By listening to Hilary Hahn you realize how powerful the notes on her violin are. Moreover, she always seems so genuinely in awe of the great ensembles she plays with.
This is the best performance of Bach Concerto No. 2 I've seen. The tempo, pitch, and dynamism are astounding.
As a child, I would listen to this concerto at the public library with DAVID OISTRAKH. My violin teacher would tell us that he was one of the greatest violinists of our time (early seventies). Highly recommend listening to that recording, which also features a young Isaac Stern. Eugene Ormandy, conducting the Philadelphia Orchestra. Yes, Hillary Hahn is great, but I thought I might share David Oistrakh's great performance.
Yeah, my favorite converto

Altough I think she prefers the tempo a little bit faster, she is sometimes really pushing. But in the end, she's from another planet.
ฟังไม่เคยเบื่อ เป็นบุญที่เกิดมาได้พบสิ่งที่ประเสริฐสุด
She is simply wonderful! She plays everything brilliantly, but especially Bach.
shes so goddamn skilled 😭😭 honestly i stan her shes just an amazing person all around
This version is much better. Hillary Hahn plays things very flat. This is played with character!! ua-cam.com/video/QyZIU--9q88/v-deo.html. This is where you go to listen to Bach!!
@@infuriousone5225 I am aware of the link, thanks. But I still think HH is wonderful! :)
Who is she by the way? first time I saw this live
Yes really. Agree.
Hilary is the goddess of violin.
*GOH! Julia Fischer is the #1*
@@arodbkny They both are amazing, but I personally think Hilary is in a class of her own...

My favorites are Julia Fischer, Janine Jensen, Ezinma, Hilary Hahn, and rising Stars Nikki Naghavi and Maria Duenas
Totally agree.
Ads in a concerto. Sacrilegious.
Agreed
At least they r in between movements
The list of products I will not buy because they have ads in UA-cam videos is getting longer and longer...
Haha!! *sacrilegious*
That's why I use UA-cam Vanced.
Fantastic performance. Hilary Hahn achieved an exceptional level of virtuosity. She is the best violinist of the century- perhaps of all time...
Yes she is fantastic, but maybe best of all time only for Bach. There are many many also fantastic violin players over there like Janin Jansen or Maksim Vengerov, Julian Rahlin....
@@stanislavmilovanovic1732 Hello. I'm from Fort Worth, Texas. She is my favorite violinist..Greetings..
Yes Hahn plays a lot of Bach’s pieces
She is a wonderful violinist in all respects The joy that emanates from her being is palpable. The greatest ever ? A categorical claim.one must say. I'm thinking perhaps Heifetz, perhaps Oistrakh perhaps Kogan.
She is absolutely a brilliant violinist. I love her intensity and that little smile. She obviously enjoys her music.
Definitely! No sign of worry
I love that she applauds the other performers. Very classy.
more than that look at the start of the 3rd movement, when she plays unison (hope is the right english word) with the violins and she turns to look at the violin lead like sayin " I love to play this with you guys". Those little thing are so meaningful, and also show how much she likes to share music with fellow musician and communicate. She's so above amazing
And she isn't a Diva she portraits herself as a common person just like us that happens to be amazing in what she does. After all she is an artist that had an everyday lunch with Brett and Eddy from Twoset Violin like it was a picnic of sorts. That's just how chilled she is. She is an amazing person besides being a great artist.
The thing that I love about Hilary Hahn is that as much as we are in awe of her, she always seems so genuinely in awe of the great ensembles she plays with.
❤😂🎉
We love Hilary!!
Everybody loves Hilary Hahn.
Greatest musicians like great painters are known by a single name: Bach, Rafael, Rubinstein etc, etc.
@@Bacholoji And You John Sebastian
Hahn voices Bach so emotionally, so sweetly. It's such a delight to hear her beautiful interpretations.
It's tempting to analyse Bach's mathematical and technical mastery (and the beauty) of his scores. Who else has their mind blown by his mirror fugues and inverted canons?
Hilary makes his concertos "breathe".
Thank you ms Hahn for what you do. In your hands, his music is a child full of wonder. The technical processes under the skin, the "soul" looking out to the world.
She is so confident while playing and the notes are so clean 🎻👏👌❤️❤️
I love how she plays the string crossings at 2:29. So many players are so aggressive with these whereas she seems to just caress the notes from the violin yet still with such beautiful tone projection.
Thank you, MG, for that observation. For those of us who are keyboardists, we would not immediately appreciate that nuance or refinement.
As observed above, I made a fortune as a young man playing this to West End crowds. Young and confident, I just used to belt the stuff out, ESPECIALLY the passage you mention, and the audiences loved it. With maturity I played more expressively and in 1961 at Witanhurst I was priveleged to have a consultation lesson with Yehudi Menuhin, playing the E major solo Prelude. "Too expressive" he advised: "Don't try to interpret Bach: let the music speak for itself". I now tell my students: "Add a LITTLE expression, but not so that people notice. Too much would constitute distortion". For a lesson in how to play Bach listen to Trevor Pinnock's D minor harpsichord Concerto, itself an arrangement of an earlier violin concerto. It's a non-stop barrage of of galloping semiquavers: FANTASTIC! Not many "caresses" there! There isn't a "right" way, as long as one performs with integrity. Beverley Nicholls wrote in "Woman's Own" March 1958 the headline "BACH SPOKE WITH THE VOICE OF GOD. KEITH RAMSELL IS HIS YOUNG DISCIPLE." I can live with that!
Actually the orchestra is making a big mess around that time and for a few seconds afterwards.
Yes
Excellent observation. Subtle, brilliant playing.
I really love the joyful expressions on her face in the third movement. It emphasizes the joyful character of the music.
Yeah.. look at 16:20!
11:12 min was a moment of such perfect beauty that only a great composer could have composed it and only a great violinist could have played it.
... when she plays Bach : speechless ... ♾
Not only a genius musician but a genuinely beautiful human being. Thank you Hilary.
Indeed, Hilary's bach is divine! This performance is from heaven. ❤
I once read a review that described Hilary's newer Bach interpretations as "unabashedly romantic" and I couldn't help but feel that it fits exactly.
I think this is the last performance she did before going on her sabbatical. I’m excited to hear her play again!
@Lennox Damian shut up bots lol

