Batman Forever (SNES) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

- A playthough of Acclaim's 1995 license-based beat 'em up for the Super NES, Batman Forever.
Once upon a time, Batman was a paragon of success when it came to games based on popular media licenses. Between Sunsoft and Konami, the caped crusader had a run of unbelievably high quality games on Nintendo platforms that are still typically regarded as classics three decades later.
And then, one day, that all changed.
Batman Forever marked a hugely different tone from what we got with earlier Batman films. No longer sinister and brooding, the new film was gaudy and bright, schizophrenic and unfocused. It was, in my humble opinion, a complete mess - the distinctly anti-Burton production ended up being little more than a ludicrously high-priced menagerie of stars and CG effects. It was fun to watch once, but that was about it. And Batman's rubber nipples. Seriously, what the hell was that?
In video game land, the Batman license was no longer in Konami's hands. It had fallen squarely in the lap of Acclaim Studios, and to absolutely nobody's surprise, it failed miserably.
Batman had effectively conquered action games at this point - his platformers and his beat 'em ups were impeccable. But when the decision was made to create a new brawler, the designers seemed to feel that they needed to start from scratch, despite having a clear, workable template in the phenomenal Batman Returns SNES game.
It seems that instead of going the traditional route (that is, a brawler in the style of Final Fight or Streets of Rage), the decision was made to shoehorn Mortal Kombat's mechanics into a game that clearly wasn't meant to be a 1v1 fighting game. It makes the game feel like it was Frankensteined together from disparate pieces that never really go together - I've often wondered it was merely a test run for what eventually would become MK Mythologies: Sub-Zero.
The controls are sloppy, laggy, and needlessly complicated. You have to use every button, including the select key (?!) to perform basic actions, and the timings for the special move inputs are unintuitive and painfully unforgiving, but they must be learned cold if you're going to make it very far at all.
The stages are all huge mazes made up of CG rendered backdrops (which do look nice, though a bit generic) that hide bonus items (extra lives, energy), blueprints (for new gadgets), and Riddler boxes (lame puns that hint at secrets), in addition to millions of palette-swapped thugs. The level designs are decent, but the controls make navigating them an exercise in complete frustration - there are only so many times one can miss a ledge and die because Batman's cape glide didn't work before crying "Uncle!" and turning it off.
Like like environments, the enemies are all fairly impressively done. They're repetitive and a bit drab to look at, but for a SNES cart, the small digitized sprites animate fluidly and look clean. The music is also decent... but this was a Tim Follin soundtrack, and it falls woefully short of his usual efforts. The compositions are fine, but the samples sound tinny and thin. The SNES was the master of the fake-orchestra sound, but here everything sounds a bit too cheap and flat.
Oh, and let's not forget that the game actually features loading screens. Loading times weren't entirely unheard of on the SNES - Lock On and Street Fighter Alpha 2 both suffered from them, as well - but at every screen transition, Batman Forever grinds to a halt and blazons "HOLD ON" across the screen for several seconds. As if the pace wasn't plodding enough to begin with.
Given that the game must be completed in a single sitting, you'll get to endure a solid five-to-ten minutes of loading screens total by the time you've finished it.
Overall, I wouldn't call Batman Forever a complete bust. The idea was alright (though far better realized in MK Mytholgies: SZ, which can be seen here: • Mortal Kombat Mytholog... ) and I did occasionally find myself enjoying it, but the punishingly slow speed of the gameplay, the braindead AI, and the screwy controls all will leave you wondering if we were we actually supposed to have fun playing this.
It feels almost masochistic to ask what might've been if Konami had retained the license just a little bit longer.
And if this wasn't enough for you, also be sure to check out my video of the other Batman Forever beat 'em up here: • Batman Forever: The Ar...

I remember renting this when I was really young and couldn't get past the first screen because of the cryptic grappling controls 😂
Sammmmeeeee lol I came here just to see the comments if anyone had the same experience. 25 years later lolol
how do i get there tho 😅
Lmao same, I've been trying to find all the old games I played. I was so young so I had no clue how to play, I was always stuck.
