Wood crafter by day, Housekeeper by night!
Follow me as I learn how to use a wood lathe! I've only been turning since January of 2021, so I have lots to learn! But I have fallen in love with it, and I know that I'll be doing it for years to come! I hope you join me, to watch my progress!
I have always loved working with wood, be it power carving pendants, learning to chip carve, making Bentwood Rings with stone inlay, or just plain whittling for fun!
I also do Pyrography, that I may incorporate into my woodturning at some point in time.
I also power carve bone pendants, and earings, that are loved by everyone!

Red oak Beaded Bowls
Переглядів 304Місяць тому
I love making these little beaded bowls! They are an average of 2-3" tall, and 4-5" wide. I've been thinking that I should make a few of these bowls with a lid, turning it into a box. Let me know what you think. This Red Oak was cut down beside the parking lot where I work, because it was in danger of falling on cars. So instead of seeing it all go to firewood, I rescue it to be turned into bea...

Woodturning a little ASH Box

Many of the woods I use are from trees that are cleared for construction. This is wood that would otherwise be burned or end up in a landfill. To me, it is exciting to find the hidden beauty in a chunk of wood. Even a very plain piece of wood offers design opportunities. When working with plain wood, I often enhance the wood by carving or burning. My carved and burned designs mimic textures and...

Woodturning a Red Oak Box

A change in design brought about this box design. My advice to a beginner carver.. don't start with oak! I should have taken a picture of the failed attempt, but I forgot about doing that. Well done Heather. If you use a dark brown maybe they won’t think hot dogs
I’m thinking corn dog! 🙌
Right!? 🤣
Hello . Love the video, what a novel idea . But what was that tool you used for the shaping and finishing cuts . Great channel 👍.
Thanks for Watching Mbee! This tool is hand made from an old scraper that I had. I learned how to make it on Tomislav Tomasic's youtube channel. Here is the link to his video. ua-cam.com/video/Md1kbKN7iYs/v-deo.htmlsi=E6QdiF_iIVBBPTWz Enjoy!
Where’s the buns for those dogs 😂😂😂😂 I can’t let she who must be obeyed see this or I’ll be making a bunch !!
Lol I won't tell her!
Those look good, Heather!
Thanks Billy 😊
Another thumbs up.
Thanks Robert 😊
Heather sees something while enjoying nature and thinks "Hmm, I wonder if I could make one on the lathe ?". -so sayeth the Amazed Thanks for sharing. Take care. -Mike
Hey! Why not try it! What could possibly go wrong!😆
@@spiritwynd 👍😎
love it,,,but how big are the birds that use it,,,lol
They're fairy birds, so they are very tiny and seldom seen!😊
Nice work Heather
Thanks Pete 😊
Nice👍🤝
That came out really nice, Heather!
A lovely looking work of art Heather, keep them coming.
Thank you Brent!
Well done Heather
Thanks Ruby!❤️
Nice ,Heather
Thanks Jim 😊
Patience required, (more than I have). And I would spend more time fixing mistakes than making good progress!
Thank Val! Just need to go slow!
I find this piece so calming Heather ! Thanks for sharing. Take care. -Mike
Thanks Mike!
Very cool piece...please let me know where you got the patience to do all this fine work...i could use some😊...stay safe...press on 😎Joe
I live on 6.5 acres of forest. That's where I find my peace✌️ ☮️
Great piece!
Thank you so much ❤️
👍👍🤝
Love the pattern. I like the idea of only the rim being decorated as well. I may very well need to steal this idea for an upcoming Live. Great job Heather.
You go right ahead and steal it Doug! It's a pretty easy pattern too
Looks awesome
Thanks Ron!
Beautifully done Heather. Really like the process and the jigs you have made. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Clint
I've had some pieces get "augmented" by my pups, too. Preferences: cherry, apple, oak, box elder.... I've taken to making "decoys" or "bait" and leaving 'em around the shop.
😆 I do that too! He's just found the "decoy" butternut in my shop!
That came out really nice, Heather!
Oh, and I think they're fine without the lids. They look perfect right now.
