To be honest partial invisibility only sucks in cramped spaces. Get some distance, and it can actually cut the amount of projectiles you even have to dodge by three. More space - more time to react with about 2/3 of the balls flying way past you. OG maps are tight so invisibility often gets overlooked. It deserves more love
This level contains some of my favorite textures in Doom - one is all the wooden walls and floors, I just love seeing wood in Doom maps. Another is the "bleeding machinery" and "skin wall" thing near the regular exit. Gives me some Hellraiser vibes.
@@davidmcgill1000 There are chainsaws, so there must be wood, right? I suppose the more logical explanation is that it's part of Hell's corruption of the facility. Demons are oldschool and thus prefer to use marble, wood and flesh/bone for their walls.
I know you're putting the outtakes at the end of the video for each individual level, but I think compiling them into a separate video once Ultimate Doom is done would be a good idea too.
I honestly only remembered like 2 parts of this map. I haven't played through in like 4 years but I thought I'd remember more. E1 and E3 for sure are more seared into my mind.
ngl i like that mostly the rooms have a diffirent wall texture and stuff. it really is good when you’re somehow lost and makes the map look good too. also a question which episode 2 map is your favourite?
E2M6 is my favorite map to run on nightmare difficulty, especially because of the dark rooms part. It broke my heart when speedrunners found a way to glitch inside the walls in that map
I don't know if I can just accept decino casually picking up chainsaws and partial invisibility powerups all the time. Got so used to seeing him actively avoid them in almost all his other videos lol.
Another interesting fact about this map. It has no keys. I didn't realise this myself until it was pointed out to me I'm sorry if I'm going on about this but this is another map that spams secrets unnecessarily. Leading to the secret exit for instance there are four secrets, when it should really be just one
I recently did a UV-fast playthrough of Doom and after many attempts, finally got to the secret exit of this level with all the kills. I then died to the lost souls. "Good enough", I decided, and warped to the secret level.
You death #5 reminds me of my attempts to speed run the entire Episode 2 in Hurt Me Plenty 100% which more than often this map was one of my real run killer. Mostly for the Caco/Shotgunner/Imp section with the plasna at the center. And yeah instead of the missing items is the missing kills. So just imagine the suffer to back track in a good pace... Big Joy :P
This needs to be a speedrun category. NM 100%items creates a whole new aspect to the game. So fun to watch, when skilled player beats the maps this way.
Looking forward to Friday's E2M6 bloodbath :] I've started playing through alongside you with a custom gzdoom skill level I call "Remotely Fair", which has UV monster counts + NM's respawn timer (but no fast monsters). It's still quite tough but feels more doable for my skill level. And yeah, E2M5 here is quite tough with the respawning, the central area with the two barons and the wood halls beyond it are just awful for doubling back through. E2M6 I knew would be tough but this one had a lot of surprises (including the fact that the entire last area isn't needed as it has no secrets or items!)
If you're interested, there's the compatibility flag "Monsters Nightmare Reflexes", a type of fast monsters that makes them behave _exactly_ like in Nightmare. On UV with no respawning, it's a fun time to spice up easier mapsets.
That's actually a pretty difficult setting unless you have NM ammo pickups. IIRC, UV + respawn parameter was a common DM setup. Playing solo, you have a lot less access to items.
Ouch! I can see why this one is even harder than previous ones. 😬Aside from that, really glad you beat this map. Items can be annoying sometimes when you forget where it was previous of your knowledge. I thought this map is okay but still with that Lost Souls around it is a problem. Can't wait to see you do secret level in Nightmare Mode. 🙂
I commend you for your bravery doing this all on nightmare! Absolutely cannot fathom how Episode 4 is going to go, but I absolutely cannot wait for the rest of this.
Personally I found that chaingun is actually amazing against the Lost Souls. They have a giant pain chance, and if they are hit AT ALL during their charge they will stop instantly. You can keep at bay entire crowd of them with just the chaingun by aiming left and right and holding fire.
I cracked up at how the Pinky that killed you at 11:43 chills for a just moment, before scuttling away at Mach 2.5 to chomp the Imp to death for that fireball
Damn, that map was that hot that actually the amount of deaths was miscounted, you died 6 times man, the transition at 10:32 actually increases the kill counter by 1 when it's the same replay. Oh, and gotta love the fact that the counter is 3-digit long. I wonder if that was meant for Sunder times or smth : P
Just started the video, I have been waiting for this one. Command Center is dangerous even on UV, you add fast monsters and nightmare reflexes to it, brutal. On nightmare... I can't wait to see how you get through this.
Interesting to compare this playthrough with Peter's playthrough here on Decino's channel some 3 years ago. You immediately see a different style of playing - Decino being a 100% player, and Peter being a speedrunner.
Wow it is amazing how much damage can be done to you on nightmare by demon's which normally wouldn't be an issue though I'm sure I speak for most people with the fact that we do enjoy watching those outtakes. Anyway it's Thursday morning rusty roo dog and zenni the rabbit are fed I've got a lovely hot cup of tea in hand and watching decino play through the classic doom truly an excellent way to start the day so with that as always cheers for upload decino.
