This is fantastic, there’s shockingly little coverage of the Herodian dynasty, which is bonkers considering how dramatic it is and intercuts with all the Roman allstars stories as well. Also great to see Dr. Mason

Impressive documentary. Well done! So much history is tied to this one individual. His doings whether good or bad still reverberates to this day. Herod was a mighty bridge between two nations, but no one wanted to cross it.
39:05 This was the third (3rd) Temple in Jerusalem, which was destroyed in 70 AD. Certain groups are quite adamant about destroying the Al-Aqsa mosque compound (Dome of the Rock) on the Temple Mount, in order to build a third (3rd) Temple.
wasn't it the 2nd Temple the romans destroyed in AD 70 by Titus? There are serious questions whether or not the Temple Mount was where the second temple was - a solid case can be made that the Wailing Wall is not a surviving wall of the 2nd Temple but rather (ironically) a surviving retainer wall of the roman fort Antonius.
@@julianciahaconsulting8663 Herod had the second (2nd) Temple demolished and the third (3rd) Temple built in its place, which was destroyed in 70 AD. The theories about the Antonia Fortress (Martin/Sams/Et cetera) are usually based on later textual citations; rather than the most ancient sources and/or more importantly, what the archaeological remains seem to suggest. Any archaeology in the Levant, especially Jerusalem, has to be carefully considered because the findings/conclusions are always predetermined. As I alluded to in my original comment, archaeology is a powerful weapon being used to rewrite history and justify the present/future.

So many denominations with shows like this give many non- believers ways to become sceptic. I believe scripture is for the soul only for you & only you. It’s private & no one can tell you how to interpret any of it. Read & read it again it’s not for children, yeah some but I believe it should not be read until adulthood. Remember it’s your soul & the word is for you as you see fit it’s a journey of love, drama but most importantly necessary! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Well done. Thank you. Is Josephus' silence about King Herod's massacre of the Bethlehem children necessarily conclusive that Herod did not actually kill them? It is certainly conceivable, and consistent with his known character.
All i know is Herod was a clever survivor. Backing Mark Antony and still keeping his throne and place when Octavian won. How he did it,ie kept his life and kingdom at this time, explains why in later life he did become probably paranoid and a little bit deranged for the time period he was in.
@@malcolmdavid722 The Hasmoneans were Jews by birth, from the family of Aaron, Moses' brother (Cohanim). Where did you get the idea that they were Greeks?
@ Correct, but Josephus records they were only allowed to keep their religion as long as they accepted Greek Kings and Priests, so there was no true Jewish independence.. This enslaving oversight also continued with Rome who used the Herodian Edomite rulers who were converted Jews.
These would be much more palatable if you took the fake religiosity out of them and explained them in a secular fashion. You know, just the facts, please?
Religion is so much part of the political science of the time. You can't keep the subject of religion out of it. It's like saying talk about the establishment of the Roman empire but don't mention Augustus and Mark Anthony. The subject of religion is treated neutrality and objectivity .
That is just not possible, even the historians of that time have to talk about their history and religion as one since every one at that time believed in one or multiple deities at the same time. It is just like now in the Middle East, every thing revolves around religion.

Despotism leads to stability, as does fear of being excecuted.