Man i would get on here w my brother and fucking cry like a weenie till my pops took the snes😭😂
Same here
"Hold on" Hold on for what? It has to fucking load?!
This game is triceratops testicles
"Oh that's right there is no fucking jump button it's up"
"Batman forever. It sucks back then, and it sucked forever"
please hold..
Take a shot every time the game displays a "HOLD ON" screen. If you don't wake up in a hospital, you've got an iron alcohol tolerance.
"Hold on for what? It has to fucking load?!"
@@9termunde87 This game had loading screens before loading screens were a thing. (Try saying that three times fast. 🤣)
@@9termunde87 Yeah, I know.
HOLD ON should have been the game's name.
It’s sucks then and it’s sucks forever
I remember this game as a kid. It was very frustrating yet I kept on torturing myself trying to beat it.
Same here, and also I did not know english, im Chilean, so it was more difficult.
@@Libertario911 - Thanks for sharing. Did you play the game in Chile or in the USA? Essentially, I am curious to whether they produce this game without bothering to translate it.
@@blahblah55237 wow im so glad you are interested. When I was young mostly of games were in english, so all games that I played I didnt understand the story, advices or every text. Is not like today, I dont remember playing a game in spanish, it was normal for us playing in english. Just play, and dont read hahaha.
My english is on progress!!
@@blahblah55237 and for your question, I played that game in chile, I waa super exited when my dad bought it!! What a memories...My dad is not with us now.
YOU THINK TO SHOOT UP YOU'D PRESS UP BUT NO!! IT JUMPS!!
*The first 15 seconds almost brought tears to my eyes. I remember the spring of when I was in third grade when I first got my Super Nintendo and a fresh Batman Forever game. I remember the smell of the fresh box. The 90s was the best!*
It wasn't the Best. It's just that we were young back then. That's the only reason you cherish those memories
@@molostone8946 Were you also a kid in the '90s?
@@rknine7998 of course, and I played this game, too. That's why I said what I said. No matter how tough things were, when we were young kids, it was the best time.
@@molostone8946 I remember TGI Friday on Friday nights, it was Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Full House, Family Matter and Boy Meets World.
@@rknine7998 totally.
Just looking at Batman's combat mechanics in this game make me imagine him in Mortal Kombat on the SNES now.
I could see Batman on the bridge throwing coins at Two Face for a fatality.
That’s probably because the crew behind this game did the Genesis port of Mortal Kombat. So the controls for this game are like Mortal Kombat if Mortal Kombat didn’t work lol.
@@TheFakeJake That's actually true. lol
AVGN taught us all this
Never understood why this game was so dark even for a Batman game.
After the amazing run of Batman games we had seen to this point on Nintendo systems, I remember really looking forward to this one. How foolish I was in my optimism.
Konami would've made a better game. They did an excellent job on Batman Returns
You have make sure the game's polished in order to make certain it lives up to the hype!
Have you seen footage of the PC version of the game? Got some better visuals and sounds, but it looks generally the same thing.
The PC version runs smooth and fast
Well, it was based on one of the worst Batman movies of all-time, sooo....
@@vgaoct91 I have. I do remember it looking much better, though I didn't play it much. I really didn't have the patience for it at that point, even with the better graphics, and my being super into the PC version of WWF Wrestlemania Arcade at the time didn't much help its chances.
This is an example of a game that was too ambitious for its own good. When you compare this to Batman Returns for the SNES which came out two years before this, there's no comparison. That was a game programmed by masters. This was a group of people in over their heads with their own ideas.
Even The Batman Forever Arcade game is better than this.
Rob Kearsy Peace and respect but “No Way” No Way Bro. This was a Classic
Yessir this is Classic
yusakug Oh how those same masters have fallen from grace.
@@songoku9348 Well, to be fair, the people who worked on Konami's Batman Returns probably left the company years ago, so I doubt they have anything to do with Konami's current situation.
