Hey everyone, it's Dr. Nelson from Carolina Active Health, and today I'm going to go over internal rotation of the tibia.
    Staying In A Neutral Position:
If you've ever seen someone whose foot looks like it wants to naturally externally rotate but whose hip is in a neutral position, sometimes that can be a sign of a lack/loss of internal rotation of the tibia.
One thing we do to start analyzing the knee joint is to feel the area. By performing a joint movement assessment we can see what that joint does. You can do this on your own as well. Take the hand on the same side leg and grasp the outside portion of the tibia. With the other hand, grab the inside part of your femur near the knee. Once you have done that, squeeze and rotate your hands to the middle. That will passively help with internal rotation of the tibia.
    Active Movement:
Once we do passive internal rotation of the tibia, then we can work on reinforcing that actively. Rotating your foot out and in while keeping the femur fixed and really try to push that range of motion as much as possible to work on internal rotation and external rotation. You can compare this movement on the other leg as well. Most people tend to have the most restriction with internal rotation of the tibia.
Please watch our video for a step-by-step guide on how to perform these two exercises. They are a great way to increase internal rotation of the tibia. We hope to see you soon.
