I've been keeping track on Atom's work since AVA, I love how he approaches a different rock genre with Against Me, and it's awesome to see him now collaborating with Matt Skiba in Alkaline Trio. #TeamWillard all the way
Thanks for watching! I hope this conversation inspires & motivates you. If you're struggling and/or just want to improve the quality of your life, I highly reccomend therapy 🤘🏼 Check out this video's sponsor BetterHelp and get 10% off your first month of therapy with this link: BetterHelp.com/Cobus
No way.. In-depth videos, serious and rich in experience, have no viewers..., they are not visual..., human brains are shrinking, They wither at the pace of technological advance!...
Atom is and always will be one of my favorite drummers because of his work with AvA. Best band ever... and Atom's style is just such an integral part of that awesomeness. He has inspired my own drumming a lot.
i reserve my opinon on AvA. okei fine ill give it to you. the rocket ship didnt quite make it to space x level 😋 im glad toms refformed really. we all get a bit lost sometimes hehuehuehuheeeee
You should interview Andy Hurley from Fall Out Boy. Personally, I’m not a FOB fan, but it would be a good interview. You could ask him “Andy,, why do I play your songs better than you do?
My dad is a drummer so I knew I was going to drum... but what taught me in the end was micro- analyzing Atoms playing on "We Don't Need To Whisper" at age 10 . And I swear at some point in my life I could play that album front to end without missing a beat. He's one of the BEST drummers today, and I'll die on that hill defending it.
im annoyed this needs mentioning. he is even more chilled than ron welty, notorious for being more chilled than absolutely anything you threw at any of the noble gases. i wonder what happened to hiim actually
I've been watching your videos for over 10 years. This is awesome man. So interesting, funny, down to earth. You've always been great at talking Cobus, ever since you started adding it to your videos. So humble. It's refreshing. I'd love to see more of these podcasts, as well as be able to listen to them via other platforms.
Love this Cobus, your Heaven cover with Atom is probably my favorite piece of drumming on UA-cam. Makes me nostalgic about past times. Thanks for the memories!
The discussion of performing for visuals, as well as tracking drums honestly and "human-ly", really resonated with me and my values as a drummer. Great convo! Looking forward to more of these!
Man, so great to hear you guys talk about this stuff. I recently covered Atom's drum cover of Santigold's "Creator" and was super stoked that he saw it on Instagram. I wish I had started making videos years ago, but nevertheless I'm glad to be doing it now. I'm grateful to have this platform to share my love of drumming and possibly connect with the drummers who inspire me. You guys are both top tier, thanks for sharing this!
This is amazing! You’re an extremely natural host, this all felt like an easy conversation between friends (which I guess it kind of was). That hour absolutely flew by. Dream guests for me would be my main drumming influences: Dom Howard Travis Barker Chad Smith Good luck, Cobus, this pod slaps
I'm a guitarist, and not a drummer, but I love watching drum videos online. Totally appreciate this conversation. Reminds me of Jim Adkins' Pass Through Frequencies podcast
Yup, love this. Love your covers. Love you. Just keep doing whatever and being awesome (which is just being you). Been a longtime fan, and wish you the best.
Loved this Cobus, *excellent* first pick! We Don’t Need To Whisper will forever be one of my favorite albums, and I completely agree that nothing sounds the same since the songs he did with AVA. You can’t put anyone else in a song like The War and have it sound the same.
Duuuude! Seeing a South African sit down with a legend like Atom Willard made my day. And then the introduction and seeing Atom squirm in response ... brilliant. Thank you for the video.
I love listening to podcasts, but more specifically, podcasts with hosts and guests who are passionate, knowledgeable, and at the same time humble and personable. You have all the right ingredients to make this a very successful podcast. Keep it up, Cobus! I loved this first episode.
The Purdie Shuffle (well, the Rosanna Shuffle variant) being talked about @18:29 would love to see Cobus do a Steely Dan drum cover or even doing some covers of well known Purdie tracks!
Not even finished with the episode and I feel compelled to comment. This is freaking awesome! Super well done! I don't drum, but I've always had a creative hobby and consumed creative content. This is just a joy to listen to!
I remember the very FIRST video I saw of yours was you doing a cover for "Valkyrie Missile" by Angels & Airwaves back in 2007.I remember how skilled and happy you were playing such an incredible song. To finally meet the guy behind it- THE Atom Willard, must have been amazing!
