David Moyes joined Everton from Preston North End in March 2002, signing a four-year deal. He arrived at a club languishing one point above the relegation zone and with one win in their last 13 league games. Under his management, the Toffees went on to win four and draw one of their nine remaining league games, finishing the season 15th in the league and maintaining their top-flight status.
The following season, Moyes led the team to seventh - their highest finish in six seasons - and was named the LMA’s Manager of the Year for his achievement in turning around the club’s fortunes.
Acrosss 11 years in the job, Moyes took charge of Everton on more than 500 occasions, steering them as high as fourth in the league in 2005, leading them on four European campaigns, and taking them to an FA Cup final in 2009.
In this exclusive video from The Coaches’ Voice, Moyes talks us through the tactical evolution of his Everton side throughout his tenure, paying particular attention to a victory over Manchester United during his final season at Goodison Park - in which he identified and targeted a specific weakness within the United back line.

He signed fellaini for united; arguably the best signing united made since Fergie left. Caused no problems in the squad, and god knows how many points he saved us down the years. He did three things very well; was a dangerous target man who scored often enough, and forced the opposition players to gravitate towards him and create space for other players. He gave us an option to play through the midfield from the air with balls that any other player on the pitch would have to flick on, but that he could take down to his feet. Very good option for avoiding the press and retaining possesion. He also did well as arial defence when you were holding onto a game and defending long balls.

I've always felt sorry for Moyes. You get the impression he always knew he wasn't cut out for big club management, hence stayed at Everton for so long reportedly turning down plenty of better offers, but the opportunity to replace the greatest manager in PL history is what it is, you can't turn it down. I hope he finds the right club for himself in the future who trust him to do what he's actually good at, taking low expectation teams and gradually ascending them up the league, cos right now he's got a reputation that's not reflective of his skill or past accomplishments.
Absolutely love this channel btw. Hearing these managers talk, get their philosophies across away from the pressure of a TV panel challenging them is very inspiring viewing.

Agreed. It's sad that his spell at United has ruined his reputation. Two of the best managers in the history of football has failed to succeed at United, so it's wrong to judge Moyes as a manager based on his results there. The fact that he turned an average Everton side into a top four contender proves just how good of a manager he is.

David Moyes as a manager is always laughed at and ridiculed because of his short time at Manchester United but his time at Everton showed what a masterclass of a manager he actually was, taking a nothing team who were persistently languishing near the relegation zone for years, with a transfer budget that matched a struggling team and slowly got them to be a strong contender for trophies, all the whilst struggling with a very low transfer budget.
Granted he never won anything whilst at Everton but he had proven he could take on a struggling premiership team that had a very low transfer budget and make them into contenders. If only Everton had the financial mite of the top 6, who knows what he was capable of. Funny thing is, that chance came when he took on the managers job at Manchester United when Alex Ferguson retired. Even though they have just won the league title, the squad was ageing and nearly everyone in the football world knew this. Moyes had to rebuild the squad but the biggest problem was that a new executive had join the club, a man who had no previous football experience what so ever, but came in with the responsibility of handling players transfers, that man be vice chairman Ed Woodward.
As every manager does, they give the list of players who they want to the person in charge of getting those players. Moyes was no different but here was the problem and in many people's opinion, the downfall of Moyes term as manager was that his list went to a man who have ZERO experience of football club transfer dealings. The result of this is that Moyes was unable to get ANY of the players he requested and ended up making a panic buy, getting Marouane Fellaini. With no new fresh players coming to the club, Moyes was stuck with the ageing players, players who were stuck in their ways and only knew how to play on style of football, that style being Fergusons style of football.
A run of poor results with this ageing squad eventually led to his sacking, 9 months after being given the job. Moyes was like a lamb to the slaughter. He deserved much better than what he got. United treated him badly. If the club had got him fresh new players, he would have been able to have a chance but no, Woodward screwed up due to his non-experience of the transfer market and it cost Moyes his job.

If he was given a chance at West Ham I think he would've improved them which he was showing in the last 3-4 months.

Failed at Sunderland (but every manager has last couple of seasons). Sunderland was simply the wrong job at the wrong time. And I think he did a very good job at WHU. When you look back at that Everton team 2005-2014, they really should have won something during that time so while Moyes deserves great credit as a tactician, I also think he lacked a bit of ability to deliver confidence on the big occasion. I think back to the 2009 cup final and the way they coiled into their shell after scoring rather than trying to play to their pressing strength, at a time when they traditionally gave Chelsea an uncomfortable game. The 2012 cup semi-final against Liverpool when Everton went into the game in great form while Liverpool were in a bit of a mess. Yet again, failed to capitalise on a lead. and, most crucially 2013 when they treated a home cup quarter-final with Wigan as a gimme and got mugged. Perhaps a bit harsh as they didn't have the money to compete. Of course, it could now be argued that they do have the money and aren't competing but I think they could be a big player in the hunt for domestic honours in 2019/20 season.

@@shanewright2772respect your opinion pal. i wanted marco appointed right when back when koeman was sacked and trust him (and unlike others i did stick by him through that awful mid season spell unlike others now pretending they always liked him)
      1) I think he's a bit more adaptable then roberto was, yes he has his style but unlike martinez who played the same way no matter what, he's willing to make tweaks to it. 2) Also many may disagree but when it has been clicking, the football we played this year is the best i've watched (21 years old, been an evertonian around 15 years) and i include the first martinez season in that. yes the results were better that season, but the high press high tempo passing of this team i enjoy even more when its on fire. 3) remember what the man inherited, martinez got a very good moyes team and added a top striker to it, marco has had to rebalance the defence and midfield because our team was in horrible shape when he arrived, and he didn't really have a proper striker this season.. also we were playing good stuff under moyes the previous year and roberto added to that, marco had to radically change it from the bollocks of allardyce (and i would argue to a lesser extent koeman) and that takes time. 4. his track record that for some reason has been shat on a lot is underrated, he was hugely successful at estoril, sporting and olympiakos, he turned round hull and almost kept that awful team in the league (niasse up front was their talisman lol) and his watford team were going really well till we turned him (hope you enjoyed those abusive cunts getting pumped in the fa cup final too) 5. also love the man's down to earth personality. roberto was positive even when everything was going to shit which was infuriating and koeman and allardyce has an arrogance that evertonians don't like, marco has come with the attitude he has to prove himself to us, which i love.
Just a few reasons why i'm a fan of him!

Based many a Football Manager tactic out of your Everton side, David. Still think it's a style that's applicable these days, but just needs the correct personnel. Nice attractive football, with a strong defence. Players came and left, but the tactics remained the same.

I'm surprised Moyes didn't mention how the Baines / Pienaar combination would mix it up with Pienaar staying wide at times and Baines "under lapping" - which he knew he could afford to do because Pienaar's ball retention was so good, as was his ability to find Baines run on the inside with cute and clever play (or if not, he would often draw a foul and win us a free kick in a dangerous position).

Actually United beat Everton 2-0 at Old Trafford that season. Van Persie and I think Giggs(?) scored. I remember it because Fergie used it as a preparation game for Real Madrid which was a few days later. I guess Moyes got confused with the 4-4 from the season before.