The nostalgia is insane
Just like in the movie, Batman defeats Two-Face by hitting him in the dick with a batarang 40 times in a row. Good attention to detail by the devs.
Could never get past the FUCKING Circus level for the longest time back in 1995. When I finally did, I got bored and never went any further than Two-Face's hideout.

YES!!! This cartridge had LOADING TIMES!
One of the best soundtracks I've heard.
Like wave of nostalgia. Hit me like a tone of bricks. I played this when it came out, and I'm 33 today.
I remember playing this game and after finally being able to get to the end and beat it after many tries, I was so mad at the ending.
I never liked this game but I had an odd fascination with it which drove me to rent it multiple times.
professors84 lmao sad but true. This was one of the most complicated games i have ever played as a kid growing up.
Blockbuster !!!!
yeah I always feel like playing it, but never finished it.
I bought it for the graphics and played it a lot. The controls were jacked up, but the atmosphere was catching.
Same
The best part of Schumacher's run at the helm of Batman is when Batman the Animated Series poked some light-hearted fun at him.
In what way???
Oh my bad. Internet says it’s an episode of “The New Batman Adventures” called “Legends of the Dark Knight.” I’d just ruin it if o tried to explain the gag via UA-cam comment. You’d just have to watch it.
Eh, Forever is a decent movie.
btas was better then his movies especially there takes on riddler and definitely two face
This is one of those, I enjoyed playing up to a point games, then got too frustrated with it and stopped, but I do like this game.
I never got past the circus section but I do play it from time to time. Well said
The music score from this video game like this would definitely be worth composing to make a good motion picture music score and I would highly recommend this as inspiration to build upon it as an idea for true filmmaking that will give superhero films the best head start to building a true DCEU right from the start I hope that a symphony orchestra will do this music justice for the Batman films in future so that we will get a hint on what it will sound like when it’s composed to perfection
0:44 This menu always startled me when I was younger. There was something about Batman's face that made me really uneasy, and the music didn't help either. I'd always try to get through it as quickly as possible. It still partially unsettling for me, although it's probably just due to my childhood experience. Regardless, this game wasn't very good, and I never got past the first stage because I didn't know the controls and didn't have the manual.
Big Riddle looks like he came from Clayfighter
I knew I wasn't the only one who was thinking that! 🤣
The actual experience of playing Batman™ Forever isn't much better than that of watching the movie.
Also: imagine me walking up to another grown man and calling him “Death Blow” or “Centaur”…
I actually played through this game before I saw the movie. I wouldn't recommend either one of them! Hilariously enough, I could never get the Holographic Decoy to work, even when I knew the input to use it.
There is a *HUGE* difference between knowing the inputs for grabs and special weapons, and playing without knowing any of them.
I didn't have the instruction manual as a kid and we didn't have internet in my house.
I could only get up to the circus level before running out of time and dying. :(
Same story 🙋🏻♂️
I remember playing this as a kid and I had no idea what to do lmao. Such a bizarrely designed game.
I just find it hilarious seeing Batman getting punched in the back of the head and having a horn blown in his ear for some reason LOL 😂
0:16 The Batman (2022) Main Theme sounds like this.
i remember how frusterated i got on the sega genesis with the 3 buttons trying to figure out how to grapple hook...
also realizing that the sega version had voice audio in it, jank voice but still

I had this game for the genesis , it was a tedious experience
Batman Forever Is My All Time Favorite Batman Movie, Besides The One's With Michael Keaton
AVGN: Batman Forever, it sucked back then, and it sucks forever!
I'M BATMAAAAAAN!
Like theirs 4 buttons right in front of the controller like that's not enough
@@imhere2clownyourass348 For the moves it had, it isnt. You have high kick, low kick, high punch and low punch. That's the 4 buttons already.
Second, the select and up to use the hook is fine, it's not rocket science and you ONLY use it once you clean the screen of enemies.
@@1300l I know how the game is played. Pos
I'm Batmaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnn.
