@MVG good looks, and thanks for another fantastic video! Just bought a new 2DSXL on your tip. I look forward to modding the heck out of it. I started messing around with homebrew with the original DS, back when you would bridge a contact with a pencil to flash a custom firmware.
As someone who modded their PSP long time ago, this absolutely blows my mind. I may have to pick one of these up and mod it.
The PSP is even easier tho, damn the thing just takes the files on the card, press to run, done. Add ISOs to the card and be happy, all through it's own mass storage mode with Mini-B USB.
I have the chunky 1000 model, for some reason I like it way more than the slim ones (have owned a 2000 and sold away a 3000 too).
Have both and its psp hands down everytime. 3ds/2ds is amazing for backups and still not as easy the drag and drop psp
I just picked up a perfect condition New 3ds Xl with a ton of homebrew additions, and its fucking amazing.
I carry a psp and a old slab 2ds in my bag, and between the two I'm never bored. I'm planing to get a ps Vita and new 3ds xl to have alongside my switch

“Brand new Nintendo new 2DS XL”
Nintendo’s naming never ceases to amuse me
Friend: Yo is that a 2ds xl?
Me: No I got the New 2ds xl
Friend: ...So you have to pay more if it isn’t used?
Me: No it’s a New 2ds xl
Friend: I know so you didn’t buy one that was used
Me: No it’s the name of the console
Friend: Yeah 2ds xl
Me: NO IT’S NAME IS NEW 2DS XL GODDAMIT-
They seem to have regained their senses with the Switch, at least for now...
At the end, When you said "I have good news" I though you were going to say "I'm Porting Diablo to new Nintendo 2DS XL"
Watching this video in 2023 makes me wish I'd picked one up back in 2020. I bought mine early last year and paid $225 for it! Even at that price, I am beyond pleased with the device. It is hands down my favorite handheld ever.
This video couldn’t be more timely, I literally bought a N2DSXL yesterday
I recently purchased one as well. The 50 dollar price cut is what convinced me to purchase.
This video could have been more timely if it was released yesterday when you purchased your Nintendo device.
seeing these sell for just $99 makes me so jealous. I got mine preowned for 120 plus tax 6 months ago and i still felt lucky.
just bought one + pokemon moon for $140, luckily i still have pokemon y and ssb4, havent had a 2ds in over 6 years
@@maudsuicgusiagdsa where did you get yours from? just used or some refurbishing website
You definitely want to get a "New" model of 2DS/3DS for homebrew and emulators. I've always had a bad time trying to get Retroarch to work on a stock 3DS model.
Say I didn't have many issues as I knew to stay the hell away from the Retroarch cores as much I could. Granted for straight homebrew I prefer my Vita I picked up in February as it has more stuff and I find works a bit better for what I want in a homebrew device.
just go with standalone emulators for devices with limited performance, gets rid of all the possible overhead. snes9x runs near perfectly with only occasional skipped frames on my old 3ds.
@@waverazor Yeah but a lot of people don't consider how at-least 75% of all 3DS homebrew is optimized-exclusively for the New models, while they shit the bed and crash on the old models, so only a modest selection of homebrew apps are viable on the old models.
I remember everyone arguing about if n64 emulation would be possible even on the n3ds
I don't see why not. I had full speed N64 emulation in late 2013-2014ish on my Sony Xperia SP and ZTE Avid 4G...
@@duke45jp becoz power doesnt necessary mean good compability. Psvita still doesnt run psp at native resolution, yet phones do.
@@cursedshadow The Vita has an ARM processor. Just not as up to date as today's processors. A higher clock would probably help.
But in all honesty. My Galaxy S8+ shouldn't be running GameCube games as well as it should. It's up to the software at this point.
I'd like to add that replacing the c-nub with a psp nub is a great improvement to the system and super cheap and easy to do!
This vid made me buy one! 😃 I've been wanting a 3DS system since 2013 but totally forgot about it. The time has come
I actually followed your tutorial of the 3DS and modded my own 2DSXL back in December. It’s honestly thanks to you that I got in the modding and home-brew scene in the first place.
Dumb question probably but... After the 2dsxl is hacked it can play 3ds games, right?
dumb question indeed, but yes, the n2dsxl can play 3ds games when its modded@@infinitegodman
Another good "emulation" feature that the new 2ds and 3ds can do are the injections, this runs gba games perfectly
I think it runs them natively
I think there are a few issues with certain gba games, but I wouldn’t know them off the top of my head

Ironically I actually decided to mod my N3DSXL a day before this was uploaded and struggled a bit with actually finding and downloading stuff so this video directing me to guides that are extremely easy to follow is a huge help, thanks MVG!

