I'm a combat veteran.I was trained by the Vietnam vets and fought with them in combat. Every time I hear this song I think of them. The unsung of us. I'm alive today because of them. I have a family now and have lived my life as I promised God. I bought a small piece of property and have lived my days in peace. To my Brothers of the Vietnam WAR . " You are not forgotten and I we will always remember " !
My friend worked at a concert venue for about 20 years. She said the very best, nicest celeb that came through was Huey Lewis. Not only one of our greatest performers, but a truly lovely person. Threw a party for the staff ... the STAFF --- ushers, etc. And thank you, for this song, which epitomizes the Vietnam vets and all those before and after. RIP Sgt. John Hipson USMC We love you, man! xx from Canada PS. loving that Canadian drum kick. :))

The reason it doesn't get radio airplay is because it wasn't a top 40 hit; it peaked at only #18 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. I know--that sucks.
Growing up it was expected to love "Sports". Huey Lewis was a favorite of my parents (especially my Dad). Back to the Future came next and The News became etched into my head as a fun band that had a big part in singing the soundtrack of my child hood. I graduated College in 2003, enlisted in 2005 and it wasn't until 2016 that just by chance I actually listened to the lyrics of this song and it evoked emotions that led to tears. After 2 deployments in Iraq and 1 in Afghanistan, there were times that I wondered if this band could be more awesome. Yes they could. I had no idea that they wrote this as a tribute to Vietnam veterans and rightly so. However, there is a new generation that needs songs like this that seem somehow to understand what so many have been through. BTW, I was "frontline" a lot of the time and when I introduced this to my platoon it became a comforting anthem somehow. Will the band ever know? Probably not, but I still love this song and they unknowingly have reached out to many young men and gave them something to stand behind when the deployments went long, and sometimes your moral compass gets a little foggy. I have seen interviews with Huey and he is so humble he would probably just shrug it off and say that he wanted to reach people. Well, guess what? You did, and you made a lot of guys a little bit better for maybe 5 mins but guys cherish those 5 mins. This is a great American band......Oh, and they also played a couple of other songs..... Show less Reply
Also let me say this song while representing veterans from different generations has a sound that guys would literally get pumped up behind. If America could put the awkward "thank you for you service" into a song, this would be it. This isn't a victim song, it celebrates guys that did their duty and served with their brothers proudly while also effecting the battle space. Salute to all veterans. Some wounds are deep but this current generation has voluntarily sought out evil and prosecuted. The magic with this song is it captures the surreal nature that Vets come across now more than ever. Ambush one day, "check out line" 2 days later.
With so many stories of tragedies involving vets with PTSD these days, this is an important song to consider. And remember: Huey brought this song out in 1983 or '84 -- he "called it" a long time ago.
Thank you !! So many broken souls out there ! Time for us all to reach out in any small or large scale, just get involved, music is such a great healer in so many ways, especially live !! Love you Huey and your band etc.. 💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓!
Actually, the term "post-traumatic stress disorder" came into use back in the '70s in large part due to the diagnoses of U.S. military veterans of the Vietnam War
*Instrumentally, such a gloriously optimistic sounding song..., and yet, such a depressingly dark message lyrically..., concerning the daily struggle and anguish of living with P.T.S.D., while amongst the rest of society that has only known a sheltered and safe existence, and so have absolutely no clue about the hell that you've been through, and will be forever trapped in..., until the day you pass...* 😕
I always think of my dad who served in the Vietnam War when I hear this song. This was my first own record purchase as a 10 year old kid. Top 10 album for me.😎
😲😲😲😲😲😲OMG!!! I am LITERALLY shaking right now!!! For this SCORPIO, IT TAKES A LOT to get me speechless and shaking, like a leaf ready to fall off of an Autumn tree!!! WOW! WOW!! WOW!!! MARIO CIPOLLINA, 3 words, ... POWERFULLY COMMANDING PERFORMANCE!!!! 🥲😍🥲😍🥲😍🥲 There are just no words to describe how I feel right now. (If only I would've been there .... ) THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!! #SoHighOnAdrenaline !!! 💓😎🎸🚬
I was blessed to see Huey Lewis & The News at the Municipal Auditorium in New Orleans back in the day when evening concerts were a thing during Jazz Fest. Epic!
My dad was in Nam. (And Okinawa), My draft number was 001 the year Nixon ended the draft. I will always love him for that, I did eventually end up as a major in the infantry but never saw action. Can't say I'm sorry.
Wow. I remember hearing this song when it first came out -- either 1986 or 1987, I believe -- and it had a good "sound" to it. What is it that they call it -- a steady "four-on-the-floor" beat? But those were the days when you couldn't just look up the song lyrics on the Internet, so you would listen to songs and you would have no clue what the songs were about. I just figured this was just another Huey Lewis "relationship" song. "Don't you know me? I'm the boy next door ... Is that what I was fightin' for?" And you still thought it was a "relationship" thing -- not Vietnam. But now you read the lyrics on the Internet, and it's quite a different story. With this track, Huey Lewis & The News sort of went beyond "entertainment" and started making "social comment".
Huey's vocals sound so strained. The music is great (minus the keyboards which sound wrong) but damn, this is only 6-8 years after another live recording that exists here on UA-cam. What happened?