At 5:23 I literally gasped when the harpsichord came in with that chord 😍

Glorious in every way. The bass line is particularly soul-stirring. What wonderful sounds.
This performance was given on 29 August 2019 in Saanen Church (Saanen, Switzerland).
It was the gala concert of the 2019 Gstaad Menuhin Festival.
Violoniste captivante, une maestria qui lui fait honneur.Magnifique allegro.Merci Hilary.
Hilary is "the goddess of the violin..."🎻🎼🎵🎶
Absolutely wonderfully performed. There is never any doubt that this violinist will perform outstandingly. Extremely talented lady.
I love how she smiles at the other musicians :)) That connection makes the music sound like a truly shared gift
Hilary Hahn is one of the greatest of all times! Simple like that!🎻
There's a wonderful rapport between Hahn and the harpsichordist as the frequent eye-contact between them highlights. This is a beautiful performance and Hahn is reaching new heights of virtuosity with each passing year.
A first class performer needs first class accompaniment. This is an example.
He is director of the orchestra, and communicates with soloist.
Absolutely
The harpsichord is almost inaudible under all the other instruments, as in a lot of recordings. Is it a sound engineer problem? Do they need a mike on the harpsichord itself? I want to hear it.
@@alexandermackay-smith2364 It seems to me intentional. The harpsichord is almost a percussion instrument in this arrangement.
Finally a 1st class audience who don’t clap between movements, god bless you!!
Welcome to Germany. In my experience most everything there's first class
Is it because Germany is a musical country?
Matt Groters Hello, I hope you’re fine. If the piece is barroque you should clap. Don’t clapping between movements bore almost at romantisism with Felix Mendelssohn like a partidary.
@@danielosorio5113 pero el surgimiento de esa tradicion no tiene nada q ver, no aplaudir es una tradicion ya establecida y no debe violarse.

All in this piece is perfect, but the minor variation of main theme that starts in 2:18 is just wild
Some of the most enchanting music Bach ever wrote and he wrote a metric ton of enchanting music
The Adagio is beyond words!
The closest thing to raw, pure emotion in all of music!
Hilary Hahn is one of the most brilliant, utterly human, yet utterly divine, playfully joyful yet deadly serious, and yet completely "feminine" violinists - due most of all to her very particular blend of precision, strength and delicacy (feminine is the highest term of praise in my book).
She is indeed one of the most splendid and shatteringly gifted artists in the contemporary classical world.
For instance, she both lays her dazzling artistry at the disposal of the audience, but, more importantly, of the mind of the goddess that is Bach, and yet she is not really present at all. Whilst she plays, only the art of music is actual.
She is nothing less than "Shakti armed with perhaps the greatest violin bow in all of creation". Her playing is in fact a work of divine veneration of what is greater than us. Quite the opposite of a masculine, preening self-admiration.
It is just pure joy to watch.
Observe the way she returns to full existence at the end, and beams with delight at what she and the orchestra have done in in the service of Bach, and of the divine.
I cannot contain my delight and tears and compulsion to dance. If the goddesses suddenly brought my earthly existence to an end, in a delectable summons to sit at their feet in playful life evermore, after hearing Hilary play the final allegro assai, I would know that my few moderately commendable moments on earth had found a suitable consummation. Provide of course that those same divine powers also granted such an afterlife to my several girlfriends, and we could all meet JS Bach for a chat over coffee and biscotti.
Even if Hillary keeps lots of lovely fluffy kittens, but occasionally forgets to give them quite enough creamy milk and soft chicken nibbles, because she is busy with hours of rehearsal, even that rather serious moral faux pas would be forgivable.
Every young person in their education should watch and thereby be in awe of the scale of excellence, and radiant life-positivity, and pure altruistic love, that life can attain.
BTW, the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen are rather good too 🥰.
Love, andrea
Just beyond words…😀
The second movement is one of the most exquisite in all of classical music. Hahn's interpretation brings out all of the gorgeous melancholy. As close to divine as it gets.
Absolutely agree.
Just at the roundabout ending of 0:54, HH just dies away like magic,
I'm just thankful for being able to see Maestro Hillary Hahn performing!
I wish I could have attended this concert in this lovely church, seated in the front row, and live forever listening this beauty again and again...
Dude, the whole orchestra was on point. What a level from thre harpsichord guy for conducting and playing. It just shows the level of preparation they had.
Yah…
J.S.Bach ..un génie ...quelle interprétation !!Sublime ...Bravo à cette orchestre !
I love when Hilary Hahn plays J. S. BACH Concertos and Partitas!
This is the first time I’ve ever heard this as it was intended to be heard. I’ve been playing an abbreviated version of the first movement for the better part of a decade in an App Store game called Magic Piano. It’s always been one of my favorites and I figured it was finally time to hear it as Bach meant it to be. Even more beautiful than I could have imagined! I’m so glad that I’m aware of this song. As silly at it sounds, I have that game to thank for an interest in classical music that I’m not sure would exist otherwise.
Beauty beyond words - both Bach's work and the performers' interpretation here are sublime