I just realized that i've bought the systems you've given away after seeing your videos about them.
I guess i'm buying a 2DS XL next...
Thank you so much for all the hard work! We all appreciate you more then we can ever show! I just ordered one from Wal-Mart. Can't wait to test it out
Thank you MVG. Love your videos and your participation on the spawncast. Great work.
I recently bought the 208 in 1 for ds to use on my 7 (8 in 1 month) year old 3ds xl and it is so amazing!
Love the video, MVG - I just picked up this console at Wal-Mart as well. Since Nintendo doesn't want me to have access to my $500 of 3DS purchases on two systems at once, there's nothing to do with the system I just bought, so I'm planning to mod it and play through some older homebrew I've missed. Great video and timing as always!
How you were able to do fireball forward motions on that little d-pad is what impressed me the most.
I bought one of these about a year ago, and really haven't used it much. Definitely going to mod it after seeing what this thing is capable of. Pretty impressive.
I find it funny that to mod my new3DS I used a magnet to make it go into sleep mode hah. fun modding things
@@iamnotyourbuddyGUY the installation guide (using ntrboot) explains it in better detail, but basically there's a sort of recovery mode that you can access by pressing some of the buttons whilst the lid is detected as "closed" by a magnetic switch in the system.
Well I wanted to pause the game without closing and opening up the lid every 5-10 minutes (thus waring it down).
Asked for a mod for button combo sleep, and was told that sleep function only activated when it detects the magnet of the speaker when the lid is closed.
So, I ripped a magnet from a freezer decoration and now I can pause whenever by placing that little manget
I did this a few days ago and it was pretty easy considering I've never did anything like this and it's amazing. I already had knowledge of roms so getting games wasn't a problem. Love my my new NEW 2ds xl
Just picked this exact handheld up a couple weeks ago and followed the same website guide. Kudos to the creators of those sites, I used the same one for my WiiU.
PCSX ReArmed is heavily optimized for CHD and PBP format only.
ISO and Bin files can run significantly worse and can overall be less compatible, unless it's 2D games. There is an outdated PCSX ReArmed compability list (we need to catch up) on GBAtemp, which functions as a guide with recommended settings as well.
The emulator already performs amazingly by now. I'd say more than 85% of games are very compatible. You can almost throw any game at it with good success of having an enjoyable experience. Most of them can run near full speed and more important hold it's frame rate with some occasionally frame dips pretty well. However, small an medium frame dips are still pretty common with most of the demanding 3D games.
That's why I can't recommend any games other than the games you like. However you need to convert them right and have good settings. CHDMAN and PSX to PSP is a good choice to start.
Having to convert each single one of them is fucking stressful and not worth it.
@@UltraAhmetDoray CHDMAN batch converts all BIN + CUE files to CHD within a folder automatically.

Bought one of these a few weeks back. Nice to see a video on it!
This is a fantastic video, thank you! I have been playing with a beat up version of New 3DS I bought in Africa which had downloaded version of a twilightmenu++ on it, but I don't know what I am doing, so hoping to learn more and doing it on a brand new New 2DS sounds like a lot of fun.
I had been putting off buying one of these for the last few years. Hearing the price drop to 99.99 woke me up. They are definitely on the way out soon so I just ordered one. Thanks for the low down on the homebrew! I can't wait to get mine set up.
I've just installed retroarch on a new 2dsxl using the flashcard exploit, it took me several hours, not easy with latest firmware. Thank you for this video, now I can play Sonic 3 Complete in portable mode.
the way he says "nintendo new 2ds" instead of "new nintendo 2ds"
Seeing half life and quake running on a 3ds left me speechless, you convinced me to buy a new3ds
Thank you so much for this video! I have a New Nintendo 3DS that I wasn’t using much anymore. I had already wanted to mod it and was planning to get an R4 chip. But your video illuminated so much for me. I followed the guide and afterwards installed a GBA emulator, was super straight forward. Thank you!

@MVG I missed the first time these went on sale but after your recommendation I made sure to get next time Walmart started selling more. Thanks!
What an aptly timed video. I recently used some of my stimulus check ti buy this exact model new. Took me a while to get around to putting a CFW on it but now its choc full of games and even some of my favorite shows thanks to an r4i gold card and moonshell.

Here's a tip to speed up retroarch: delete the core .cia files and info files you don't use and it'll load much much faster.
Also why not mention gba?
Thanks for the tip! Do you happen to know as well how to remove a core icon from the 3DS home menu? I tried removing them through data management but they always automatically gets restored for some reason.
@@WiZzArDStudios Do you have FBI? If you do, go under Titles, then find the core you want to delete, press A, then Delete Title and Ticket.
@@Immadeus I don't think that works because the cores used are installed as cias at launch if they aren't already. I don't know the reasoning, but since it takes 20 seconds to load a core, it's more effective to have the shortcuts.