Back in 93 or 94 I had a demo of Doom 95 Ep 1. I played it through about 50 times looking harder each time for the plasma rifle because 7 year old me thought it was so cool. On the title screen, in the background they had a recording of someone playing different levels through on nightmare. They died after about 20 seconds. I remember thinking it was the most impossible video game challenge ever and there was no way anyone could beat a single level on that difficulty.
It's a confusing map but I enjoy playing this, especially episode 3 inferno was supposed to be a tougher episode than e1 and e2 but surprisingly everyone ace that map
I've never thought lost souls can be even more annoying and there we have Nighmare difficulty setting. Great run! Zero Master somehow dodged those bastards at the end, but we all know ZM :D
Lost souls are really the Bees of hell. But what if we threw in some pinkies and everytime the pinkies bow wow'd they'd shoot hissing lost souls at you? Truly this is hell.
There's something really satisfying in seeing levels beaten on Nightmare with all 3x100%, and even exceeding that in terms of kills. Guess it depends on the source port, but some would probably require that you kill every originally placed monster at least once before you get 100%? I might be wrong about that one tho
I have a love-hate relationship with E2M5. The first time I played Doom I wanted to do a UV fast single segment run of the whole game, and this level is the one I died on the most ;_;
Yeah, this map is more of a routing puzzle than most. Shotgun > green armour > chaingun > Lost soul room while your health is high as they don't respawn > berserk to get yourself back to fighting shape > clear rest of the map.
Whoa, people already said everything about this map. Tough as it is. I imagine next two. Mazy, dark and ambushy Halls of damned must be especially hard, right?
Man that starting room is the worst with fast monsters. The shotgunners love dealing huge amounts of damage while you dodge fireballs from the sidelines. And then one or two pinkies find a way out of their room and trap you in the secret monster closets. I never thought I'd have so much trouble on this map. And the secret exit.........
This is such a tedious maze of a map but you've shown how feasible it is with your parameters. The secret level's going to be cream cheese by comparison.
I am not as good at doom so when I played through Doom 1&2 UV MAX Fast last year this was actually the second map I struggled with. (After E1M9) I was also surprised since this map isn't that hard on UV. But turbo pinkies and speed souls really do make the difference. This map also shows why I don't like to play on NM: The instant wake up makes the lost soul secret impossible to do without taking massive damage.
Death 2: First Pinky got a tasty 28 damage bite Second Pinky followed up with a 24 damage chomp But that was a diversion for the final Pinky to attempt to Vore you with a 32 damage bite almost simultaneously
I always found this level to be a bit of a confusing mess and easy to get lost in even after all these years. Also, since I recently started playing Eviternity it makes me sad to see full health Lost Souls in the main game. Why couldn't id have had the foresight to give them half health normally? Eviternity got it right!
We know crushed lost souls can be resurrected by the arch vile as they leave a blood puddle (but then are Ghosts). Do Crushed lost souls respawn in Nightmare mode? And if so, do they respawn as ghosts? What about any other monsters that die by crushing?
There's some irony in the fact that the monster that caused most problems in a nightmare run is the one that doesn't respawn
Decino went from hating to somewhat liking partial invisibility, what a character development
"The Enemy of my Enemy is my friend"
As annoying as it can make non-hitscan projectile dodging, hitscan enemies are just so deadly on Nightmare/fast monsters that it's worth it.
And chainsaws and Items! Best character arc ever!
This is what 100% X3 Nightmare does to a mf
Decino and Zero Master uploading daily Nightmare runs. I want more in my veins. 😊
its always nice to see the origional maps again after all these years.
This level contains some of my favorite textures in Doom - one is all the wooden walls and floors, I just love seeing wood in Doom maps. Another is the "bleeding machinery" and "skin wall" thing near the regular exit. Gives me some Hellraiser vibes.
Man, I don't even remember what the regular exit looks like... I always turn back after the red hallway with the pinkies and cacodemon.
@@spase667 Oh, you haven't really missed much... just a small room with a switch. And luckily for Decino - no items in it :D
Which raises the question of what wood is doing on a moon of Mars.
@@davidmcgill1000 is probably hell wood or sumthin

Was already the plan. I've said I would in E1M1's video.
I honestly used to hate this map, because I always got lost as a kid lmao.
Ya I always just went for the secret exit and skip most of this map…
Oh man, Fortress of Mystery is gonna be a migraine - all those Baron and Caco hits! 😩
Great stuff as always, guy!
Just get them to infight ASAP and run about collecting the items while they're in a zooboomafoo.

9:24 that was a massive fail. In Duke Nukem you can actually fire projectiles into the teleporters and kill enemies like that.
I love the opening room of this, very fortress-like. The episode 2 maps don't stick out in my mind like the e1 and e3 maps do but I like this one.
I honestly only remembered like 2 parts of this map. I haven't played through in like 4 years but I thought I'd remember more. E1 and E3 for sure are more seared into my mind.
3:27 - the partial invisibility makes it possible to survive the secret exit by causing the lost souls to mostly self-terminate
ngl i like that mostly the rooms have a diffirent wall texture and stuff. it really is good when you’re somehow lost and makes the map look good too. also a question which episode 2 map is your favourite?

I remember playing this in Project Brutality, with an alternate lost soul that exploded and dealt splash damage when killed.
