Cheesing is not about easy or harder, but about using definitely unintentional gameplay mechanics. Sometimes cheese are much harder than regular way to play the game.
tbh, the wall run key grab is a riskier speed strat that can leave you very exposed to the respawning shotgunners. In contrast, that building is like a bunker of sorts - easier to go inside and methodically take out the monsters in the first room while shielded from the mobs outside… and then you know exactly what’s coming with that ambush in the back room.
hey, any unmodded run is legit in my book. If you find a cool trick then exploit the fuck out of it unless it's some sort of "memory overflow level teleport glitch" like in zelda

That's not possible. You cannot possibly have more health than armor in this map, except if you only pick up the armor bonuses and not the green armor. You cannot heal that much with just 9 health bonuses

Aaah, the "new" episode - it never felt as close otmy heart as the original three. That's probably because I didn't ghet to play it until around 2003 (maybe even 2004). In the pre-internet era, I didn't even know it existed. Back in the day, id Software were nice enough to release a free patch to upgrade the "regular" 3-episode version of Doom to Ultimate Doom (that's how I got Episode 4). Raven did this for Heretic too. I doubt the game companies of present day would have done the same...
I like the that you called it "episode" with quotation marks, exactly my feeling. I also didn't know about this until much later,even though I actually played the sequel before the first game. At first I was excited about the OG levels for the first Doom as I'm the weird one who enjoys the original shotgun and doesn't like how SSG stole the show. But I quickly realized that there was nothing original about these, there were no new textures IIRC only reused ones (and they even used the bunny skybox from the outro eww).
Game companies felt much friendlier back then because a lot of them, including id Software, were pretty much indie companies composed of just a few people.

"Easy" and "difficulty overrated" but yet it is the map that has killed you the most so far. Also, geez, you have become such a beast at playing Nightmare. I currently wouldn't be able to finish this challenge you are doing.
Fun fact, this map has a Soulsphere and a Plasma Rifle on multiplayer (plus a Berserk in the ending room), so on the Unity ports' UV+ difficulty, it's actually arguably easier than normal UV despite the fast monsters on UV+. This map was also soften a lot in the Playstation port, as the 4 Medikits from the lower difficulties were kept on UV (as well as the health and armor bonuses recovering 2% on that port while none were removed), and the Barons were replaced with Hell Knights, with two of the Nobles in the NIN secret being removed completely.
And yet, pistol start Hell Beneath in PSX Doom can still give you a really bad time. Mostly because the controls don't suit with the level loyaout. And don't let me start with Perfect Hatred in Ps1.
@@quiver5756 Don't forget the PSX Hell Keep, I would say that one on Pistol Start is even harder than the original Hell Beneath, at least Hell Beneath gave you armor. Some time ago I Pistol Started all the PSX maps with fast monsters through PSX CE, and PSX Hell Keep was the hardest map for me, even the hardest of the Sigil, TNT, and Plutonia PSX-recreated maps I didn't find as tough.
@@OmegaTyrant Funny enough PSX Hell Keep was made by American Mcgee as well, and with his other original Jaguar doom map "Hell Gate" are probably his first maps ever. And as result the maps probably weren't designed to be play with pistol start in the first place.
When I was playing through this map, I was going for UV Max and actually found the lack of ammo a worst problem than the lack of health. So many barons
One of the interesting things about Nightmare is it tends to resolve "not enough ammo" map design problems; yes because ammo pickup amounts are double, but also because former humans of all types are friendly and thoughtful enough to bring along extra ammo with them every time they respawn.

When I played through this episode on Nightmare on the XBLA years back, this map and Against Thee Wickedly made me come this close to giving up. And that was me playing with a controller. Also how the hell do you get the NIN secret to trigger so easily?!

