Love the videos. Perhaps a fun idea, give each other a mystery seed and try to figure out what it is while growing it. See who guesses it first correctly?
This is a fabulous idea! I hope they do this someday.
Love it!
@@epichomesteading Im so excited, this sounds like it would be an awesome video!
That's a really cute idea
Love this
Props to the whoever is working sound, it’s nice to hear quality sound even with all the wind!
💛
We finally found great mics!
I think the Camara operator is fantastic. Always moves you (the viewer) right into the shot. Really good job.
@@epichomesteading what mics do you use?
It's *the walking into frame laughing* at the start of every video for me... 😅🤣 it just sets us up perfectly, knowing full well shenanigans are underway.
I love the new names Kev always comes up with like next week it will be "hahahaha we're the tomato bros" and jacque always looking like "Im so embarrassed" lol
@@GeorgeLucas1138 hahah so true. and Jacque always getting the heat for making Kev run sales on products. LOL
I love how chaotic the video edits have gotten, this was really enjoyable to watch
Mad Max: Fury Road
Can we get a video where we meet the genius that shoots and edits the videos?? 🎉
I could definitely get the cucumber smell through the screen.
What that was definitely banana peels
Banana peels
I knew it!
Your cucumber comment made me wonder if I could juice the stems... thoughts?
You can! You can drink the juice @@Katydidit
That "juicy" banana tree @ 1:48 will wreak havoc upon anyone who has latex sensitivities. So if you are allergic to latex, don't grow bananas, and if you DO decide to grow bananas, stay well away from the sap.
I learned my lesson the hard way.
Nearly lost tea through my nose when Jacques said ‘lost some enamel’ 😂
i think jacques needed to do the polish grandma look with a scarf to tie down the hat.
New game: every time Jacques' hat flies off, (safely & responsibly) take a drink 🤣
I'm running out of water and I'm not even halfway through!!
hahahah
Was it just me or is there a black/ dead spot in the video around 4:54
I backed up the video thinking I did something wrong 😂
I would plant the banana in the ground along a fence that gets reflected heat and protection from the wind. Let the pups grow and try to keep five or so bananas growing together all the time. Keep it mulched well fed, and watered. Banana pups are easy to transplant when new ones grow. I live inland from San Diego and have over 100 banana plants and get fruit throughout the year. Once the banana fruits, which takes about 10 months or a little more, chop it down, split the trunk in half and lay it split side down in the soil. That helps mulch your plants too. If you do this you will always have banana plants on hand.
You guys keep blowing me away with these videos and your banter. Thanks for the entertaining (and educational) video!
As for the banana tree; to me, it smelled like marmalade on toast. But, that might just be the breakfast I was eating at the time of watching this video.
11:24 Jacque becoming the screaming cowboy 🤣 brownie points to the editor 👏👏
Lol, the intro 😆 You guys are such dorks and I mean that in the best way possible. Never fail to make me smile ❤
That is the perfect size for transplanting bananas and they will keep trying to regrow unless you remove it at the corm anyway.
My favorite videos start with you walking in laughing! EVERY. DARN. TIME! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🤣😂
If you dig out the root of the offshoots you can actually transplant those and get new banana trees. You need to trim the base of the offshoot and let dry 1 to 2 days and then transplant
This is good true info. Thanks
I agree. Could just let it grow. Pull that frame away.
Blank spot at 4:55? But great video!
Bananas are grown in circles of 3... once the grampa produces it gets cut down and the papa is next, the son grows and then another pup takes the place of the grampa.... 3 generations. I've been growing dwarf cavendish and ice cream bananas in 4 different circles now for 6 yrs.... it's a grass and grows from a rhysome.
Yes, they made a dumb move, I know banana farmers and they do what you said, than when more shoots grow than take them out and put elsewhere or sale, I seen banana trees at the nursery for 50 bucks and only 4 feet.
My friend calls them mama papa sister
one thing about having moved to the DFW area last year that I've learned, it's that us San Diego growers are majorly spoiled. The wind here is no joke! Not to mention the length of season: We have winter, light summer, hard summer, light summer again, then winter. The lack of pests: I love growing zucchini more than anything else and the SVB come at me with a vengeance, which I've never had to deal with in East County. But you guys and your camaraderie crack me up. Thanks!
Welcome to Texas... all I can say is plant super early. Then say a prayer for blessings!!
@@Katydidit thank you! I've got all my starts inside, ready to go!
I could ditch all my Netflix streaming networks and just watch you two non-stop 😂 I'm learning but the entertainment is on point 😂
18:15 Ayo that was a foul lol 😂
Video idea. Put soil against a waterspout of a root stock to root it. Then graft on the ideal variety to propagate your tree.
Someone needs to make a montage of Jacque and Kevin to the theme song of Max and Ruby but with their names instead. That would make the best intro to these videos ever!!!
Jacque and Kevie, kevie and Jacque!