I never knew how to use the special features lol
Never got past level 3 as a kid
I remember I used to play this with my little cousin in 1996, he didn't figured out how to drop down from a hole, so when I was playing with him, I just stumbled upon dropping down the hole after that this become his favorite game.... yeah.
Wow I didn’t know how to drop down either 🤣🤦🏾♂️😂😂
Games then had to be figured out.
Larry Worthy Jr. How do you drop down??
@@drbayou420 Been over 20 years ago I played it, something to do with the jump button while pressing Down or something
Down and R in this version, I think. I played the Genesis version, and getting down in that is Down and C (on a 6-button controller).
Wow that track at the begging ... amazing
I don't see what ambitious has to do with this take here, what's that got to do with this, this game was great!!! Batman returns was a side scrolling beat em up, this used that mortal Kombat art and basic style of fighting and made a fighting/adventure game that looked amazing at the time
I do remember this game....I was sooo damn excited to play it..
Goddamn man, you have an iron constitution to get through all these turds. This one of my ALL time most hated games. Rented it from my usual place when it came out, but since it only came with a very basic instruction card glued to the back of the rental case and not the actual manual, I got as far as the area where you had to use the grappling hook. Never went back and never plan to. I'd honestly rather play Superman 64.
Oh man, it's rough to begin with, but I can't even imagine without the instruction book. Even it didn't cover all of the controls, but it at least covered most of the bases.
In all honesty, while this isn't the worst I've played, I do agree. Superman 64 is more "fun," though I'm using that term *very* loosely.
This might have been extremely disappointing
I'd say this and the Power Rangers game are two of the more complicated games to play. but, SNES had a LOT of those kind of "hard" games.
I've been thinking about this game for years but could never remember exactly what game it was, just found this video and brought back some bad memories. I remember being excited to get home from school one day back in the 90's because my parents were going to take me to Blockbuster to rent a game for the weekend, and this was the game I rented. And I could never get past the first screen. All I remember was being stuck in a small room at the very beginning of the game and walking back and forth in a small room and being able to throw a grappling hook at the ceiling, and nothing else. It's kind of haunted me for years until now. How do you know exactly where to throw the grappling hook. I can't be the only person that got stuck here right?
So right! Played two minutes ago and got stuck like you as a kid. Awful control scheme! And there is no indication of nothing.
“Smells like ‘Batman Forever’ down here!”
I caught that Robot Chicken reference
01:08:16 chainsaw to the nuts!
This soundtrack PURE 90s vibe
You should have shown some of the fatalities. I like the one where Batman throws his Batarang and decapitates the enemy, and it returns and cuts through the torso and cuts them in half. Or the one where he shoots his grappling hook through the chest and rips the heart out.
Thank you for this nostalgic 🙏
I love the almost comic book art deco in the movie and in this game
Never forget the majesty that is Big Riddle…
I was just listening to Batman forever themes until I got this notification
That freaking grappling hook!!!!! Not even nostalgia can save you from this messy game. Stick with The Adventure of Batman and Robin instead. Life is too short
Fighting has a slow paced mortal kombat feel.
Used the mk2 engine
Man what makes snes games so hard is that it’s no save points when you die you have to start all over that what I hated about this game, the page master, last action hero, toy story etc etc .. there weren’t many games like Zelda and Mario or games alike Aladdin with passwords
*YOU PUSH THE SELECT BUTTON TO DO AN INGAME CHARACTER ACTION*
Should've been used as a weapons/map screen. Besides, the hook isn't really a functional tool.
As a small child I watched horror movies like the original A nightmare on elm street so I was used to scary stuff but I was kinda terrified for some reason of the intro lol It was a combination of the music and Batman and Robin running in your face on the tv screen. Idk why it just scared me.
It's such a shame. The music is epic, the backgrounds are gorgeous, the character models look lifelike... but the game just isn't that fun to play.
I'm coming here today because I've still never got past the first level.
I think most people didn't out of frustration or boredom 😆
@@NintendoComplete hey i liked this game i face no problems at all seriousley.