Bro I clearly remember you playing with him what was probably a decade ago now, and how nervous you were (but still killed it obviously). Remember it well and it was so sick!!
That is really amazing, thank you for coming with that new podcast. And especially for Atom Willard as a first guest. Hope you will continue with the podcast as long as it makes you inspired (and not to others expectations:)
Lekker Cobus! Looking forward to future interviews. Petar Janjic and Calvin Rogers are my requests for future quests. Both match your energy and creativity.
I love Adam's playing so much. I was just listening to Scream, Dracula, Scream a few hours ago and wondered if there were any UA-cam drum cam videos of his and came across this. Great conversation, thank you for doing this Cobus. I especially loved, at around the 57 minute mark, Adam talking about leaving in the mistakes. Listen to Brendan Canty from Fugazi, and you'll hear tempo changes all over the place. But it is just perfect and that band is so ridiculously good. As was RFTC.
Duuuudeee! I just had such a great hour listening to everything and I had a blast! Thank you so much for creating a potcast I feel connected to and I hope for many many more episodes to come!
Two of my highest influences that filled me with inspiration in my formative years as a drummer and as a human having a conversation. I wish there was another hour to this. ♥️
Such a great interview. Gentlemen, you RULE!!!! Atom, you are an absolutely brilliant drummer. Your playing at Angels & Airwaves was phenomenal. Whisper, Empire, Love are my favorite AVA albums. I listened to them when my children were born and grew up, and I still listen to them to this day. Thank You for all. Cheers from Poland, Guys! 🙌🤘
About 36:35 "Your Taste",have a diff exp.... I got a guy to record for church, volunteer work. He didn't like the snare and all and it's just my best sound. Later, asked me for another song to record. Didn't record it. It's backed up with attitude context about the guy even though he is now abroad.
Loved the interview! Only thing was I was curious for him to talk about joining Alkaline Trio. Would have been nice to hear him talk about how the experience has been so far. But it was a great watch! Love the idea of interviewing drummers in this podcast-like style. I'd really like to hear Riley Breckenridge from Thrice as a guest some time!
I love his honesty about the blink albums. I love all of them but I can see how the untitled album transcends blink and can appeal to different tastes.
This was amazing ❤ Nothing but respect for all the hard work you put in dude. Would love to see if you could get any member of Blink 182 on for an interview, they are my favorite band, so that would truly awsome 😊
Untitled is arguably their best record, I personally love all the Tom era records because I grew up on them but Untitled has THE best guitar tones, lyrics and drumming while also being wildly varied song to song. Great stuff.
Ohmygawsh an hour of Cobus talking yaaassss. I’ll listen to your beautiful accent and rambling all day long. Pls pls pls interview Adam Gilbert next. He’s a drummer and runs a channel called drum abuse also plays live for STARSET. Keep making video bro!
Wow, nobody paid attention to what he said about Eloy Casagrande at 25:39 . Well observed Atom. Now he's part of one of the biggest bands in the world.
I would have ended the interview on 18:56 lol, how dare he! Jokes aside the way he explained it makes sense why he was never into it. Great video Cobus.
Awesome concept! And hard to find a more rad guest for the first episode! Atom is not only an amazing drummer but also seem like a really cool and nice guy! Other cool guests would be Brooks Wackerman, Chad Szeliga(Ex Breaking Benjamin) and Josh Freese.
That's funny because less than an hour ago i started listening to social distortion for the ''first time'' and i went to wikipedia to know more about them. Then i saw that Atom played drums for them, so i went to Atom wiki and read what Tom said about him, And now this intervew just showed up on a facebook story with cobus saying exactly what i read not even 20 minutes ago
Just thought regarding the end part of the chat. Keep the professional ultimate edited polished videos coming, BUT how about a live one take version of the same song too? Double the content for the same piece! Awesome first episode, I’ll be back 🤙
You kidding me?! THE Atom Willard? His work in Angels and Airwaves is some of my favorite ever.
SAME. We talk about that a lot in this episode, I had a blast. Hope you enjoy it!
I'm on a whispers and I empire binge at the moment and am absolutely enthralled.
His I-empire drums are fucking out of this world
What rock have you been under?
Shut up Tom Bot
I've been keeping track on Atom's work since AVA, I love how he approaches a different rock genre with Against Me, and it's awesome to see him now collaborating with Matt Skiba in Alkaline Trio. #TeamWillard all the way