I have difficulty just doing this on UV going for all kills. Nightmare I tried once and was overwhelmed by respawning demons. Thank you for showing how possible it is.
After beating doom 1 on nightmare . i Honestly felt a sense of pride. This was truly one of the hardest levels to beat and you did it like nothing. I grab the key the normal way. Wish i would have known to reach thru bars
Well, this is mostly a bug from the original DOOM, just like the yellow key bug from DOOM II, and it can be achieved through the Source Port decino is using and others which keep it like PrBoom+. GZDoom and other modern source ports fixes this bug so it's not possible to do so on them.
One nice thing about this level is that it's short. As nasty as it can be, you're not losing a lot of time if you die and restart. Because it's short but intense, it's a good level to train and build up skills with.
"Can I get one of those health packs, maybe a stim?" No. You must understand that existence and adversity are one in the same. I'll meet you half way with 9 Health, and 112 armor.... and 20 hit scanners.
You know how much of a challenge (as well as how miserable) this episode is going to be when the first level has "Sign Of Evil" as its track (vs. "At Doom's Gate on E1M1, "I Sawed The Demons" on E2M1, and "Untitled" on E3M1)...

I was looking forward to this one. Brilliant run! I recently finally accomplished 100/100/100 on UV and had to resort to painful punching of all the Spectres and then spent many, many tries trying to use the rockets given to kill all the NIИ Barons...
"Not that bad!" This map is insanely hard to get 100% Secrets on for anyone but a seasoned pro. And if you don't understand the mechanics for the red key grab, activating the lifts while still on it, or strafe jumping you aren't beating this in under 20 tries. Even with great mechanics, this one is very RNG dependent. Just 1 bad specter or shotgunner respawn can kill your run. That said, I LOVE this map. By far the best atmosphere in all of the Ultimate Doom and the 3rd most iconic map behind E1M8 and E2M8. Those were legendary reveals of the bosses. This map is packed full while being claustrophobic. It's fair in the sense you don't have to puzzle anything out, you just have to get through it. And the 5 Baron trap is the ultimate troll move. Top 5 map all time for me in the official releases.
All right, here is where the real "pekelni boroshna" starts. (In HL1 scientist's voice) How interesting! It seems that in absence of lost souls spectres took their place as rocket baits.
i've buyed doom on steam for 2 years and still i couldn't even beat e4m1 imagine the rest of it but your videos are great and go directly to the point where you make it seem easy and still im gonna try nightmare mode since i never could beat one level with it activate

I played E4 M1 this weekend to try to get ahead of your runs but I did it on UV. Took me like 20 times lol. But once you catch on to the patterns and the methods to cheese, it becomes easier. Can’t imagine doing it on nightmare tho. Hearing it take you 7 times was a relief haha
Me an my two neighbors were so drunk one night we decided to play Doom on UV with fast monsters. Hour and a half later, and still on this level, we decided that Doom and drinking don't always go together. Now Quake and LSD is a different story. What a trip that is.
Well, that was *CLEAN* ✨ I think this level its a great welcome to the lower part of hell (also, the starting room seems like youre coming out from a coffin, or is it just me?)
I'm surprised you were able to get to the secret teleporter without taking any damage. That acid floor in front of the secret door is just a pain in the ass.
Perfect run, then you keep firing that rocket launcher near that ledge by the exit. Had me sweating bullets. Expecting one to blow up in your face after a respawn or bad autoaim. Nicely done. I can't get max kills and secrets on HMP. Not enough ammo or skill.

If the red key grab is a legit enough strat for Zero Master, then it is legit enough for everybody else is what I say.

There are a few medikits on easier difficulties, but they're flagged not to appear on hard difficulty.
Maybe it hasnt been playtested on hard dufficulty or he forgot to flag medkits for hard, but decided to keep it that way.

One little touch I love is how in the PS1 version they add some bloody meathooks to the starting room to give you a rough idea of your chances.

As a plebian who has trouble with E4M1 on Hurt Me Plenty, this is like god tier gameplay. Excellent run.

I barely did this well on Hurt me Plenty, which was the difficulty I chose when I first played doom. Vowed never again to play this level.
I'm surprised you were able to get to the secret teleporter without taking any damage. That acid floor in front of the secret door is just a pain in the ass.

Perfect run, then you keep firing that rocket launcher near that ledge by the exit. Had me sweating bullets. Expecting one to blow up in your face after a respawn or bad autoaim. Nicely done. I can't get max kills and secrets on HMP. Not enough ammo or skill.
