- We just bought a new house. The glass cooktop is ruined! It is covered in scratches. We are going to try to clean a glass cooktop using Cerama Bryte glass cooktop cleaner. This cleaner has worked well for daily cleaning of my cooktop stove. I am not sure if it will clean a glass cooktop that is scratched or burned. Sometimes electric smooth top cooktops are difficult to clean. It is important to take great care with them. Join me and see if I can get this cleaned or whether I need to buy a new one!

Working at a kitchen store, I always hear the story of how a family member dragged the pan, cast iron pan rather than carefully lifting it a moving it. It will still function and maybe keep a beautiful Teapot on it when not in use, then just get a new one later. Plus, I would never use a cast iron Lodge on it ever.
It happened to me too and I'm extremely careful. I'd clean it after every use and still it got scratched ☹️ I'm so sad that I paid so much for that stove and now it's scratched. Brand new 😩
Use a cooktop cleaner and polisher with an automobile buffer. Works like magic, will bring your cooktop to its first year of life!!
I say don't put car wax on it Amy. I suspect that would give off all kinds of fumes when the burner heats up and you don't want to be breathing that
Sorry to see your stove top so scratched. I had a white one at one time and it was really hard to keep it clean. It bothered me that I couldn't keep it nice and white as it once was. Later we had to get a new stove anyhow. I like to keep my appliances nice too.
Im pretty sure i saw a vid with someone using mr. Clean eraser.
I like keeping my stuff as new looking as long as possible.
I have used the scoth brite to buff lite scratches out. I put thick coat on, take wet clean wash cloth and lightly move cloth over stove top, leave it to dry then using the cloth and musle power buffing and i think i repeated. It was several years ago on my whirlpool ceramic stove top like yours.
You can also contact the company that made the stove and ask for the cost to just replace that glass top.
Hope one of my ideas help.
Thanks for your great reviews, i bought the breville 16 cup food processor bfp800xl thanks to your great reviews.
It doesn't look smooth and pretty but those scratches don't affect the ability to cook properly. Just live with it until you can eventually buy a new one. So sorry.
Thank you Linda.
I was curious if cooking across a scratched part of the stove would either further scratch the cookware, or the surface more?
@@teresahiatt1061 Cooking on a scratched surface will not cause more scratches, however, dragging heavy cookware across them will.
Look up polishing marks & scratches out of windshields sometime. They'll use sandpaper in finer and finer grits, wet sanding the glass till the marks are gone (like marks from a wiper blade missing the rubber so the metal has been scraping). I did it with my windshield eventually getting up to 5000 grit wet sanding and it did the job, just took perseverance. I assume it'd work the same for ceramic? :) I like taking care of things too.

I have the same kind of thing you have on your stove only around the ring white spots that look like the ground in and faded and I wish there was a way to just replace the glass.
Hey Amy I've tried using polish any type of polish and a polishing pad (that you can attach to a drill) and it worked really well for me
Thank you Catherine. I may need to get drill mounted polishing pad to try that.
@@EricLearnstoCook It works well!
Does it makes scratches Dissappear?
I would try Weiman Glass Cooktop Heavy Duty Cleaner and Polish. It goes on much like your Ceramabrite. Weiman also makes a product called Cook Top Max, which uses micro beads for scrubbing.
I'm so sorry! We moved into a house with a gas stove/oven. The exhaust was making me sick (migraines). I had to open the window to use it (not great when 90 degrees outside). We replaced it with a glass top. I had a glass top at our previous house and it only had minor scratches the 20 years we had it. The new one I just got was ruined tonight with big scratches on the biggest burner after a week and a half from a pan that said 'glass top safe' on the bottom. I feel sick inside.
I’ve seen quiet a few stove tops that are like that. I’ve tried everything and no such luck it’s like it’s so worn
So sorry, Amy. That would drive me nuts too. I have a gas stove now & hate it , try to never use it. I would still love to have an old coil electric cooktop, always worked for me. I know it's not cool, but they cook good and ard easy to clean. Keep tne faith 🥰
exactly!! I get that aesthetically the glasstop looks nicer but coils are much easier to clean & maintain and cook better🤷🏽
Agree so much.I hate glass cooktops
My new home have the same issue. I moved from West coast to East coast, in my home search most of the homes have these horrible stoves. I thought about putting in a gas line but it is very costly. Major regrets!
