1 🤣 good call
@@Aljonone1 If there's a solution, please provide a link.
@@marcalvarez4890 chain waxing mate. Oz cycles has a whole load of stuff on it. Basically great on anything that isn't endless rain
I think only the Grim Donut really slapped the floor. A few bikes were very close and would pick up dirt on a different surface
Chain ground slap on the Grim Donut! Watched it a couple of times and no other bike achieved it. Trek slash and ibis mojo were close
I first saw the video I thought this was a grim donut vid
Send this to a friend if they ask what you need 200mm of travel for 😂
Crabsolutely fascinating to see all the different styles of rear suspension and see them work
I think the Propain spindrift is the coolest, though I do like my Hightower V2. Would love to see an Evil drop.
The only "bottomed out" I've ever done was me trying to do a wheelie when my chain fell.
*Boom the End*
This is really fascinating. It looks like the front and rear begin compressing in tandem, then at the half way point, the front compression pauses for a bit then resumes compressing. The rider compression seems to begin when the bike has no more to give. The rider looks like the sequence is knees, followed by hips, followed by lower back, followed by neck head drop. Would like to see one bike compression sequence expanded in almost a frame by frame sequence. Not sure what this means but it is certainly very interesting.
I love watching Jason be in agony for three and a half minutes
Look at the different amount of flex in the handlebars! Thats what I find most educating here!
1:50 is the hard tail BEST at distributing the impact to BOTH wheels ?
I see full sus nearly crush the rear while the front is not even compressed.
I think so, I also think the risk here is that depending of the quality of the frame it could literally break in half (talking about a hardtail) l
I didn’t expect such a jerky motion out of the front forks!
just shows how the slack angles really impede the way they compress
@@yorkshirelad3133 I’d be interested in seeing a carbon vs aluminum frame (of the same bike) version too! Frame flex and how/if it impedes front fork progression 🤔
@@BikingwithJP yeah for sure, there's so much happening which you don't realise until it's replayed at 1000fps
The slack angles aren't meant to work on flat ground.
@@GRPABT1 exactly! And why it’s important to buy the right bike for the type of riding you are doing 🚵♂️
imo the Commencal Meta and the Propain Spindrift were the best! The Jeffsy looked extremely stiff for the aluminum frame
1:31 I belive we seen him before in a video
Inteesting... maybe I’ve missed it, but... something wrong with the Scott brand?
ua-cam.com/video/j5Fzuhlst98/v-deo.html
It was extremely difficult to watch the hard tail bottom out
But also gives me a lot of confidence in their frame strength. They build those things to be absolutely bulletproof now. I have a Commencal Meta hardtail and that thing is like the AK-47 of bikes. I've had it for 2 years now and abuse it on the trail all the time. Frame technology has come so so far now that you can huck a hard tail to flat over and over and over and it just keeps going.
I like seeing some of the frames tweak and bend. Craziness! These are all enduro tho right? How about some DH?
a bunch of these were xc bikes. the epic, the yeti 115 and a fe others are short travel
I’m really impressed by the lefty!!! It didn’t flex as much as expected
clearly some of them handle it better than others :) and some looked like the chain was about to dismount heh
Plot twist: All that clip comes from the same bike, they just repaint it over and over.
Grim Donut is an accurate name. It's exactly what the rider will be when they get impaled by the top tube after the fork snaps off of it.
