They even changed the packaging where the "cardboard" box was now paper thin and the wrapper was smoother and much thinner. Same thing with Larabars- a few bites and they're done. I no longer buy either which is satisfying. Honestly, this shrinkage stuff is good motivation to create your own. Instead of buying it, make it yourself at home.

Food brands- buy a store brand vs high-end brand and make that food at once, like ice-cream. Then serve the same flavored ice-cream to your family or friend and they eat both to see which one's better, worst, or the same. It's litterly the same thing. If you agree please like it 😀
Used to do sales for an ice cream company. You'd find exactly the same product going in the branded packaging as whats going in the no name container. The only difference was the label & the price. Obviously the artwork cost less on the no name packaged item, but pricing is determined between the supplier & the shop
Here in Brazil there is a law that says the companies must print the reduction clearly, but it doesn't help much because everyone does the same and we end paying more anyway.
One tactic I use to track the price of an item is take the sticker price and divide by the amount to get your $/oz or $/lb, and save it on a phone app. I then shop at multiple different stores using these price rates as reference. I'm thankful to live in an area that has fierce competition among grocery stores, so I can always plan trips based on the lowest price, but I really feel for those who only have a select number of stores within a 10+ mile radius.

What’s funny is in some cases if you watch the prices, store brand or regular sizes can get you more for less. A FAMILY SIZED special K was $5 but two regular sized was like $5.50 but I got MORE cereal.
This has been going on for years. I’m old enough to remember when a single size cup of fruit at the bottom yogurt was 8 ounces. Then it shrunk to 6 ounces and now you’re lucky to get 5 ounces. I just buy the multi serve plain yogurt now.
I remember the yogurt at 8oz. When they feel like they can't shrink anymore, they will start reducing by small increments (fractions of oz. e.g.). This is something I learned from merchandisers when I worked in a craft kit maker company. "Oh, just give them two fewer pipe cleaners in this one ", etc. Two fewer pipe cleaners x thousands of kits saves them money.
This has been happening for decades. Regular-sized ice cream used to be 1/2 gallon and now it's 1.5 quart, and costs way more. Sugar was 5 lbs and now it's 4 lbs, and it costs more. Most of the brands use the same tricks to rip people off. I refuse to buy certain things anymore. And no, the store brands don't always taste the same as brand names; but I'll settle for the difference in taste to not be price gouged.

You can "be aware" of it all day long. That doesn't help. You still have to buy necessities, whether it be food, toilet paper, health products, etc. We know we're getting screwed, but all we can do is watch it happen. You can't eat air.
I've noticed it with canned dog food. I have 2 small dogs and feed them half a can, each. I use food scales to portion out their food so they equally get a portion. The can says 374 grams total, so per dog, they should get 187g each. In the last 2 weeks, I haven't been able to get 187g per dog. When I weighed their food today, I got 351g from the can, and that was after scraping out as much as I could possibly get. Before inflation, when I would open these cans, it would be to the very top, now there is a 1/2 gap at the top, but the weight of the cans never changed.
I work in a grocery store and our prices ring up on a barcode made into the packaging so good luck changing tags around. Not to mention our cashiers know eggs aren’t .99 and we have cashiers who stand over you at self checkout.
This has been going on for many, many years. A typical bar of soap comes to mind. A 5oz bar used to be "bath size", "personal size" was 4oz. Now "bath size" is 4oz. and "personal size" is 3.2oz... Lately I've noticed a lot of products can only be found in large size. I guess that makes sense, since they want to get more of the product out and on the shelf. But not everyone can afford to buy in bulk.
Back when Ice cream cartons went from 2 quarts to 1.75 qts. and now 1.5 qts., I called the phone number and asked why and complained. The woman said the reason was so people could still afford ice cream. I said, "have you ever thought about this?" I had four kids home at the time . I told her that when I could get 2 qts that would be just enough for all of us. Now I have to buy 2 cartons to feed all of us. So instead of say $4.00 for one, now I have to spend $8.00 for 2 smaller cartons. That's affordable?
That's not really a good strategy unless you're getting delivery as the money you save at the store goes into paying for gas so you're not really gaining anything.
Fast food has also been doing this for a loooong time. Taco Bell burritos used to be decent. I had to argue with a MANAGER about the size of a ‘scoop’ of beans. I order the same thing every time and he tried to tell me it was the same

