Having qualified for their first major tournament since 1958, Wales were - to begin with at least - just happy to be at Euro 2016. However, under the guidance of Chris Coleman, a squad including Gareth Bale, Aaron Ramsey and Joe Allen surpassed all expectations, with Wales not only winning a group that included Roy Hodgson’s England, but then going on progress all the way to the semi final.
They were eventually knocked out by Portugal, who went on to win the tournament, but not without creating some special memories along the way. The most notable of their victories was a 3-1 quarter-final victory over a Belgium side boasting such talents as Eden Hazard, Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku. Having gone behind to Radja Nainggolan’s long-range rocket, Wales rallied, their indomitable team spirit shining through as a header from captain Ashley Williams, one of the goals of the tournament from Hal Robson-Kanu and a late third from Sam Vokes turned the tie on its head against all odds.
Here, Coleman talks through the tactics he used to beat the second-best team in world football according to FIFA’s rankings at the time, and the fond memories the victory brings back.

Ah yes, that traumatic game for us Belgians.
I can't say that everyone in Belgium was confident before this game because we all remembered that we hadn't managed to beat Wales in qualifications and because the opening defeat against Italy had highlighted many problems. Yet, the successive victories against Ireland, Sweden and Hungary had given some confidence back so the general feeling was quite positive before facing Wales. People started believing that the team could possibly make it to the final because that part of the bracket was "easier" than the other that had Spain, France, Italy and Germany. Nainggolan's goal at the beginning of the match strenghtened that feeling. But then, well, we know what happened.
Thinking about that game still hurts today, but Wales really deserved their win. Chris Coleman prepared the game so well and the players gave everything to earn that result. At least, that defeat showed everyone how incompetent Wilmots was (Courtois openly criticized him after the game) and we got rid of him. Prior to that, criticizing him in Belgium was almost impossible because he was "the one that put Belgium back at the top level". Turns out he was just capitalizing on the players' talent.
It would have been a shame if Coleman's work hadn't been rewarded against a coach whose tactics was "pass the ball to Eden".

In Wales, our feeling was that we'd made a quarter final so anything else was a bonus. We certainly didn't expect to beat Belgium, but we knew the boys would give it a go. I think it was just one of those moments - like Istanbul 2005, Liverpool 4-0 Barcelona, Roma 3-0 Barcelona, Greece 1-0 Portugal - one of those football moments that, if you played the game 100 times, 1000 times, that only happens once. We'll remember this game forever in Wales, and unfortunately someone had to be the losing team on the day.

This is hands down one of the best “tactical masterclasses” on the channel. Coleman has a sublime footballing mind. And WHAT A GAME that was. All these years later I can remember watching it live as if it was last year.

I love that he is honest that he thinks different to what actually happened on the pitch, rather than claiming everything as tactical genius.

Love how he dominated that midfield defensively and attacking wise without them noticing, top class gaffer.

Chris Coleman is one of the best managers in the country and his talent has not really been appreciated especially by Sunderland who expected way too much far too early for a club in extreme difficulty
I was upset to see how he was shown the door, it was a very poor decision by the club they should have stuck with him. i believe he would have got them back to premiership a lot quicker than they are going to, if ever they do so again
Chris and Kit a great management team i hope Chris will manage a great club again he deserves it and it will be a delight to see him on the touch line showing his passion for the game

That 33% of all goals are scored on set plays is an indictment of the modern game.

I had a great day, thanks for ruining it haha. Belgium under Wilmots was awful though. We don't have good Belgian coaches (not good enough for the European or World stage. Glad we have Martinez now, not perfect but better.

Interesting fact, Martinez and your nations former assistant manager Thierry Henry both did their coaching badges in Wales.