Amy….love, love, love our induction cooktop!
This fixed my cooktop: Weiman cooktop cleaner menards
I was about to replace it and tried this. Took spots out that have been there for years.
Ugh, my daughter moved back home last year and she did that to my stove. I wish I knew how to fix it.
Why would you need a new cooktop unless the scratches prevent it from cooking?
Because some people can't control their responses to certain things, I myself can't, no matter how much everyone tried and yelled I was just exaggerating, I can't control it and it physically bothers me, so maybe Amy is like that too 🤷🏻
@@heikization Some OCD medication could do the trick. Far cheaper than a new unneeded stove ot top🤣🤣
@@Albertojedi it's a rather needed purchase though
Amy try Bio cleaner paste I got mine from QVC I sent a box to my son just moved in a house and his cook top Looks like that he said it’s starting to polish it up slowly using Bio cleaner paste
I've just done mine with metal polish a a soft bad on my drill cam up wonderfull
Pad*
Just leave a beautiful stock pot on that burner until you are ready to replace it. ;)
oh im so sorry Amy thats sooo disappointing here you have a shiny new house and then that. Ive read alot of people have those issues with the glass cooktops, but its even more disappointing when you are just new to this house. Im so sorry, hopefully you wont have any other issues to spoil your fun.. chin up
I even you windex to clean the glass but not all the scratches come out.
Did your realtor include an appliance warranty in your purchase agreement? That's a common addition that the seller often pays for... might be worth checking. My only concern there is that the scratches are (probably) only cosmetic so may not be covered. Otherwise, maybe ask GE service what it would cost to replace the glass top.
That type of warranty probably won't cover this. It is cosmetic and the stove top is still functional
We refuse to get any glass/ceramic cooktops. A relative of ours dropped a screwdriver on one and cracked the top. It was almost as expensive to replace the glass top as it was to get a new stove. Also I love using cast iron for cooking the morning eggs, and I'd be sure to scratch a ceramic cooktop. I would get gas, but the wife doesn't want it. I have a cast iron griddle that I can put on the coil tops, but heating is very uneven, so that doesn't get much use. I grew up with a Jenn-Aire (didn't you have one in your old house years ago?) and that was my favourite. You could swap the coils for a full sized electric griddle. Now I use a Kitchen-Aide grill/panini press, and got waffle attachments as well.
Oh that's a shame! There are deep scratches, you will not be able to get rid of them, not even with a sanding attachment for the drill; this would abrade too much of the material and the hotplate could tear through during use. It looks like the previous owner had sugar on the plate and burned it in. As long as the stove works, I would ignore it and continue to use it, there are also special cover plates for ceramic stoves that you can put on when the stove is not in use. That would be an alternative not to see the scratches.
You've gotta either buff or grind it down passed the scratches, any ceramic or scratch remover with a buffer should take car of the problem but it'll take a decent amount of time.
I'd suggest using an electric buffer because doing with manually will take a lot of elbow grease and even more time, I've done this many times using Hope's Perfect Cooktop Cleaner or barkeepers friend for cooktops and it took 90% (with electric buffer) 50%-60% (with regular elbow grease) of the scratches out the deeper ones however stayed.
As for the buffer any auto or hardware store should have them, I'd go with foam first as it'll be more gentle then others, if that doesn't work, go with something a little stiffer, finish up with a polish buffer and a protectant spray or polish.
I personally don't have one however many people I know and their friends have them and they're not super careful which you've kinda gotta be and I'm always having to fix their issues.
Sadly word has spread and now many of the people they know are asking me to fix theirs.
This is also why I have coils cause I just really don't want the headache of having to be paranoid about everything, not that I'm not careful it's more of the what if something happens that really gets to me.
Before you dump it, maybe soft scrub or a cerium oxide polish. I would not use wax
P600 wet and dry , on a power tool followed by a buffing pad on the power tool .
.