Stealing is a factor that every company takes as a factor on a yearly basis. And you also have market prices for certain products like poultry, fruits, eggs, etc. Farms start selling their eggs at a high price because they had a bad season. Who do you expect to take the loss on it? The market? The workers? The farmers? It seems like youre asking everyone else to take the loss so that you can keep getting your groceries at the same flat rate. It doesnt work that way.
Pasta sauce used to come in a nice 32 oz jar at a reasonable price, now they come in 24 oz and cost more! Sometimes I end up having to buy two jars because 24 oz is not enough! Screw these companies who resort to these anti-consumer tactics!
The price usually isn’t the same, at least not for long. Take ice cream, for example. For many brands, the half-gallon size was reduced to 1 and 3/4 qts, then to 1 and 1/2 qts. But the fluxuation in price between the usual price and the sale price is greater than the proportional change in volume, in my opinion. The big picture is that both the volume was reduced and the average price went up, so the price per unit volume has been increasing. The price of everything is increasing, so shoppers who care about that just have to be aware, as you say. By the way, the reduction in size to 1 and 3/4 qts was an improvement, because it fit in my freezer more easily.
I've switched to Aldi. I used to buy thr Kodiak protein pancake mix.... almost 5$/box and the Aldi brand is less than 3$ if I put both boxes... almost exact same weight side by side... the Kodiak box is HUGE but you're not getting more product... just more air.
i find their brands just lack the flavours the other brands have eg. potato chips, iced coffee, turkish bread, tomato juice,cheese, beef stock, pasta sauces, cereals, biscuits, milo etc...
my parents almost lost our place back in 08’ , I’m 24 now I was a young teen back then. They’d look at the specials coming from the mail and would go to several different stores out here in LA to out food in the table while on a budget, 5lb of tomatoes for a dollar type of deals lol, they made it through and now walk their dogs to whole foods lol

I am a recently retired sales rep, having worked for numerous grocery manufacturers over a 40 yr. career. Sometimes, & probably now esp., it helps to keep packaging the same size while decreasing the weight - thereby eliminating a price increase. Something to consider as well is, every time a product needs to have a package change, there’s a big cost attached. There’s the cost of the actual packaging change as well as new UPC codes, which cost … These costs have to be recouped so pr. Increase could end up being MORE than just lowering the amt. in existing package. Definitely do your (& my) due diligence by checking weight)
I wish companies would spend 50% less on their outrages packiging and flashy writings on how big or good it is and spend 5% more on the actual product. Im sure we would get more for our money and help reduce trash in one little action

As someone who has to drink 3L of Gatorade daily, the 32 oz ones used to work great because they were just under a liter. Then they discontinued them and it doubled in price for the smaller ones. I switched to making my own from powder. I have to have it though due to my kidney transplant. It gets expensive and is very time consuming.
Don’t EVER switch tags on items. It is better to steal than to do that. Most places can’t criminally charge you unless the total amount of items you stole is in the hundreds. However, as soon as you switch tags on an item, regardless of the price, that is fraud. Which is a felony.
Now they should called it Dollar Tree and 37 cents since it's 13 cents higher now from going from 1.09 to 1.25 which totals to 1.37 it depends on how many items your buying there.
A lot of those self checkouts have cameras. So he recorded himself double time. That's definitely stealing what he is doing. He'll get caught one day one way or another
Buying in bulk won’t help. Sam’s and Costco have the same issue. The solution is to buy less. Stop buying excess food and all the fatty stuff you don’t need. Become a minimalist when it comes to groceries. If you keep buying at these ridiculous prices you’re just sending the message to these companies that you’re okay with their shady practices. If you factor in the shrinking of sizes, inflation has been much higher than reported. My cereal was $2.99 for 15oz… now it’s $5.99 for 10oz.

I've noticed it with canned dog food. I have 2 small dogs and feed them half a can, each. I use food scales to portion out their food so they equally get a portion. The can says 374 grams total, so per dog, they should get 187g each. In the last 2 weeks, I haven't been able to get 187g per dog. When I weighed their food today, I got 351g from the can, and that was after scraping out as much as I could possibly get. Before inflation, when I would open these cans, it would be to the very top, now there is a 1/2 gap at the top, but the weight of the cans never changed.
Yeah the potato chip industry has been doing that for years selling us 1/2 a bag of air 🤷♀️

I work in a grocery store and our prices ring up on a barcode made into the packaging so good luck changing tags around. Not to mention our cashiers know eggs aren’t .99 and we have cashiers who stand over you at self checkout.