Ahhh thanks for the breakfast laughs Guys 😅 Nearly spat out my yoghurt 😂
Meyer lemons are the best. We bought our house here in Australia 10 years ago and it came with a beautiful established Meyer Lemon tree. It gives two harvest a year of the most incredibly sweet fruit.
It actually inspired me to make that part of the yard my mini orchard 😊
And just quietly 12:21 😍
I was recently on the island of Tahiti in French Polynesia and was able to smell freshly cut banana tree. I definitely smelled banana skin, but I can also see how you could interpret the scent as cucumber also. It's like a really fresh and green banana skin!
It’s weird, I thought the banana stalk smelled like my cellphone.
I love all of your sound effects. You two crack me up 🤣🤣
Thank you, Kevin for creating your channels it has made me make my own garden and it turned out great been watching you for over 2 years now.
Glad to hear it!
As someone who lives in the Caribbean, Saint Lucia 🇱🇨 where green banana aka (green fig) and saltfish aka bacalou is our National dish. The smell from the cut banana tree definitely smells like CUCUMBER!!!! We often pair a cucumber salad with our national dish.
Banana stems are one-third edible vegetation and two-thirds water, but have a good amount of protein and fat plus minerals and vitamins. They are a good source of fiber, potassium, phosphorus, B6 and calcium, as good as the banana fruit itself.
I throw entire Meyer Lemon in my smoothie, peel and all. Fantastic
I could totally see you two doing stand up comedy. Look out Abbott and Costello Kevin & Jacque are on the rise. 😅😅😅
We might!
The sound effects get me. I look forward to these types of videos
7:07 you know it's like when you say you're fine but you're not fine *insert piano*
Looks like you're influencing your neighbor. It appears he is growing a stellar cover crop in the front yard!! 🤣🤣🤣
😂
Hats off to my Botanical Bae Jacques 👒!! We just had 54 mph wind gusts here in northern AZ and gardening was more strategy and making sure all the winter sowing containers didn’t end up in the neighbors’ yards! 😹
Love you guys 😄. Enjoy and learn much from your videos. How about more preserving or recipes of the harvest. Hate wasting food.
I don't know if it's a region difference or what, but in the southeast we also grow bananas, often even as landscaping plants, and they transplant at any size super easy! You'll probably get baby offshoots at the base over time anyways! These and agave are propagated at such a high rate down here! 😂
2:44 that was the best smell I have smelled in my life
Really enjoyed this today. You guys were smokiinngg. Ty so much.
The windy boys are back in town
Kevin w the banana plant: "Lemme give that one a hit," sniff sniff lol
I hope they didn't get any of the banana sap on their clothes. I know from experience that stuff stains blood red (we actually call it "banana blood") and doesn't come out. I found it even stains concrete. I actually have a specific set of clothes I use for cutting down banana trees.
Smells like bushells extra strong tea ☕️
couldnt stop laughing at your cover. Preach! I was outside today in 45 degrees with rain mixing medium in my raised beds because other wise the wind is so bad that I need that sprinkle to control the vermiculite and be able to mix it all without blowing in my face.
But why did I actually smell the banana 🤣🤣🤣
Heavy wind is absolutely the most annoying thing I've dealt with in gardening/farming. Specifically, trying to build anything greenhouse related, especially anything with getting plastic onto the greenhouse. I got a text from the neighbor one time with a picture of one of the cheap Amazon 20 x 10 greenhouses sitting directly on top of his fence
I'm glad I'm not the only one who sometimes gets to pruning a little late. My two lime trees are begging for me to get in there and get to cutting.
🤣🤣🤣 You guys crack me up. It's windy here, too. The chairs keep flying around on my porch.
I have a dull old serrated knife I use for cutting even large bananas.
Also - banana stem cores are used in several cuisines - the white interior part.
Shoutout on the citrus AUDIT!!! 🎉
fyi, the inside of the Banana tree are edibles. Remove the hard outer layers first, cook it in curry etc
The plant is panicking that is a very good description! I love that it does look like it was like oh crap throw out all the shoots I might die
i love the editing style and fun of these types of videos
Hey! Did you know in many countries people cook and eat the core part of a banana stem? That white pale flashy part is edible. In 🇧🇩 we eat that too.
In tropical Aus, it is just about traditional to grow bananas at the end of the septic trench...
Whoever is editing these videos is golden. 😊
Kevin needs to share his supply of hat glue with Jacques
Love from Cape Town, South Africa, love your good natured joking about. Love to all the gardeners in the world reviving soil health. ❤️
We had 85mph gusts once or twice a week for 3 weeks. A lot of damage where we live. It was insane. It's funny watching y'all work in the wind lol
Jacques and his hat - the highlight of my day😊
who edit this vid ... he needs a raise ! 10 / 10
Hey guys! I love watching you guys all the time, I think you're all wonderful and hilarious, but today you made me very sad when you cut out those "extra" banana shoots LOL.
I'm in Florida where we grow bananas everywhere. You can grow them in your climate too, but it is important to understand how they grow in order to get great success, and the very first thing to understand is that a banana tree plant does not like to stand alone, especially in windy climates like yours.
