No one is immune to anxiety, not even Navy SEALS. Jocko Willink spent 20 years in the U.S. Navy SEAL Teams, and he served in one of the most highly decorated special operations units of the Iraq war - and he has experienced fear throughout his career.
Along the way, he's learned how to deal with it.
"The first thing you've got to realize is that most of the fear that you have isn't reality," says the former SEAL, who is now an author and leadership coach. "It's just built up in your head."
The best way to get over any fear is to face it with confidence, he tells CNBC Make It: "Go and look at it. Go on the attack. Move towards it."
As tempting as it may be to avoid or suppress fear, that will only exacerbate it, Willink says: "The more you hide from it, the bigger it gets. The scarier it gets. Don't allow that to happen - instead, confront it, face it and get after it."
Willink gives the example of jumping out of an airplane, which he had to do in SEALs training: "The first time you ever jump out of an airplane, it's a very unnatural thing to do, and if you have any sense of self-preservation, you're going to look at the open door of a moving aircraft that's at 1,200 feet above the ground and you're going to think to yourself, 'This doesn't seem like a good idea.'"
But, "if you sit there and think about all the things that could go wrong, that fear is going to grow and grow and grow."
Whether you're about to jump out of a plane or face any other fear, such as speaking in public for the first time, don't back away or delay the task at hand, says Willink.
"When you start to feel yourself lock up, recognize that you're being paralyzed, and take that first step forward," he says. "That first step is the hardest part. Once you take that step towards what you're afraid of, you're going to move forward and things are going to be OK."
Self-made billionaire Warren Buffett, who overcame an intense fear of public speaking, agrees. "Address whatever you feel your weaknesses are, and do it now," he wrote for Forbes. "Whatever you want to learn more, start doing it today."
As Willink puts it: "Don't hesitate. Go."

First (and only) time I skydived, I remember a vague but controllable sense of uneasiness as we loaded our gear and boarded the plane. Airborne, we got to jump altitude (3k feet). Then the door opened, and the view of the ground coupled with the loud rush of air hitting us in the plane and my knees got weak ("wait a minute, what am I about to do?"). Instinctively I knew I had to shut off that voice IMMEDIATELY. I did this by focusing on my next breath, my next footfall, my next hand hold, and just listening to the instructor. When it was my turn, I was only hearing his voice (yelling to make himself heard over the airstream) and I'll never forget it: "CHECK YOUR CONNECTION (we were on static line). GET IN THE DOORWAY. GET OUT ON THE STRUT. ARE YOU READY!? LOOK AT ME! GOOOOOOO!"
Later on the ground, I asked him if anyone had ever refused to jump. Laughing (but serious) he said, "No. There are six of us crowded onto a small, single-engine plane, and there's no room. If you refuse to jump, the people behind you won't be able to accomodate you moving off the strut and back into the plane. If I have to, I'll reach out and knock your hands off the strut, so you're going anyway!"
Yes, face the fear like Jocko says, but just as important is shutting down that voice IMMEDIATELY, like within a second---two, max.

This is true. This man has the a answer in 2 minutes. If you really know something, you know you can give a straight answer. Most other videos in YT on the topic are quite long.
If you have your fear, you'll come out less afraid of it. It is the only way.

One of my students told me that when he discussed his anxieties with someone close to him, like his wife or a close friend, then he found that the moment he started opening up to them, the anxiety decreased-even before he received any advice or support.
Togetherness definitely decreases anxiety. There is a saying in the wisdom of Kabbalah that “a sorrow shared is a sorrow halved,” i.e. when we share a sensation, we divide it up, and in turn it becomes more manageable.
Since it is quite easy to see how sharing our experiences lessens our negative feelings, the question is why do we not use this ability more? Why is it so hard for us to share our fears and anxieties with others?
We are indeed afraid of opening our hearts, letting everyone see that we have certain fears and anxieties. That is, in addition to whatever fears and anxieties we hold within, we usually have additional anxieties about sharing them with others, that it might cause others to perceive us as weak. Since society in general values stronger, smarter, wealthier and fitter individuals, opening up our anxieties to such a society makes us vulnerable to exploitation. We thus need to seek a social environment that would not exploit us for opening up, but would rather give us a sense of faith and confidence that it can help us cope with any negative feelings.
A social setting that can guarantee faith and confidence in its members is one that actively draws itself to the upper good and benevolent force-the force of love, bestowal and connection. It is this very same force that awakens negative feelings in us, whether they be fears, anxieties or several other painful sensations, in order for us to draw closer to that force, and we do so by drawing closer to each other.
If we wish to connect with the upper force and let its perfect quality of love, bestowal and connection fill our lives with a sensation of faith and confidence, then we need to emulate such a quality toward other people-giving them a sense of faith and confidence, and for them to do the same toward us. By wanting to positively connect with others, we then start awakening the positive force dwelling in nature into the connections we create, and we then feel a new sense of faith and confidence wash away any anxieties that we might be holding within.

But that is not an excuse to not use your brain. Fear has value. When you are doing deep thinking, fear opens up all possible ways something could go wrong. If you are working to design a power plant, ignoring fear would be unwise. This particular situation is when quick action is needed. But otherwise do listen to your fear. If it was unnecessary, nature wouldn't give it.

This is the same as recommending everyone 9.5 pair of shoes. Other reasons:
    1. Lack of vitamins - check them
    2. Lack of hormones - check them
    3. Lack of knowledge - get some (in this case, yeah, go attack)
    4. Psychological disorders - get some counselling
And there’re different types of fears and some are pretty close to being not ‘overcomeable’.

Landing can be a little awkward at first and learning how to roll but you get used to that in no time. You haven’t lived until you sky dive. thanks for this comment. I'm gonna start using that technique anytime I'm in a situation that triggers fear.

I believe he meant 12,000 feet, not 1,200 feet. Either is potentially fatal but 1,200 feet hardly give you time for your chute to open.

I am so scared of bugs like bees, wasps , hornets and roaches. Those are my only fears but the roach one is the most paralyzing fear I have. I can’t go to sleep well if I see a roach that night

Since you put it that way, now everytime I find myself afraid to talk to my crush, I'll remember that at least it's not jumping out of an airplane. 😁

Well I’d assume everyone can guess the outcome to that atleast they would be saved from the majority of the fear and subsequent expiration of the fall

I was afraid and scared because people were rude to me after a nasty break up. I literally stopped smiling at people, cut people odd. Yes the Seal is right, but I'd rather jump out a plane 12000 feet up than talk to hypercritical, rude, mainly aggressive ghetto people again! I don't have the strength right now to keep battling and batting away rude, nasty idiots! I learnt just to nod and get away from idiots, especially if they try to flirt. Leave me alone! Tired of facetious, entitled, rude people. No, don't tell someone like me to face my fear! I did that, faced my fears of rude nasty people and got mentally terrorised! I'm taking each day at a time! For you, facing your fear means having the courage to make a decision that you do not need those nasty people to feel happy or complete. The aircraft door in your case is the door that takes you away from those who terrorise you. So you had to make the jump, i.e. take the sudden decision to cut ties from those people and situations that you had gotten comfortable with and not look back. It must have been scary, but seems like you DID face your fear. Congratulations.