I wish I heard this on the radio on the FM in Denver, CO. For some reason, most stations don't play this song EVER. This is one of his best songs.

@@christosstamato527 No, you're correct, but tunes generally have to get into the top 10 to get heavy rotation air play.
Huey, you’re a good man . Thank you, from a Navy man. War is never good.
no fakery in live performances back then in my youth. great song. outstanding musicians - very tight band.
We should always remember our veterans. They have sacrificed so much for us. Thanks to all who serve and have served.

I don’t know they know, but to write a song like that…they know.
I lost a few buddies when I flew in the Navy; this song is for them. Thank you, The News.

I love this performance so great !!! Thank you dear Huey Lewis and The News for honouring the Veterans !!!
one of my favorite songs being a veteran myself
Thank you for your service.
The best NEWS lineup: Gibbons/Cipollina/Hopper/Colla/Hayes/Huey. Great band !!
Terribly underrated band. Blusey Huey Lewis as introduced by BOB SEGER.
too many of my HS buddies were abused by this tragic Vietnam War. They deserve more than being forgotten and labeled as 'freaks'.
The real freaks were the pukes that never served a day yet criticized them!

I love Huey but he didn't write this song and the writers didn't "call" anything. It's a reaction to Vietnam. Great song, though!
Chris hayes what a guitarist...he da man!

Great concert and this was our favorite live song.

Great band,great song...good memories
Always a favorite of mine. Back then they didn't call it PTSD but that's what this song describes, with great insight and emotion. Awesome.

roguenation “Shell shocked” prior to PTSD.
roguenation it did not make it into mainstream vernacular until after the Gulf War
Huey on this video reminds me of Lou Ferigno on the starting of the series Hulk😂😂 cool song and Thanks to all Vets for the big sacrifice....
My anthem, after Nam... Huey put into music...
40 years of chit...
But good with everything..
Walking on a thin line... been there done that...

Chris Hayes playing the guitar. From my hometown in Visalia. Well done

Just one hell of a song.
Yeah, Chris Hayes is GREAT ! One of the best around.
When you listen to a song you used to listen to 35+ years ago and realize it's about PTSD.

Mario and also Kenny Aaronson are the two coolest bass players in history.
When I listened to this song in the '80s, I thought that Mr. Lewis sang, "Fucking on a thin line." I thought that that was a great song.
that is very respectful of you to call him "Mr. Lewis"

The look on Chris’ face when he messes up the end of his solo. He’s one of my favourite guitarists, but he has a hard time playing live.