You need polishing compound and an air die grinder with a polishing pad
How much
I just realized how much of a spoiled ass brat I am because I would be like honey we have to go shopping. Trust and believe my husband seeing that stove like that would beat me to the car. Him and I are a lot alike when it comes to our kitchen.
Lightly sand your stove top with your cleaner. Good Luck! If it works let me know! Janet
Ugh. That would bug me seeing it every day. A grand for a new one right this minute? No. The 5000 grit wet sandpaper sounds intriguing, I'd give that a try and maybe it will at least minimize the scratches. I'm a gas stove top person so I'm completely useless on this issue. Put up with it for as long as you can stand it (but start looking at new ones for the future).
Hi. If you love your glasstop stove for cooking, what type of cookware do you use? Curious!
Why not try easy off and see if it removes old baked on gunk and maybe the scratches will be less noticeable.
Look on the bright side. At least now you don't need to be extra careful not to scratch it.
That is too bad! GE is a good brand. Is it useable for the meantime? Maybe you can just live with it until your moved in and more settled in before replacing it. One of the pitfalls of buying a used home..
It doesn’t look that bad. The glass itself is probably replaceable unless there’s a part shortage issue with it. If it bothers you, I’d just replace it.
I couldn’t live with that. Everything would stick to it. They’ve got a beautiful house with what will be a filthy cooker top no matter how hard they try to keep it clean.
Your correct she can just replace the glass top, not more than a couple hundred plus repair guy, it will only take about 5 mins top to replac.
@@WannodsPlace I think she said it's almost new. Mine is a couple of weeks only and it's already scratched! This is the downside of glass top stoves☹️

I have a glass top induction cooktop. When I get those white marks on it I carefully scrape them off with a razor blade, works great for me, good luck!
Clean off anything that's cooked on with glass top cleaner first. If that doesn't do it, let water sit for awhile on area & you can very gently and carefully use a razor blade held at an angle parallel to the cooktop(not straight up and down), and gently get under the burnt on stuff- on a wet NOT dry surface.. Of course, you have to be extra careful or you can add more scratches. If they are truly scratches & your fingernail catches on, you're not going to get rid of those. The best you can do is camouflage with car wax & apply in circular motion, let fully dry, buff with a clean dry soft cloth. You can use an attachment in your drill for buffing, but it works just as well by hand.
1200 or 800 git sandpaper with the polish
I wonder if they used cast iron on it.
I was thinking the same thing.
I use cast iron on mine everyday for 18 years and mine has no scratches on it. I believe they scrubbed that with something that scratched it.
@@FurKidsHavingFun Thanks for sharing that. My first time to have a cooktop stove, don't want to scratch it up, but I can't imagine not ever using my cast iron, including a skillet owned by my great grandmother.
Maybe someone used a steel wool pad on the cooktop.
Well you tried. Just live with it for now. I'm sure at some point you will decide what you want to replace it with. Probably an upgrade.
Well when you get a new one Don't scrub with with the hard side of a scubby that's for sure
I can’t believe anyone could do that to a glass top cooker. I don’t think you can do anything. The top layer has been scraped away and glass is very tough. Might be possible to get the top replaced. Good luck
Melt some candle wax let hearden then use a blade to take most of the discoloring out.
Bio Cleaner and a non scratch sponge and a razor blade for spots.
glass polisher with electrical buffer
Leave it alone if it works.
There are a few good videos on UA-cam to get scratches polished out.
Try 1200 sand paper
Scratches are like cracks in the glass. You can nog get rid of it. Hence just buy a new glass top that should not be a fortune.
So sorry for your discovery! If you find out there's nothing that can be done ~ just put a pretty or useful trivet or a lovely tea pot on top until you can replace it with something else. Keeping fingers crossed for ya girl! 🤞
Amy, I have a 14 yr old Whirlpool stove. Their brand cleaner was the best ever!! BUT as with everything these days they changed the formula & now it is junk! Mine is nowhere near as bad as yours. I am careful but the hubster is not 🙄 I also have used for many years the Pampered Chef brown rubber scrapers. I swear by those & my Whirlpool cleaner. Now I am using Bar Keepers friend for ceramic cooktops but it is not near as good as my Whirlpool cleaner. The Cerama Brite does not compare to the Whirlpool cleaner either in my opinion. I wish they had left it alone! I also started using a little bit of Dawn Platinum on it to cut the grease which works well. I still use the Whirlpool protectant because a bottle of that lasts forever. But it will never look as good & I have to remember it’s age. IF I could I would keep the hubster out of my kitchen! He is like a bull in a china shop. I would love to have a gas cook top. i looked into converting to gas since we have a gas furnace but it was crazy expensive.
