  • The Montreal to Toronto route is one of the busiest air routes in the country, with Air Canada alone flying over a dozen flights a day.
So, needing to get to Toronto for my connecting flight to Calgary, I picked the 0530 flight on an Air Canada Express E175, in Business! See what I thought of it in this video.

7:30 You're right, the E175 isn't rated fly over the Rockies with one burnt-out engine. That why they don't come out west. Typically when AS or UA send a 175 east to west over the Rockies, they're weight restricted.

That's not entirely correct. It depends on the type of "single engine drift down method" approved by the company (& Transport Canada).

Funny enough I am from Brazil and the embraer E170 and E190 just started flying in Brazil in 2009 with Azul and Trip. Because of this reason my first time flying an Embraer 190 was with united from Boston to Washington DC. And my first time flying an E145 was from New York to Boston same year in 2008.

Nice video! Yes, here in the US I have flown Emb 175 quite a bit . It has become one of my favorites because short of the CRJ 900, it has better seat quality and foot room even in cabin class than the average slightly smaller regional jet and it has "nearly" normal or at least a good deal larger...overhead bins than your average skinny regional jet with engines on the tail. Just better comfort all around. Noticable.

Its fun seeing video of the approach into Pearson over Downsview, as since most of that airport (now all of that airport R.I.P) is disused, one of the old hangers is converted into a go-kart race track that i frequent, and the subway station is right below the flight path, so it's fun to get a little plane spotting in while walking to races

When Air Canada first got the E175 (and E190) they flew them over the Rockies. Transport Canada though, did an engineering study and found that over airways, the aircraft was fine, but on some “direct routes” in some temperature conditions at some weights …. the E175 could not maintain a sector MORA + 4000’ on one engine.
Air Canada initially then put an operational bulletin out restricting operations to “on airway” only. This caused problems with ATC, so Air Canada stopped scheduling the E175 west of YYC/YEG.
I understand that the FAA does not put as strict a restriction on US E175s.

I miss the brief period of time when airlines flew 175s out of my local airport. They've since gone backwards to CRJ-200s, which are just the worst. At least the ERJ-145s from the same area had reasonably sized windows.

AC desperately needs to update their cabins with those older blue seats and IFE's. Their regional interiors lack the modern amenities that you find on US carriers. Lots of potential given the large fleets of CRJ-900s and Erj-175s but I think its the right time to invest in further enhancements. Their service quality is amazing and if you add that with a more modern cabin, their trans-border services will only be favored more. Lastly, curious if they look to grow the 175 fleet to help fill the void left by the dash 8 fleets decrease and the CRJ-200's are set to leave the fleet after 2025.

I’m curious what “modern amenities” are missing from these aircraft that you feel are found on US carriers. They have AVOD, USB ports, power ports, etc. Not to mention, how many US regional carriers offer a hot meal on a 50 minute flight?
Air Canada mainline (and Jazz/Skyregional) have had in seat video since 2006, in all classes on all aircraft since 2006. A standard still not matched by any US carriers, regional or otherwise.

No economy gets Biscoff cookies with the complimentary beverage.
The meal service in business is a leftover of Rapidair YYZ-YUL-YOW service

Hot meal in business between Montreal and Toronto, and virtually zip in business class between Edmonton and Vancouver. Western cities always get shafted by Quebec-based. AC. For the longest time, Q400 was all that was available between Edmonton and Winnipeg. Pathetic!

Just flew AC between Calgary and Vancouver as well as Vancouver to Edmonton - had full hot breakfast same as the one seen here. On afternoon service it’s a tuna appetizer plate with wine service. What are you talking about?

We fly them all over the West coast of the US. I am based in Denver and most flying I do in the 175 is west coast oriented, up and down cities throughout the Rockies

Transport Canada weight restricts some flights to comply with engine out performance restrictions over high elevations of terrain in BC. Not sure if this exists in the US though, does it?