Love this video, I got mine 3 weeks ago when they got marked down at Walmart. Modded it right away.
I always on the look for that one in my area. I saw a regular 2ds for about 80usd and ordered it right away, while I was waiting for the seller to ship the 2ds I came upon a New 3ds xl for 100usd in very good condition(almost brand new) with 4 3ds and 11 ds cartridge. I had to cancel the 2ds order and fortunately the seller was nice to understand the situation and she also has problems shipping the 2ds because of the pandemic. It was my best purchase ever.
Meanwhile they are 300+ dollars a year later
Not sure if you still care about this, but the Japanese New 2DS LL are significantly cheaper. I just picked one up for ~160 dollars; which isn't amazing, but it's way better than the ~700 you'd normally spend.
I just subscribed and you have the most informative videos I have ever watched. I can't stop watching!
I just ordered one thank u for the recommendation 😊
I was doing a quick read up on the retroarch faq and it said that on boot the loading times are long because every core installed is initialized on boot. If you get rid of cores you don't use in your /cores folder it will reduce the load times significantly.
I come from the future and new 2ds xl's are costing $200+ now
Great video as always. You may have given me a marvellous idea for a present

I wish i got one before it was discontinued. I planned to but I put it off until i saw in the news that it was discontinued months ago and now it's scalped af..
it's not scalped and the people selling it for a higher cost aren't scummy, it's value in general raised from the fact that they are never going to be produced ever again. it's shitty, but it's not immoral like actual scalping is. i still recommend getting one, i bought a 2ds xl pretty recently and even with the high price you get every single game on it + all the other nintendo handhelds prior to it for free. i recommend checking facebook marketplace before anywhere else because you could find it being sold by people that have no idea the price has gone up.
I watched this today and was immediately sold, I love hacking my consoles and handhelds but needed something with more power, the Vita while awesome just didn't have enough oomph. I went to my local Walmart and bought one of the 3 remaining for $99. Let the games begin!! Thanks a bunch for this video. Cheers!

I've always thought the top of the 2DS XL looked like an iPhone. I suspect Nintendo did this on purpose as smartphones are their main competitor for portable gaming.

Boy, I wish I'd watched this 9 months ago when it came out... it's nuts what they're selling for now.
Well now I feel like a dingus for getting one of those R4 carts I got on a whim but haven't even gotten around using yet. For a year.
It still has better game compatibility, and also makes the modding process for a 3ds even quicker/simpler, so it's not really a waste either.
@D. Mood, the first time I was setting up TWiLight, it felt like a hassle even setting it up (fairly sure I did something wrong, just wasn't sure what, since I did get it working eventually). Got an R4i Gold 3DS Plus a few months ago, and I really like it a lot.
I mean, if your 3DS gets bricked, if you have a flashcart that can use NTRboot, you can use that to unbrick, IIRC. Plus, if you have multiple systems to mod, you can use just the one card, too. I personally like having something to occupy the card slot, so I have my flashcart there.
@@helentran204 What kind of unbricking you mean? Don't remember now (not as doubting, just really forgot), was it that you boot it straight from the NTRboot and perform recovery straight from that? One tip I would always give too is having a NAND backup, can save you from pretty much any issue from what I've seen. With that you're quite safe whatever happens to it, unless the hardware itself dies of course. It has saved my ass once.
You can even hardmod the console and inject the backed up NAND straight into the console's memory chip in case everything else fails. It's one of those things you really cannot skip when modding, when I did it to friends or so I always store the backup on a cloud folder as well so they (hopefully) download it too and keep it safe.
I managed to get one and was super exited when I did
Totally got a 2ds XL because of this video, now looking for games
I bought Animal Crossing New Leaf on this system last month. Big mistake as I can never finish anyt... Now to play the game.
Currently enjoying my original 3ds, nice and small so it makes it easy to use while I’m waiting for classes at college
Still have my original 3DS from my childhood. Now it's awesome with homebrew!!
Shame they didnt make the “new” line of 3ds’ at least 480p
They didn't want to break compatibility with old games. Also, I don't know if the gpu could stand the up on resolution. Also maybe it would have made the handheld more expensive.
You don't notice the resolution if you actually have the console in your hands so making it 480p would be useless
Funny thing actually happened while I was modding my New 2DS XL. Basically, while I was installing the Homebrew software, I was noticing some weird crap on the SD card, but I ignored it and just followed the tutorial I was using. Once I opened up my Homebrew for the first time, I discovered that my New 2DS XL, which had been refurbished by Nintendo themselves, had someone else's Homebrew on the SD card! I got rid of some of it, and updated the version of mGBA they had on there, but that was kind of funny.
Also, does Daedalus require a specific crack to work? I tried to use it with my Steelhax, and the thing would just freeze whenever I tried to load it.
@@YourUncleBenis hmm ok. I just didnt know bc i feel weird when using old things
Modding mine currently to get ROMs and re-experience all the DS and 3DS games from my childhood! So far so good.

Another crazy thing is that some insane people are looking into bringing a Dreamcast emulator over to the 3ds as well
Quick Question, where to buy a brand new $99 New 2DS XL with box?
At any store before 2020. Unless you have a time machine, you’re better off buying a used one with some games for $180-250. Some Japanese ones are a bit cheaper though, but then you’ll have to deal with international shipping charges
This was specifically around May/June 2020. Nintendo bundled remaining New 2DS XL stock with Mario Kart 7 pre-installed and reduced the price to $99. These sold very quickly, and you are out of luck getting it anywhere near this price now.