This has been going on for many, many years. A typical bar of soap comes to mind. A 5oz bar used to be "bath size", "personal size" was 4oz. Now "bath size" is 4oz. and "personal size" is 3.2oz... Lately I've noticed a lot of products can only be found in large size. I guess that makes sense, since they want to get more of the product out and on the shelf. But not everyone can afford to buy in bulk.

Back when Ice cream cartons went from 2 quarts to 1.75 qts. and now 1.5 qts., I called the phone number and asked why and complained. The woman said the reason was so people could still afford ice cream. I said, "have you ever thought about this?" I had four kids home at the time . I told her that when I could get 2 qts that would be just enough for all of us. Now I have to buy 2 cartons to feed all of us. So instead of say $4.00 for one, now I have to spend $8.00 for 2 smaller cartons. That's affordable?
That doesn't make any sense. Things become more affordable by giving you less of it?

That's not really a good strategy unless you're getting delivery as the money you save at the store goes into paying for gas so you're not really gaining anything.

Fast food has also been doing this for a loooong time. Taco Bell burritos used to be decent. I had to argue with a MANAGER about the size of a ‘scoop’ of beans. I order the same thing every time and he tried to tell me it was the same

Stealing is a factor that every company takes as a factor on a yearly basis. And you also have market prices for certain products like poultry, fruits, eggs, etc. Farms start selling their eggs at a high price because they had a bad season. Who do you expect to take the loss on it? The market? The workers? The farmers? It seems like youre asking everyone else to take the loss so that you can keep getting your groceries at the same flat rate. It doesnt work that way.
Pasta sauce used to come in a nice 32 oz jar at a reasonable price, now they come in 24 oz and cost more! Sometimes I end up having to buy two jars because 24 oz is not enough! Screw these companies who resort to these anti-consumer tactics!
Buy from the companies that have pro-consume tactics. Punish the companies that shrink their products instead of just raising their prices.
The price usually isn’t the same, at least not for long. Take ice cream, for example. For many brands, the half-gallon size was reduced to 1 and 3/4 qts, then to 1 and 1/2 qts. But the fluxuation in price between the usual price and the sale price is greater than the proportional change in volume, in my opinion. The big picture is that both the volume was reduced and the average price went up, so the price per unit volume has been increasing. The price of everything is increasing, so shoppers who care about that just have to be aware, as you say.
By the way, the reduction in size to 1 and 3/4 qts was an improvement, because it fit in my freezer more easily.

I've switched to Aldi. I used to buy thr Kodiak protein pancake mix.... almost 5$/box and the Aldi brand is less than 3$ if I put both boxes... almost exact same weight side by side... the Kodiak box is HUGE but you're not getting more product... just more air.
i find their brands just lack the flavours the other brands have eg. potato chips, iced coffee, turkish bread, tomato juice,cheese, beef stock, pasta sauces, cereals, biscuits, milo etc...

They’d look at the specials coming from the mail and would go to several different stores out here in LA to out food in the table while on a budget, 5lb of tomatoes for a dollar type of deals lol, they made it through and now walk their dogs to whole foods lol

I work in the industry of producing food packaging, our customers reduced the weights of packages a long time ago.
I am a recently retired sales rep, having worked for numerous grocery manufacturers over a 40 yr. career. Sometimes, & probably now esp., it helps to keep packaging the same size while decreasing the weight - thereby eliminating a price increase.
Something to consider as well is, every time a product needs to have a package change, there’s a big cost attached. There’s the cost of the actual packaging change as well as new UPC codes, which cost …
These costs have to be recouped so pr. Increase could end up being MORE than just lowering the amt. in existing package.

I wish companies would spend 50% less on their outrages packiging and flashy writings on how big or good it is and spend 5% more on the actual product. Im sure we would get more for our money and help reduce trash in one little action

As someone who has to drink 3L of Gatorade daily, the 32 oz ones used to work great because they were just under a liter. Then they discontinued them and it doubled in price for the smaller ones. I switched to making my own from powder. I have to have it though due to my kidney transplant. It gets expensive and is very time consuming.

Also be very aware that food in the urban area is more than in the city area. There is more competition in the city and that keeps prices lower.

Don’t EVER switch tags on items. It is better to steal than to do that. Most places can’t criminally charge you unless the total amount of items you stole is in the hundreds. However, as soon as you switch tags on an item, regardless of the price, that is fraud. Which is a felony.
