For anyone struggling with the ghost strumming ( like I am) I suggest using • up down up down down• as your strumming pattern, it's a lot easier and sounds equally as good Edit- which is also the original way Vance joy played it in the song

aleroemer94 The way I practiced it was with the song Boulevard of Broken Dreams (Works with any song...). What I did is memorize the strumming pattern and tried strumming just eights. So when I didn't strum, I just did a ghost strum without hitting any of the strings. Hope you understand...kind of complicated...if you want I could make a video and explain it.
No need for the pinky I've been playing for 9 months and I don't use the pinky on the g chord at all I just use the first three but you'll get better with the g chord trust me
For those who r finding it hard to reach the chords then just do: A minor ( Like he said ) Regular G ( Like he said not to do ) And Cadd9 ( Just move your index finger and ring finger down one string each from your G and don't play the E string ) It sounds just as good but it's a bit easier 👍🤷♂️
that's actually not a bad tip, but i personally just learned the original way (both using the G he told and the regular G. And using the C chord, not Cadd9) since i think the G, C, Am are the barebones for guitar playing, imo it's best to just learn the hard way so it gets easier
Raz I feel your pain, Raz... especially when I hear that you get a better tone by clamping your thumb around the sixth string so you can have a stronger grip for lead guitar.

Hi Drue, I found your tutorial amazingly helpful. At first I was very overwhelmed, but after a couple days I picked the strumming up without issue. I found your arrow system INCREDIBLY helpful, as hearing and interpreting the strumming patterns have been the most difficult for me. Its something that does not come easily to me. Could I ask, on the 3rd strumming pattern, could you please make a short video to show how the correct pattern is played? The part where it should be down,up ..instead of up/down. because does that make the pattern u,d,u,d,d,u? sounds rushed when i play it :/ Thanks for your great work. its very much appreciated and has been so helpful
To practice ghost strumming I played the rhythm and ghost strings with open strings at first till I got it down, then moved on to using the chords, it really helped.

Great lesson on ghost strumming, a concept I wasn't aware of. It is much easier and natural. Other tutorials don't cover this and I found them very hard. I'd say this video goes beyond Riptide in teaching value. Thank you.
i reccomend doing each. skill one at a time. what i did was a tempo pattern with each of the chords. then switch between each of the chords doing that. put it all together and you got PBJ sammy bro.

I learned this within months of picking up a guitar. It's only 3 different notes, don't set your expectations so low, nothing worth doing is ever a piece of cake.

Drue James After some research I've found out that the little solo should be played on the B and E string. Play 3h5 on Bstring, Then 0h2 on Estring. Than 3 on Bstring and last open Estring. Little practise but sound more alike the ukulele version.

I learned this within months of picking up a guitar. It's only 3 different notes, don't set your expectations so low, nothing worth doing is ever a piece of cake.

Drue James After some research I've found out that the little solo should be played on the B and E string.
Play 3h5 on Bstring, Then 0h2 on Estring. Than 3 on Bstring and last open Estring. Little practise but sound more alike the ukulele version.