Glad you dig AvA but he’s ridiculous with Rocket From the Crypt. Check out Scream Dracula Scream.
Bro, ATOM FREAKING WILLARD. Glad he's in the Alkaline Trio now!
Cobus, I'll always be thankful that you introduced me to Angels and Airwaves back in 2010.
As an RFTC fan since the 90’s, I absolutely love Atom’s drumming!
You should interview Andy Hurley from Fall Out Boy. Personally, I’m not a FOB fan, but it would be a good interview. You could ask him “Andy,, why do I play your songs better than you do?
blink 182 QUESTION 18:45

Loved this conversation! Two incredible humans with a lot of wisdom to give! 🤘🏻🙂
Atom seems like a really lovely genuine guy and he will be such an amazing drummer for alkaline trio
He’s truly an epic drummer!!!💯

Also, 'til that day? Your collab with Atom Willard is still one of my favorite videos to watch. The song, the dynamic in the duet? Just amazing!
Yup, love this. Love your covers. Love you. Just keep doing whatever and being awesome (which is just being you).

Was not expecting this but greatly appreciated. Would love to see more interviews like this
You do interviews as well as you play drums, phenomenally! So fluid and personal, it made me feel like I was in a bar with friends. Congrats!
Oh man what an awesome
New direction for your
Channel and life!
Just watched this interview. Atom seems to be a very genuine, cool and nice guy. Great job Cobus! More of this please!
This was an AWESOME first episode. Please make more. You're on to something with this series.
Duuuude! Seeing a South African sit down with a legend like Atom Willard made my day. And then the introduction and seeing Atom squirm in response ... brilliant. Thank you for the video.
This conversation is fantastic!! Certainly Atom is amazing, but you did a really good job facilitating, Cobus!

I still watch the heaven drum duo regularly. Amazing drummer!

As you can tell I'm an OG follower ;D
That is really amazing, thank you for coming with that new podcast. And especially for Atom Willard as a first guest. Hope you will continue with the podcast as long as it makes you inspired (and not to others expectations:)
This is like food for me. I appreciate the introspective approach. My ears thank you.

As someone who is following you since 2009, this is amazing content! :D And the studio looks amazing.
Hearing Atom talk about Pat Wilson was spot on. And Pinkerton is the one album I'd have to have if only given one.
THIS WAS GREAT! MORE PLEASE would be great to see you talk to some UA-cam drummers
Duuuudeee! I just had such a great hour listening to everything and I had a blast! Thank you so much for creating a potcast I feel connected to and I hope for many many more episodes to come!

Atom seems like a very simple and friendly guy to talk to. I'm a big fan!
Awesome Cobus, along with doing your regular drum covers this will be a great addition to your channel!
I was so pumped to see him in Alkaline trio and angels and airwaves WDNTW and Love albums definitely influenced my drumming through the years
Yeah man!!! Love this!
Thnx Cobus, Atom is a legend.
I love his honesty about the blink albums. I love all of them but I can see how the untitled album transcends blink and can appeal to different tastes.
That is a huge throwback to your duo video "Heaven" a long time ago. I've watched it so many times 😍
This was amazing ❤
Nothing but respect for all the hard work you put in dude.
Would love to see if you could get any member of Blink 182 on for an interview, they are my favorite band, so that would truly awsome 😊
Yesss , i remember when you covered ava songs a long time ago (following you since 2007 and your cover videos in the church)
I am really enjoying this interview, Cobus. You definitely have a knack for this. Keep it up!!
I really enjoyed this thank you 👊 im all for more content like this much love from the UK
Untitled is arguably their best record, I personally love all the Tom era records because I grew up on them but Untitled has THE best guitar tones, lyrics and drumming while also being wildly varied song to song. Great stuff.
I unironically think that Untitled is an alt-rock/pop masterpiece
The part you guys together from AVA, I loved it, Also one of the most sweet drum track Atom you got there..
This was fantastic. Thank you for the video. 🙏

Do more of these please‼️
Wow, nobody paid attention to what he said about Eloy Casagrande at 25:39 . Well observed Atom. Now he's part of one of the biggest bands in the world.
Salah satu drummer terbaik yg saya idolakan 🥁 🔥. Greetings from us Indonesia 🇮🇩
Nice episode. Atom seems to be such an amazing guy!
2 of my favourite drummers talking, I love it!! Paiste or Sabian question was the best!!!
This is great man. Atom is one of my favorites. You know what would be a cool episode, Lindsey Raye Ward.
New alkaline drummer! I love derek and it makes my sad, but happy at the same time. Alkaline trio is my favorite band.
Travis Barker gotta be a great guest to this after Atom.
He recently got a shoutout from a Blink-182 concert! 😮
I would have ended the interview on 18:56 lol, how dare he! Jokes aside the way he explained it makes sense why he was never into it. Great video Cobus.
Love this bro! Great convo✌🏼
Atom is not only a great drummer but seems like a hell of a nice guy as well!
Seeing you both together after that duet drum cover of Heaven by A&A. Great humans you both are.

Love what Atom says about humans and ignorance when it comes to others (about 24min in)
Awesome concept! And hard to find a more rad guest for the first episode! Atom is not only an amazing drummer but also seem like a really cool and nice guy! Other cool guests would be Brooks Wackerman, Chad Szeliga(Ex Breaking Benjamin) and Josh Freese.