So at long last, you tackle this turkey! Good run, all told! I could give up easily on this... Compared to Spawn on SNES, where I can get SOMEWHERE!
vgaoct91 oh god that spawn game smh. The absolute worst. Those 2 games take the cake
@@foots230 I disagree. At least Spawn has better quality despite its Revenge of Shinobi-like difficulty.
vgaoct91 the pacing if the game was horrible and the input combination for moves was a turn off. After stage 4 i would just turn it off.
Two things that always made me laugh were the thugs riding the chainsaws, and the idiots jumping off the flying machine at the end of the second stage.
This game was also released on PC (Dos, I think). The biggest change was the addition of voice acting (at least for the Riddler's clues. And it sounded nothing like Jim Carrey).
Cool game. I really like the digitized photo realistic graphics.
I remember this game being straight-up weird. The creepy cut-scenes, the green screen Mortal Kombat style pre-rendered graphics, the annoying combos....
Just a weird-ass came.
I always hoped to see batmans head get punched off or ripping someone in half. lol Its to bad they didn't program those moves in secretly with a code or game genie. :P
Batman Forever on SNES is my favorite game ever I try to find Secret in level 4 warehouse.
The combat system in this is still more fun than the arkham games to me, it's less button mashy at least.
So how do you get the gadget to shoot straight up leading you to new areas of the Arkham Asylum?
Remember renting this game Batman Forever off of SNES a long time ago growing up and couldn't beat the game or couldn't beat stage 1 at all!
I always found it hilarious that all the enemies have different names. You mean there’s only one John and Tommy that works for Riddler and Two Face?
How do you climb to the ceiling with the hook gun?
These graphics looked so real 🤣
The same mistake would later be repeated with the abysmal Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero!
The controls were at least better in that one. No bullshit with having to use the select button
@@NintendoComplete mk mythologies is a pretty decent title if anyone can look past its stiff controls.
@@NintendoComplete But it has a separated button for turning back. Both games won't be compared to Comix Zone anyway.
Mistake no that game wasn’t and I enjoyed playing it
I remember playing this game along with all the times I was yelling and swearing at the TV & throwing the controller when I died in the game.
Loved this game
Too bad this wasn't done in a classic beat em up style like Returns. Would've been way better than whatever they tried to make this.
Knowing that Probe Entertainment did the console ports of Mortal Kombat, and the fact they did the SNES/Genesis versions of this game, I think that it's safe to assume that this game *was* built on top of Mortal Kombat after all.
They could have done this game like batman returns and it would have worked so well. even thrown in music from the movie and digitized voices.
For anyone interested, PJ & Klagie's co-op speedrun of this game from GDQ is incredibly entertaining and they break down how the entire game works and why it's even worse than you think it is.
ua-cam.com/video/bJDMRdy56ek/v-deo.html
It's the soundtrack for me...
Awesomeness please do more thanks
This game remember me a bit of the level design from Blackthorne, I don't think it's that bad but I guess any game feels wrong without responsive and good controls.
I could play it more than the little bit of don't understand nothing and just turn off.
One day at Acclaim...
"Batman Returns was pretty successful and beloved by many, was it?"
"Yeah, because it's an epic fighting game"
"Hey, we own the rights to Mortal Kombat ports, how about we make Batman Forever's game a clone of it?"
"Can we also still include platforming?"
"Yeah but we gotta find a way to implement that stuff."
"I know, just make them be done by cryptic and hard button combinations so they don't mess up the amazing gameplay!"
"You're getting a raise, Johnson."
I really appreciate ur patient's
I wonder if you’re fighting the creators of the game?
Being that it's been made by acclaim, it makes you wonder, why would they implement a fighting game and make it into a Batman game, I honestly expected Batman to rip someone's spinal cord out 😂😂🤣🤣 *avgn, and this is from me personally, I've been asking this question in retropolis zone's streams, would anyone rather play this game, or nekopara 😆😆🤣, apparently not one of the moderators didn't know what nekopara was 😆😆🤣*