Superb idea and a beautiful effect. Thanks for showing us Heather.
Thanks Mark!
Thanks for the inspiration, enjoyed as always, great job, Heather.
Hi, I'm a thumbnail creator looking to improve my skills by making thumbnails for more and more creators. You can pay me as much as you want after receiving your desired thumbnail. If you don't like the thumbnail and don't use it, there's no need to pay. Looking forward to working with you!
Absolutely love the design, lots of ideas for future use, and a new (to me) glue to try. Thanks,
Thank you so much! They are definitely fun to make!
Nice embellishment. I like the real beads .
Thank you so much!
Love the bowl and the beaded band. Really adds to the composition. One suggestion, don’t forget grain direction and to cut down hill. My thought about the lid is to ask the question, will the customer support the increased price point? You have the cost of the bowl, the beaded band, and now a lid. If they won’t pay what you need out of it then, no lid. Something to try, make a lid for 1 or 2 and see if your customers are willing to pay the extra. If the lidded ones fly out before the unlidded ones start selling then you know the lid is needed. Just don’t give the lid away and cheat yourself.
My thoughts exactly on the lids! I'm going to make 2 to start. And I was wondering who was going to comment first about the grain direction. I did give it a sheer cut after cutting against the grain, but still no excuse.🫣
You never fail to wow me with how clever you are Heather ! I mean, how the bead-band has enough stretch to just 'snap' on. Love it ! I'm still trying figure out how to make a copper or brass band work w/o a visible seam. Thanks for sharing. Take care. -Mike p.s. yes, gardening is allowed to compete with turning & YT. Among other pursuits.
Hi Mike! There is a way to make a continuous braid. I've done it with paracord but never with wire. I'll attach a link to where I found the directions. Let me know how it goes! ua-cam.com/video/RnrjXQE33Cc/v-deo.htmlsi=Hf-Aqyu4NTWnnzth
@@spiritwynd Decent, and enlightening, video. It gave me an idea on how to hide seams. Thank you Heather.
Nice bowl! Looks good with the beads. Where did you get the beads from? Thank you for sharing.
Thanks! I get the seed beads on Amazon. They are size 11...I think 🤔 maybe 12. They are very close in size, but not close enough to use on the same piece
Baton with a piece of wood or a rubber mallet, not with a metal hammer..... you're damaging your axe. Nobody I know calls cottonwood "white walnut", that's silly!
It's actually butternut. My mistake.
And I told him he was damaging the axe too.
Title of video should be : " Ruining an ax "
What do you think the flat heads for? Hitting it further down won't really damage it. He just needs to sharpen the axe
LOUSY FIRE WOOD. WHEN DRY BURNS LIKE NEWSPAPER AND WHEN QER SMELLS LIKE CAT PE!
It definitely stinks! But I'll be doing some carving, and woodturning out of it.
White Walnut ? I did not know that <in best J.Carson voice> I came here to ask if you can turn something with that embedded pulley ?
The cable tie was still running through the tree, so I'm not taking the chance of ruining my tools
@@spiritwynd 😱Wise move !
Butternut is also known as White walnut! Who knew?!
Very nice! What length seems to work best? What finish do you use on these, if any?
Hi Matt, I usually make them 7-8", most people that use them have long hair and need them longer. I like to use spray gloss lacquer for a smooth finish, so it doesn't catch the hair.
@@spiritwynd Thanks Heather! Sounds great! I love these....
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻✌🏻
That's a nice bowl Heather, even though it came off the chuck once, it's a great result.
Thank you!
Now that is certainly thinking outside the box what a great idea
Thanks Colin!
A box with a top for a top. Brilliant! Thanks Heather.
Thanks Mark!
Excellent job Heather!
Very nice, Heather!
Lovely little box. I like that you kept the bark
Nice box Heather. And so practical when the kids are visiting. A real twofer. I think you really like Tomislav's bedan - at least that's how it behaves.
Since both of us have the tools...we can each make our own wedding rings😀😀
