Woodturning Not Just a Box

  • This is a piece that I saw made ‎@CraftSuppliesUSA and decided to give it a try!
I made it out of Manitoba Maple, (box Elder), and I left the walls a bit thicker than I normally would for a regular box because of the weight of what is put inside.
I tapered the inside of the lid, ( even though the lid comes off), for easy removal of the box content.
let me know what you think, and at what point in the video you figured out what it was!
“Many of the woods I use are from trees that have been cut down due to disease or to make way for construction. This is wood that would otherwise be burned or end up in a landfill.
To me, it is exciting to find the hidden beauty in a chunk of wood. Even a very plain piece of wood offers design opportunities. When working with plain wood, I often enhance the wood by carving or burning. My carved and burned designs mimic textures and patterns found in nature.

Anything that helps make it satisfying to save coins is a great project. Pretty piece of maple, and excellent turn.

I'm envious of your speed controlled lathe, would be very nice to have that 😁
The grain on this piece is stunning, especially the 'flame' ... another beautiful piece, but I expect nothing less 👍

I guess I'm a little nieve, but I thought most lathes had speed control...🤪
There wasn't very much flame on this piece, and it was quite punky and hard to get a good finish. It took a lot of sanding, but I finally got a good finish
      Thanks for watching ❤️

@@spiritwynd I could buy a three phase motor and a VFD and make it speed controlled, but that'd cost quite a lot.
I have a Minimax T124 copy lathe, with all of the copy parts removed as they were getting in the way ... they cost over £3k, got mine for £400 😁

I wish I could claim the idea for this one, but alas I cannot 😔

That's very ingenious and they way the coins slip down that gentle taper is very satisfying. Unfortunately it's also slightly reminiscent of money going down the drain... Thanks Heather, that's one of your best.

@@spiritwynd It reminds me of that expression 'money talks' - I never have it long enough to hear what it's trying to say.

It’s absolutely gorgeous. I have a question, how do you prevent it from cracking? I made a box to keep salt in and it cracked. It too was end grain.

    • @spiritwynd
      @spiritwynd  Рік тому +1

Hi Vincent! This piece of wood was cut about 3 years ago and very dry. It also didn't have the pith in it while drying, which would have caused it to Crack.
Hope this helps, and thanks for watching!