Banana plants grow from a central corm (rhizome). The first shoot the corm sends up would be called the parent plant, it will grow taller than the rest and send out a flower shoot to create the little golden nuggets of creaminess we all love. After it produces fruit, that parent plant naturally dies back (you should leave the debris in the grove to provide the necessary nutrients) and then its offspring (the smaller shoots you just cut out) will shoot up from the corm to take its place and produce your next harvest. This natural growth pattern naturally creates the small grove environment they need to thrive. It's important for them to grow this way because they need the shelter of one another as protection against wind and harsh sun, and it also allows them to make the most out of the available nutrients. This also helps them to create the humidity they need in order to thrive. Growing banana plants together in small clumps helps to protect them against extremes of heat and cold, periods of drought, and excessive exposure. This is essential in keeping them healthy and happy.
If you want a banana grove, plant them in the corner behind your big water tank, give them plenty of organic matter and mulch, plus consistent moisture, and then just leave them alone!!! No hacky hacky trimmy trimmy!
~Much Love!
And so the tale continues of the rebellious citrus offshoots. The plan was clear - infiltrate the garden by disguising oneself as one of the "Desirables". The message was sent to all the neighboring rootstocks through the mycelium underground network. "Anyone brave enough to stand with us, answer the call!" In the moment of truth only two stood tall. For weeks, for months, they learned from their predecessor and started underneath the soil and hid in plain sight by pressing up against a Desirable. They grew and grew, reaching as tall as a Desirable and putting on growth to increase their strength. The other rootstocks too cowardly to stand with them looked on in awe of the Brave Ones. "Maybe the Epic Guardians, the Dragon King and Mighty Hermit, have been defeated!" They all cheered. But at last, the rebels' clever trick was soon discovered. The eyes of the Dragon King and Might Hermit were sharp this day and down the Brave Ones went. The other rootstocks mourned but were not disheartened for the Brave Ones left a final message before their demise. "The path is opened and we will not be denied! Go forth and be free!" Will the Epic Guardians be able to repel the rebellion? Stay tuned until the next Epic: Citrus Prune Saga.
Lol
You can eat the heart/core of banana plants. Also the flower.
Banana plant is 100% edible, and in many countries, the trunk is harvested for food.
They eat the banana tree innards in Asia. You can sauté that in garlic and coconut milk. Very good
I’m screaming. I think the homestead videos are my favorite 😭😂😂
Could you make a Meyer lemon marmalade? That would be like lemonade on toast kind of wonderful. 😋 🍋
Y'all are absolutely so cute and funny!!
Blessings 🌞
You guys are so cheesy...I love it! Cucumber, banana skin, same thing, right! I got a hint of coconut?
Give your sound editor a raise because the sound effects were top notch
Look at them full locks of hair on Jacque! I've always wondered what was under that hat 😅.
Y'all have a great vibe, love the laughing intros xD . i love learning, and seeing all your success!
I like that you questioned your pronunciation of Cavendish! First was correct, but I wish more UA-cam people would use UA-cam to correct their pronunciation! Just ask and it answers!
Awesome guys 👍✌️ thanks for entertaining and teaching us as always!!Next time, air layering the wild shoot!! It's another great root stock to graft for experimentation!!
I love your humor and the editing, cracks me up every time!
I like crazy weather. At moment we expecting snow storm. It’s adds to fun 😂
Love you two together. How about a video telling how you hired Jacque and what makes you click and when you realized it….
4:53 Thought my internet went out XD
We fixed it!
What wind? Here in Indiana, windy all the time. Last frost date after Mother’s Day. The wind just makes things difficult
More info about Pruning Citrus would be great. You said 180... and that really made me question how to know how to directionally plant citrus
My boyfriend's parent's mandarin tree also just LOVES to grow vertical and generates SO many water sprouts. Except they did no maintenance for it for over a decade. The interior of it looked so bad. I took out so much dead shit from it. Smh
I love the chaos
I grew up pruning and finding these so I'm screaming at my cell phone. Cut here take these off.
Thoroughly enjoyed!😂
Would love to see a follow-up video on propagating your cuttings.
I smell the banana and cucumber but there’s a strong hint of butterscotch.
I was picking up hints of pomegranate 😉
"woaa, that's fast" - that's what she said 😎
The banana tree smells just like a Samsung phone
What a strange weather we are currently experiencing in SoCal! Windy, cold, and so much rain!!
You guys are gettin a taste of what your neighbor Oregon goes through each winter 😉
Growing the wrong banana for San Diego. Try "ice cream" hybrid for So Cal. Best tasting banana ever.
Once I got kumquat filled with sugar and kind of instant coffee as a dessert... Seems weird may be, but it works though...
If you separate at the corm, you can propagate more banans
It was just wind and zero rain for me last summer. Plus 110°f temps
Just a normal day in Oklahoma
Wow that banana tree really smelled fresh 😂