I honestly doubt you will be able to save it. Maybe wait till you get moved & get over sticker shock before you buy another 😎💕
Car wax?
Jerk it out and replace with a modern gas cook top. Keep the electric oven. Yeah, not as easy to keep clean, but way more durable. If the gas can be brought in easily it will be a better unit all around. Got one in my all-electric home kitchen island, set in style, cook top and oven all one unit. Got some small damage. Crazy expensive to repair/replace.! No way to get gas to the island, house on slab. First time around for this type of cook top for me. Never again!
3000 grit wet sandpaper
Live with it. If you use a wok to cook you obviously need to move it around to toss ingredients which will inevitably scratch. It looks to me like a cooker which has been used for its purpose not an ornament. Mines the same and not much you can do.
WOW, LET'S SEE WHAT HAPPENS 🫖
If it’s a real scratch it’s hopeless; a scratch is like an actual cut in the glass
Automotive polishes and a drillmounted buffer pad will soon bring it back to visually new, ceramic is deliquet dragging pans over the surface is a sin!
I can't think of anything that would get those scratches out. I've just noticed your left handed like me.
I had one of those; found it very difficult to keep clean, spills had to be removed right away or were difficult to lift off. Save your money and get gas cooktop. Easier to keep clean and better cooking performance.
Not paying the cost of having a gas line put in.
@@1Mhoram9 ok
you will thank me later, purchase a product from amazon called the pink stuff its like a normal glass spray cleaner and wipe the liquid with a magic thin erasser
U don’t need to use all burners
Just put ur pretty pot on it
It’s a cozy decorative looking kitchen
800 grit sand paper and your cleaner.
Sending my love Amy don’t know much about induction cooktop but if you do get a new one I recommend a gas stove gas is way better than anything else cooks better faster.
LOL it looks a bit like my cooktop
Ya should have tapped the seller for replacement costs at closing... or price reduction
Hi I have sent you an email for collaboration. Pls have a check.
Try a Mr Clean Eraser.. that is what I use on my glass cook top.
Ceramic polish plus a sanding machine would fix it.
The glass cooktop these days is highly inferior to those in the early 2000's on until somewhat recently. Those were not solid black but, instead, gray/black and speckled, cleaned very well and and did not scratch easily. Now with the first use of a black glass cooktop there are likely odd spots and scratches. Manufacturers are making lower quality ranges with a lower quality glass and unless people have had and used the electric glass cooktop ranges of not that long ago they do not realize how the the quality ahs gone downhill and is not acceptable for the money spent. I'm ready to go back to a coil top range instead of a scratched and stained black glass cooktop and not be constantly cleaning the range.
I don't know about the old versions being better quality. I think people have preferred the straight black instead of the speckled so that it what the manufactures moved to. It is not too difficult for me to maintain the glass top. I was just handed this one when we moved into the house. The previous owner didn't handle it properly so it is scratched. One day I will replace it. Thanks for watching!
Oh I pray it works!
Thank you Christina.
I hope they knocked some of the price off for this, so sorry.
Yay! First!
Gas is a lot better
TERRIBLE TERRIBLE invention for people who cook. We should sue these stove people for money back. BUY ONLY IF YOU DON'T COOK AND USE THIS GLASS COOK TOP
Electric glass cooktops are garbage
I didn't build this house so it is what I have to use. But....I can cook on a hot plate and still make a good meal. A good cook can make food on any heat source. Thanks for watching.
IF NO ONE BOUGHT YOUR OTHER HOUSE YET YOU COULD SWAP COOKTOPS, OR ENJOY A SHOPPING SPREE TO BUY A NEW COOKTOP 🫖
