- Watch Kim turn Melissa into a man! In this tutorial Kim Greene will show you how to chop hair and flock a 3- to 4-day looking beard in this very informative minor f/x tutorial. The beard is applied to Melissa Street and is also a great tutorial on how to "turn a woman into a man" for a character makeup.
Kim has used this technique in a number of films including: "Charlie's Angels" on Drew Barrymore, "The People vs. Larry Flynt" on Woody Harrelson and "The Green Hornet" on Seth Rogan to name a few.
Products used: Real Technique brush, Pros Aid, Flocking Gun, Yak hair, Real Hair
I've been getting a lot of people asking where I got my flocking gun and frankly I can't remember. It's been many many years!

Nothing I would ever have a need for but I enjoyed seeing the process. Melissa is a pretty man! Always wondered how the beard was made. Love watching these videos since I have a fascination with all things makeup. Love you two ladies!
Depends how much is flattened. If it's a small area I would tweeze out the flattened hair if possible and reapply with a small brush. You can also try waving the flocking gun over the area and try to get the current to pull them back up. This will work if the hairs aren't really stuck to the glue. You may not have time to re-do because of tight shooting schedule. Try to make do until after lunch touches and then take off the bad area and re-apply. Fully clean the prosaid remover before re-appy.
Thanks for posting this!!!! I had to glue beard stubble in my short film last year and it looked ok, but this would have definitely looked better. I need to put a flocking gun on my x-mas list now. =)
I am a spfx makeup artist and I really want one of these. Can you tell me the brand name of yours?
Hi! Love all your videos they're so helpful! Would you be able to use something like a salt shaker instead?
HOW COOL!
the gun looks like a vacuum. very cool tutorial.
that is amazing!!! I love your videos so much.. I learn something new every time!
These videos are so helpful. Thank you!
Hello where can you purchase a flocking gun. All of the flocking guns I see are used for cars and wood detailing.
You need to contact a makeup supply house - like Naimies Beauty Supply or Frends or Nigel's Beauty Emporium.
Awesome tutorial!
wow that was fascinating you are so talented! thanks so much for this :) cant waiit for your next one xx
love it! you ladies should definitely put up more FX videos! There aren't nearly enough from accomplished artists as yourselves!
You can also rent them from beauty retailers like Frends for $125 week. I'm not sure what a new one costs these days. If you find one let us know. -kim
I actually worked on Pineapple Express and it's a t-shirt they gave us. It's not a "statement" of any kind. lol
Really cool
This is so amazing!! love from England x
Very cool!!
Awesome video! I've never seen a gun used so this was great! :)
Oh ok cool! Thanks for replying :)
Hahaha! You two slay me. Great video, girls!
Thanks!
Amazing!!! Thank you!
Amazing!!! If you were to repatch an area because the hair has gone flat...would you remove the flat hair first or would you do it on top applying the glue with a more delicate tool like a brush? Can't wait to see more of these videos! Thumbs up right now. ;0)
Wow that's awesome!!
Hey Kim and Melissa, I have a question concerning any ingredients that should be avoided for cancer patients undergoing chemo therapy. I want to volunteer and work with a local cancer treatment center and offer my services free of charge to patients to make them feel better about themselves during their treatment...however I want to make sure that I'm not using anything on them that I shouldn't. I asked two local Dr's and surprisingly they didn't know too much on the matter. Thanks=]
WOW!
I'm not familiar with all the different kinds and pricing of flocking guns but I did find a web site that has lots of options. You will have to do more research to find out what is best for you. (YT won't allow me to add the web precursors but this is the site.) alibaba.com/showroom/electrostatic-flocking-gun.html Also, if you just want to try one first you can rent one from your fav pro supplier.
wow!!!
I would be curious to see what that would look like actually. Hmmmm..... -Kim
is there a way to do it without a gun?
There is a way to make beard stubble, but it is not as realistic.
Using a salt shaker won't give you a raised hair effect...that is why you need the Flocker - it pulls the hair off of the glue!
We really just wanted to do a beard tutorial. We didn't expect her to look so much like a man! It was an added benefit! lol -kim
This is so cool. How does it work?
I bought mine 15 years ago and don't remember where or what the brand is. I found a web site that has some good options. (UA-cam won't allow me to add the web precursors but this is the site.) alibaba.com/showroom/electrostatic-flocking-gun.html
loved it! I have never used a flocking gun.. always hand laid it.. where is the best place I would be able to get a flocking gun?
