After admiring waistcoats and vests for the last couple of seasons I decided it finally time to sew a waistcoat. I love the way you can style them in so many ways - with the uber popular denim midi skirt, with wide leg trousers, with a t-shirt underneath, without a t-shirt, in high end fabric for an evening look plus it gives me massive Rachel, Phoebe and Monica vibes from the 90s Friends era, my heyday!
I chose Butterick 6901 because I liked the slim fit, classic design and it also includes a wide leg trouser sewing pattern, which looked good too. You can find links to the pattern and fabrics I used below.
I chose our linen cotton mix fabric in navy, it is such a great fabric to sew with and wear. It presses and sews beautifully and is available in a wide range of colours including neutrals black and white.
I cut a size 12 at the bust and graded to a 14 at the waist. I also made my usual high round back and forward shoulder adjustments - you can see a tutorial on this on our channel (see links below).
The construction of this sewing pattern was a lot of fun. It includes fake welt pockets, which are quick and easy to sew and it is fully lined.
I chose to use a traditional tailoring lining method and have created a step by step tutorial video for you, which I'll share next week.
It worked really well and was a lot of fun.
I'm so pleased with how sewing a waistcoat or vest turned out, it was a quick project, but had enough interesting sewing details to give it just the right level of challenge to keep me interested.

I remember my aunt gave me a pattern, I think it was vogue, back in the late 80's, i made two, one was in a brocade with a satin lining back, the other was grey flannel, i lived them both❤

Back in the day I would go to work in a “waistcoat” in a shiny purple brocade with a silk lining. It was da bomb !😊

I sewed vests for myself and my 2 sisters back in the 90's and we loved them! So happy to see them make a come back. Can't wait to sew one for myself now. I love yours!

I can really relate to your lack of sewing time! Have to sew in little snippets of tasks. I love this look and are going to do it in a cream color and...the pants! Thanks for your fun and tech help.!😄

I love it! I'm a knitter, I haven't sewn anything in a long long time, but knitters are making similar vests just like that with actual pockets. They are really in this year! You really make me want to sew again, it goes much faster than knitting. I'm in the USA, North Carolina.

I felt like that in the beginning then just kept getting drawn to them and it honestly was such a fun, satisfying project.

That's a great vest, Lucy! One thing I like about sewing is being able to make a garment that fits really well.
I look forward to learning your lining method. Thanks for taking time to make these videos. 😊

I liked your overview of how to do the lining, but I'm wondering how the pattern instructs one to do it... I'm looking forward to your next video, and to giving the proper tailoring technique a try!

I love waistcoats, made a few back in the 90's (or could have been earlier?) and still have them, they just don't quite meet across the middle now lol.

If you put buttons on both sides, could you use linen for the lining, and make a reversible vest?