It's wonderful to get to see Hilary Hahn performing - perfection in technique, style and sound and interpretation. Wonderful how the orchestra works in accompaniment. Nice harpsichord, lovely auditorium!
Bach fans must be delighted with this violin version-have heard it on piano (Cyprian K) but prefer it here. Thank you Ms H.
I made a fortune playing this in West-End arcades 60 years ago to huge crowds. Started in July 1958: same November bought a house in Islington! Folk may/may not "understand" the music, but by gosh they recognise good stuff when they hear it! (P.S. met some nice girls too!)
That sounds like a lot of fun.
Youth not wasted! No regrets!
@@sagnikpaul233 It certainly was! And marvellous practice, too.

Always a smile on her sweet face!
How can anyone dislike music so pure? And the connection between the players is admirable.
Some people may dislike this because it's a classical orchestra, and not a baroque one. I must admit that I ust get accustomed to its sound when I hear it. The baroque sound, is imho, what it's meant to be.

Glorious music. Hahn is an enchantress! ❤
The first movement has long been my favorite piece of music. But the adagio jumped out at me in this performance like in no other I’ve heard. What a stunning and mournful performance! The depth at 9:50 was captivating!
There is lots of joyous music in this world, but nothing is more joyous than Bach's concertos.
The style of this concerto and its structure are inspired by Vivaldi

Hilary Hahn's elegant glance at the orchestra (at the beginning of the third movement - 15:00) is no accident, but I am delighted by the magnanimous and charming smile with which Ms. Hahn accepts a misplayed note from an (otherwise brilliant) ensemble. Respect!
It's a pure skill to play this piece of music but is a top notch to write it.Joh.Seb.Bach stays alone to this day as the best composer of all time
Surely, one of Bach's finest works and hence one of the all time finest works in music. Played to perfection by soloist and orchestra with crystal clear sound. I don't see how this could be improved.
Ugh.... the clouds lift, the sun shines, and all the wrongs of the world melt away when Bach is played.
@greenviolist34 Yeah! Totally! You name it
The tempo of the
Allegro assai is superb especially the G #m episode
Imagine playing this from heart. How is she memorizing all these notes? She must have some kind of photographic memory, but for notes. And for me with Bach, you never know what comes next, if you haven't listen to the piece a 100 times. Also, it looks so easy the way she is playing it, her body movements, articulation, like she is playing table tennis, or a dancer. So impressive.
She plays with perfect technique in every period of music.
but there‘s something to her bach that‘s got me on the edge of my seat
This is so beautiful. What a timeless, wonderful piece played so well.

Being a one time main stream pop/rock fan, there is so much classical music that I have never heard. Indeed, it is only in the last few years, during my retirement, that I have begun to listen to music such as is in this video. The more I listen, the more I am smitten. I find the whole performance so relaxing and enjoyable. Clearly age is a factor, but so is Hilary Hahn. Watching her and listening to this piece is a real tonic!
Now this is great! Simple setting small gathering!! No unnecessary applause!!

I totally agree, simple but sweet!
Thank you for giving us this gift! Pure joy for me, the listener, to see the pure joy for Ms. Hahn as she brings Bach alive.
This was my first encounter I had with classical music as I do still remember vividly every time I heard Bach is like heaven!
Look at her smile at 16:20... you can see she is in love with Johann Sebastian.😊
Fantastic! The music is great, but the playing so elevates it that to my ears it sounds like it could be the finest violin concerto ever written.
Okay, this is definitely standard repertoire for a performer like Hilary, but one cannot get too much Bach, and this performance is perfection! Thank you for posting.
